RIGHT FRONT: Work as the left front up to the underarm. Do the bind offs at the opposite sides, start the armhole with the wrong side of the work facing you. LONG SLEEVES: With the #3 needles cast on 36 (40) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches. Now change to the #5 needles and work in stockinette stitch, increase 1 stitch at each side of the work every inch, until you have 50 (54) sts on the needle. CROCHETING BORDER: With the right side of the work facing you, tie yarn at the bottom of the right front and work in s c along the front edge, (keeping the work flat) to neck edge; 3 s c in corner st, s c around neck, shaping to fit, 3 s c in corner st, s c down the left front. Chain 1 turn. 2nd row: 1 s c in each stitch, placing 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c around neck in each st, 3 s c in corner st. BUTTONHOLE ROW: * Chain 3 sts, skip 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * down the right front. Chain 1, turn. 3rd row: 1 s c in each stitch, placing 2 s c over the chain 3 space. NEXT ROW: Work across 21 (25) sts, bind off loosely the next 34 sts, for the back of neck. Work across the remaining 21 (25) sts. Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for ¾ inches. NECK BAND: With the #3 needles, working from the right side of the work, pick up and knit 43 sts from the left shoulder down to the center of the neck; mark the center with a colored thread; pick up and knit 43 sts from center to right shoulder. GAUGE: 4 sts to an inch. 6 rows to an inch. BACK: Using the #5 needles cast on 58 (62) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches. Now change to the #9 needles and work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 10 ½ (11) inches in all, or as long as you wish up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 3 (3) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, once at each side. Now decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 2 (3) times. Work even until the armhole measures 6 (6 ½) inches above the underarm. SHOULDERS: Bind off 5 (5) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 (4) sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows. Change to the smaller needles and work across row, increasing 4 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 rows. Bind off very loosely. Make the 2nd sleeve the same way. FINISHING: With the finer needle pick up and knit 46 sts around the front of the neck. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 rows. Bind off loosely. Sew shoulder, side seams, sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armhole matching the underarm seams.
