Dear Readers, “Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive.”
 - Elbert Hubbard. 2011 is on its way out and we prepare to welcome in 2012 with a papier mâché trumpet fair, fireworks and a New Year’s Eve kiss. The apocalypse? Possibly. But don’t let that stop you from celebrating everything that is great about life and living in Indonesia. We may have the macet, but we also have warm tropical showers. We may not have a passable public transport system, but we do have ojeks and cheap taxis. We unfortunately do have corruption, but this also means we can pretty much get away with anything… In this issue we are celebrating the culinary delights that is street food in Jakarta. Petersen, who has a steel palate, tells us how we should all brave the back alleys at night to sample real food at least once during our stays here. If you don’t, you haven’t lived! Let us also celebrate peace and life and sometimes there is no better way to

remind us how lucky we are to be alive than by visiting a cemetery. Jenkins reveals such a place in Jakarta, which is beautifully looked after and deserves acknowledgement. Turn to page 5 to find out more. The holiday season may be a time for family, but for those singletons out there, Maureen S. celebrates YOU with a fun read about all the things you get to do during the holidays! And if you don’t agree, she’s more than willing to hear a piece of your mind. We also celebrate the mobile phone’s 25th birthday with Leysner on page 8 where we invite you to send us a photo holding your old bricks for the chance to win the stunning ‘Kretek’ book by Mark Hanusz. From everyone at Jakarta Expat, we’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Travel safe and pack light, folks.

Celebrate Singledom

Celebrate The Holidays, Even When You're Single by Maureen S.

D

ecember. We have all started to be bombarded by the sights, sounds, and smells of the holidays, the Christmas vacations, and the end-of-year gatherings. Shoppers, regardless of their religious beliefs, are on high gear. Here comes the spending overdrive on those Credit Cards. Practically no one thinks about the bills that will come in January. Or February. And March.

Maureen S

In her previous life Maureen studied Economics and International Business. Then she grew out of business meetings. Ever since she has done countless things in life, about to give up some useless activities and diva-like acquaintances, but so far she finds her weird sense of humour a hard habit to break. She’s a mother of two kids, and if you think she shouldn’t have written an article about singlehood, say so at mnsima@hotmail.com

Traffic jams to the max, car parks are full and filled, and valet service at the malls become standing ovations, each time someone finally picks up their car. And then there’s also the time, the ‘pressure’ to reconnect with family. “Don’t be selfish, it’s only once a year that they get to see you!” rang loudly in the ears as our mothers ‘hang’ right above our heads. Metaphorically speaking, sometimes literally. Family gatherings, office parties… attend them when you must, and chances are there’ll be people (grandmas, aunties, uncles, neighbours, nosy colleagues, and so on) who will ask when you are finally going to settle down and have children. Don’t despair! Instead of feeling so down and depressed, why not think about how great and lucky you are to be single over the holidays! 

If you’re a man: The holidays are yours and yours only. 1. You can spend it how you want, even it if it means going to Africa by yourself. Or sleep

on the couch, watch movies for one whole week, and travel to the bathroom only as needed. Throw your own party, play the music you want, 2. and invite whoever you wish. Or go to ANY party and not have to worry about if ‘she’ would get along

with your friends. Even better, crash a party and make new friends.

No pressure to say, “Ooh…thank you… it’s so nice. 3. How did you read my mind?” upon receiving a gift from a supposedly special someone. When you

actually just can’t imagine getting caught wearing a purple plaid tie with yellow stripes on it. However sexy it could be.

No parents-in-law-to-be to impress, or no more 4. parents-in-law’s sarcastic comments to manage. You get to spend time with people that you want, not of whom you must.

Be as useful or as useless as you think you can 5. tolerate. No one judges you that drinking every night at the bar during the holidays is NOT classified as volunteerism towards keeping the National GDP stable.

If you’re a woman: Basically the same as if you’re a man, except maybe replace “Africa” with Europe or Brazil. Substitute the purple plaid tie with orange lacy underwear with jingle bells on the back that would eventually hurt your tail bone, and #5 – change “drinking every night” with “drinking every night PLUS shopping every day”. And with these thoughts, I wish you all - single or not – an actually joyful time of the year! 

Kasada, a Celebration

Involving a Volcano & lots of People Throwing Stuff in it! By Jack E. Lato

P

eople are divided into two categories in regards to their position in time. People that hang on to the past and those that live for the future; the first tend to live as men did decades or possibly centuries ago. The latter focus more on the present and the future. The Tenggerese at the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, Indonesia possibly belong to the first category. They live the same way as their ancestors; observing cultural traditions, according to the rules set by those before them. One of the rituals they still observe is Yadnya Kasada, an annual sacrificial festival taking place at the crater rim of Mount Bromo.

giving the couple 24 children after trying painstakingly for years. While falling into the burning magma, Kesuma cried out loud and advised her parents not to lament over her death. She even asked her parents to sacrifice to the gods and deities annually, appeasing them to allow the blessing. This sacrificing to appease ancient deities continues today with this annual ceremony. Roro Anteng and her husband were the rulers of the region; she was the descendant of the Brawijaya dynasty of Majapahit Kingdom. Joko Seger was the son of a priest, of a high ranking Hinduist cast, Brahma, possibly named after Mount Bromo. The Tenggerese and their Bromo

Kasada: More than Chickens in a Volcano This special month-long holy event involves a volcano, the tourist hot spot Bromo, and lots of people throwing stuff in it. The Chief of Tourism and Culture of Pasuruan Sub-district, Agung Maryono explained some activities and rituals preceding the event. Tenggerese shamans (dukun) and the guardian of the earth (mangku) hold the Mendak Tirta Rite, which entails picking up holy water from the natural springs around. Tenggerese living on Bromo’s eastern side in Probolinggo Sub-district fetch the water from Madakaripura Waterfall and the people around Lumajang take the water from Ranu Pane. Meanwhile the people on the western side of Bromo in Pasuruan and Malang take the water from the spring in the Widodaren Cave. Shamans from various villages then keep the spring water within the Luhur Poten Temple. The fetching of water coincides with Piodala, the celebration of the temple anniversary. On Sunday, local artists present Tari Tayub (dances) and various performances at the bank of the Bromo caldera. Before midnight on Sunday, the congregation gathers around the Luhur Poten Temple, in the middle of the vast plain of Segara Wedi, (Sea of Sand) at the foothill of Bromo. The senior among the shamans presides the rite, asking the blessing of Sang Hyang Widi Wasa and God of Mahameru. After receiving holy water from their shamans, the mass proceeds along the crater edge, throwing away their ongkek (offerings) into the crater. Sacrifices could include agricultural products, cattle, chickens and other things. Kasada, a celebration based on a legend Yadnya Kasada is a legend based cultural celebration of the 15th century, when Princess Roro Anteng and her husband, Joko Seger reluctantly met their promise to sacrifice their youngest daughter, Kesuma, their 25th child. Bromo gods and deities had the couple sacrifice their daughter in return for their blessing of

The Tenggerese are very proud of their traditions; strictly observing their traditional Hinduism, it differs from Balinese Hinduism. The old Javanese dialect they speak represents no social classes as the current Javanese does; no distinction between Ngoko, Kromo and Kromo Inggil, the three different levels of Javanese. Some of 50.000 Tenggereses live under the spiritual leadership of the appointed shaman. Kasada is the moment of sacrificing and improving their relationship with gods and deities but also the best time to choose their shaman among the congregation. The shaman appointed for each village, has to be able to memorise all the spells and chair all the rituals. Mount Bromo meassures about 2.770 metres above sea level and is set in the middle of a vast plain, Segara Wedi, Sea of Sand. The volcano and the surroundings are part of a natural reservation since 1919. Some people used to take sulphur from the caldera and sell it to companies or agents to make a living. Since it is an active mountain, this is not without risk. In 2004, an eruption caused some damage and killed two people. On the evening of Tuesday, 23 and 26 November 2010, it erupted again. The region experienced the same disaster last 22 to 28 January 2011. Amid such natural disasters, watching Tenggerese celebrate Kasada shows us that observing traditional heritage sometimes comes at a risk. 

Celebrate Life We came across a lad from A company. He was ripped open from his shoulder to his waist by shrapnel and lying in a pool of blood. When we got to him, he said: ‘Shoot me’. He was beyond human help and, before we could draw a revolver, he was dead. It’s an image that has haunted me all my life, seared into my mind. ~Harry Patch (1898 – 2009)

The Jakarta War Cemetery By Martin Jenkins

N

ot many people know it, but nestled behind Jakarta’s Park Lane Hotel (just off Jalan Casablanca) there is a British World War II Cemetery. I only heard about it from a good friend, and with Remembrance Day just gone (9 Nov Canada, 11 Nov UK), I decided to make a visit. The cemetery is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and it is to their immense credit and to that of the Indonesian caretaker as well - that the cemetery is in absolutely immaculate condition.

All the dead are commemorated by a name on a headstone which are ALL exactly the same regardless of military or civil rank, race or creed. It’s certainly a humbling experience to walk around the cemetery and read the poignant inscriptions on the headstones of the mostly very young men buried here. Altogether there are over 1,000 graves (954 identified): those of the soldiers who died in the defence of Java and Sumatra during the Japanese advance in 1942, and also the many others who perished afterwards as Japanese prisoners of war.

Visiting procedure The Jakarta cemetery can be reached by two main roads - Jalan Dr Saharto and Jalan Casablanca. It is open between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00 pm. Monday to Friday. Gain access to the cemetery by ringing the bell and waiting for the caretaker to let you in. He will ask you to sign a visitors’ book before you take a look around. The cemetery can’t get many visitors, so make sure to slip the guy a Rp20,000 note or something when you leave. Also when you visit, take the opportunity to visit the equally poignant Netherlands Field of Honour which is located directly

adjacent to the British World War II Cemetery. Unlike the British, the Dutch do use crosses and the cemetery is just like those in Northern France or Belgium – with the crosses perfectly set and stretching far out into the distance… 

Meet the Expats

Hallo Klaas Kemp! The

Servus Anna Rohm! The German Director of Rooms at the Mandarin Oriental.

You’ve been living in Jakarta for 2 years now. Where were you living before and why did you take the plunge into Jakarta’s hotelier industry? I lived in the Middle East for almost 6 years in UAE, Egypt and Jordan. Having worked a good amount of time in the Middle East I wanted to try out Asia. Although I knew Jakarta was the capital of Indonesia, I did not know anything about Indonesia besides knowing about Bali. I came to Jakarta initially (besides the fact that it was Asia) because of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel chain. Known to be a prestigious luxury hotel chain I could not say “no” to the job. What are the Director of Rooms’ responsibilities? Does this vary from hotel to hotel? The Director of Rooms is responsible for short and long term planning and day-today operations of the rooms and related areas. Major areas of responsibility/ management include: Front Office, Guest Services, Housekeeping, Uniform Services, and Concierge. I also participate in total hotel management as a member of the hotel’s Executive Committee. The structure of the management may change from hotel to hotel, for example some Director of Rooms have more areas such as Fitness and Wellness or Security. In other hotels they may not have a Director of Rooms, but work with a Front Office Manager/ rooms division manager reporting to a Director of Operations who would be in charge of all operational functions such as Engineering/Food & Beverage/ Housekeeping/Front Office/Security. So – yes! It does vary from hotel to hotel depending on the property and structure.

favourite drink). But his favourite is when I take him on vacations. He loved Bali being at the beach and playing with the waves. He also enjoyed going to Jogyakarta and visiting Borobudur and Prambanan. Is it hard to be a single mum in Jakarta? Personally, I think that Asia/Middle East are the easiest places to be a single working mum. In Europe and North America the household help and nannies are simply unaffordable. Having the possibility to have a nanny while I work has been making my life a lot easier. My experiences with the Indonesian nannies have been very good. The way they love and adore children and care for them has made my job of leaving my child in someone else’s care while I work a lot more bearable. Since living in Jakarta, have you noticed any improvements that have made living here easier for you? I can’t complain about anything in particular (not even the traffic as I luckily do not have to do much commuting around Jakarta). As you answer this interview, what object do you have to the right of your computer screen that stands out the most? What traits does this object share with you? Besides mentioning a rather classic answer of a picture of my family and son along with his paintings, I have pictures from my top performing front desk staff. They are probably the most personal items I have in the office. I am really lucky that I have such a good team. My staff are happy, energised, outgoing and caring people that I have an enormous amount of respect for. What are 3 things you couldn’t live without in Jakarta? Laptop (connection with friends and family abroad). Beer (but that I couldn’t live without in general being a true German at heart). Going out with my friends.

I hear you have an adorable son. What’s his name and how old is he? His name is Amir Laurent but his nick name is Lolo. He is now four years old.

What’s been your most memorable New Year’s Eve memory? In Venice when I had friends and family visit me in my home. I cooked a lavish feast of Italian food, accompanied by good wine. Walking the streets of Venice by night going to San Marco Square and watching the fireworks from Rialto bridge. Once all of us came home, my brother and I went out to the only disco of Venice at the time which was very amusing.

Where do you take him to have fun? SHOPPING MALLS!!! YEAY!!! ( joke) My Son and I vary with our activities. One of my favourite activities is when he asks me to go out and have a pizza with him. I have gone a couple of times to Rangunan Zoo. We enjoy being outdoors and that is one area that I feel free to let him run about without worrying about traffic. I went to Ancol with him to the Seaworld more than once. On lazy days him and I will be at the pool in MO sharing a Mango Fitness (his

How will you be celebrating New Year’s Eve this year? I will be at the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta this year. My sister is currently visiting me from Austria. I will enjoy a sumptuous but relaxing dinner at Lyon and then watch the action of the New Year’s bustle right on my very own doorstep in front of Mandarin Oriental. Actually I will watch the fireworks with my sister from our Club Lounge on the 21st floor, we are so lucky to have such a great location! 

Have you had to build on any specific traits or qualities to be successful in this city? And if so, what are they? Patience ;-)

Dutchman with Indonesian citizenship who first came to Indonesia in 1947 on a Navy ship. You are quite well known among the expat circles in Indonesia. How long have you been living here and how did you first arrive in Indonesia? Including my time in the Navy, I’ve been here 44 years. In 1947 I was drafted for the Dutch navy. After three months training in Hilversum, I got three weeks tropen verlof and on September 6th I boarded the troopship Sloterdijk voor N.O.I. and my first landfall was at Sabang. The next stop was Batavia where I disembarked, a few days later I was sent to Soerabaja (Surabaya) where I boarded the Ambon, a small war ship that was being repaired. Half of the crew was on vacation in Bali and when the next party went to Bali I was included, that was a good start for me. My first patrol brought me for a two week duty between Semarang and Rembang. The following months we patrolled the islands in the Riau Archipelago, followed by trips to Borneo, Celebes and in August 1948 we visited the island of Ambon for a celebration when the Dutch first landed on the island 350 years ago. In Makassar we stopped a week for small repairs en then went on to Batavia. When entering the narrow mine free canal I was standing on deck and saw something floating, the guy next to me shouted a mine, panic. We were off course and in the middle of a mine field! The water was crystal clear and we were all posted along the railing to watch out for mines. With a machine gun they managed to sink the mine and we arrived safely in Batavia. Upon arrival I got a message that I was transferred to the MLD mess on van Heutzplein. I remained in Batavia the rest of my tour of duty and returned to Holland with the troopship Zuiderkruis. The end of November 1949 I was dismissed from the navy with a medal engraved with; voor orde en vrede (Order and Peace). A couple of months after my return from N.O.I., I was accepted by de Holland Amerika Lijn. On May 5th 1950, I made my first trip as waiter on the S.S. Veendam and served with the HAL for 24 years. I was often training new waiters when the cruise season started, that was my hobby. When the company started with Indonesian staff in 1971 I was sent to Indonesia as training manager in de Hotel school in Bandung. With five HAL staff and Indonesian teachers we trained 1400 boys to work on the cruise ships. In September 1973 the training was stopped and we were sent back to Holland to work aboard the HAL cruise ships. I resigned from the H.A.L and was accepted by Aero Wisata-GarudaKLM hotel group as training manager for the newly open hotels. I signed a contract in Den Haag and arrived in Jakarta Kartika Plaza Hotel early December 1973. I worked for the group until September 1977 and accepted an offer to work as GM in hotel Homann in Bandung to be

close to my family. This was a mistake and I resigned in March 1978. In April I accepted an offer from Oasis Restaurant where I introduced the Rijsttafel. What is your most memorable memory from serving in the Dutch royal navy in Indonesia? The navy also made use of RP’s (river patrol boats) in the Riau Archipelago with a crew of seven. All food was canned and heated on a charcoal fire, weather permitted. One of the RP’s got in a fight with a speedboat, several crewmembers were wounded and one died. The Ambon was called for help, the wounded and dead were taken over and brought to Tanjung Pinang. You managed ‘Memories’, the Old Dutch Colonial themed restaurant which was very famous in Jakarta. What’s your best memory from these days? My fondest memory was when a group of Naval Officers asked me to play the music HOLLANDS VLAG JE BENT MIJN GLORIE and they all were singing along. Is the restaurant business a difficult industry to run in Indonesia? If you have enough money and know your way through the bureaucracy it is not a difficult business to run. Do you ever want to return to The Netherlands? The answer is NO! When I returned to The Netherlands in 1949 I promised myself to return to Indonesia, as I love the country and above all, the people. What is life like in Bandung? Nice, cool and no disturbing AC. I stay home over the weekends as the Jakarta tourists overflow the city. Are there any sights in Bandung that a visitor must see? The Tangkuban Prahu Mountain is a must. An angklung (a musical instrument made of bamboo) performance is also highly recommended. How did you stumble into the world of antiquities? When I came to live in Bandung, when working for the H.A.L., every night some men passed by with all kinds of antiquities. They started unwrapping the stuff and I got interested and bought some pieces. My wife also liked it and soon my house was overflowing with all the stuff I bought. Any advice for someone who would like to start collecting antiques in Indonesia? Know that 99% of what you’re buying is a fake. You celebrated your birthday last week. May I ask how old and did you celebrate in style? I am now 85 years old. Our traditional dish for festivities is NASI UDUK with our family. Do you have any advice for our readers on how to live a happy life? If you have a quarrel with you wife, don’t go to sleep before you’ve made up. That’s very good advice. Thank you Klaas! Celebrate Food

Have the Guts to Eat from the Street By Hush Petersen

pure hell. I don’t think I’ve ever been in that much pain.” The story could be one of delectable culinary discovery or one of great gutwrenching sickness that kept you up all night and into the next day. The delectable discovery gives you street credit when you take out-of-towners on a tour of your town and the night of hugging the toilet can be worn like a badge of courage the next time the subject of street food comes up over cocktails. Jakarta’s street food dragons are the tales of near-death experiences that come with venturing into the abyss. You never know what’s going to come with walking up to a random food stall. All you can say for certain is that you’re going to walk away with a great story. “I was literally telling someone just the other day about how you know it’s a good one when your hands are up against the wall,” says Elliot Rossbach, who spent three years in Jakarta before moving back to the US for graduate school. “After living in Jakarta for a month I considered myself a country expert who had established substantial time punching the porcelain clock. I thought my stomach was ready for anything. Then one time I was in Kota with some local friends who wanted street food.

T

here are two kinds of people in Jakarta: the ones that eat street food and the ones that don’t.

The ones that do boast about late-night haunts, one-of-a-kind stalls and meals so good you’d sell your mother for another bite. The ones that don’t eat street food are, well…forgettable. If the fact that you might get sick stops you from doing anything—eating, travelling, enjoying life— your sense of adventure is the least of your worries. Jakarta knows food like no other city in the world. And like no other population in the world every Jakartan has their favourite street food stalls. Not only that, but for different dishes there are different locations. “Oh, if you want nasi uduk you have to

go to Palang Merah… if you want mie aceh you have to go to Ben Hil…or Blok S for bakso…” Sure there’s no air conditioning and sometimes the rats get a little too close to your toes. But it’s not an adventure worth telling if there aren’t any dragons. And that’s the most beautiful thing about Jakarta, one night you can eat a plate of nasi campur for 88 cents under some tawny single-bulb tent decorated with nothing but blue plastic stools and the next night, if your wallet is up to it you can head over to Hotel Kempinski’s Casa D’Oro complete with linen table cloths and a seven course degustation menu and then stare down a jawdropping bill at the end of the night. It’s your call.

When they asked me if I could stomach it I confidently told them ‘of course.’ I have no idea what I was eating but I piled on the cabe rawit and went home without acknowledging the unborn diarrhoea baby kicking like a pro baller inside me. He woke me up at 4:30 a.m. I have never, to this day, again had all four appendages pressed up against the wall in front of me while on the toilet.” “Actually, only time I ever got sick in Indonesia was from eating in a mall,” says Katherine Yue, an American social enterprise consultant living in Jakarta. “I love street food. You just have to be careful about hygiene. My favourite place is a stall in Setiabudi, but I don’t want to tell you because I don’t want to go there the next time and not be able to find a seat. You can go to Setiabudi and find the best sizzling

kangkung in a food stall. You’ll love it when you find it.” You could spend the rest of your life visiting random food stalls around the city and still not even taste the tip of the iceberg. Entire books are dedicated Jakarta’s street food. Everyone has a recommendation and everyone has a story. People wear them like badges, as if knowing the best spot in town for kepiting saus padang gives you some street credit. “There is definitely a badge of honour that comes with eating street food,” says Andrew Whitmarsh, author of a soonto-be-published walker’s guidebook to Jakarta. “For those of us who do it, we like to rub it in the face of those that don’t because it makes us seem tough, in-the-know and adventurous. There is probably no greater sub-section of the expat community than English teachers in terms of those that live off of street food.” But it’s not only being able to rattle off six or seven of the best spots in the city that gives you that validity. It’s the horror stories that come with getting sick off street food. “I had only been in Jakarta for two weeks when I got food poisoning at a Western restaurant here in Jakarta. It was horrendous. So bad in fact that I didn’t feel like smoking for weeks after that, which eventually turned into months and now 7 years later, I still haven’t smoked. Thank God for my Jakarta food poisoning.” “I have eaten a lot of street food though I usually try to get it to go as I don’t like the way they wash their dishes. It’s always so tasty and so cheap and from all those times, I only got food poisoning once, from martabak — unfortunately I’m so scarred from that martabak attack, I haven’t eaten it again since then.” Whether you eat street food is your call. But the next time you’re standing around chit chatting over Chardonnay about traffic and maids take a minute to think about what it would be like to be able to tell an interesting story. Remember, in life there are two kinds of people, the ones who have stories and the ones who don’t. 

For most of Jakarta’s expats, eating street food is something close to college hazing. “When I first moved here I would drive by the little carts and food stalls with my dad and he would point and say ‘Don’t eat there. Don’t do it,” says Buster Weathers, an American musician living and working in Jakarta. “But like most expats you’re kind of forced into eating in these places when you’re eating with your Indonesian friends. You don’t want to be labelled a wimp.” When Buster first came to Jakarta he lived on IndoMie and mall food. Then after a month and a half, Buster lost his streetfood virginity.

New Technology Something to Celebrate?

A

celebration is a party or special event at which you rejoice in something such as a birthday or a religious holiday, meaning as long as it’s a birthday (person or object) we can celebrate it! There are many technological advancements which we need to celebrate, and for me the iPod is one of them. Born on the 23rd of October 2001, this little device promised to put 1,000 songs in your pocket. The original creation of the iPod has significantly evolved over the years, at the same time as other nifty portable players competed for our affection. But there’s just something about the iPod that’s captured the hearts, ears and wallets of so many in every corner of the world.

developed the call handoff system. This technology facilitated phone calls from one area to another that would not be dropped. Cellular phones from the early 1990s are considered second generation (2G) and they were able to work on mobile phone systems such as GSM and CDMA. Third Generation cellular phones are the technology currently available and it is commonly referred to as 3G. While 3G came only a few years after 2G, mainly due to many innovations in technology and services, standards for 3G are usually different depending on the network, offering email and Internet access.

The iPod is a classic reason why we should celebrate technology. But is it all good? Do we use them all? Do we like them and more over should we celebrate the birth of them all? How about the Mobile Phone? The birth of the mobile phone: a gift or a curse? If we could celebrate the birth of the mobile phone we would celebrate its 25th anniversary. Although the technology is older (1947), in 1984 the first mobile phones were sold. It was called the DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) or “the brick” weighing over one kilogram and offering just half an hour of talk time for every recharge and sold for the price of US $3,995.

But the question is, are we happy with this new technology? Should we celebrate it? With the introduction of the mobile phone I think we have lost part of our privacy. People can reach us now 24/7 and moreover they can track us down knowing where we are up to the exact longitude/latitude. Nevertheless, on many top 10 lists including the top 101 of gadgets that have changed the world, which also includes duct tape and the stapler, the mobile phone is number one. 

Shoot and Win To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the mobile phone, send in a photo of yourself holding up your phone like this photo (but not rigged with Photoshop) and you could win a copy of the stunning book “Kretek” by Mark Hanusz. Send in your photograph with the model of your phone along with your name and email address to letters@jakartaexpat.biz The photo with the oldest mobile phone will be the winner and featured in our next edition! NB: Upon collection of your prize, you MUST present us with the old phone featured in the photo!

By 1967, mobile phone technology was available. However, the user had to stay within one cell area. Cell areas that a base station serviced were unable to handle cellular phone calls from one base station to another. While users could make a phone call, they were unable to continue the call after they reached a set range. In 1970, Amos Edward Joel, who also was an engineer at Bell Labs,

Nunun Nurbaeti, wife of former Deputy Chief of National Police Adang Daradjatun, is a key suspect in a bribery case surrounding the 2004 election of Bank Indonesia’s Deputy Governor. Having been on the run, she was finally captured by Interpol in Bangkok, Thailand and now faces the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on graft charges. She has been accused of distributing Rp. 24 billion ($2.7 million) in traveller’s cheques to lawmakers in return for their vote in electing Miranda Goeltom as Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia. Since her arrest, Nunun has claimed a variety of mental and health issues thus impeding the investigation. Her husband, current PKS legislator Adang Daradjatun who claims to have no knowledge of his wife’s illegal activities, has plead for leniency in light of her health issues, namely alleged amnesia, stress and high blood pressure. He has asked that his wife be situated in a comfortable place for questioning, preferably conducted outside the KPK building.

Should Nunun be given preferential treatment due to her alleged health issues? Or does this just highlight a fundamental flaw in the Indonesian judiciary system? • Send us your opinions to letters@jakartaexpat.biz and we’ll publish the best of the bunch right here!

Bali, a Smokefree Paradise? “This is so typical. They tried something similar in Jakarta a few years back when they decided Sudirman was to be a non smoking street (can you imagine, with all the traffic and exhausts from the old busses etc.?). Anyway, of course that didn’t work at all and neither will this. Why not start small and slowly to let people get used to the idea?” – Lens ter Wee “I disagree completely. When has anything been accomplished by starting slowly? I think the whole world should be smoke-free and Bali should set the example for the rest of Indonesia to follow. I’m sick of having to breathe in other people’s bad habits.” • Anonymous in Jakarta “I think the principal idea of making public places non-smoking is great, but it will take time to make work and can’t just be enforced overnight. The government should take time to plan this out so that it works in the long run.” • Bill

A Rare Christmas I by Eamonn Sadler

woke up early on Christmas day 1984, seriously hung-over after an inpromptu party the night before. The planned party at my place had been abandoned due to a lack of real beer (see previous issue), but we had made the best of it and had a great time with all the other revellers down at the White Hart, our tiny and ancient local pub, so no serious harm was done to the partying. I stumbled from my bedroom out to the living room to find my mates Phil and Ian fast asleep. Ian was fully clothed complete with coat and boots and had obviously slept exactly where he fell just inside the entrance. Phil had done a little better, and was on the sofa with his trousers round his ankles and

his arms above his head entangled in his sweat shirt, evidently having given up in the middle of an attempt to undress himself. We had agreed we would cook our Christmas lunch ourselves at my place this year, so it was time to get started. I kicked and shook Phil and Ian and shouted, “TURKEY TIME!! TURKEY TIME!!”at them until they groaned into consciousness and started questioning my parentage while suggesting I perform a physically impossible act with the turkey. Eventually they sat upright and looked around for a while until they got their bearings and pieced together enough evidence to work out where they were. “Oh.. right.. Merry f@#*ing Christmas,” Phil said, scratching his groin and

obviously full of seasonal cheer. After taking turns in the bathroom, the three of us stood in a row clutching mugs of hot coffee to our chests and looking silently at the huge raw bird sitting on my kitchen table. None of us had a clue where to start. Ian picked up a packet of ready-made stuffing and ventured the first guess. “I think you shove some of this crap up its arse first...” This was clearly going to be a challenge. Eventually, after several rather embarrassing phone calls to Phil’s mum, we had enough instructions to give it a go. We peeled potatoes and carrots and washed Brussels sprouts and followed all of Phil’s mum’s instructions. A couple of

hours later the three of us were standing in the kitchen with a turkey in the oven and pots bubbling on every corner of the stove. We were quite pleased with ourselves. What was all the fuss about? Nothing to it. We should do this every year!

were rock hard and the stuffing up the bird’s arse was stone cold. Half an hour later we were with our respective families pleading for food. And actually, in the end, I was glad. If you have a choice, you should always be with your family at this time of year.

We sat down for lunch a little after 1pm. All the trimmings were there and all the colours were right, everything looked great. We raised our glasses and wished each other a Merry Christmas before I started hacking at the fat brown bird with my sharpest knife, while the other two started piling their plates high with vegetables.

Wherever you are, and whoever you are with this year, Merry Christmas! 

It was awful. The turkey was blood red in the centre, the vegetables

Food & Drink

Aphrodite

10 Years and Still Going Strong

I

’m not going to sugar coat this place, not going to sprinkle casting sugar and throw tinsel all over it. I’m going to call it like it is. Aphrodite is a pub, a sports bar if you will. A living room for many expats who live in the area to unwind in after work with some good pub grub and a game of pool with friends.

The front man, the face of this place, is Frederick Alloysius, who is originally from India and has been living in Jakarta for 17 years. “You see this Venus statue? When we first opened 10 years ago she had a firm derriere,” he tells me over a Chivas aged 18 with a dash of sparkling mineral water, apparently known as the ‘Fred Special’. Fred is a laid back guy with some funny stories to tell. “My dad was meant to marry my grandmother,” he says, explaining the concept of Indian fixed marriages. Luckily that never happened and his dad married a Malaysian woman instead, narrowly avoiding a catastrophe.

Fred & Daniel 10 years ago (2001)

When Fred first moved to Jakarta he was a DJ, spinning 90s house music, which he admits he did get into eventually, despite tracks like ‘Night Train’ which still reverberates in his ears. “My job was to make people scream and shout,” which is still something he does now. A few years in, he partnered up with Swiss/Frenchman Daniel Gendre, the chef of the Aphrodite group, which now includes Kinara, Fez Club, Liquid Exchange and Aphrodite. “We came up with the idea of this place after a few drinks, like everything else in life I guess!” remarks Fred.

Fred & Daniel today! Do you

notice any changes?

Daniel quit everything he had in 1999 to move to Indonesia on a whim. “I was being adventurous, but it wasn’t the best time to move here because there were army officers on the streets and everything was unsettled.” Now he is the proud father of one and calls Jakarta his home. Based on the idea of aphrodisiac cuisine, Aphrodite was originally split between the restaurant area and the bar, and sport was never the centre of attention. They used to have just 4 bulky TV screens and now they have 12 slick flat screens dotted around the place, numbered so guests conveniently know what will be playing on which screen. Manchester United fans one end, Liverpool fans down the other. A smart move. Fred reminisces, “Back in the day, we had a

lounge area here, a wine bar there, a restaurant where you’re sitting, a bar over there and a pool table back there. If you were to ask anyone to invest they’d probably laugh in your face, but it worked!” Now this bar is all open planned and food is served everywhere. Interestingly the floor is carpet, which you don’t often find in Jakarta’s drinking establishments. “I’m having it changed with new carpet,” Fred tells me. “It’s become a giant ashtray, but it keeps the acoustics good.” Best sellers from the kitchen include the Build Your Own Steaks, Chicken Fillets, Nasi Goreng Kambing (apparently an aphrodisiac) and the classic Caesar Salad. The restaurant also caters to outside events. So how do the duo plan to keep up with the times in an ever-changing world after being around for 10 years already? Technology is the answer. This pub has an online music player (aphroditedj.com) where punters enter a password and choose songs that they want to hear next on the sound system. Users can vote other songs up or down the list, giving way for a bit of fun competition. “We tried it two weeks ago and it was fun, although the more drunk people got, the more ridiculous their song choices. We had songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star being played!” All sports are recorded in the house of Venus so that guests can request on-demand games. There are also cameras above the pool table so disputes can be easily resolved upon playback. In the future Fred also hopes to have wireless speakers on each table, which can be set to whichever game viewers are watching. Innovative stuff. Aphrodite’s schedule is always packed. Besides round the clock live sports, they bring you Ladies Nights on Thursdays AND Saturdays from 8pm until midnight with free beers and house spirits. Wednesday nights are Back to School with music from the 70s through to the 90s. Pool lovers enjoy Monday nights where you pay Rp.25,000 for a beer and a game of pool and winners get free drinks vouchers. New Year’s Eve is set to be a big one with a ‘Hippie & Gypsy’ theme, which, if Fred isn’t losing his touch when it comes to throwing parties, is set to be a big one. Who would’ve thought that a bar set inside a fitness centre would be celebrating its 10th anniversary? With all the crazy times and memories Fred and Daniel have, they can confidently say, “Bring on the next ten years.” 

ing care not only the garden but also keeping the outside area’s mopped and dusted as well as window cleaning and odd jobs around the home. Pak Ata’s English is limited but all the jobs get done as requested. Pak Ata has been employed with us on a part-time basis since June 2009, initially 2.5 days a week but is now doing 4.5 days a week after his other part-time family moved on. Should you wish to meet with Pak Ata or contact me for further details please call 0813 19697889 or patricia.hillock@gmail.com Absolutely reliable driver available from 1 January 2012. Since we are leaving Jakarta our driver Heru will be available for a new family here in Jakarta. Heru is about mid 50, and is a very reliable and punctual driver, with a warm and good sense of humour. He seems to know every corner and narrow street in Jakarta (and Java), and will always do his outmost to bring you to your destination safe and fast. He has a good English, and we can only give him our warmest recommendation. Please contact: Kirsten - e-mail: kirstenmariager@hotmail.com Pak Nasim had worked for Alstrom for 28 yrs and since the close down of his department, he volunteered to leave and worked as personal driver. He is honest, diligent & helpful. He is elderly and has no attitude problems. He would prefer jobs in Jakarta Selatan where there are no dogs in the house. Pak Nassim is highly recommended. If interested, kindly call Ratna @ +6282112108821 and/or Pak Nassin @ +6282122175174 Well trained and experienced live in maids and drivers available. For maid, it’s guaranteed for 3 months and I will get her replaced if she doesnt fit in. We will send her/him to your place by appointment. SMS Mieke at 0811843541 We have 2 excellent drivers after 1st Jan. They have been working with us for over 3 years. Munir and Nurman are excellent drivers. They know Jakarta very well and completely reliable. They don’t speak english but understand little. Please call them directly for interviews. Munir HP: 085885305809. Nurman HP:081514437688. I’m happy to answer questions via email: rizanurana@live.com BU SARINAH - Maid (live in) Ibu Sarinah has worked for us as a live in maid since in Feb 2008 - Dec 2011 and came highly recommended by another expat family. She is 60 years old and worked for expat families for about 40 years. She has excellent cleanliness and hygiene standards and is happy to look after pets. She worked in conjunction with our gardener who did the heavier cleaning i.e. the floors and windows while she looked after the rest of the house. Ibu Sarinah also speaks good English. She uses great initiative and will often surprise me by doing extra’s around our home such as arranging for the landlord to carry out routine maintenance or sewing name tapes onto children’s clothes. I completely trust her and at no time have I ever had to question her character or integrity. She has been responsible for payment of household bills

such as water, the garbage collectors etc. I have done my own cooking however Ibu Sarinah is always willing to help in any way she can and came recommended as a good cook. She has assisted in preparing simple children’s meals on occasion. Ibu Sarinah also assisted with looking after our young children both in conjunction with our nanny and on her own and was always willing to babysit. I would highly recommend Ibu Sarinah to anyone who is looking for a maid in Jakarta. Please feel free to contact me for any further references (tinasoppitt@yahoo.co.uk) or Sarinah direct – 0838834453
