ove it or hate it, Valentine’s Day has graced our presence yet again. A day dedicated to love if you’re in a relationship, and a day dedicated to hating anything associated with the word if you’re single. Good fun to be had on both ends of the spectrum really. Now the question is, does anyone actually know about the origins of V-Day and why we celebrate it? To be totally honest with you, I didn’t know either until I began researching for this edition. As it turns out, February 14th honours one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine – Valentine of Rome who was a priest in Rome martyred about AD 269 whose relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome, and Valentine of Terni who was a bishop martyred during the persecution under Emperor Aurelian whose relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni. So, what do flowers and greeting cards have to do with martyrdom? The answer is, not much. No romantic elements are present in the original early medieval biographies of either of these martyrs. By the time Saint Valentine became linked with romance in the 14th century, distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were completely lost.

The first recorded association of Valentine’s Day with romantic love is in Parlement of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer, author of the famous Canterbury Tales. In it he wrote:

[“For this was Saint Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”] The famous verse Roses are red… can be traced as far back as 1590 in Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene: “She bath’d with roses red, and violets blew, And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.” Since then, Valentine’s Day has been mentioned in poems, plays, novels, and in the 18th century in England, “mechanical valentines” were being printed with verses and sketches and following a reduction in postal rates in the 19th century, anonymously sending these cards became a sudden craze. Leigh Eric Schmidt, a writer in Graham’s American Monthly said in 1849, “Saint Valentine’s Day… is becoming, nay it has become, a national holiday.” There you have it, folks. All you need is love…

Romance has always been a mysterious unexplainable enigma, but with the advancement of science, this notion is being challenged and the most exhilarating of human emotions may just be nature’s way of keeping the human race alive and procreating.

Lust is driven by testosterone and oestrogen, the male and female sex hormones. Fisher explains that these hormones “get you out looking for anything.� Stage 2: "553"$5*0/ This is that phase where you’re well and truly smitten and can think of nothing else. You may lose your appetite and need less sleep, preferring to spend hours at a time daydreaming about your new lover. Love, in other words, uses the neural mechanisms that are activated during the process of addition. Serotonin may explain why when you’re falling in love, your new love keeps popping into your thoughts. Stage 3: ATTACHMENT Attachment is the bond that keeps couples together, long enough to have and raise children. We couldn’t be stuck in attraction forever otherwise we’d never get any work done! Important in this phase are two hormones which are released by the nervous system: t 0YZUPDJO – The cuddle hormone This is a powerful hormone released by men and women during orgasm. Oxytocin deepens the feelings of attachment and makes couples feel much closer after they’ve had sex. The theory goes that the more sex a couple has, the deeper their bond becomes. When male prairie voles are given a drug that suppresses the effect of
vasopressin, the bond with their partner deteriorates immediately as they lose their devotion and fail to protect their partner from new suitors. York psychologist, Professor Arthur Arun, has been studying why people fall in love. T
he early days of the expatriate in South East Asia, back in the 16th and 17th centuries were fraught with danger and the unknown. Never knowing when a passing ship would call in and take them home and consumed with a fear they may never make it back, some of those intrepid pioneers would often seek solace in the charms of an obliging local lady. Those who felt they were doing God’s work had their faith to keep them going but the traders, sailors and those others with a predilection towards sins of the flesh were more tempted and their offspring are still to be found in pockets of Asia, known as Eurasians.
officials or businessmen, started to bring their wives who, infused with a mini religious revival that was hitting the newly wealthy, sniffed at the decadence they saw around them and imported western values and mores. Well, their idea of western values and mores. The rough as nails hard drinking three decade vet was pushed aside with these new notions of status, name cards and mixed relationships which, the newly arrived ladies considered, beneath contempt. Indeed, any intercourse with the natives was deeply frowned upon by the new breed who , wrapped up in their cocoon of faith and privilege, loathed what they saw as the heathen local’s indolence and ineptitude. Rudyard Kipling had talked of the ‘white man’s burden’ and the new arrivals embraced this fully. But for two centuries before men had come to the east, settled down and raised families, intermingling with the local community and attaining positions of trust. And not just Europeans of course. There are records of sailors from Zheng He’s mighty treasure fleets settling down on the north coast of Java, marrying local women and adopting the local ways of life.
As the years turned into decades and decades into centuries, technological advances plus the opening of the Suez Canal, cut journey times and expats found the home country wasn’t so far away after all. The East’s riches had attracted more and more and over time the gruff, hoary old colonial, finely follicled and lord of his own manor started to become an anachronism.
The port of Banten, just west of Jakarta, was the premier trading entrepot before Singapore arrived on the scene and like any port town it rocked to the sound of sailor’s shanties and randy seaman looking for their own piece of loving before their next extended shuttle round the eastern islands of the archipelago; a 17th century Pattaya. The raucous town is now not much more than a distant memory. Not only have the ships and sailors been long gone, even the sea shore has retreated from the once rowdy streets.
The expat scene, such as it was, morphed from the drunken debauchery of those pioneers into a mirror image of genteel, middle class Europe with all its attendant prejudices and attention to status. Men posted to the region, be they government
The archetypal image of course is of the bluff, red faced planter huffing and puffing out on the plantations far from ‘civilised’ society though a weekly trip to the club sated the desire to mix with his own kind. Out in the jungle though, beneath the canopy and
amid the mighty jungles that still housed tigers and leopards in large numbers, he satisfied his lustful desires in other ways. Considered a classic piece of colonial literature by those who consider these things, Henri Fauconnier’s Soul of Malaya tells the tale of a French planter who arrives in pre independence Malaya just after the First World War who soon gets involved with the Tamil gardener’s wife. The planter tries, half heartedly, to justify the tryst by saying he gets useful information but even he knows that’s not true. He is a bit confused at first by the woman’s attitude. He has been given to understand that usually when a local lady has been invited to share the white man’s bedroom she will then use her new found status to lord it over others and seek advantages for herself and her family. His partner though is discreet and he finds it mildly amusing, initially assuming, no doubt with a Gallic shrug of the shoulders, she is just a nymphomaniac; that she was attracted by the sex and not the man. She was after an orgasm, not some baubles. Of course despite her discreetness the whole estate knows what’s going on and he finds out, from a colleague, that in the Tamil gardeners’ mind, he does not count. He has no caste and the idea of sharing his wife with the boss is on a level with the ancients sharing their wives with gods who fancy a bit of mortal once in a while. It is also revealed that the estate lacks a garden so perhaps the gardener is just ensuring he keeps his job! Of course what is ok for the ulu is not okay for the city and by the early days of the 20th century when rubber prices were booming, new staff being sent east were told they could not get married during their first tour of duty and once they were in country they soon found out that consorting with a local woman was a total breach of etiquette with disastrous consequences for the career of an ambitious young buck.
Even after the Second World War single men would often have to seek permission from their employer before they could get married. One gentleman in England wrote to the government of Sarawak, also based in England, asking for permission to tie the knot and was only allowed to do so once agreement from Sarawak had been received! He received this good news in the form of a short, bureaucratic letter; Dear Sir With reference to your letter dated 30th May, I have received a telegram from Sarawak that your request to marry is approved. Yours faithfully Government Agent. Romantic bunch! It’s not just men of course who have been seduced by the charms of the Orient. Consider the case of the late Cleo Odzer. She went to Thailand to catalogue the stories of men who went to Bangkok looking for love. Or lust. In her mind it was all the same thing and the opening chapters of her book ‘Patpong Sisters’ show her contempt for subjects. However she changes her tune when she herself falls for a young Thai man who works as a tout at a bar in the busy Patpong Road area. No one, it seems, is immune to the charms of the east! "

T
hat’s the most stupid fake date on earth! When I was a teenager in Europe, it even didn’t exist (or maybe it did but I didn’t notice). We didn’t used to celebrate this date despite that it basically comes from the Roman Empire. Then when I was 20 or something like this, America sent us this “date” like they sent MacD, Halloween, George Bush, Donald Trump or many other things that we couldn’t invent by ourselves! Basically it makes the flower shops happy and the restaurants well adapted to this mess harass us with special dinner offers and others flower discounts. The result is that we feel either guilty if we don’t buy flowers and organise a candle-lit dinner or we feel sad and miserable if we don’t have someone to buy the flowers for. Not to mention having a single dinner surrounded by hundred of couples who whisper, “Darling, look at the guy alone with his red wine pitcher.” Because yes, if you are alone at the restaurant on this date, then the entire world is pitying you! For the singles, it ends up being a sad and lonely evening in front of the TV watching “The Bachelor Season 28”. At this step, you even would prefer to be the empty brain bachelor, James, who is giving the roses to a dozen young ladies who have the IQ of sick chicken! Then you finally go to bed and a few stupid friends still send you some ridiculous BBM messages or SMSs to wish you a Happy Valentine. At this point, you decide to finally open the old single malt that you hide for special occasions. Then you drink, and you drink until the “brides” (the bachelorettes in French) even seem to have a brain when they explain to James, “Sweet heart, death is a terrible thing you know. James, I hope one day I will have 20 kids. James, I like the way you wax your shoes. James, the salmon is extremely well
cooked. James, have you read this amazing book called the bible?”
suddenly they wake up in total panic and curse 200 times in a row.
Then you continue to drink your whisky and you switch to HBO. Fantastic, they’re screening the “Noting Hill” story where Julia Robert falls in love with a bookseller. An idea comes into your mind suddenly. What chance do I have that Julia Roberts is driving her car alone in a suburb of Yogjakarta, gets into engine trouble in her new Porsche, then walks in the middle of the rice field to finally reach my green gate to ask for help? I don’t even talk about falling in love with me half drunk dressed with my printed t-shirt “Bakso Malang Aku Suka”! One chance on 6 billion... So I finally hate that movie, too. But you have the other category; people in couples who are really expecting something big for this bloody date. I must say that the ones who are waiting for something amazing are basically the ladies. As for us, the men, we are stupid enough to forget even our own birthdays or other wedding anniversaries so there’s not much chance we will remember the 14th of February.
They are not drunk anymore at all. omen from the arid island of Madura, east of Java, are famed for their ability to enhance sexual intercourse by the rhythmic clenching of their vaginal muscles. Some even take classes in sexual gymnastics to learn this supposedly secret technique, which has been passed down through generations over hundreds of years. Many also use tongkat Madura, a cigar-shaped rod made from limestone and various herbal extracts, which is said to cleanse, tighten and dry the vagina. Why a dry vagina? Actually, the aim is not for complete dryness but rather for tightness, which is partly achieved by reducing vaginal discharge and secretions. Many Indonesians believe a really wet vagina makes for unsatisfying sex. Thus, women are advised not to eat pineapple, cucumber or watermelon, as these foods are reputed to cause wetness. After childbirth, a woman may be encouraged to take various potions to restore the tightness of her vagina. The point of all this is to please her husband, so that he will be less likely to abandon her in favour of a younger woman. The reasoning is that if a husband fools around, it is entirely his wife’s fault for failing to satisfy him in bed. This sort of ingrained cultural sexism is up there with telling women they should have light skin if they want to be more attractive. There are even products for whitening the labia. The many herbal tonics, pills and gels for tightening the vagina have names such as Sari Rapet (Essence of Tightness), Galian Rapet (Tight Digger), Rapet Wangi (Tight & Fragrant), Jampi Rapet (Tightening Spell) and Empot-Empot Ayam (Tight as a Chicken’s Arse). These concoctions are a growing industry, raking in millions of dollars a year. Tabloid newspapers are stuffed with adverts for such products and local aphrodisiacs, which take up entire aisles in some supermarkets. Many traditional healers offer tightening treatments, often with Islamic themes, reinforcing the notion that it is a woman’s religious obligation to serve her husband’s sexual needs by having a taut, virginal vagina. Tongkat Madura, which is marketed online under names such as ‘virgin stick’ and ‘tightening soap’, has gained minor popularity in Japan but is yet to make major inroads into Western markets, perhaps due to cultural differences and a lack of clinical testing. It has penetrated Saudi Arabia, according to vendors in Central Jakarta. “My main customers are Arab men. They buy in bulk and take it back home to Saudi,” says Susi, who sells

a range of aphrodisiacs at Senen market. “When Saudi Customs question them about it, they say it is a foot scrub product.� The tongkat (which literally means ‘stick’ or ‘rod’) is about 8 to 10 centimetres long, with a diameter of 1 to 2.5 centimetres. It is made primarily from limestone calcite mineral, purportedly combined with a variety of herbal ingredients. Calcite is astringent, meaning it causes body tissues and canals to constrict; hence the tightening power of the tongkat. As for the herbal components, one of them is reputed to be high in testosterone, which may explain why some Madurese women are regarded as a bit wild. The ingredients are all marketed as being pure and found only on Madura, although some tongkat are now made in China. One vendor says most of the ingredients come from Kalimantan. “Madura is small and too dry. How it could supply everything?� Each stick is hygienically sealed in plastic and has a cigarlike band of authenticity around the centre, as well as a brief instruction manual in Indonesian, Chinese and broken English. They smell a bit like incense sticks. Vendors claim the tongkat will stimulate and intensify mutual excitement during sex. It is also supposed to eliminate vaginal discharges, irritation, yeast infections and odour. Directions for use are as follows: Wash your hands, your vagina and the tongkat. Insert the tongkat at least 5 centimetres into the vagina, keep it there from 15 seconds to 2 minutes (depending on efficacy for the individual user) and then slowly remove it. Wash and dry it after use. Apparently it works best when used anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour prior to intercourse. The sticks have an advertised lifespan of three to six months, or shorter if dropped and broken. The price of a tongkat ranges from just Rp8,000 all

Another traditional remedy for purifying and drying the vagina is kendedes, which involves sitting on a special chair with a hole in the seat, beneath which is a charcoal fire of aromatic herbs creating a fragrant steam. Some men complain the resulting smoky fragrance is anything but pleasant. There are concerns that reducing the vagina’s natural lubrication could be detrimental to reproductive health and increase the risk of disease. A dry vagina is more likely to get scratches or lesions during intercourse, which heightens the likelihood of infection with sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. There are plenty of temptations for philandering husbands. Alongside the tabloid ads for vagina tightening products are numerous listings for freelance prostitutes, as well as brothels advertised as massage parlours. The Indonesian government has generally been unwilling to investigate the efficacy and possible dangers of traditional vaginal medicines. Instead, the Health Ministry’s Drug and Food Control Agency registers such products without bothering to clinically test them. Foreign websites flogging tongkat Madura at least carry health warnings, if only for legal reasons. They advise buyers not to use the rod during menstruation and pregnancy, and warn that it cannot cure sexually transmitted diseases. Some Indonesian women are sceptical about the powers of the tongkat Madura. “My friends and I tried it a few years ago and it did nothing, apart from maybe clearing up a yeast infection� says Nurani, a Sumatran businesswoman. She

says vaginal tightening can be achieved simply by clenching exercises, which are known as Kegels. Dr Arnold Kegel was an American gynaecologist who in 1940s developed pelvic muscle exercises to help women control incontinence after childbirth. He noted the exercises also improved sexual feeling. For women wishing to try these exercises, here’s a quick guide. First, next time you pee, try to stop midstream without contracting your buttocks or thighs. If you can do this, you have located your pubococcygeus muscles, which support the bladder and anus. After holding for a few seconds, continue to pee. You can also try to imagine you are restraining flatulence. Once you have isolated the muscles, practice clenching and unclenching them (without peeing), holding for 5 seconds at a time. After mastering that over a week or two, you can then increase to 10 second sets and eventually try it during sex. Madurese women say Kegels is just another name for something they have been practicing for centuries. Yati, who works at a traditional beauty salon in West Jakarta, boasts that when it comes to making a man happy, Madurese women have the most experience and skills. Contrary to my opinion that it’s still a man’s world in Indonesia, Yati says tongkat Madura is all about giving equal pleasure to women.

The Danish Aussie animal lover who’s lived in more countries than most people will ever visit.
Where do you come from? I am half Australian and half Danish. I’m officially an Australian, and I was born in Canberra, which I regret to say. Probably one of the most boring places in the worldno offence to anyone. My mother is from Denmark, from a town called Viborg and my father an Australian born in Sydney. How long have you lived in Indonesia? I believe I first moved to Indonesia because my father was posted here as the Ambassador for Australia in 1975. I was only 16, and I attended the Jakarta Embassy School (which is now known as JIS). After graduating in 1977 I worked in the Ragunan Zoo for the Orangutan Rehab centre with a very eccentric and amazing woman named Ulrike Von Mengden. I worked for a period of eight months until I moved to Kalimantan to help set up a Rehabilitation Centre for Orangutans. The centre was founded by the WWF and run by the arboreal department of the University of Copenhagen, which was part of my University course. I spent one year in Kalimantan and left in 1979. Then moved back to Indonesia with my husband and my four children in 1991 until now. So I think that makes a total of 25 years... that’s half my life! Being the daughter of a diplomat, I hear you’ve moved around quite a bit. Apart from Indonesia, which other countries have you lived in and which has been your favourite so far? Let’s start from the beginning. Born in Australia, moved to Russia, then to Malaysia, then Singapore then we moved back to Australia for a couple of years, until my father was posted to Ghana. Following that we moved to Indonesia then to the Philippines where my father was posted as Ambassador. After that was Denmark. I moved back to the Philippines then moved to New York City where I got married to my husband. Following that we moved to Singapore then Thailand then back to America to a town called Darien, in Connecticut. Then back again to the Philippines. Lastly and finally back to Indonesia. Wow, that was hard to remember. So my favourite amongst the countries I lived in was definitely Ghana. In Ghana it was the people. I loved the people. I found that they were really very nice. And of course the animals! Animals have always been my passion from a young age. Wow, that’s a total of 10 countries! So tell us a little bit about your family. Where does your husband come from and how long have you been married for?
Meet Simon L. I have four children, one girl born in the Philippines, Bianca. Then Marco my oldest son was born in Singapore. Then my twins Nicholas and Paolo were born in Connecticut. My husband’s name is Roberto Antonio Feliciano and he is from the Philippines, but funnily enough I met him not while I lived in the Philippines but in New York City, where he worked for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Bank. We got married in Cold Springs, New York and had our honeymoon in Boston. We have our 26th Anniversary on March 21st! I can’t believe I’ve been married for 26years. It’s impossible! Any plans for Valentines Day? Well, normally I don’t like planning ahead. Pretty sure I’m leaving that for my husband to surprise me! Apart from your family, I’ve been told you also have a love for animals and orangutans in particular! Could you tell us a little about the charities or organisations you’ve been involved in over the years? I have only ever been involved with the World Wild Life Foundation and their orangutan programmes in Kalimantan, Sumatra and the rehabilitation centre in Jakarta. While my oldest son Marco was in JIS I helped organise a Charity Run to raise money for food, medicines and supplies for the Rehabilitation Centre in the Ragunan zoo which always needs any kind of assistance. Do you have any funny or fond memories from your time working with orangutans? God... many! I guess one of the funniest stories happened here in the rehab centre when I worked with Ulrike Von Mengden. The baby orangutans had this habit of using Ms. Von Mengden’s toilet as their personal hair salon in which they’d stick and flush their heads into the toilet bowl, they would continue to spit the toilet water at all of us and use their hands to mess up their wet hair. They were so funny! They would come out of the toilet walking around like they were half drunk. Baby orangutans are the cutest things. Working in the field is an experience that is indescribable. What organisations would you could recommend for other animal lovers interested in volunteering here in Indonesia? Well, I have been out of the loop for awhile now. There is only one I can really recommend, which is the Orangutan Rehabilitation centre at the Ragunan Zoo, here in Jakarta. But my advice is, if you love animals, Indonesia needs a lot of care. You should look around, ask at the Zoo and other animal related foundations like WWF and see if there are any programmes or volunteering opportunities about. Single and most definitely not lonely. I didn’t even have to think about that one! Would you say you’re a bona fide bachelor? Yes I would. I’m too independent, too selfish and way too impatient to be in a relationship. Would you say those are unattractive traits to have? Not at all. I know what I am and that’s the way I like it. At least this way women know what they’re getting from the get go and they don’t expect anything from me. Fair enough, so what do you do for work in Jakarta? I’m country manager for a security/risk company. Is that as exciting as it sounds? Not really, but it affords me a very good lifestyle which is what matters. What do you love most about being single? The best thing about being single is that I can do what I want, when I want to do it. Why would I have it any other way? The idea of having your Mrs call you up while you’re in the pub with your mates telling you to come home and wash the dishes is not one I had in mind. What’s the most fun a single guy can have in Jakarta on a Saturday night? I’d say start with a massage, then have dinner at Loewy in Kuningan, then mayhem at Red Square and see where that takes you. What type of a woman would it take to make you want to settle down? A super hot, confident and sexy woman with a willing twin sister who would both be generously endowed in the chest department. What’s your craziest memory from living in Jakarta? Alexis Hotel - if you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’d say keep it that way and if you do know, well maybe you and I aren’t so different after all. No comment. What’s the most outlandish thing you’ve ever done to impress a lady? Actually I’ve never found the need to impress a lady in Jakarta - they’re always up for a good time. Matchmaker.com is on record as the oldest online dating service. The idea was to design a pen pal service that would run on donations by users to eliminate having to charge a set fee. Located in Houston, Matchmaker started on 4 dial-up lines and expanded to San Antonio, Texas, then San Jose, California shortly after. In 2008 it had an estimated 7 million users.

Systems like this dominated the 80s to mid 90s and supported connections through local telephone area codes allowing the news to be read, message exchanges as well as participation on message boards and bulletins. The course, entitled “Feminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyonce� is taught by Kevin Allred, a Ph.D student and lecturer in the school’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. The class uses Beyonce’s music, videos, and career to explore issues of American race, gender, and sexual politics.
