ABOUT ME Hello, my name is Jake Hayward. I am currently a 5th year achitecture student at Syracuse University. I am interested in the intersection of architecture and emergent technologies relating to sustainability. My projects throughout my education have revolved around imagining new possibilities for living and interacting with our environment. Growing up in Colorado, I have always had a love and appreciation for the great outdoors and extreme sports. From an early age, I have been exploring the woods behind my house, building tree forts, hunting for lizards, and building BMX jumps with my friends in the neighborhood. From these experiences, I have fostered an interest in designing recreation centers, new housing typologies, and projects that strengthen our relationship with our environment. In doing so, my aim is to create sustainable projects that help to protect biodiversity and our ecosystems for future generations to enjoy. In my education at Syracuse, I quickly understood the importance of taking a “design with” approach to architecture. Supporting community agency has been a critical part of my projects in school and I aim to build on those aspirations in my future career.

DO IT ALL. Project: VERTHAUS Program: Extreme sports and content creation facility Location: Downtown Syracuse, NY Partner on the project: Zack Samuel VertHaus is an extreme sports and content creation facility that offers opportunities for rock climbing, indoor skydiving, cliff-diving, and skateboarding. In doing so, the building addresses the lack of active activities for amateurs, professionals, and enthusiasts in the CNY area. On approach to our project, the presence of extreme sports activities populate the plaza. Climbing walls wrap parts of the exterior, skatepark elements extrude from the ground, and the diving pool acts as an aquarium wall. We wanted the public to be able to witness and interact with the extreme sports activities happening on both the interior and exterior of the building. Our massing derives from the necessity for three vertical spaces needed for rock climbing, cliff-diving, and indoor skydiving. The horizontal requirements needed for a skatepark informed the form to join in the center and extend onto the top level of the adjacent parking garage. This creates a centralized space for users of every activity to converge on the inside and out. Hence, extreme sports become the centerpiece of our towers, as other activities such as filming and spectating revolve around them. VertHaus seeks to create resort-style living units specifically adapted to cater to the needs of athletes and enthusiasts alike. Each pod is inspired by the extreme sport associated with it. The skateboarding pods, embedded within the mega ramp, offer a unique interaction between the skater who is riding over it and the resident inside. The cliff diving pods are located within the interior and exterior skin. Punchouts along the surface allow divers to jump from the platforms into the water below. The climbing pod, only reachable by climbing the rock wall, is a thrilling experience with enough space for sleeping bags and climbing equipment storage. The skydive tower casts space nets, a popular netting used by base jumpers, across its atrium. These revolve around the indoor skydive tube, allowing residents to lounge, sleep, or watch others while suspended high in the air. VertHaus seeks to provide an all-in-one experience centered around extreme sports and content creation. Whether you’re an experienced extreme athlete or an amateaur looking to try out these sports, Verthaus is “the’’ destination for you.

MASSING STRATEGY 3 VERTICLE CORES

The massing of the project emerged from the introdution of these four extreme sports with the aim at joining them in the center of the building for an intermingling of multiple programs. The tapered form of our building in plan and section helps distribute loads, as the three towers lean on one another.

STRUCTURAL STRATEGY CONNECTION DETAILS

Our structural strategy utilizes a timber post and beam system joined by steel connections.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY LOUVRE SHADING SYSTEM

In order to maintain occupant comfort in these large spaces a VAV active heating/cooling system is implemented. We’re supplying and returning the air through a raised floor beam air duct system which minimizes the visual obstructiveness of the space. A stack ventilation system acts as a passive heating and cooling strategy, as large atrium spaces are created by the extreme sports program. In the summer, the windows would open to allow cool air to enter the space and have hot air rise and exit at the top. While in the winter, these openings would be closed off, allowing solar radiation to warm the spaces. In doing so, the building performs to best accommodate athletes and enthusiasts as they experience the extreme nature of the space.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Project: Weaving Homes Program: Mixed-Use Affordable Housing Location: Mott Haven, Bronx Partners: Joao Pedro Ellery, Felipe Beccara The challenge for this project was to redevelop this former tow-pound site in Mott Haven, Bronx. It has been a severely underserved neighborhood and our project aims to provide the community with affordable housing and additional program and services to support the residents and offer professional development opportunities. This projet emphasizes resident agency by allowing for incremental expansion of apartments and material customization.

VAIL MOUNTA

AIN RETREAT

Project: Vail Mountain Retreat Program: Weekend retreat home Location: Vail Mountain Ski Resort, CO Partners: Solo project This project performs as the perfect get away cabin for people looking to recharge and relax. Its location perched atop a mountain stream and private lake affords its visitors open air and breathtaking views. With only a 5 min drive to the ski-lift, this cabin stands at the base of some of the best skiing in the world.

This project was designed in my freetime during the early lockdowns of 2020. I used this project as practice for learning more about twinmotion and its rendering capabilities.

This model illustrates the activated walkways, gathering spaces, and informal programs that might occur when public space is actively intregrated into apartments and public housing projects. Various activity zones occur throughout the project, inside and outside, and there is meant to be this interplay between the existing structure and the proposed one.
