About the Work

!

My sister is an English teacher at the Minnesota International Middle School in Minneapolis which provides a safe and inclusive environment for East African immigrant students to learn (many of whom are Somali). Most of these students came to the USA to escape the violent civil war that has plagued Somalia since 1991. Seeking a better life for their children, these students’ parents risked their lives to come to the USA - a valiant act of love. I wanted to tell their story through music and so I asked my sister to have her students write poems about their experiences leaving their home and coming to the USA. I received over 100 poems that contain passion, pride, emotion, and vivid stories of the sights and sounds that these young people have experienced. I sifted through these texts and found the powerful words of 14-year-old Warda Mohamed that became the backbone of the composition. Using Warda’s poem and two Somali proverbs, “We Can Mend the Sky” is a musical depiction of one’s journey as an immigrant and an affirmation of hope as we all embrace the diversity around us.

Award-winning composer Jake Runestad (b. 1986) is noted for his versatility and wide range of expressive capabilities with music driven by soaring melodies, driving rhythms, and lush textures.

Mr. Runestad has received numerous commissions and performances from ensembles and organizations such as the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Seraphic Fire, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, VocalEssence, Cantus, the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, the National Lutheran Choir, and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society.

Jake Runestad holds a Master’s degree in composition from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University where he studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. He has also studied extensively with acclaimed composer Libby Larsen. Mr. Runestad’s music is published by Boosey & Hawkes and JR Music.

We woke up to a terrible noise wondering what had happened

Looking out the window seeing people shooting at each other

My mom crying out “soo baxa” which means “let’s go”

! Fear crept into me not knowing what was going on ! We were running for a long while with no food or shelter ! After walking day and night for days without food, we found camps ! The told us we were going to America ! Coming to America had its own struggle too. ! Getting used to the cold, frigid air was hard ! Everyday I would cry with fear and sadness leaving my home ! It’s hard leaving your home but today I’m still an immigrant

My parents left Somalia so they could flee the war. Because everywhere people were hungry and poor. They came to America to escape poverty and tragedy. They did not come in a car, nor an airplane, they came on a boat where people complained about pain. People on the boat had broken bones and broken legs but worst of all, broken hearts. Leaving their children and their family wondering if they will ever seen them again. Most people died, I’m happy my parents survived.

That’s all she hears came from a place where they don’t care about looks color religion and now they do I’m judged by everything I walk around school feeling like an alien mistreated bullied out of place I don’t know what to do. I can’t change myself. The only thing I can do is be proud of who I am so I held my head high and said YES I AM AN IMMIGRANT

I left Somalia. It was very hard - just imagine leaving the beds unmade, the chairs in the ding room upturned, kitchen unswept, dishes in the sink, running barefoot not knowing where you will end up and not knowing what the future holds for you. Imagine not knowing the fate of what happened to your beloved family. Refugee camp was tough and a hard life in many ways. I had to live with five girls in one bedroom. I shared with them everything - clothing, food. Every time I needed water, food, or doctor, I had to wait in line for 2 to 3 hours because there were 500 people that want the same thing. I slept a lot because there was no school. It was a boring place. Sometimes I worried about my safety because there were a lot of crimes in the camp.

I was happy to leave the camp. My arrival at the airport was amazing. The diversity of people working together in harmony was incredible Black, white, Spanish, and Asian, in one craze. Coming to America has changed my life in many good ways. I get an education and am learning English.
