Forskningsparken

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Being part of Oslos „Science City“, one of Forskningsparkens initial ambitions was to bring students, researchers, entrepeneurs, people from the Industry and investors together, in order to foster the synergy between different branches of science and therefore strenghten Oslos significance as a scientific research location. As the status quo today shows, each of the establishments (OIC, IFI, University, Hospital, Life Science University) do indeed function quite well on their own, but there is just little interaction - socially and professionally - between all institutions, as well as with the surrounding residential areas. Create attractions for various usergroups to: - STRENGHTEN IDENTITY - ENABLE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - PROVIDE MEETING POINTS My design proposal aims to improve the overall amount of social interaction by creating points of attraction for various people, as well as giving the `Science City` a unique identity by setting landmarks along the most important viewing axes. The valuable green space south of the Ring Road is conveniently located between the National Hospital, The Forskningsparken and the Blindern Campus and provides a view over a vast meadow towards the Oslo Fjord. This green space will be the location of my proposed design. A variety of 10 different activities will attract different user groups. Each of the activities has one very present element of red light, which is used as the branding colour of the Forskningsparken already. They are connected by a spiralling footpath made of red Tartan-Material and located to the sides of the space, in order to not destroy the view axis towards the fjord, yet still being visible. Walls and roofs are all be greened to preserve the natural look of the green space, blending the elements into the landscape. By nighttime, each of the activity points is lit, so they function as light sculptures, which create a sense of identity. The main footpath will stay the same, but will be lit by blue lights, to create a contrast to the light sculptures to the sides and enhance the viewing axis that leads towards the ocean. The activities/attractions are as follows: 1. Panorama Rooms: In front of the University Hospital, North of the Ring Road, this building provides four panoramic meeting rooms and bathrooms and can be rented out by users of the Forskningsparken. If people who are not familiar with the area are invited to a meeting they can easily find this spot due to its proximity to the Ring Road 3, parking house and the visibility of the new installations. 2. Bus Stop: The renewed bus stop is now the northern entrance to the forskningsparken. Its shape follows the curve of the red path while at the same time it‘s the spawn of the blue path. It is slightly bigger than the old bust stop and provides both open and enclosed areas. 3. Kiosk: The kiosk is at the northern end of the green space, in between the T-Bane Stops Gaustad and Forskningsparken. A lot of commuters take this path on their way from or to the trainstations. It is central to all relevant institutions and the envisioned seating area provides a view down the park. 4. Relaxpods: These individual seating installations give comfortable seating located in the middle of the green area. Equipped with USB-plugs and power outlets and a roof protecting from direct sunlight, they enable the users to recharge and work on their mobile devices while being outside their usual office/study buidlings 5. Gapahuk: This seating area is an interpretation of the norwegian half open typology of gapahuks, which usually encircle a fireplace. A series of Barbecue grills provide the possibility of bigger outside events or as common lunch and meeting area. 6. Tabletennis: Following the shape of the red path a series of tabletennis tables are the beginning of a series of sporting activities. 7. Boulderwall: The boulderwall in combination with the soft Tartan pavement and a maximum height of 3 meters give a quick and safe opportunity for physical activity. 8. Playground: Along a playful red line that changes in height and diameter, a series of different swings and climbing nets are an activity more suited for children visiting the park. 9. Parkour: This Sport has, in recent years been growing in popularity and is catching public attention. A unique training ground for this activity can attract people following that hobby and can also introduce new fans to it. 10. Gate: The large gate is located near the southern entrance of the park, with enough distance to the adjoining residential neighbourhoods. Being the biggest and most visible eyecatcher in the landscape it can be seen even from far away. It can also be used as an suspension for a movie screen (10x6m) to organize openair cinema events. Events like these bring public attention and many new people to the park, therefore act as a catalyst for creating an identity for the Forskningsparken.
