TROJSKA SCHOOL Open, single phase, architectural competition for the reconstruction and extension of the primary and grammar school TrojskĂ
ANNOTATION OF THE DESIGN
The conceptual approach to the project embodies the idea of a school oriented to the future, such as a tool box, an open flexible structure. The principal strategies are based on the realization of simple yet expressive buildings that promote flexibility and sustainability, determining attractive outdoor spaces. Scale and materiality are thought to tie harmoniously into the urban context. Project description The two interventions find their connection in the balance of the green outdoor spaces, where all the entrances are. Materiality and colours are a central theme in the realization of both buildings, with similar attitude and different results, influenced by the urban and green context.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION School extension – plot 314/315

Main entrances from Trojska, secondary entrances and logistic accesses
Relationship with the geometries of the existing building and with the plot borders
Attractive outdoor spaces link the two interventions and promote interactions and gatherings.
The extension proposal envisions a new linear “wing” on the west side of the plot, determining a “U” shaped school complex with favourably oriented classrooms and functions. Both schools have a visible access on Trojska; the grammar school will use the existing entrance, while the primary school and the afterschool can use the new entrance situated under the porch of the extension. The new wing is also open on the north side to allow direct connections with the sport field and to give an additional possibility to the after school care to use an independent entrance. Barrier free access happens through a ramp placed between the two main entrances, where the landscape is designed to promote interaction and meeting. The gym keeps using its own entrance from the backyard, where the dislocation of the outdoor sport field takes advantage of the terrain levels to be surrounded by grades. The extension is conceived as a simple three floors rectangular building, with slabs positioned at the same height of the existing school, to ensure accessibility. The new wing is connected to the old structure through the north corridor of the 1951 extension, realizing a logical sequence of distribution spaces. Subtle variations in roof volumetry allow the classrooms and the hall of the second floor to gain natural light from both east and west. Most of the programme in the existing building remains in the same position as before, including the caretaker apartment. The ground floor will be dedicated to the grammar school, to the entrance of the primary school and to the after-
school section. Right in front of the entrance at the ground floor, the primary school pupils have a changing space, and services, close to the large staircase and to the elevator that lead to the second floor. All the first floor will be occupied by the grammar school, while the second floor will host all the functions of the primary school. All distribution spaces are designed to promote interaction, through generous connected halls/corridors, and openings towards the outside for natural light and views. The only relevant demolition taking place in the old school building is the existing stair, the one from the first to the second floor. It is demolished to open the space of the first and second floor corridor transforming it in an active functional space, equipped with built in cabinets. The school architectural expression is inspired by the vibrant activities that happen inside, choosing an elegant discreet language featured by exposed construction elements, proportioning the facades on its interior spaces. New building – plot 294/1 The conceptual approach to this building aims to the realization of an open flexible structure that is easily adaptable to didactical and to civic functions. The area is accessible for pedestrians from the northwest corner, the closest one to the existing school. One vehicle entrance is arranged to the opposite side, close to the kitchen, to serve the building’s logistics.
New building
A green sequence of paved and green areas stretches all the way until the south edge of the plot, leading to the entrances of the cafeteria and of the central foyer. These spaces are well oriented, surrounded by green and equipped with a covered area, a cultivation garden, a miniamphitheatre and benches. The building’s geometry reacts to the plot shape. Rather than a singular large building, we envision three volumes of different size and different heights, integrating it in the scale of the surroundings and reflecting its public attitude. The central foyer becomes the determining element in the spatial composition, it acts as a connector between the main hall, the cafeteria, and the first floor, where the classrooms and services are. The ecology classroom can therefore use the green terrace on top of the cafeteria for its cultivation activities. The alignment of the main hall, the foyer and the cafeteria allows the three spaces to be connected through swinging doors or used independently. All public areas of the ground floor give direct access to the outdoors, promoting lively interactions between interior and exterior spaces. Structure, technology, operational efficiency To optimize the use of the avaiable economic resources, the proposal provides a little amount of structural interventions, a compact volumetry, prefabricated structures and facades, and a good ratio of floor areas/building envelope. In the extension, s structural grid of 4,5mtx4,5mt orders the classrooms volumes and most of its geometries.
The extensions’ structural footprint does not interfere with the existing building, it minimizes the connection to what is strictly necessary, simplifying foundation works. On the new building a parallel pattern of structural concrete pillars is visible from outside and inside, structuring the whole building. The pigmentated red concrete used for all precast structures is inspired by the tones used in the existing school details and neighboring houses. Inside of both the interventions the structural logics remain visible, becoming part of the aesthetics of the new building. Interiors will be featured by raw materials, chosen from a restricted palette; concrete, pigmented concrete, plywood and painted steel. The use of a low profile esthetic with special care to the instrinsec quality of the spaces can be a right choice, so that technical installations and eco friendly solutions can gain a larger share of the building budget, resulting in long term sustainability. Energy saving strategies will be mainly oriented towards passive measures: reducing the heat losses with high insulations; realizing green flat roofs; using windows with a good U-value; using good low-emitting materials to improve indoor air quality; provide the spaces with good interior ceiling heights to allow the heat to rise up over the occupied zones to prevent overheating. Balanced ventilation will only be used where airflows need to be controlled. Lighting fixtures will be con-trolled so that they adapt naturally to occupation and to daylight patterns. This will result in reduced power consumption, giving a pleasing effect for a teaching environment.
