WELCOME TO I

am honored to reveal the latest edition of Keller Williams Luxury International’s affluent lifestyle magazine. We’re so proud to be the boutique of the largest real estate company in the world. The numbers speak for themselves — our agents close almost $1 billion in transactions every day. But beyond their exceptional business performance, our professionals are also committed to serving others at the highest level. A dedication to a higher calling is at the core of Keller Williams, with philanthropy at the heart of our agents’ lives. It’s why we make the spirit of giving a part of each issue. On page 10, you’ll find Why We Give, an in-depth look at the psychology behind selflessness. The first article you encounter, Walking the Walk on page 6, is a perfect example of how our agents are at the forefront of today’s real estate trends. Amid increasing homeowner interest in downtowns and being within walking distance of everything, we talk with Keller Williams specialists in six markets throughout the country where proximity is paramount. As you stroll through the rest of the magazine, you’ll find an informative look at Art Deco architecture, a fascinating feature on traveling luxuriously to our national parks, and a wonderful article on how to create gardens that are therapeutic and restorative. And that’s just the first half of our content! Meanwhile, buying a new home is also something that can be therapeutic and restorative. And this issue’s largest-ever collection of high-end properties gives us all something to feel good about. Sincerely,

Lesli Akers President, KW Luxury International

alkable “scores” have been shooting up on priority lists for buyers around the United States, and the explanation is a growing number of reasons that range from the environment and wellness to tourist rates and property values. Cities with a higher walk score, (ratings range from 0 to 100), have been known to hold a greater sense of community, increased tourism, and even stronger economies. Popular cities such as Boston and New York may have long dominated top city lists, but components such as green space, traffic, and opportunities to meet and mingle are largely coming into play for these destinations. “Walking in the city allows me to feel connected to the history and its residents,” says Chris Suarez, broker/owner of PDX Property Group, Keller Williams Realty in Portland,

Oregon. With a walk score of 97, Portland has been deemed a walker’s paradise. Determined by the number of errands, jobs, and stores/ restaurants that are accessible by foot, a city’s walk score can attract buyers from all over. Kendra Todd, managing broker at The Kendra Todd Group, Keller Williams Greater Seattle, explains that a walkable city, “is one where you have almost immediate access to a variety of resources and services that satisfies whatever your lifestyle requirements are.” Heather Murphy, an associate broker at The Heather Murphy Group of Keller Williams Realty Coastal Area Partners, agrees when it comes to Savannah, Georgia. “Walking around a city will change your experience of that city by enhancing your sense of place and providing you with a better perspective of what makes

the city unique.” There is an increased community sense when you are out on the streets interacting with locals and tourists, which is difficult to experience or facilitate in a car. Walking, rather than driving around a city also decreases traffic, takes the strain off of public transportation and promotes healthier lifestyles that go hand-in-hand with frequent walking. Local businesses also feel the appeal of possible customers passing right by their front doors. Customers are more inclined to wander in and try new places, such as restaurants and shops if they are easily accessible on their route home or in the path of work or other errands. The importance of being out in a city to truly experience it is recognized throughout cities all over the country. “You have to walk to smell the red beans cooking and hear the tinkling of a piano and get caught up in a second line parade. You can’t get that on a bus,” says Samara D. Poche, a broker for Keller Williams Realty New Orleans. Wandering into restaurants because you

smell the food or getting to know the locals that you pass by every day are just part of the reason why walkable cities are increasing in popularity. Cynthia Froid, a Realtor at Keller Williams Realty, who calls Minneapolis home, says, “The perspective is completely different when walking or biking around a city. You’re meeting people in front of you, smiling, looking them in the eye. All on its own, that is a whole different experience.”

Portland, Oregon “I kept running into great people and forming connections with people from the state of Oregon,” says Suarez, who moved to Portland just two months after September 11, 2001. Years of traveling has proven that “Portland is one of the most “neighborhoody” cities I have been to,” says Suarez. This funky city — with a vibrant Chinatown, a plethora of restaurants, and a music and art scene to compete with — has over 5,000 acres of forested parks and trails creating a connection to nature that is sustainable and accessible, even for those without a vehicle.

Forsyth Park’s most famous asset, the Forsyth Fountain, is modeled after the fountains found in Place de la Concorde in Cuzco, Peru. 7

NEW ORLEANS

Portland has come a long way from the pollution and urban decay that began to take hold in the 50s and 60s. Since then, the city has become an example of smart planning and sustainable growth. “Many people end up in Portland to be more connected to a healthier lifestyle and the outdoors,” says Suarez. Portland’s walkable score is another testament to the city’s dedication to creating a healthier space with happier people. “People here can get back to simpler living while being surrounded by various cultures, ways to think, and interesting people to meet,” notes Suarez.

SANTA FE

Savannah’s history and Southern charm bring tourists and locals out of their homes and onto the lively streets to explore and relish in the city’s one-of-a-kind character. “Walking through a city fosters interaction, making the design and features become more vibrant and attractive because they are accessible,” according to Murphy, a native of Savannah, who has been working in real estate in the area since 2006. Founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe, Savannah’s stories and legends fill the streets drawing in those who are lucky enough to experience the many squares. “The downtown historic district of Savannah offers a walkable environment for locals and visitors alike,” says Murphy. “The squares are shaded by live oak trees, showcase historical fountains and monuments, and are surrounded with charming historic homes, churches and inns.”

For Poche, who grew up in the suburbs of New Orleans, moving to the city was a given. “From the time I can remember walking through the French Quarter with my first-grade class … I knew I had to be part of that energy.” The city, located alongside the Mississippi River, is known for its lively culture, Mardi Gras and Jazz, but just the experience of walking down the street is enough to make you want to stay. “Unlike any other city in the U.S., New Orleans can be described as a mix between a European village and a Caribbean nation,” says Poche. “There’s a feeling in the city that is difficult to describe,” which is unsurprising considering the many cultures spread across the micro-neighborhoods, each one more animated than the next. “We are old, we are quirky, we are loud and fun,” boasts Poche. “It is unique in every sense.”

Santa Fe, New Mexico “Pure magic,” are the words Liz Sheffield uses to describe her city. An associate broker for Keller Williams International — Santa Fe, New Mexico, Sheffield grew up vacationing in Colorado and fell in love with the lifestyle, clean

air and the backdrop of mountainous beauty. Connecting with the outdoors or tapping into your creative side is a given when visiting Santa Fe. Sheffield notes, “The many world-class art galleries and restaurants that are packed into

“You won’t find a better latte anywhere in the U.S,” prompts Todd, who for 10 years has lived and worked in Seattle, home to the first Starbucks. If the coffee isn’t enough to entice visitors to stop by, Seattle is also donned in natural beauty and vibrant culture, including museums, live music, and art, which is best experienced by foot. “Walking enhances your appreciation for everything your city has to offer,” says Todd. The outdoors — Discovery Park is 600 acres perched on a bluff with amazing views, a driftwood beach, and historic lighthouse — endless restaurants, live music, and museums are all easily accessible by walking or biking. “What makes the city truly special is that it’s very neighborhoodcentric. Most neighborhoods have their own village or downtown area that gives Seattle great walkability,” says Todd. “I would describe Seattle as the most pioneering, creative, picturesque city in America.”

this small town is truly unique and amazing.” According to The City of Santa Fe website, “in 2005, Santa Fe became the first U.S. city to be chosen by UNESCO as a Creative City.” The essence of the city is only enhanced when wandering the eclectic streets on foot. “Walking allows you to see the features of a city up close and personal and Santa Fe has lots of interest in its historic architecture that invites the eye,” urges Sheffield.

Minneapolis, often overlooked, is the largest city in Minnesota with Lake Superior, the Falls of Saint Anthony, lively music and art scene, and much more to offer. “I’ve traveled extensively throughout Europe and other places around the world and I always come back to Minneapolis,” says Froid. Everything from the safe sidewalks, to the restaurants with outdoor seating, entices those passing by. “All of that creates a very friendly community. You’re out there seeing people enjoying meals and talking and even the food they’re eating,” adds Froid. “All of that makes up a walkable city, like Minneapolis.” Nature is seamlessly interwoven throughout the city, an important component for walkable cities. “I think the connection to nature is why people move here,” says Froid, explaining that she can be downtown or walking her dog through a forest in a matter of ten minutes. “There’s tons of nature that’s easily

accessible. It’s not uncommon to see bald eagles flying downtown along the Mississippi River.” Throughout Minnesota, known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, visitors can’t help but notice the shoreline that is also a part of

the city, which isn’t lost on the locals. “The shoreline is one of my favorite things, and there’s a lot of it because of all of our lakes. Some people joke that we have more shoreline than California,” says Froid. 9

ou may find yourself leaning towards the “donate now” button or picking up a few extra canned goods for your local food drive and wonder what is it exactly that compels us to help others, even in times of hardship? The desire to give back is deeply rooted in our instincts and has become a continuous component of our traditions, and for some, a part of their everyday lives. Those who volunteer their time and resources — whether it’s a family that participates in an annual Breast Cancer Walk or a student who spends the weekend walking dogs at a local shelter — agree that there are endless reasons to give back. When asked what project or efforts stood out in his mind over the past year, Brad Kieserman, vice president of operations and logistics at The American Red Cross, remarked that there were just too many from which to choose. “We’re living in a time, this year in particular, where Americans have been faced with a historic number of disasters, so many that some

major ones were dwarfed in the media,” explains Kieserman, who notes that The American Red Cross steps in to help with everything from house fires to psychological first aid, especially in these areas that are experiencing reoccurring loss. In a world of technology, disasters around the world are brought right to the palms of our hands. We are getting a glimpse into the many hardships around the world, which has sparked an increased interest in giving back. In 2018, Americans made over $427 billion in charitable donations and 70 percent of that came from individuals. Thirty percent of the adult population in America volunteer their time to make a difference, according to Charitable Giving Statistics by National Philanthropic Trust. Whether it be donating blood, organizing a clothing drive, or writing a check, giving back creates a sense of community, strengthens our ability to empathize, and triggers the emotional portion of the brain to give us a sense of purpose outside of ourselves. Kitty Block, the CEO/president of The Humane Society in the United States and the

CEO of The Humane Society International, explains that giving back “helps shape who we are and how we view ourselves, and how we view the world. We are all busy, but there is a part of the soul that needs to be fed. It’s really about yourself and what you can bring to the table.” Most people volunteer their time or donate their resources due to the warm glow effect or the emotional reward of giving to others. This is the personal satisfaction of having “done the right thing.” But the desire to help goes far beyond surface feelings. Jonathan Reckford, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, notes that “giving back is a terrific source of instant gratification. When people volunteer with an organization that they are passionate about, they get the opportunity to help change someone’s life.” Kieserman similarly says, “People wake up and they realize that they want to do something meaningful. They look back on their lives and they want to do something that they’re passionate about.” Passion is what spurs action during times of reoccurring loss and a record number of disasters. 11

pure altruism results in action. “The best kind of donor is an educated donor. Figure out what moves you. We’re not all moved by the same things,” notes Block, who jokes that animal protection is in her blood. She was raised by a mother who believed that it wasn’t just enough to love animals, but that you have to get off the sidelines and do something. With a record number of disasters in the past few years, the need for volunteers has continued to grow. The Humane Society, The American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity International and countless other organizations, large and small, rely on the generosity of volunteers and donors to give back. “To me, giving back is recognizing that each of us, at one point, depends on each other. No one got where they are by themselves. No one is successful alone and no one should fail alone. Giving back is fundamentally recognizing that there’s very little that we do by ourselves,” says Kieserman.

PHOTO COURTESY OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Block explains that when people learn about an issue, she has seen them respond in one of two ways, “They either turn away or it wakes them up. When people start asking themselves, ‘what can I do?’ and ‘what impact can I have?’ that is when they take action. Kieserman adds, “There’s no special skill to help. Not all heroes wear capes.” Giving back is made up of small components that come together to create profound success. Block simplifies by adding, “You don’t have to think, am I going to change the world? Small actions can change everyday behaviors, and that’s what is so important.” “Pay attention to the things that gnaw at you. Those are the things that will move you to take action,” urges Reckford. Volunteering can be a way to gain professional experience, it can bulk up your resume or increase your social status, but when a volunteer or donor truly understands an issue, when they research and educate themselves about a problem that gnaws at them, that is when

estled on the mountain of Keystone Resort in Summit County, Colorado, Dercum’s Dash is a community of single-family homes that provides an idyllic location for true mountain living in the Rocky Mountains. “Keystone has something for everyone, at every age,” says Kellie Bernstein, Dercum’s Dash’s project designer and client liaison. Rated USA Today’s No. 1 family ski resort, Keystone Resort is one of the largest ski resorts in Summit County and is spread across three peaks — Dercum’s Mountain, North Peak and the Outback. The resort boasts over 3,000 skiable acres where beginners and advanced skiers alike can experience all the seven-mile terrain has to offer. Founded by champion and U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame skier Max Dercum, his wife Edna and Bill Bergman in 1970, Keystone Resort began as a place where families and friends can enjoy sliding down “a snowy mountain on a pair of skis,” exactly how Dercum felt when he skied. Not only for avid skiers, Keystone offers activities and amenities for people to visit or reside all year round, making it a premier destination in Colorado. During the off-season, visitors and residents can bike, play tennis, hike

and fish. Another bonus of the resort is its location. Along with it being in close proximity to the state’s capital, Denver, Keystone is less than five miles away from Arapahoe Basin or A-Basin, the first ski area co-founded by Dercum. According to Bernstein, this extends the skiing season well into June. The resort is also close to another well-known ski area, Breckenridge, “so when you feel like being in the crowds, it’s easy to go skiing there for a day,” and go home to your quiet and cozy gem in Dercum’s Dash, Kellie Bernstein explains. Offering 24 residences, Dercum’s Dash is a mountainside community that sits alongside White River Run National Forest, with each home featuring stunning architecture and design, led by Crestwood Construction and Kellie’s husband, David Bernstein. “Each home’s unique details work in harmony to achieve the feeling of a well-thought-out community,” he says. “The homes are distinct and different, but blend aesthetically while situated to capture breathtaking views.” Each home includes a signature heated “Colorado Room” with a gas

fireplace. Interior amenities include two-sided, two-story stone fireplaces, painted or stained wood ceilings, stone floors, and custom-made cabinetry, to name a few. Dercum’s Dash is the only single-family subdivision in the area offering ski-in/ski-out, according to David Bernstein. Residents can reach the Summit Express chair lift, River Run and Gondola by a path that can be accessed directly from the subdivision. Add in the year-round activities, and it becomes clear that the opportunities at Keystone Resort and Dercum’s Dash are, as Kellie Bernstein says, “exclusive, special and once-in-a-lifetime.” 13

American Deco By Roger Grody

Enthusiasts of Art Deco, the glamorous precursor to modernism, can find many of the era’s greatest masterpieces surprisingly close to home.

orn in the Roaring Twenties, but enduring nearly a century later with no signs of diminished popularity, Art Deco combines modernity, artistry and glamour. Although it originated in France, the streetscapes of American cities are filled with extraordinary examples of Art Deco buildings that continue to inspire new generations of architects. The era of Art Deco was introduced at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts), a world’s fair held in Paris in 1925. Although the actual term Art Deco did not come into widespread use until the 1960s, the modern yet ornamental style spread like wildfire throughout the first half

of the century, and its aesthetics transcended architecture to influence furniture design, graphic arts and fashion. In the U.S., New York City boasts some of the most monumental examples of Art Deco architecture. Skyscrapers built in this style include the Empire State Building, but a more glorious example — one whose prominent arched metallic crown exemplifies Art Deco’s more flamboyant qualities — is the Chrysler Building, completed in 1930. Other superb examples in the Big Apple are Rockefeller Center, the gilded American Radiator Building (now Bryant Park Hotel) and Brooklyn Public Library. Evidence that Art Deco made its way out West, decades before the Dodgers left Brooklyn, is a surprisingly rich collection of structures in Los Angeles. Among L.A.’s most prominent examples of Art Deco architecture are the former Bullocks Wilshire department store, the turquoise terra cotta-clad Eastern Columbia Building and Los Angeles Central Library. Adrian Scott Fine, director of advocacy for the Los Angeles Conservancy, a prominent preservation organization, reports the movement

coincided with one of the fastest-growing periods in the city’s history. He also notes a strong Hollywood connection, citing its influence on set design in Depression-era movies starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. “Hollywood delivered Art Deco to the masses with glitzy, beautiful and thoroughly modern interior spaces at a time when people needed some uplifting images,” says Fine. L.A. also offers excellent examples of Streamline Moderne, a more curvilinear subset of Art Deco that was embraced by Angeleno architects in the 1930s. A variety of wellpreserved theaters, hotels and restaurants represent Moderne’s more aerodynamic aesthetic, which Fine suggests was particularly well-suited to the emerging car culture in L.A. Emphasizing Art Deco’s timeless quality, Fine states, “It was the first architecture that felt playful and fresh. Nothing before and nothing since looks quite like it.” Art Deco masterpieces exist throughout America, in cities large and small. Tulsa, Oklahoma is an unexpected Art Deco wonderland, offering a vast inventory of commercial and residential buildings. Shane Hood of W Design, current member and former president of the Tulsa Foundation for Architecture board of trustees, reports, “People are surprised to find such an intact collection of Art Deco in a place some perceive as in the middle of nowhere.” He explains an influx of cash-flush investors

illustrates how the style migrated upstate from the Big Apple. Buffalo City Hall, one of the tallest municipal buildings in the nation, is replete with colorful, opulent Art Deco elements. Detroit is an underrated center for Art Deco in America, insists Rebecca Binno Savage of Kraemer Design Group, an architectural firm specializing in historic restoration. An architectural historian and author of the book Art Deco in Detroit, Savage also serves as vice president of the Detroit Area Art Deco Society. “Detroit’s best buildings are Art Deco,” she reports, ranking her hometown among the best in the nation for this architecture. “Art Deco looked forward instead of referring back to styles like Gothic or Romanesque,” says Savage of its appeal, adding, “It was the design style chosen to make a statement of modernity.” Sometimes referred to as “Detroit’s largest art object” is the Fisher Building designed by Albert Kahn, the Motor City’s legendary architect. The 444-foot-tall building has a distinctive spire and is clad in 40 different marbles, brass and bronze, while the building’s soaring lobby — it features ornate, hand-painted barreled ceilings — is equally extravagant. With its dramatic splashes of color, Savage suggests the Guardian Building is another stunning example of Art Deco in Detroit. In the Midwest, Chicago’s strong Art Deco tradition is represented by the Carbide & Carbon Building, designed by Burnham Brothers and identified by its 24-karat gold leaf spire. The Chicago Board of Trade and the Palmolive Building are other prominent examples of the style that appears not only downtown but in neighborhoods across the Windy City. Even some contemporary construction reflects Art Deco sensibilities, such as the Ritz-Carlton Residences, a Magnificent Mile high-rise completed in 2012. Outstanding collections of Deco structures were built, and remain well preserved, throughout the Great Plains region, confirming that the fanciful Parisian style had widespread appeal in America’s Heartland. Art Deco’s popularity for iconic institutions, including many train stations, is represented by Omaha’s Union Station whose interior is particularly grandiose. Art Deco left its imprint on Kansas City, where the 1931 Kansas City Power & Light Building is a major landmark, further evidence the style was a favorite among utilities, railroads and other companies whose branding needed to convey a modern future. The 34-story skyscraper, crowned with an ornamental lantern,

arriving from the East Coast during the city’s oil boom was responsible for Tulsa’s explosion of Art Deco projects. “They emulated what they had back East and built monuments to themselves in what was the hot style of the time,” says Hood, who notes some local architects incorporated Native American themes to create a uniquely Tulsa brand of Deco. The Tulsa Art Deco Museum is located in the lobby of the Philcade Building, a landmark whose stunning gilded ceiling reflects the Native American influences cited by Hood. Tulsa

celebrates Art Deco not only through preservation but occasionally in newer construction. The Tulsa City Bus Terminal (circa 1998) provides a beautiful homage to Streamline Moderne design, although most preservationists object to this trend of “echo Deco” that lacks historical integrity. Amanda DeCort, executive director of the Tulsa Foundation for Architecture, suggests the city should focus on its impressive collection of buildings true to the era. “Our Art Deco architecture is a source of community pride and in the last 10 years there’s been a huge resurgence of interest in the style and our historical heritage in general,” she reports. The largest concentration of Art Deco structures is the Miami Beach Architectural District (“Deco District”), where nearly 900 buildings have been lovingly preserved. The city’s sunnier brand of Art Deco — it is characterized by a vibrant color palette, artistic neon and a more intimate scale — includes chic hotels, trendy restaurants and boutiques. The Carlyle Hotel, a superb example of Art Deco in Miami Beach, was featured in the iconic television show Miami Vice as well as movies like The Birdcage and Scarface. “The style in Miami Beach is known as ‘Tropical Art Deco’ because of our unique environment,” explains Martin Jean, director of tours at the Miami Design Preservation League. “There’s a lot of architectural eye candy in one short sweep in Miami Beach,” insists Jean, who believes a sense of nostalgia is fueling increased interest in Art Deco. Noting a strong prevalence of Streamline Moderne, Jean states, “Being a seaside community, you can see the influence of ships and tugboats, as well as trains, planes and automobiles if you use a bit of imagination.” In contrast to some other cities’ Art Deco architecture, Miami Beach’s buildings were originally small, economically built structures which Jean suggests incorporated tricks of the eye or ornamentation to make them look more elegant. He reports most buildings were originally painted white, in vogue in the 1920s and 1930s, and that the explosion of colors seen today arrived much later. Ironically, some landmarks undergoing renovation are now being repainted white, which is once again fashionable. Remarkably, almost a century after its introduction in Paris, Art Deco still captures our imagination, even where we least expect it. Tulsa architect Shane Hood conveys a common refrain expressed by Art Deco enthusiasts: “Why can’t we build like this anymore?” 51

Luxury in the Wild Appreciating America’s portfolio of national parks typically involves hiking, rafting and horseback riding, but it needn’t preclude luxury. By Roger Grody

A

merica’s national park system — 61 different environments of incredible beauty and diversity — is one of the nation’s greatest legacies for future generations. To fully experience these spectacular places, one should be willing to rough it a bit, setting out on hiking or riding trails into pristine wilderness. But there are accommodations near these parks, occasionally even inside their gates, that offer world-class luxury. Just 15 miles from Yosemite National Park is Château du Sureau, a luxury boutique hotel with the prestigious Relais & Châteaux affiliation. Its 10 one-of-a-kind guestrooms are sumptuously appointed with rare antiques, original art and high-end finishes, some warmed by fireplaces. Offering the ultimate decadence is Villa Sureau, a 2,000-square-foot, 19th century, Parisian-inspired manor with 20-foot ceilings, a pair of bedrooms

with marble-clad baths, and terrace providing splendid views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Available at $3,000 per night — typically favored by affluent families or Fortune 500 CEOs — the Villa has its own private entrance and dedicated butler service. With a koi pond, life-size chess set and lavender gardens, the grounds at Château du Sureau are magical, while an onsite spa offers luxurious serenity. The property’s Elderberry House Restaurant features ornate chandeliers, crisp white-linen-clad tables and sophisticated market-driven cuisine. A daily-changing sevencourse menu might include carrot-ginger bisque, duck with burgundy-truffle risotto or charred bison ribeye, all complemented by an impressive wine list. Jonathan Rosenson, Château du Sureau’s chief operating officer, reports, “This is an

enchanting property — it’s like a castle nestled in the woods with a fairy-tale feel — and offers a peacefulness and tranquility that makes stress melt away.” Referring to the hotel’s meticulous and highly personalized service, he adds, “The staff makes sure everything about your stay is perfect.” When it comes to sleeping within a national park, most options are pretty rustic, but The Ahwahnee, a hotel deep inside Yosemite, is a conspicuous exception. This historic stone-andtimber property — several U.S. Presidents and Queen Elizabeth II have stayed here — features Arts & Crafts architecture and a soaring dining room where floor-to-ceiling windows frame Mother Nature’s greatest artistry. Guestrooms incorporate Native American-inspired design and more luxury than one would expect in the wilderness.

Beloved by gastronomes and outdoor enthusiasts insisting on a bit of rustic glamour is Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm, a 4,200-acre estate nestled in the foothills bordering Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Chefs at the property’s restaurants take full advantage of an expansive working farm on the premises and forage for wild berries and mushrooms in 5,000 adjoining acres of wilderness preserve. Brian Lee, Blackberry Farm’s general manager, reports, “The property offers a balanced lifestyle where you can enjoy luxury amenities and pampering. The Amangani Jackson Hole, whose contemporary lodge architecture complements the rugged landscape, is a boutique resort popular with hedge fund managers and energy company CEOs. The property’s opulent suites offer fireplaces, balconies and a refined interior design that is distinctively Western yet worthy of any cosmopolitan hotel. An increasingly popular option for nature lovers who insist on the good life is the luxury dude ranch. The Relais & Châteaux-affiliated Ranch at Rock Creek in Philipsburg, Montana, is close to Yellowstone but loaded with the kinds of amenities typically reserved for world-class hotels. The current management strives to maintain the authenticity of the site, whose rich history includes silver and sapphire mining as well as ranching.

rowing in prominence in recent years, therapeutic gardens are being built with increasing frequency as the awareness about their value has transcended across many industries, including healthcare and landscape design. Professionals in these various fields have come to know the significant change these projects can bring, and work in different ways to sow this knowledge in order for others to reap the benefits. By definition, a therapeutic garden is categorized under the restorative type of garden, as it focuses on therapeutic intervention that is “designed for use as a component of a treatment program and may exist on its own, as an indoor program or part of a larger healing garden,” according to a report published in the AHTA News Magazine. Elizabeth “Leah” Diehl, the author of that report, is director of the Therapeutic Horticulture Program at Wilmot Botanical Gardens at the University of Florida, as well as a licensed landscape architect, master gardener and registered horticultural therapist. She, in particular, works everyday with patients

According to Julie Moir Messervy, a stopping place at the end of “Stroll Journey,” such as a quiet sitting area on a walking path, is the perfect place to create what she calls a special “Mind Journey.”

To remain inclusive, therapeutic gardens are “frequently simple, unified and easily comprehended places.”

Garden elements, features and equipment are all selected to provide accessible places, activities and experiences to the greatest extent possible, from raised flowerbeds to detailed signs.

Therapeutic gardens commonly stimulate the full range of senses, including memory, hearing, touch, smell and sometimes taste.

to understand the multitude of benefits that are possible from therapeutic gardening programs and the good it can do on every scale. The basis of this type of healing comes from combining active experiences and passive experiences within a therapeutic garden, Diehl notes. The active experiences include tasks that involve physical movement or stimulation, while passive experiences can simply be the time spent just sitting under a tree surrounded by

nature, enjoying the plants and wildlife around you. These gardens tend to reflect the needs of the individual or the group, depending on their specific needs, while including specific plants that peak their interests. She says, for example, a patient with movement trouble would benefit from therapy that involves tuning their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination — to do so, she would have them work on such tasks as taking cuttings, planting seeds, whichever

activity that is appropriate for that physical component. And while helping improve the ailments of individual patients, the larger effect these programs have are even more rewarding. “We’re working to create a community,” Diehl says. “A lot of the people we work with have been isolated because of their disorder or disability, so through gardening we’re giving them an opportunity to become part of a community and to realize that the work they’re doing in this community is meaningful and valued.” Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio (JMMDS) is headed by founder and principal Julie Moir Messervy, who has made it her mission to create and inspire others to create exquisite and environmentally sensitive places of beauty and meaning. While not technically deemed therapeutic gardens, her contemplative landscape designs are meant to “help people find healing, pleasure and joy through their thoughtful layout, plantings, and details,” Messervy says. This interpretation and execution results in a specific technique of landscape design unique to JMMDS. In Contemplative Gardens, Messervy describes the elements of “Stroll Journeys” and “Mind Journeys” that she tries to choreograph in her landscapes within her firm. “A Stroll Journey is composed of 3 simple elements,” Messervy explains, “a departure point, a destination point (an interesting path that links the two), and pausing places along the way that pique your interest and promote thought. When you come to a pausing or stopping place on your Stroll Journey, that’s where you can create a special Mind Journey.” Physical ways of implementing these concepts are through benches to provide a comfortable viewing position, large garden features that offer a fascinating focal point, and a frame that surrounds it. “For me, you first need to get a landscape’s layout right. Then you can fill out the details with appropriate plantings and sustainable materials,” Messervy says. The results are spaces that function well for clients with an overwhelming feeling of being “just right.” And for Messervy and her team, feeling comes first. “The architect Louis Sullivan famously said that ‘form follows function.’ At JMMDS, we think differently: we believe that ‘form follows feeling (first),’” she states. No matter the exact layout or methods, paying attention and crafting fine details, as Messervy notes, is vital to making a garden that heals. 57

bottle of wine is like a piece of fine art — and it needs to be preserved and taken care of just as carefully. To ensure that each bottle of wine, whether it’s a smooth red or crisp white, is kept properly, wine lovers are turning to companies around the globe who specialize in designing and installing eye-catching custom wine cellars in their homes. Vigilant, Inc., in Dover, New Hampshire, prides itself on blending the “finest materials with quality craftsmanship to produce lasting products for the enjoyment of our customers,” according to the company’s website. Lisa Pinault, director of sales and marketing, adds, “Quality is critical, given the bottles they will be storing and protecting are an expensive investment.” Named after the Baltimore Clipper Schooner Vigilant, the company creates designs primarily with pine and mahogany, and range from traditional to contemporary style. “We use the mahogany because of its ability to stand up over time in the cool, moist wine cellar environment. It is also a strong wood that

We also work in a number of custom wood species, including cherry, walnut and alder.” Pinault notes some of the most popular non-traditional cellars are, “the modern, all-glass and two-tone finish looks,” and that their designs are made to “meet the aesthetic, functional and budgetary goals of our client.” Curtis “Curt” Dahl, co-owner of Joseph & Curtis Custom Wine Cellars in New Jersey says the company utilizes a variety of materials to create its elegant wine cellars. “The materials used can be wood, metals, acrylics, glass and many others, depending on design and, of course, budget,” says Dahl. “Metal and wood are the most common materials used.” Started over a glass of wine at dinner, the two former Wall Street traders took their love of fine wine and design and turned it into a business. the wine is what’s going to stick out.” Rosen, who has been in business for 25 years, constructs mainly traditional cellars and uses his knowledge of fine wines to produce exquisite cellars, some that can hold up to 1,200 bottles. “When you have a bottle of champagne or a great Cabernet and you drink it the day you buy it, you’re not getting your money’s worth, and part of the reason is because the wine is going to be drinking best in 10 or 20 years down the road,” says Rosen. He goes on to say, “We try to design the space so that aesthetically, it looks great and then functionally, it provides the storage that people are looking for.”

“We did a two-story wine room in Long Island, (New York), where the cellar on the main floor had a glass floor so you could see the basement cellar,” explains Daul. “The upper was modern and the downstairs was Tuscan. It had a spiral staircase in the cellars connecting the two, and it was featured in The Wall Street Journal.” Although the design of a cellar proves to be an important part in creating an exclusive masterpiece, the process through which the layout goes from paper to cellar is key. “Obviously, I am biased, but I can honestly tell you that Joe and I are involved in every cellar we build. We are driven by two things. One is design, and the other is making each and every customer a fan for life.” To guarantee that clients are able to understand what their custom cellar will look like, Genuwine Cellars in Winnipeg, Canada, utilizes technology to assist in the design process. “It’s sometimes hard to visualize if you know you’re talking about a concept or about sketches, so we put together the 3D [image] so everybody has something to bite into,” says Brooklyn Hurst, Genuwine Cellars’ chief operating officer. Hurst describes the company as “a unique unicorn” and has grown to be one of the leading wine cellar companies in the world. He notes that contemporary designs have become popular amongst wine enthusiasts looking to showcase their collection in an exciting way, as wine walls and glass enclosures are particularly desired. At the higher end, Hurst describes how people are building two different wine cellars in their homes. “They’re splitting up the cellars. So you’d have in a big home a white wine cellar that’s separate from [your] red wines.” Hurst points out that beyond the look of the cellar, there is an everlasting aspect to one, as well. “It’s a way for you to almost guarantee that your children will be into wine and will not just start from zero, because they’ll be a part of the culture growing up and then they’ll have a collection that can be passed on.” Jay Rosen, president of Washington Valley Wine Cellars, talks about the feature that is most important to a custom wine cellar. “For somebody who’s really a collector and really knowledgeable,

Berkowitz, developed a passion for design at a young age, discovering while pursuing a career in architecture that he preferred “the inside of the home to the outside.” Now a visionary interior designer, he understands that the sense of professionalism his firm exudes comes not just from the selection of materials and pieces chosen by designers, but from the personal care brought into each project. Berkowitz was first thrust into the spotlight after appearing on the HGTV series Show House Showdown, a show which proved to be the best platform to exhibit his outgoing personality and bold creative style. Since starting his design firm, Berkowitz has designed a wide range of residential, commercial and hospitality projects, infusing each with style and personality. “Our mission is to create something original, and new for every client,” Berkowitz says, “something that completely satisfies their needs and their dreams while infusing our many years of design and style expertise,” a result which he stresses can be difficult to achieve. However, Berkowitz relies on his personable character and ability to develop strong work relationships to impress and satisfy clients, a skill he is particularly proud to possess.

Joseph A. Berkowitz 113

“Anyone can look online, see our work and say ‘I love his work, I want to hire him.’ But the referrals and things that are said about me are often about me as a person,” he says. This ability to relate to clients is something that is evident throughout the company, and therefore provides an extra “flavor to our business,” Berkowitz notes. From the colorful array of completed interior design projects and renovations, there is no denying that JAB has a fully developed palette of flavors. JAB prioritizes not only creative, highquality design, but it also raises its standards in terms of style, tending to stray away from relying on trend forecasts or predictions. “We are here to show our client what our unique style is,” he states, saying that, in general, he prefers styles that infuse more classic design styles, such as Traditional, Contemporary and more, with even more layers of different colors, textures. “It’s all in the details,” he notes. In terms of design inspiration, the pool to draw from has no real limits, as Berkowitz says his “eyes are always wide open, and they can take in a lot.” Always appreciative of color and texture, he finds great history and antiquity in European design, one that exhibits layers of style that isn’t usually present in American design. By the same token, he says, the colors and playfulness associated with the typical Floridian style of design is one he enjoys as well. Whether it’s the beauty of Pennsylvania, where the brand is headquartered, or the busy streets of New York City that showcase style on every corner, life itself is a motivator and usually the ultimate source of inspiration for the designers at JAB. Some of the firm’s more popular projects can be found highlighted on JAB’s website, including a stunning residential design of a penthouse in North Palm Beach, Florida. The open space and beautiful architecture of the space gave him the perfect spark of creativity that helped shape the interior’s design. His vision, he mentions, included a massive, high-gloss wooden structure that was ultimately an arch that served as a dramatic focal point, one of his bigger ideas that to most would seem too intimidating to accomplish. However, working together with the homeowner helped bring this dream into reality. Berkowitz says he’d love the opportunity to work on projects outside the U.S, having only been a consultant on several projects abroad, but never working firsthand in a different country. Though not yet working overseas, the firm has several upcoming projects in the works that he is 114

highly anticipating. Though there are many perks to the job, he says all the hard work and in-depth correspondence culminates into one, glorious yet frantic day, his favorite day: installation day. “That day when you put it all together, and we do try and do it all in one day, I get a great rush from it,” he says, “I enjoy the organized chaos, being in the center and orchestrating all of it.” Being able to conduct such sophistication and high quality, Berkowitz says there’s so much more to being a boss in this industry. His advice? Focus on the business aspect, not just design. “It’s not just about being creative, there are a lot of creative people out there,” he states. “You have to know how to run a business, work with people, and overall have longevity, and that comes from being a good businessman.”

A phenomenon called synesthesia enables this artist to hear see music like few others. By Jessica Ganga

burst of blue. A shot of yellow. A splash of pinks and purples. These colors, and a combination of others, fill up the canvases that 28-year-old artist Melissa McCracken paints. The barrage of colors come to McCracken in her mind as she listens to her favorite music. Each note, each instrument making a song appear more beautiful than the next. Synesthesia, which is what allows McCracken to see the colorful imagery, is a perceptual and neurological condition where a person’s senses are essentially cross-wired. In other cases, people can taste words, give numbers and letters personalities or see them as different colors, which McCracken says she sees as well. It wasn’t until McCracken was about 16 years old that she discovered she had synesthesia. “I was choosing a ringtone for my cell phone,” says McCracken. “And I was trying to choose a song that would match my phone. I was sitting with a friend and I was listening to orange songs because I thought that they would complement my blue phone.” Everything clicked for her during her time in college where she studied psychology, along with communications. 116

It wasn’t until her family and friends began to understand synesthesia and have conversations about it, that McCracken decided it was time to paint what she saw. “I would kind of lay out the colors and the texture of it, but then it eventually got to the point where I was like, ‘This is silly. I feel like I should just show you what it is and you would have a better understanding of what I’m experiencing,’” says McCracken. At first, McCracken didn’t know what career path she wanted to take. She always knew she wanted to be an artist, but feared it wouldn’t be a good choice or a practical one. After college, she traveled to Germany to work as an au pair for a year. It was then, with the encouragement and support of her parents, that she decided to pursue art as her career, combining three of her favorite things: art, music and psychology. Each painting has its own way of going from song to canvas, McCracken explains. In the beginning, most of her paintings came from memory, her first piece coming to her from a memory of her older brother practicing Jimi Hendrix’s song “Little Wing” on guitar when they

were both younger. Instead of focusing on the setting of listening to her brother play the song over and over again, trying to imitate the famous guitarist, she remembered the swirl of colors it created. “It was mostly a colorful memory … I remember the pinks and the blues and kind of envisioning that as he’s playing it.” As a music lover, McCracken typically finds inspiration from simply listening to songs where she knows the painting as soon as the whirlpool of colors fills her head. McCracken does have her favorite artists to paint, including Radiohead, Frank Ocean and James Blake, who she says create colorful music that excites her every time she listens. To McCracken, different genres produce particular color palettes. She explains, “country music, for example, usually has earthier tones, like more browns and yellows and deep greens and musky blue-looking colors” But goes on to say that not every song or genre is tied to certain hues, with some genres such as hip-hop or electronic music going in different directions from song to song. McCracken notes that the colors of some songs surprise her. She recalls a song by James Blake, “Our Love Comes Back,” and how during the “washy pink and cloudy colors” that formed, a burst of a golden, pinkish orange color sparked out of nowhere, a new shock to her vision she had never experienced before, creating something she wasn’t too fond of. With color comes texture, which many of her paintings have due to the use of oil paints as her chosen medium. The “nice vibrancy and luster with them fare well with the music,” says McCracken, who goes on to say that “certain voices or certain instruments have specific-looking textures to them, too.” When creating her works of art, McCracken keeps in mind that she is a voice for what these songs look like and strives to accurately depict how it looks as the artwork comes to her mind. Although she primarily paints music, sounds have shaped pieces of art. One of those sounds: her father’s voice. “I remember sitting on his lap when I was little and I was falling asleep when he was talking with some friends,” says McCracken. “I remember the vibration of his voice and how deep it was … it was just a very vivid memory for me, so I painted that for him for his birthday one year.” McCracken cherishes her family’s love and confidence in her career. During her first gallery showing in Kansas City, Missouri, where she is 118

originally from, she recalls how it felt bringing everyone together. “It was so insane that anyone would even be there for anything that I had done,” says McCracken. “It’s one of the only times in my life where I’ve gotten to have friends and family and people from past walks of life all come together just to stop by and say ‘hi.’ I love those nights so much, they’re special.” During a transitional point in her career before one of her shows, McCracken created a piece on a whim that became an important one. The night before the show, McCracken stayed up and put together an 8-foot painting, which she titled “The In Between” based off “33 Gods” by Bon Iver. She went on to say that “as a painter, it kind of relinquished a lot of my inhibitions with painting.” McCracken believes her work also allows people to acknowledge and understand synesthesia, having others with the condition know it’s okay to have it. “I’ve gotten emails where

people are excited because, like me, they didn’t know that this was a thing.” She doesn’t look at the condition as a setback, but says it’s always welcoming to meet other synesthetes who relate to what she sees. McCracken looks forward to the future of her career and how she can expand her creativity. ”I’m honestly excited to open my lens of how to look at things,” she says. “I feel like in a lot of respects, that it’s kind of my role … to show people music differently, but I’m kind of ready to have those times be opened up to myself and try to challenge myself in ways to look at presenting art a little bit differently.” Along with inspiring herself as an artist, McCracken also offered inspiring words to young artists and people who are just getting started in their careers, saying that the best thing to do is not let the work become consuming. “I would say it’s a matter of, honestly, sticking to your guns with things

and doing what you want to do it, especially if you’re expressing yourself. The whole point is to express yourself. If [you] start to alter that for anyone else, I think that’s when it becomes a problem and gets in the way a little bit.”

ultidisciplinary designer Aljoud Lootah defines the essence of form and function with her intricate furniture designs. By mixing traditional design with modern features, Lootah creates works of art that catch the eye. Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Lootah draws inspiration from her Emirati culture, using design techniques and the stories that accompany them to craft her one-of-a-kind pieces. Starting out as a graphic design major and freelance graphic designer while in university, Lootah changed her path, deciding to focus on product design. In 2012, Lootah enrolled in a program

What was the first piece you designed and how have you seen yourself and your work grow since then? The first piece I designed was the Unfolding Unity stool back in 2012, launched at Design Days Dubai in 2013. Since then, I believe that I’ve grown immensely as a designer and as a business owner. Our studio was established a year after in 2014 and our team has been growing organically since then. My understanding for design, aesthetics and functionality has been developing with every project we work on, and my curiosity to explore materials is always on the rise. What are some words that best describe your style of work? Minimal. Material-driven. Sharp. Modern. “The Oru Series” was inspired by the intricate art of Japanese paper-folding. What about the art form inspired you to use it as a basis for your designs? The Oru Series was the first official collection as my debut as a designer. I had a major creativity block prior

by Dubai Culture and Tashkeel. There, she and a group of Emirati designers developed and designed a product that would have the chance to be showcased at Design Days Dubai, the first fair in Dubai that showcases limited edition pieces from around the region and around the world. After the 6-month program, she set her sights on product design and established her own Aljoud Lootah Design Studio. Lootah continues to push the limits with what she creates, and there is no creative end for her in sight. She sat down with Keller Williams Luxury International to talk about her work.

to working on the collection. I took a piece of paper and started folding it, and that is when I realized I could do much more in terms of shapes if I focused on turning the origamiinspired folds into functional products. I did a lot of research and there was something very exciting about working with my hands, which led to the creation of The Oru Series. I didn’t realize back then that these shapes I was working with, with their lines and edges, would be a constant staple in my newer collections.

trying to find what each motif represented. After breaking the patterns down, I worked on combining a staple shape which was found on most of the patterns: The Hourglass shape formed by two triangles reflected. It was said that it represents heaps of sand dunes and dates. I merged these shapes with geometric lines that represent the narrow bands of Al Sadu and then decided to apply them onto rugs. The rugs are hand-knotted in Afghanistan by female artisans who work on weaving as a source of living.

Can you describe the process and work that was put into creating the Misnad and Uwairyan carpets? Misnad and Uwairyan are both products that were inspired by Al Sadu weaving, a traditional indigenous style of weaving that employs color and pattern motifs as decorative elements that also convey within them social artifacts and cultural values. It is mostly practiced by women in rural communities of the United Arab Emirates to produce soft furnishings and decorative accessories. The patterns of Al Sadu weaving are very distinctive, mainly in the form of narrow bands of geometric designs. It was so [intriguing] and exciting to break down these patterns and study them while

What challenges did you face, if any, on your path to becoming a designer? I haven’t faced any challenges as a designer in the UAE. On the contrary, we are given so many opportunities to explore our passions, work on ideas and we are constantly provided support through governmental and private organizations that believe in the importance of the advancement of the design field. My main challenge revolves around finding suppliers and manufacturers who work with various materials and provide reasonably priced services. How do you combine your culture as an Emirati woman in your design work? I often draw inspirations from the Emirati

culture and crafts as well as historic references and try to derive elements from the history as well. These elements are studied and then designed in a modern way where it could be more relevant to the current world that we are living in. The main idea behind this is to tell the stories of our roots in a way that people from all over the world can relate to and admire. This is my way of keeping our history alive. What projects are you currently working on? We are currently in the process of finalizing our products for Dubai Design Week, as well as working on the final touches of a room divider, which was designed as part of the AlBurda Endowment commission. How do you hope to inspire young women that would like to get into design or start their own business? What advice would you give? I would advise them to work with passion and keep pursuing what they dream of; to face their fears and be committed. My father once said “Rules can be bent, but not broken.” I have lived by this for over 10 years and I believe that this is such a good saying for the younger generations to live by.

or many people, shopping for clothes is an unpleasant chore while others find it an addictive hobby. But for professional fashion stylists servicing an exclusive clientele, shopping is serious business. Personal stylists in three cities share their insights on how to address their elite clients’ needs. “My clients are high-achieving women,” reports personal stylist Hanna Lee of Chicago, noting women in their fifties — typically corporate CEOs, attorneys, physicians, and entrepreneurs — is the prime demographic for her firm, Hanna Lee Style. She also works with a few celebrities and out-of-town clients who book sessions months in advance of their visits to the Windy City. “Most women I work with wear and love classic, timeless styles,” says Lee of her clients who are busy with work, family and travel. “They appreciate the time that goes into a highly curated wardrobe and that’s why I’m hired, to save time so they can spend it where it matters to them,” says Lee. Her relationships with boutique owners 123

suggests, “Go ahead and rock it, as long as you feel comfortable.” She continues, “Fashion is not a science, so there’s lots of room for interpretation and application,” and suggests that confidence frequently makes bold choices appear more successful. Joubert believes a stylist often needs to double as a psychologist, easing clients’ insecurities and drawing attention to their best features. After first conducting an audit on his or her closet, Joubert meets her client for shopping. “Some clients like to go through the racks with me, but many prefer I pre-select items, so when they arrive we go straight to the fitting rooms.” For ladies, Joubert is currently fond of Paris-based labels Zadig & Voltaire, Maje and Sandro, while for male clients she appreciates John Varvatos, Hugo Boss and Ted Baker. Boutique-hopping on Rodeo Drive may be what many people envision of personal stylists in L.A., but those working with “real people” prefer high-end department stores, some of which make special accommodations for professional shoppers.

thoughtfully curated.” In Los Angeles, busy women turn to Joubert Styling for personalized wardrobe services. “There are definitely more business opportunities for personal styling in L.A. due to the entertainment industry, and because people here are very focused on appearances,” reports founder Catherine Joubert. While some of her clients are celebrities, most are studio executives, physicians and affluent stay-at-home moms looking for a new wardrobe after a pregnancy. “Some don’t have a personal style, others just need a fresh set of eyes,” explains Joubert. Forty percent of her clients are male and despite L.A.’s laid-back vibe, they do have occasions to dress up. “Men still need a suit, but it’s not as conservative as it used to be, so clients can be bolder with their fabric choices and don’t need to shy away from color,” says the stylist. Commenting that L.A. is very accepting of new styles, Joubert

result in VIP treatment for those clients, including special hours and previews of new collections. “My personal style is similar to most of my clients: classic with a twist,” says Lee. “I like to add something unexpected, which could be a pop of color, texture or a unique pair of shoes,” she adds. While Lee favors labels like Narcisco Rodriguez, Max Mara and Brunello Cucinelli, she also appreciates emerging designers. “I love small independent designers and support them when I can — that is, when they fit my client’s aesthetics and style,” qualifies the stylist. Lee encourages clients to discover new looks but respects their own fashion integrity. “Most of my clients have a very defined sense of their style so while they’re open to being pushed out of their comfort zones, I do it in a way that doesn’t sacrifice their own personal style,” she says. “Styling relationships are all about trust, so I’m honest with my clients and they appreciate that,” insists Lee. Lee acknowledges the Internet is making personal styling more accessible, so she has increased her own technology presence with virtual services that can engage customers across the country. However, she cautions, “There’s nothing like being in a dressing room, in person, showing clients looks that have been

In Philadelphia, image consultant and personal stylist Ashley Schafer offers a wide range of services, from closet audits and shopping to travel styling, including convenient virtual services. “As an image consultant, I want to know what your desired image is, how you want others to perceive you and what your lifestyle’s like,” explains Schafer, who begins every client relationship with a series of probing questions encompassing career, social activities and aspirations. Schafer also checks out the client’s closet to see what she is doing right and how she has gone astray. Many of Schafer’s clients are professional women who recently received a promotion, are seeking a career change or simply transitioning into a new chapter in their lives. Working with a professional to cultivate a new wardrobe and image is not an unjustified expense, insists Schafer. “Women think nothing of spending a few hundred dollars on their hair and invest in personal trainers, so styling and image consulting

Los Angeles’ Catherine Joubert searches for the perfect outfit. fit right into that category,” she explains. Like Joubert, Schafer prefers pre-selecting merchandise for her clients, who have access to private fitting rooms when they arrive at the store, their chic Ashley Schaferbranded shopping bags already packed with snacks and swag. “If a client walked into the store on her own, she might gravitate to items that are not the best fit or color for her, and the sales girl wouldn’t know what pieces suit her or her lifestyle,” she reports. “Anybody can drape themselves in Gucci and Louis Vuitton and look expensive,” says Schafer, who does not believe a woman needs to spend a fortune to look great. “Find a trend that feels authentic to your own sense of style and don’t feel pressured to participate in something just because it’s trendy,” recommends the Philadelphia image consultant, who believes most people just need a little help with their choices.

Trending Now Some winter styles are classically perennial while others are subject to the whims of Parisian designers and celebrity influencers. Here’s what’s hot this winter season: Outerwear: For warmth, women are learning that the dramatic-looking capes draping willowy runway models are actually very practical. Philadelphia stylist Ashley Schafer suggests investing in a “statement coat” distinguished by its coloring or detailing. Colors: Hanna Lee observes rich, saturated colors trending this season, along with monochromatic winter white outfits, a favorite of the Chicago stylist. Schafer adds that neon colors are also brightening the scene. Patterns: Lee reports houndstooth and plaid remain classic winter patterns, and L.A.’s Catherine Joubert reveals the emergence of animal prints in untraditional colors. Luxe Touch: Faux fur echoes a timeless expression of wintertime extravagance, and chic brands like Fendi and Balenciaga are splashing their logos over cashmere sweaters. Accessories: Schafer believes shoes, scarves and bags are great ways to test audacious trends (e.g. neon colors, bold prints), and suggests hats convey confidence. Menswear: Joubert reports that flannel — not the lumberjack look, but a more sophisticated interpretation — is a definite trend this season. 125

iving a more eco-conscious lifestyle can easily be done with just a few changes, from eliminating the use of plastic bags to growing your own vegetables. For businesses, changes can be made on both a small or large scale, including those that produce wine and spirits. Whether it’s promoting the importance of bees to foraging botanicals on the cliffs of Scotland, spirit craftsmen are taking it upon themselves to get closer to their ingredients and methods of production to advocate sustainability. Alcohol, in the simplest terms, is an agricultural product and depends on environments that are sustainably kept, from having a consistent clean water supply to keeping its pollinator population healthy. Sourcing from these environments and acting responsibly commercially comes down to the manufacturers and craftsmen themselves, and everyone does it differently. With regard to sustainable sourcing and production, however, the best brands understand that it’s all in the details. For many of these companies, paying attention to the “small things” is simply part of the

Destillaré Negroni

job, as founder/owner of Copper and Kings American Brandy Joe Heron says, adding that “doing is the highest state of consciousness.” Copper and Kings uses traditional copperpot distillation to forge natural, pure pot-still American brandies. These brandies are nonchill filtered with no additives, for an authentic, uncorrupted flavor, nose and color. According to Copper and Kings’ website, the art of brandy revolves around the concept of retention and concentration, much like how its methods of craftsmanship concentrate on sustainability. Forty-two solar panels were installed on the roof of the Copper and Kings headquarters, which supplements the building’s energy supply. The company also uses two closed-loop water recycling systems for production, one for chilling and one for boiling/heating the stills. The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is also a brand that thrives on meticulous details. During the inception of the brand’s signature gin, master distiller James McEwan worked with Dr. Richard and Mavis Gulliver, who introduced him to 33

herbs, leaves and flowers that could be sustainably foraged on the Scottish island of Islay. From the initial 33, McEwan selected 22 for the flavor and fragrance to be the main ingredients of The Botanist gin. These natural materials are abundant on the island, and are all common enough to be harvested without any impact on the wild populations. The result is a versatile spirit that, as a brand representative notes, is “an homage to Islay, a botanical exploration of its heritage.” The Botanist states that all aspects of sustainability are important, and works to incorporate these techniques throughout production, from foraging botanicals with care, selecting responsible suppliers, to the distillery itself. James Donaldson, The Botanist’s full-time professional forager since 2017, works to preserve the legacy of his predecessors — taking only what is needed and hand-picking in a way that doesn’t cause damage to the plants. “The 22 botanicals that give our gin the unique flavor are harvested sustainably around Islay between March and October,” the brand reports; they are then sent 127

creative processes with reusing warm water from condensation to start fermentation,” she adds. Hoskin says that there are many layers in claiming eco-integrity, and that challenges do come with upholding these commitments. There are five main categories to keep in mind, she notes: Raw Ingredients, Distilling, Bottling and Branding, Fleets and Company Transportation, and Tasting Room/Mercantile Operations. Montanya has developed eco-conscious production practices for each category that not only work to promote their sustainability promise, but also differentiates them from competitors. For example, the distillery is 100-percent wind-powered and produces 75 percent less landfill-bound waste, while its bottling center sources from cradle-to-cradle glass manufacturers and uses recycled paper, boxes and bio-corks. Though these changes sometimes take longer and aren’t always the easiest way, Hoskin affirms she wouldn’t want it done any other way. “This has been part of our ethos from day one. Every decision we make considers how we’ll impact the environment … I’ve never once

regretted this decision. I want to leave a habitable world for generations to come.” While steadying a course for this sustainable world, each brand has unique ways of showing its commitment to “going green” and paying it forward to their customers. Copper and Kings, for example, planted a Monarch butterfly garden to serve as a Monarch migratory way station, to help keep a “healthy pollinator world,” according to Heron. The Botanist founded The Botanist Foundation, a community interest company that supports local partners with sustainability and environmental projects. The brand even goes as far as encouraging people to use local, seasonal garnishes and foraged fruits and herbs in their cocktails. Though there’s much to be done in saving the planet overall, Hoskin notes that this should not dissuade individuals or companies from trying to gain eco-integrity. “One small steps leads to another, which leads to another. It’s always a work in progress, so you can’t let lofty goals keep you from starting in the first place,” she says.

to the Bruichladdich Distillery, which uses pure spring water from Octomore Farm. The distillery also makes a commitment to sustainability, banning single-use plastics, recycling production wastewater for heating, and using a fleet of electric cars. As noted on the brand’s website, Montanya Rums are the “culmination of a 30-year love affair with rum and a passion for introducing it to others — all while building a business that is a force for good in the world.” Founder/owner Karen Hoskin discovered her love for rum on a trip to India. Thirty years later and 9,000 feet above sea level in Crested Butte, Colorado, Hoskin’s dream of creating her own brand is fully realized in the Montanya Distillery, which uses its location to further integrate green methods of production. “We bottle our rums using pure mountain water from a snowmelt and spring-charged aquifer below our bottling facility,” Hoskin says, adding that the elevation allows the distillers to boil at a lower temperature, which is part of the formula that makes their rums so unique. “We use some
