Centered in the heart of downtown Dallas is Genesis, a multi-use commercial and cultural object. This structure follows a streak of cultural objects in this region. The project serves as a catalyst to connect the Winspear Opera House, the DMA, the Nasher, and the Perot all to Klyde Warren Park, in order to form a hub of activity in this district. The program of this object consists of seven floors of a contemporary museum, which will house a permanent collection with seasonal exhibits circulating through. Tied to the museum are two commercial entities. These entities serve to justify economic development of this site and bring amenities with rent-able space to the Klyde Warren area. In order to tie Klyde Warren to our site, a pedestrian bridge spans the road way allowing for pedestrians to move across the space. Upon entry into the object, the viewer is taken along a path up through the building. The path is a contrast between permanent exhibitions housed in the large volumes inserted into the facade and the seasonal exhibitions housed in the interstitial spaces. This precession justifies the placements of the volumes in contrast to the generic floor slab exhibition spaces as it gives the viewer only one path to follow.

The CraftHouse is centered inside Barcelona’s old city. This thick urban tissue is crowded with hard opaque buildings that hide all activity within their walls. The structure strives to provide transparency to this closed tissue. It provides both a space to work and to build or craft. Every component that resides within the glass shell is prefabricated. Thus making construction and assembly easy, but also allowing for large open spaces to be rearranged to every specific need. These spaces achieved by a series of stacking truss systems. During the industrial revolution, large, open floor, monster factories were born left and right, but since then these factories have needed a face lift and have been demolished by tourism and retail. The CraftHouse produces the 21st century factory made to be used by humans and their community. The result is a flagship for industrial revitalization and development in regards to construction and economics.

Who decides what is preserved and heralded? The building which houses a museum’s archive is a physical manifestation of its ideology. By consciously overturning the typical enclosed form, we can introduce a system of inclusivity and interaction. Alter Forum presents an alternative approach to socially ingrained notions of the museum typology. It resists institutionalized pyramidal relations between curators of museums’ content and the public. A work of architecture never exists apart from the social fabric, and our structure is only the bones of a cultural landmark, only being completed over time as the public sculpts and presents its identity. The open air museum is a reflection of the open invitation to create, and the ground, walls, platforms, and voids all serve as canvases and containers for expression. With use of the paint dispensary system, which is integrated into the structure, the ability to create is not limited by the access to medium. No piece, motif, or commentary is off limits, but public opinion decides the lifetime of any exhibition. This new typology opens avenues of connection with art, in which any piece can occupy, and where no place is off limits

The proposal for the new high-speed rail and master-plan intends to address certain questions about Houston and Texas scale transport and urbanity. As a city stitched together by both small and large scale urban organizations (i.e. The Woodlands suburb, or Grand Parkway), the project uses landscape to stitch together programs that have the potential of transforming this area of Houston into a new transportation hub that houses both new entrepreneurs, established corporations, old and new families, existing and emerging cultures and social behaviors, and visitors from all over Texas. Through a sensitive approach to community and optimistic vision for transportation, slippages of landscape carry pedestrians, vehicles, and trains to different edges of the site the house said programs. In the interest of constructing a station that has long-term permanence, a series of extended surfaces protect passengers from the elements and give the impression of being outside while in fact being inside. Sheltered from the elements, yet moving fast to the next destination.

COW & CALVES operate in a series of individualized guest houses all spanning from the central cow unit. The cow contains a large opening to view the aurora Borealis in full view. The reason only the cow has this feature as compared to the calves, is to encourage some interaction between guest. If the guest prefers to spend time in isolation, then they may return to their calf. The COW has a large opening to the sky, and openings to the axis the site sits on, to provide distinct views of the glorious scenery of Iceland. The cow contains a common living area, a full functioning kitchen, as well as an elite hot tub. The COW is designed with a traditional high gable roof, with a slight fillet to show a relation to her calves, but yet maintain a familiar form. The CALF is fitted with a large 1.5M radius insulated window, that frames the landscape to provide the guest with an individualized view for themselves. Because each view is different, this encourages guest to come back and choose a Calf with a different view, so that the experience will be different each time. The construction of the CALVES will be site casted concrete, with a form-work that can then be removed through the large window before the glazing is installed. The COW will be built out of traditional lumber, sod, and wood shingles, with glazing on both ends, so that a corridor of views is created. COW & CALVES achieves functional and aesthetic quality, while pushing the boundaries of form in order to create an attraction that will bring revenue to the existing farm resort by targeting new demographics of the instagram influencers and create an experience that will be talked around the world.

To Wonder. The beginning seed of this project was to capture this element of our desire within Architecture. Centered within the Oak Groove of the Zilker Botanical Gardens, the research center is to house both native and exotic species of cacti and succulents. This duality between native and exotic will play into the idea of wonder as these exotic plants will grow and habitat a world not of their own. The original notion of the project was a single greenhouse classroom combination. The breaking up of this program into the current concept serves as a counter to the tree canopy rather than an invader within the landscape. In order for the plant life to be sustained, maximum light is required. This anti-forest approach of the main conservatory form allows for the square footage of sunlight to be maximized without the need to disturb the local native tree canopy. The rest of the village is positions such that the buildings are shaded by the canopy to reduce energy consumption, but each unit contains one skylight. This skylight is orientated to capture the most light for the space. This village also allows for future growth and rearrangement of the entire gardens. The massaging and rearranging of such program allows the exotic to work its way into the world of its unknown. For us to wonder about all the prospects of such species from within our local environment.

+ Schematic Interior

The building operates as one continuous surface that covers the programs in a monolithic roof. This roof operates on a contemporary continuous scale from a far distance, but in approach, is recognizable as a traditional system due copper shingle construction. As the surface covers the hall and axillary program, it seems to hover over the ground floor, which produces covered outdoor environment and transparent circulation throughout the space. These are the results of one large cut to the overall surface at the ground level. The ground floor is enclosed by a continuous laminated spruce mullions and transoms, reaffirming transparency, but still maintaining energy conservation. (Triple pain glazing; Ug ≤ 0.6 W/m2K, g ≤ 0.5, light transmission > 70%) Beyond the large ground floor cut, the roof is defined by three conditions: opaque, perforated, or cut. The majority of the roof is wrapped in this opaque condition, consisting of complete coverage of copper shingles across the surface. A series of copper shingles contain perforations that allow for light to penetrate the space through triple glazing where lighting is needed or desired. Lastly, smaller cuts in the surface exist to provide lighting and views to both restaurant and gallery. These cuts are accomplished with laminated spruce windows between the openings or remaining open to form a terrace with the laminated spruce windows located in the interior.

JLC is a project surrounding the elements of transparency, rhythm, and detail. In order to facilitate better sales, the client needed the maximum about of transparency on the facade as possible without compromising privacy. The XMADE team approached this problem through a series of layered materials. The saturation of glass and metal frame the statue of the facade, but also allow the team to accomplish its goal. In the final elevation, one can denote the large metal elements on the right side, these provided privacy to the space as well as needed light. Many gestures, like this, populate the facade to provide maximum light to privacy. The facade goes beyond material, it provides the highest level of safety for the store and merchandise while not compromising on a single detail or connection. The images to the left show the early stages of the design process and the path that the team took in order to get to the final result on the previous page.

Due to the substance’s nature of selfawareness, when present in a classified territory, the substance begins to reference its surrounding context through the notion of artifacting, by pointing at. These artifacts become referential to map the exists of the substance in this territory. Noting that the substance can operate in and is not bound to only one territorial idea. Each territory is the striator to the smooth substance as it moves through space. These territorial ideas are represented in three manifestations. The Raw. The Cooked. And The Synthetic.. As the substance is in a constant state of flux, both in posture and territorially, a sense of maturity or senesces arises from this position. The algorithmic nature changes aspects of the substance the operation of artifacts continues and references are oriented throughout. This state of flux ties back to concepts of queer theory, as the substance is constantly changing its state. Here two data streams emerge from the project. One in the manipulation and exploitation of digital tools and work-flow and the second addressing concepts of cross-program and queerness. Both these concepts are driven under the condition of senescence as it lends to processes of digitally aided processes, generative objects, and states of flux and queerness.
