The Post Digital Garden _ Taxonomy of Volumes ARCH 205 _ Fall 2016 Indexicality Studio _ TAMU Instructor: Gabriel Esquivel

Floor One

Architecture today is entering a postdigital era. As the next generation of aspiring Architects, it is our task to define what this world will be. The possibilities are endless. This project is a speculative building centered in the complex and disorganized urban environment of Houston. The structure will serve as a flagship store for Issey Miyake in the Houston Galleria Area. The form was created through the combination of two separate studies: one of a twentieth century house through the process of “indexing, and the other a transgression of surface logic based on the clothing line of Issey Miyake. Having created two separate objects, the logics were combined to create a resulting urban garden. A scattered reality in this Post-Digital world. The field surrounding the building produces many ways of approach to the entrance, all demanding further exploration of the site. Upon entry, the inserted volumes redefine the operations of each floor and the wayfinding of each. This garden and structure begin to challenge the notion of program and site context. The result is a beatification and insertion into the complex urban fabric of the Galleria.

Alter Forum _ Expanding the typology of Museums NonArchitecture _ Summer 2017 Competition: “Showing” Collaborator: Hannah L. Terry

Birds - Eye View

Who decides what is preserved and heralded? The building which houses a museum’s archive is a physical manifestation of its ideology. By consciously overturning the typical enclosed form, we can introduce a system of inclusivity and interaction. Alter Forum presents an alternative approach to socially ingrained notions of the museum typology. It resists institutionalized pyramidal relations between curators of museums’ content and the public. A work of architecture never exists apart from the social fabric, and our structure is only the bones of a cultural landmark, only being completed over time as the public sculpts and presents its identity. The open air museum is a reflection of the open invitation to create, and the ground, walls, platforms, and voids all serve as canvases and containers for expression. With use of the paint dispensary system, which is integrated into the structure, the ability to create is not limited by the access to medium. No piece, motif, or commentary is off limits, but public opinion decides the lifetime of any exhibition. This new typology opens avenues of connection with art, in which any piece can occupy, and where no place is off limits

Sub Floor

The CraftHouse is centered inside Barcelona’s old city. This thick urban tissue is crowded with hard opaque buildings that hide all activity within their walls. The structure strives to provide transparency to this closed tissue. It provides both a space to work and to build or craft. Every component that resides within the glass shell is prefabricated. Thus making construction and assembly easy, but also allowing for large open spaces to be rearranged to every specific need. These spaces achieved by a series of stacking truss systems. During the industrial revolution, large, open floor, monster factories were born left and right, but since then these factories have needed a face lift and have been demolished by tourism and retail. The CraftHouse produces the 21st century factory made to be used by humans and their community. The result is a flagship for industrial revitalization and development in regards to construction and economics.

The proposal for the new high-speed rail and masterplan intends to address certain questions about Houston and Texas scale transport and urbanity. As a city stitched together by both small and large scale urban organizations (i.e. The Woodlands suburb, or Grand Parkway), the project uses landscape to stitch together programs that have the potential of transforming this area of Houston into a new transportation hub that houses both new entrepreneurs, established corporations, old and new families, existing and emerging cultures and social behaviors, and visitors from all over Texas. Through a sensitive approach to community and optimistic vision for transportation, slippages of landscape carry pedestrians, vehicles, and trains to different edges of the site the house said programs. In the interest of constructing a station that has longterm permanence, a series of extended surfaces protect passengers from the elements and give the impression of being outside while in fact being inside. Sheltered from the elements, yet moving fast to the next destination.

Genesis _ Object as Building ARCH 405 _ Fall 2018 Integrated Studio _ TAMU Instructor: Koichiro Aitani Collaborator: Nicholas G. Houser Roof Plan

Centered in the heart of downtown Dallas is Genesis, a multi-use commercial and cultural object. This structure follows a streak of cultural objects in this region. The project serves as a catalyst to connect the Winspear Opera House, the DMA, the Nasher, and the Perot all to Klyde Warren Park, in order to form a hub of activity in this district. The program of this object consists of seven floors of a contemporary museum, which will house a permanent collection with seasonal exhibits circulating through. Tied to the museum are two commercial entities. These entities serve to justify economic development of this site and bring amenities with rentable space to the Klyde Warren area. In order to tie Klyde Warren to our site, a pedestrian bridge spans the road way allowing for pedestrians to move across the space. Upon entry into the object, the viewer is taken along a path up through the building. The path is a contrast between permanent exhibitions housed in the large volumes inserted into the facade and the seasonal exhibitions housed in the interstitial spaces. This precession justifies the placements of the volumes in contrast to the generic floor slab exhibition spaces as it gives the viewer only one path to follow.
