The LIVE.WORK.MAKE brief for the second year of the masters was developed through meetings with real on site stakeholders. My project developed a masterplan for the site, a custom-build co-housing scheme, selfbuild live-work units and a creative arts maker school in the run down suburban context of Knowle West, Bristol. It sought to redefine traditional methods of living, working, and educating, where the ambition was to foster social cohesion and resiliance amongst a deprived and fractured community through making.

he design of these units has been orientated around developing a framework that enables all levels of society to take control of the design of their home. Residents are able to choose their level of involvement from complete construction, to self finish, or full turn key.

MAKER-WORK AN “OPEN-BUILDING” SYSTEM The design of the live work units has been differentiated from the residential character of the custom build houses to be tailored towards the “maker”. These units require more self build skills with a pre determined structure that inhabitants can infill as they wish. The twin glulam structure gives some unity to the street frontage amonst the organic infill. External space rises up through the levels, with the structure giving the potential for informal cover or a framework for greenery.

he progression of spaces through the building starts conceptually from the tail end in the form of material deliveries, these make their way through the building being used for occupants to realise their ideas. The creations are then celebrated in the gallery exhibition space at the other end.

The concept for the use of the materials stems from the structuralist theory of binary opposition, in the way that two terms or two related terms are opposite in meaning. The strategy was to emphasise this relationship and develop a complementary and contrasting material pallete that draws attention to the way the building is made.

RESIDENTIAL A planning application for 20 sustainable new homes in a riverside location in Box Wharf. The scheme maximises the use of the sites complicated topography. We also developed a smaller scheme of
12 homes on the opposite side of the river with a creative tech worker space. The scheme uses a subtle, contempory style that uses materials from the surrounding context.

Working in partnership with urban design specialists Metropolitan Workshops on behalf of Swindon Borough Council. There will be a choice of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bed homes for sale and be situated along both banks of the canal. The scheme aims to deliver a unique, and quality, housing offer for Swindon.

A contemporary new-build house which nestles in to the historic fabric of the village of Bruton in Somerset. Utilising a basement amenities floor, the scheme uses multpile pitched roof forms to give grandeur to the internal spaces that open out onto the enclosed south facing garden.

A new classroom and hall building and new nursery for Kingswood School in Bath. The project is currently on site. The new building will take the form of a collection of pitched and hipped roofs. Roofs and walls will be clad in western red cedar shingles, a woodland crafted response, with a scale that children can relate to. A plinth is formed in a tactile brick which has the tones of Bath stone, relating the building to the wider school site and the World Heritage City.
