declaration of intent What you will see in the following pages is a collection of my works throughout my professional and educational career, for which I have consistently excelled. However, I would like to stipulate here my yearning to provide more of a contribution than just design flare and an eye for the aesthetic and detail. I believe that Architecture as a profession is in a state of flux, where the next generation of architect will be required to be more dynamic and adjust to the ever changing economic climate and crises. Where I fit within this new role is still uncertain but this is my declaration that I will proceed with the attitude of exploration and open mindedness in the way that the role of the Architect will develop in the hope to ever avoid plateau and ensure continued growth & development. Having just completed nine months travelling through South East Asia with my girlfriend, we are now seeking a long term move to Australia with a refreshed sense of energy and purpose. I am ready more than ever to focus on progressing my Architecture career to the next level.

Architectural Designer
Profile I am a strong believer in the importance of the Architect for shaping the lives of those around us on more than just an aesthetic level. I have found developing creative and ambitious design solutions that are grounded with a solid understanding of tectonics, social & environmental impact to be my Architectural focus. I am inspired by an honest approach to design that lets space, structure and materials speak for themselves. Tutors and employers have often commented on the strength of my design eye and ability to think in 3D.

Hobbies I spent a lot of my spare time throughout University writing music and gigging at the weekends with a band. We had a couple of UK and European tours supporting larger American bands and played some great festivals including Glastonbury before disbanding. In the UK I liked to keep active in the evenings and weekends, playing squash for my local club and golf when weather permits. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into some Aussie sports during my time here.

The LIVE.WORK.MAKE brief for the second year of the masters was developed through meetings with real on site stakeholders. My project developed a masterplan for the site, a custom-build co-housing scheme, selfbuild live-work units and a creative arts maker school in the run down suburban context of Knowle West, Bristol. It sought to redefine traditional methods of living, working, and educating, where the ambition was to foster social cohesion and resiliance amongst a deprived and fractured community through making.

A Standardised Custom-Build Housing Solution
James Eyres
Maker-Work An “Open-Building” System The design of the live work units has been differentiated from the residential character of the custom build houses to be tailored towards the “maker”. These units require more self build skills with a pre determined structure that inhabitants can infill as they wish. The twin glulam structure gives some unity to the street frontage amonst the organic infill. External space rises up through the levels, with the structure giving the potential for informal cover or a framework for greenery.

The concept for the use of the materials stems from the structuralist theory of binary opposition, in the way that two terms or two related terms are opposite in meaning. The strategy was to emphasise this relationship and develop a complementary and contrasting material pallete that draws attention to the way the building is made.

This experiment used horizontal louvres which was later changed for vertical. The facade combines vertical timber cladding panels with louvering over glazing to dance studios. This allows the continuity of the facade to flow over the glazing and emit a glow across the harbourside and also helps to control solar gain and glare.

Structural Strategy
• Minimise on site construction by generating a kit of parts that can be quickly erected on site. • Expose and celebrate the buildings structure • Maximum flexibility for internal spaces • Structure sticks to the rigid 5 x 10m grid towards the North of the site and gradually begins to break on the way through the building
Primary structure (305 x 180mm) Secondary structure (180 x180mm)

About Stonewood Design A small practice of ten who have received national RIBA recognition for numerous projects and won BD Small Project Architect of the Year 2016. Stonewood Design’s work is founded in building. With a sister construction company, the practice cares and fully understands the detail. The theme that connects their work is their interest in craft and context. I had the ability to work on a diverse range of projects at different stages with an increased level of responsibility due to the practices small size.

Residential My Experience
A planning application for 20 sustainable new homes in a riverside location in Box Wharf. The scheme maximises the use of the sites complicated topography. We also developed a smaller scheme of 12 homes on the opposite side of the river with a creative tech worker space. The scheme uses a subtle, contempory style that uses materials from the surrounding context.

“Breaking the status quo of afforable housing
View along canalside An affordable housing scheme for 85 new homes in the Canalside area of Swindon. Working in partnership with urban design specialists Metropolitan Workshops on behalf of Swindon Borough Council. There will be a choice of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bed homes for sale and be situated along both banks of the canal. The scheme aims to deliver a unique, and quality, housing offer for Swindon.
My Experience I worked on early stage strategic masterplanning and helped develop unit types and visualisation. My experience studying house types and residential strategies at University was a helpful contribution to the team. Section through 3 bed typology

A new classroom and hall building and new nursery for Kingswood School in Bath. The project is currently on site. The new building will take the form of a collection of pitched and hipped roofs. Roofs and walls will be clad in western red cedar shingles, a woodland crafted response, with a scale that children can relate to. A plinth is formed in a tactile brick which has the tones of Bath stone, relating the building to the wider school site and the World Heritage City.

Paintworks Phase 3
This was a dense inner city residential scheme based in the heart of Bristol’s Creative Quarter. The original paintworks site was built in 1850 and used as a Victorian paint and varnish factory, and has since undergone a huge reinvention during the last decade. It was a great experience to work on such a large residential project in a small team. Experience summarised below: - Masterplanning strategies - House type design - Facade design - Revit modelling (daily) - Schedule information - Presentation material preperation - Attended public consultation - Tender information James Eyres

U G AN DA St. Michael’s Primary School, Busembatia, Uganda is a government aided school. Working as part of a small team we provided design ideas for a new Teachers’ Accommodation, building on their previous work with clay brick forms in Southern Africa.
Bear Pit I designed and built the project with a friend from Uni. “Air Your Laundry” was a one day event that aimed to create a hive of activity and interaction and change peoples negative perceptions of a key public space in the centre of Bristol known as the Bear Pit.
Using donated items, passers by were invited to purchase an item hanging from the structure for a donation that they see fit. These donations went on to the charity “Emmaus”, a charity that helps homeless people in need, a demographic of particular relevance to the Bear Pit.
