Off to a flying start

The WINGS secret agents entertain the crowds at the opening celebrations last night

BY SARAH PAGET EXPECTANT crowds were not disappointed by the high octane opening show.

Set in the evening light over Windsor Great Park, the spectacle was unlike any opening event many will have ever seen.

The theme of the camp ‘Making a Difference’ was central to the running of the show, with secret Agents Alice Rider, Matt Blonde and Tom Bourne hosting the evening.

The show started with the mission impossible theme and a stage filled with other ‘agents’ dressed in black, dancing, whilst

Agent Alice arrived by car, Agent Tom by Motor bike and Agent Matt abseiling the 6 meters down the back of the stage.

The voice of ‘W’ gave the 3 agents their mission and explained they had 5,000 other super agents to help in their mission to ‘make a difference’, evidence of which needs to be handed into the Communications Team Base

by Midday on Thursday.

Fast paced and entertaining throughout, the crowd were given a couple of surprises.

Not least when a video of some members of the cast dancing to ‘Eye

of the Tiger’ was shown on the big screens.

The stage was then filled with agents. They challenged the audience to learn the dance with them.

Many of the crowd took part, with much hilarity as they got it right and wrong in equal measure!

Towards the end of the outstanding show, the agents came on dressed in evening wear, they explained the events and attractions that you can look forward to this week, from the cinema to the talent contest.

Ending the show with a pillow fight as the crowd partied into the night with the after show disco.

Throughout the show the assistant agents (that’s you, yes you!) are

challenged to complete 7 tasks over the time they are here at WINGS2009.

Hopefully everyone would have heard the challenges being set during the show. But given the level of noise around the site at the time, veyr few probably did.

And whatever happens over the course of the week, it’ll will make everyone be really vigilant come next week’s closing celebration.

The village that WINGS built WingFact

Ever wondered just how a jamboree site is constructed?

BY SARAH PAGET TWO weeks ago this site would have been unrecognisable as the home of WINGS 2009. The pre-build team arrived on the 18th of July some of them haven’t left site since.

And so much has happened since then. Just 24 hours later the full site was pegged out for where each area was to go.

The very next day the first portacabins arrived, shortly followed by the first marquee being pitched on the 22nd.

All the Sub Camp hubs were up by the following day with the all important toilets first being housed another 24 hours later. By July 29th, participants were able to access their own view of the site because the web cam went live.

The stage arrived when the web cam went live and the team have been working flat out to get it ready in time for rehearsals, and the opening event on Saturday evening.

First for facilities

BY SARAH PAGET THERE are many teams to support you and ensure you enjoy your week in the sun here at WINGS2009.

The Programme Team have worked hard to ensure that all the activities run smoothly.

Providing transport to the off site activities and bringing together the donations of boats that have been lent for the water sports. They would like to thank all those who have helped out.

The programme admin centre will be open from 08:30 until 21:30 daily.

The Admin Team will provide admin support for all, no admin question is too big or small and they will also provide photocopying and car passes.

The International Centre provides the opportunity to showcase items from your home country.

There will be 21 on show. There is also the opportunity to visit and tag your group/troop/unit on the maps pinned to the wall.

Scoutmed are providing the field hospital with space to treat 8 minor

injuries, 2 resus areas, a clean area for stitching injuries, a general examination area and an admin area.

They also have the facility to have people stay in over night if they have been returned from hospital. They will happily see anyone – no matter the injury.

The WINGS2009 shop and One Stop Scouting will be open 10:00 until 19:00, whilst Scout Shop will be open 08:30 until 21:30 (closed between 18:00 and 19:00). For all your souvenirs and scouting needs.

The Communications Team Base – is home for your Jamboree Newspaper ‘Wingspan’, which will be delivered to your sub camp hub daily.

Wings FM – your very own radio station you can tune into day and night on 107.2 FM. The Photography Team, will be selling copies of photo’s of groups and events throughout WINGS via the info centre.

Whilst the Video Team are filming to compile a souvenir DVD – the essential end to your time at camp.

Wings participants pitch up

BY EMMA PARKER THE sense of excitement on site grew as participants arrived to start their WINGS2009 adventure.

The rain held off for the early arrivals as the units battled with the wind to pitch their tents on the sub camps. Laughter echoed across the sites as groups introduced themselves to their new neighbours and helped each other build their homes for the next week.

The journeys to WINGS2009 varied, Hugh Chadwick, an Explorer Scout from Reading decided to travel here in a very different way; cycling the 2 hour journey towing all of his kit in a special trailer: “I started out on the country roads, but started getting lost so I followed the signs to Windsor and eventually found my way here.”

Melissa Hyslop, a New Zealand Guide had more of a difficult journey.

She spent 23 hours in the air and her trip started on Tuesday. That was because she’d had to fly from Dunedin to Auckland to meet up with the guides she’ll spend the week with.

Arriving at the site Melissa looks tired but excited. “It’s my final event as a participant and I really want to make the most of it. I have never been to England and it is somewhere I have always wanted to go.”

A unit of Pathfinders from Calgary in Canada also had a long journey here, but decided to spend some time at Earlywood Scout and Guide campsite before their arrival.

ing on the Archimedes sub camp.

Nearby an 18 strong unit from Austria where talking about their journey and their stay at a Scout hut in Old Windsor for the last 2 days.

They then walked the four miles to the WINGS site. They chose to come to here because English is a language they all speak, and the unit made up of 10-13 year olds wanted to enjoy their first international Scouting experience.

Inventors inspire afternoon of fun ‘n’ games As each Sub Camp gears up for a host of activities based on the ‘great thinkers’ that their homes for the next week have been named after Wingspan’s Emma Parker and Kate Smith-Crallen sneaked across the site for a preview It’s the start of something special today. After your arrival and settling in, it’s time to get down to some serious adventure – and you can start right now in your Sub Camps.

Archimedes Sub Camp will be running a Mini Olympics for the participants staying there. Events include100 metres, steeplechase and long jump but all come with a twist.

Participants will spend the day meeting other people staying on their sub camp and also try out bases themed around the countries or counties belonging to each Sub Camp.

The young people will be given a checklist and have to aim to visit five Mini Olympic activities and 10 other activities and could receive a prize at the evening celebration on the main Sub Camp stage.

At Bell Sub Camp, named after the inventor of the telephone Alexander Graham Bell, the activities are all themed around Communication. With many different challenges geared for developing problem solving and communication skills such as Flip-a-roo and knot human.

It’s hoped these activities will encourage

you to meet new people and get to know the people you will be living with for the week.

Each of the 60 units will also be bringing an activity unique to them to share with the fellow residents.

Morland Sub Camp’s activities will be themed around Challenge, with incident challenges being run by the staff team.

Each unit also has to provide a challenge of their own. Teams of five to seven participants will be taking part and working together to solving logic, physical, Scouting and Guiding problems. They will then celebrate achievement in the evening on the sub camp stage.

The aim of these activities is to get the young people meeting and bonding with others as quickly as possible after they arrive on site.

In the midst of De Havilland Sub Camp participants can take part in a massive meet and greet based quiz based on facts about aeroplanes.

It’s followed by a rocket building competition where teams battle to create the best rocket.

Participants arrive for a week of activities

The Sub Camp team hope this will encourage young people to meet as many people from their Sub Camp as they can and also follow in the successful career that De Havilland had.

There are loads of activities going on at Harington Sub Camp includ ing games and

sports as well as an Elizabethan area including a period style wood worker.

International charities, Oxfam and Water Aid will also be on hand to look at and help develop participants understanding of international issues and water conservation.

This diverse programme has been created to echo Harrington’s life and work in sanitation.

At lunch time there will be a big picnic involving all of the young people and adults on the Sub Camp and also a chance to view entertainment from other cultures on the sub camp stage.

Daily Round Up What’s On Today

It’s a day to spend in your sub camps, enjoy what’s on offer and prepare yourself for the week ahead.

Don’t forget, the Communications Team have a raft of photographers out and about across the site all day.

THE backstage area is buzzing with excite-

ment after a fantastic opening celebration.

The exciting show is the result of months of rehearsals, “it’s been really great to see it all come together, the crowd were amazing” says Graeme, one of the cast members.

The cast are really pleased with how it went and are looking forward to the disco and after party. The whole cast is excited to go and meet other WINGS participants.

The cast is made up of young people from Scouts, Explorers and dancers from the Brits School, the same place, Leona Lewis, and The Kooks trained. So, who knows, you may have seen the next chart topping sensation on stage last night!

Tom, Matt and Alice, the WINGS secret agents tell me they’ve really enjoyed the rehearsals. Alice tells me “It’s really cool pretending to be a spy”. The content of the show has been top secret so all the cast have had to practise their real life spy skills making sure that no one else found out what was going to happen.

They have been on site since Wednesday practising on the stage. Earlier rehearsals had been at smaller venue without many of the props, so the cast have been getting used to the size of the stage and all the special effects. Cast member, Flick, tells me “the pyrotechnics and special effects were really cool on the stage”.

And that’s where the newspaper comes in. Every single person at the Jamboree has a different and unique experience. And while some of us will try it’s simply impossible to try and capture the 7,000 journeys of each and every participant and to follow them in detail. But sharing those experiences is one of the joys of Jamborees.

So if you have an interesting story to tell, a message to send, an experience you think others will enjoy hearing about tell us, and we’ll tell the rest of WINGS2009.

There’s no excuse, whether this is your first or 101st Jamboree, if it’s interesting be proud of it and shout it out loud. Just drop into the Communications team base and we’ll get someone to talk to you, or you can even sit and write it yourself.

other from shows last year, for some this has been their first time camping. “I’ve made some really good friends,” Georgina said, “we’ve had a great laugh”. I asked the cast if they would do the show again, Jenna told me “Yes, definitely!”

Of course the cast couldn’t do it without the help and support of the staff team behind them, a point they were all keen to express.

Tune in and Wing it with Pete NEXT time you’re out and about WINGS2009 look for the radio DJ Pete Gamble-Beresford who spends his time interviewing just about anyone on site!

Pete’s WINGS FM show Out And About is a three hour slot presented live from anywhere on camp and you could be his next guest whether it’s in the queue for the ice cream van or splashing around the water activities zone.

University student and Scout helper Pete took on the busy schedule of WINGS FM presenter after spending a week behind the microphone at the Essex Scout Jamboree’s FM station Jungle Radio.

“It’s something so different from normal. I love asking what’s going on and getting involved.” said Pete.

His Out And About Show is a great way of interacting with everyone on site and in return for an interview you can request any song you like to be played on air.
