The Certificate introduces and develops skills in Financial Performance Management, Analysis of Financial Statements, Financial Management and Risk Management.

Die AHi sluit nog 'n opwindende en suksesvolle jaar af met die 2013 nasionale kongres wat hierdie jaar te Potchefstroom/Tlokwe plaasvind. Dit beloof 'n reeks opwindende en interaktiewe werkswinkels oor die rol van sakekamers in plaaslike toerisme, plaaslike ekonomiese ontwikkeling en plaaslike regering en die waardeproposisie vir sakelede. Terselftertyd hied die SA Raad van Sakevroue ook hul kongres aan. Op Vrydag 18 Oktober open die kongres met top sprekers soos Prof Raymond Parsons, Dr. Brand Pretorius, Mnre Clem Sunter en Vusie Madonsela (DG van CoGTA) wat oor die Nasionale Ontwikkelingsplan, sakeleierskap, plaaslike regering en die SuidAfrikaanse ekonomie in die bree gaanpraat. Die kongres word afgesluit met 'n gala-funksie waartydens toekennings vir die Ondememing van die Jaar-, Sakekamer van die Jaar- en Sakeleier van die Jaar oorhandig sal word. Die grondslag vir enige suksesvolle sakebeweging le in die gehalte van leierskap en die ontsluiting van 'n gedeelde visie op sakekamer-, provinsiale-, nasionale- en korporatiewe vlak. Binne AHi verband is ons geseend met visionere leierskap op elke terrein en

'n vrywilligerskorps wat die belange van sakelede, die bree gemeenskap en Suid-Afrika met oorgawe dien. Ja die uitdagings is daar en die entrepreneur staan dikwels alleen in sy stryd om dit te oorkom. Dis egter die spilpunt waarom entrepreneurskap draai - om uitdagings in geleenthede te omskep en om welvaart en werksgeleenthede te skep. Die AHi salueer elke entrepreneur wat hul daagliks afsloof om hul besighede suksesvol te bedryf en alle sakelui wat op korporatiewe vlak werksaam is. Deur u kreatiwiteit en produktiwiteit maak u van Suid-Afrika 'n beter plek. Die afgelope jaar is ook gekenmerk deur indiepte besinning oor toekoms van die AHi. In die verband is daar heelwat nuwe aksies wat betref die vestiging en ondersteuning van sakekamers, verskaffing van sakedienste, lewering van kommentaar op sakebeleid, inisiering van aktiwiteite om 'n gunstige en dinamiese sakeomgewing te ontwikkel en loodsing van bepaalde aksies om sakevolhoubaarheid te verseker. Toekomstige suksesse gaan egter grootliks afhang van die aard en omvang van wen-wen vennootskappe tussen die AHi, sakekamers, die korporatiewe sektor, plaaslike munisipaliteite,

regeringsdepartemente en ' n horde ander vennote. 'n Stewige grondslag is gele en vele vensters van geleenthede om Suid-Afrika ekonomies te groei wag om geopen teword. Dankie aan die direksie, bestuur, trustees, die nasionale en provinsiale raad, voorsittersforum, Ekondev en WGO direksies, SA Raad van Sakevroue, Sakekamerbesture en lede, Korporatiewe en Sakelede asook BUSA en NEDLAC vir die ondersteuning, samewerking en sinergiee. So neem ons Suid-Afrika se ekonomie en gemeenskapsontwikkeling van krag tot krag. Aan almal wat meegehelp bet om die kongres te reel, ons sien werklik uit na wat julle bet om op te dis. Die Potch-Tiokwe sakekamer, wat pas 'n tweede verjaarsdag gevier het, is trots op dft wat sedert die ontstaan van die Sakekamer bereik is. Die Sakekamer soos hy vandag daaruitsien, het ontstaan nadat die plaaslike owerheid sowel as sakelui, 'n behoefte uitgespreek het om met mekaar te skakel oor kwessies wat be ide partye raak. Daar is van die staanspoor besluit dat die Potch-Tiokwe Sakekamer 'n sakekamervan medewerkers moet wees wat saamwerk om 'n beter Potchefstroom viral sy inwoners te bewerkstellig. Om dit reg te kry is daar onder die vaandel van die Potch-Tiokwe Sakekamer, Subkomitees geskep, met 'n sameroeper wat projekte van elke komitee dryf. Voorbeelde hiervan is:

Die Maak Potch Mooi sub-komitee wat 'n trollieprojek van stapel gestuur het, wat nie net sorg vir 'n skoner Potchefstroom nie, maar wat terselfdertyd ook werk skep.

Daar is in samewerking met die Tlokwe Stadsraad trollies aangekoop, wat elk op 'n eie roete werk, en advertensiespasie wat op elke trollie verkoop word dra by om uitgawes van die projek te finansier en die trolliewerker se salaris te betaal. Vrywilligers in die sakegemeenskap help om hierdie projek te administreer. Die Onderwys en Opvoedlng subkomitee lewer veral 'n bydra in die skole in ons minder gegoede woonbuurte en daar is baie aandag aan fasiliteite en bestuur gegee. Deur hierdie komitee se werk is toegesien dat 'n plaasskool met gebrekkige fasiliteite 'n ander skoolgebou in die omgewing wat reeds 10 jaar leeg staan eersdaags kan be nut. Hulle het ook 'n die 'Cleanliness = Godliness' projek by skole van stapel gestuur, asook 'n projek waar kinders rommel 'inruil' vir skryfbehoeftes. Die Veiligheid en Sekuriteit subkomitee werk n6u sa am met die GPF

met projekte soos die Happy Boys Sokker klub, 'n Huis van Veiligheid en 'n bewusmakings-veldtog aan inwoners, dat sigbare items in motors misdaad aanhelp. Hulle is ook in samewerking met die Gemeenskapdienskomitee en die Potchefstroom Drug Forum betrokke by 'n veldtog teen dwelmmisbruik wat werk aan 'n reuse bewusmakingsveldtog en wat ook die vestiging van 'n 'Mighty Wings' rehabilitasie fasiliteit in Potchefstroom in die vooruitsig het.

Die Gemeenskapsdienste subkomitee het begin deur 'n data basis op te stel van aile welsynsorganisasies werksaam in Potchefstroom en verskeie samewerkingsooreenkomste is hieruit gebore. 'n Voorbeeld hiervan is die 'Stop Feeding the Problem' veldtog. Met hierdie veldtog word gepoog om die gemeenskap bewus te maak daarvan dat kontant aan bedelaars die bron van baie probleme is. Daar kan koepons (1 koepon = halwe brood+ SOOml melk) by enige SPAR en die lnsleep-kafee in

The current world economic environment is beset with major challenges on all fronts. Humanity faces crises of major or lesser proportions ranging from natural, environmental, economic and social perspectives. Everywhere you look you sense the groaning of all creation, as the sacred writing would put it. South Africa has not been able to side step these debilitating issues even though we are an emerging economy. From the resigned sighs of the jobless and homeless, to the silent cries of the so -called •street kids• and child - headed homes as well as the death throes of the rhino as a threatened specie of our planet earth. Yes, everywhere we look or listen we can see and hear the silent cry of planet earth. Unless swift action is taken the situation will continue to deteriorate, more and more of our universe will decline into disintegration and hopelessness. Indeed this does not bode well for a sustainable, prosperous and politically stable future that we want to build as humanity, as a nation, as a community and as neighbors. The South African government recognizes the urgency of the situation and is developing various social safety net strategies to uplift those who are outside the economic mainstream and address the myriad environmental and natural disasters that stalk us. Whilst we must support these efforts, however, clearly we still need to do much more and walk the extra mile. Government alone cannot cope with the immense challenges of development that face us all. There is now therefore a glaring need for all able citizens to actively support charitable civil society organizations. This is good citizenship. This need has long been recognized and regulated in the business world as well. The King reports call upon businesses and companies, as corporate citizens to account not only on their monetary profits but on their triple bottom line rather. The triple bottom line refers to how a corporation deals with and reports on its impact and behaviour in respect to people, planet and profit. It reflects a corporation•s greater transparency and accountability in its public reporting, communication and disclosure with regard to how the corporate entity performs in environmental, social and economic dimensions.

In simple terms, businesses are called upon to care for and give within the spheres of their operation. But giving starts with the individual, it is a personal thing. All people are equally endowed with the ability to give. The challenge is the will, for we are called notto give only money, which is too tied to mention. But we are called to give of ourselves- our time, support, skills, knowledge, abilities, capacities and our integrity. Volunteerism, this is the new kind of activism. By volunteering, you have the opportunity to build your social circles while reaping the physical, mental and spiritual benefits from the labor you contribute to your favorite cause. There is a certain inexplicable feeling of satisfaction that one derives in alleviating the adverse situation of someone. The act of helping others can create an improved sense of well-being. Knowing that you sacrificed something such as time, finances or property in order to help others in need can give you a sense of purpose in life or work as well as an inner satisfaction. No wonder it is said •blessed is the hand that gives than the one that receives•. But giving can also be described in negative terms - by not littering the streets, not harming the trees or trashing the seas we are preserving the environment as a gift to the next generation. And we can even better this by planting a tree or picking up litter before our feet. Yes, giving of yourself can be as simple as listening to the cries of a neighbor undergoing a difficult period and just showing that you understand to sharing your soup dish with the old poor widow down the street. So, in a nutshell, the silent groans of our world are a desperate call to all of us. It is the same cry that the hallowed scripture writings describe as a call for the revelation ofthe sons of God. We are called upon as institutions and as individuals, to solve problems and save lives- both down the street and around the world. We are urged, each one of us, regardless of income, available time, age, and skills, to help to give this planet a chance and enable the coming generations to live out their dreams.

Stigting van die Ahi Die klimaat wat die Ekonomiese Volkskongres van Oktober 1939 en die gevolglike stigting van die Reddingsdaadfonds en die Ekonomiese lnstituut geskep het, het die geboorte van die Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut in 1942 moontl ik gemaak. Die Ekonomiese lnstituut het in sy doelwitte gestel'n program van aksie en op 30 November 1940 is besluit tot die stigting van 'n Afrikaanse Handelaarsvereniging. Dit was in die oorlogsjare en skaars voorrade kon nie bekom word nie. 'n Emstige gebrek aan finansiering vir die kleinhandel en die feit dat die Afrikaanse taal in die handel oor die hoof gesien is, het alias bygedra tot die behoefte aan 'n Afrikaanse sake-organisasie. In heitdie stadium het dr J G van der Merwe (Kaalkop vd Merwe) van Heilbron op die gedagte van de stigting van 'n Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut gekom.

Hy het dr M S Louw, hoofbestuurder van Sanlam geskakel en gedurende 'n potjie gholf op die Maccauvlei gholfbaan naby Vereeniging het hulle twee besl uit om hulle te beywer vir die stigting van 'nAfrikaanse Handelsinstituut. 'n Komitee is benoem om die stigting van die Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut te bewerkstellig deur die akte van statute voor te berei en 'n stigti ngskongres te bel~. Lede van die Komitee was dr J G van der Merwe (Voorsitter), dr AJ Stals, dr Nick Diederichs en mnr W Buhrmann. Die eerste vergadering van die Komitee was op 10 Februarie 1942 in Johannesburg. Hierdie vergadering word beskou as die stigti ngsvergadering van dieAfri kaanse Handelsi nstituut.

Oogmerke en doelstellings Om die handelsprobleme van ons land en van die Afrikaner in die besonderwetenskaplik te ondersoek. Om 'n eie buro te stig vir die versameling en verwerking van inligting. Om die bevindings van sy ondersoeke en die versamelde inligting tot beskikking van sy lade te stel- hy moet dus voorligting en beroepsleiding gee. Om hom te beywer vir die toepassing van 'n gesonde krediet- en handelsbeleid; Om as spreekbuis en kampvegter van die Afrikanerondememer en die Afrikaanse handel in die algemeen op tetree. Dr J G van dar Merwe is verkies as die eerste voorsitter van die Die Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut met dr M S Louw as voorsitter. eerste openbare vergadering na die stigting was in Bethlehem.

Met die stigting van die lnstiuut het Afrikaans wat eers as handelstaal byna geen erkenning en gebruik gehad het nie, geleidelik tot sy reg begin kom. Die Handhawersbond het belangrike werk verrig deurdat sakeondernemings Afrikaanssprekende toonbankklerke moes aanstel. Met die groei van Federale Volksbeleggings en Volkskas het die Afrikaanse sakeman minder afhanklik geword van vreemde kapitaalbronne. In 1945 met die Tweede W~reldoorlog verby word Afrikaanse Sakekamers en plaaslike takke van die Handelsinstituut gestig. Die eerste Sakekamer is in Johannesburg gestig, daarop volg sakekamers in Pretoria, Kaapstad, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Klerksdorp, Swellendam, Potgietersrus, Nylstroom en Brakpan.

Hy het voorts oor die Wes-Kaap, van waar hy kom, gepraat en vertel hoe Afrikaanssprekende en Xhosasprekende mense daar saamwerk. "Ons het onlangs 'n konferensie slegs in Xhosa gehou en daaruit het die stigting van die eerste Xhosa-koerant in die Wes-Kaap voortgevloei." Sodoende word 'n nuwe advertensie-bedryf geskep en werk word ook geskep. Vander Rheede het genoemAfrikaans is opgetel as 'n kombuistaal en is nou 'n taal met aansien. Publikasies soos Die Burger, Volksblad, Beeld en Rapport vorm die kern van dieAfrikaanse taaltradisie. Hy het beklemtoon Suid-Afrika se probleme kan nie met die apartheidsdenke van 20 jaar gelede, die imperialistiese denke of Jan van Riebeeck se denke opgelos word nie. "Ons het 'n positiewe benadering en 'n oop en eerlike agenda nodig."

Mense van Kaliber Die AHi het deur deur die jare mense met kaliber en passie aangetrek. Dr MS Louw bet waardige voetspore gelaat waarop die ander presidente kon volg. AB nederige, eerlike en opregte mens het Marthinus Smuts Louw 'n ontsaglike aandeel gehad in die uitbouing en opheffing van die Afrikaner op verskeie terreine. Sy aandeel in die ekonomiese bewuswording van die Afrikaner, laat in die dertigeJjare, dien vandag nog as inspirasie vir 'n Afrikaner sakegemeenskap, wat nie slegs met trots sy aandeel in die ekonomie handhaaf nie, maar steeds doelgerig daarin slaag om hierdie aandeel verderuit te bou. Die topstrukture van die AHi se onlangse presidente sluit in mense van die kalibervan dr Mathew Phosa, dr Franklin Sonn, profEltie Links en me Venete Klein, die eerste vroulike president van dieAHi. Die AHi het ook sy nasionale hootbestuur verbreed om die diversiteit van ons land beter te weerspieel, en bevorder die samewerking met ander kamerbewegings op plaaslike vlak. Uit die gesk:iedenis en inisiatiewe van die AHi kan mens die gevolgtrekking maak dat die organisasie besonder suksesvol was in die bereik:ing van sy doelwitte.

Noordwes AHi Die ontwikkeling van plattelandse dorpe en gemeenskappe in Noordwes is een van die prioriteite vervat in die A Hi se strategiese plan van aksie. John Goosen, die AHi se Noordwes-woordvoerder, se benewens fokusgebiede soos die uitbreiding van sakekamers en skakeling met plaaslike owerhede en die provinsiale regering van Noordwes, is plaaslike ekonomiese ontwikkeling, die ontwikkeling van entrepreneurskap, gepaardgaande toepaslike opleiding, werkskepping en mentorskap verdere komponente wat hoog op die AHi se agenda verskyn. "Ondersteuning aan sakelede in die handel, nywerheid en georganiseerde landbou ter bevordering van hul sakebelange, moet deurgaans saamgelees word," se Goosen. Voorts is kommunikasie en wedersydse samewerking met hierdie sektore van deurlopende belang. Noordwes-Universiteit (NWU) en Noordwes Provinsiale Regering neem handevir'n blinkertoekoms lnstitusionele Kantoor - Die Noordwes-Universiteit (NWU) en die Noordwes Provinsiale Regering het Dinsdag tydens 'n seremonie by die Mmabatho Hotelskool in Mafikeng 'n Memorandum van Verstandhouding (MvV) onderteken. Die MvV vorm die grondslag vir samewerking in uiteenlopende belangstellingsareas. Die samewerking tussen die NWU en die Noordwes Provinsiale Regering is van groot belang vir die mense van Noordwes en is daarop gemik om die lewens van die burgers van die provinsie te ondersteun en te verryk. Dit behels die dee I van kennis en kundigheid en sal kapasiteit bou op gebiede soos navorsing, ontwikkeling, sosio-ekonomiese beplanning, armoedeverligting en landbou-ontwikkeling. Eloff: "Die ondertekening van die MvV is belyn met die nasionale ontwikkelingsplan en ondersteun ons institusionele driejaarplan en sal die ontwikkeling van die onderskeie kampusnisse bevorder." Premier Thandi Modise het ook die belangrikheid van die MvV benadruk. "Dit is 'n huwelik tussen die mense van die Noordwes en akademiese kundigheid . Premier Modise het gese dat die verhouding tussen die NWU en die provinsiale regering sal bydra tot die skep van 'nstaatwat daartoe in staat is om vir sy burgers te sorg. Hierdie universiteit het wonderlike mense opgelewer en ons is trots daarop. Die meeste van die senior regters is oudstudente van die NWU." Sy glo dat die deel van kennis en kundigheid wedersyds voordelig sal wees. Die kundigheid van die NWU sal die regering in staat stel om "in te kom in hierdie ruimtes waar ons nie kon inkom nie". y business is situated halfway between Graaff-Reinet and PE on our farm. Kamferspoort. between Klipplaat and Steytlerville. We farm with Angora goats. Merino sheep and a small amount of cattle. I started my business at the end of 1998 after attending the mohair expo in Beaufort-West. The first batch of blankets I received was consignment stock and after a few months I was able to buy more blankets and socks to resell. What started as a small business where I only bought and resold the products, has grown to a business with 9 outlets and roughly 12 people who knit and crochet products like blankets. gloves. beanies. cushions. shrugs and womans clothing. I trained a few ladies on our. and neighbouring farms that had no income before. We also did jerseys for a designer for the London Fashion Week and made some of the products in the mohair signature collection that was on display at the design indaba in Cape Town and Maison and Object in Paris. Some of my products have featured in South-African magazines. In 2010 I was nominated as a finalist for the Landbouweekblad and Sanlam competition for farmer's wives that run a business on their farms . In 2013 I was second runner up in my category in the Africa growth competition for best small companies

'n Huishoudelike Naam ... 'n Familie besigheid wat sedert 1958 bestaan en steeds in die Nel naam bedryf word. Eben Nel, die eienaar sedert 1996, alhoewel alreeds betrokke sedert 1983, het grootgeword onder die vleismeester, Gerrie Nel(vader).

e started the sanctuary on December 16"' 2007, as a family it was a huge step, a lot of sacrifices had to be made, my wife had to give up a huge house with everything in it and move into a farm house that once was a dairy, it wasn't easy for her and it just got harder as the months went by. My intentions were always to start a haven for huskies, I had 18 huskies and three wolves, I never ever saw what was going to happen next. We had built two enclosures of 2 500m2 each for all our animals and we thoughtthat was that, that was only the start. Kia was my first wolf, a beautiful guy, who was kind and gentle, he came from a couple in Dainfern who kept him locked up in a small court yard, but I got Kia and he lived with my huskies, at first he was scared, it took some getting used too, being surrounded by a huge pack of hyperactive huskies, he would snap at them just to defend himself, but soon he came to realize that they were just being huskies, playing with everything they came across. Soon after that I got a call about a wolf who had just had puppies with a German Sheppard, now they wanted to get rid of her, Mia came into our lives, she was so scared, she would just sit in the comer and do all her business right there, it was then that we realised that she had been chained up and didn't know what it was to run free, I would drag her to the furthest point of the garden, let her go and she would run back to her corner, it took many weeks but I finally got hertowalkaround on her own. A zoo in Mouldersdrift where I had spent time helping with their wolves was forced to

close down, so we went in and removed all the wolves and brought them out here. Apache, an old wolf was a legend in his own right, he was the father of Kia, a lot of people had come to know him, we also got his brother Arrowak, he was just as friendly as Apache but had always been in an enclosure at the back and not seen by many people which was rather sad as he loved people. Ashak, an amazing wolf became out diplomat, he is the wolf that we take out to shows so that people can get to meet a real wolf. We got a call from Save-a-Pet in PE about two young wolves that were starving to death as the wouldn't eat, we went down to pick them and came back with twelve wolves, Lushka was the alpha female of her pack, she became the face of our wolf rescue, we then went down to collect another thirteen and came back with thirty seven. This was the beginning of the wolf rescue. Since then we have collected wolves from CT, Durban, Bloemfontain, Ventersdorp, Britz and mainlyGauteng. There were many times that we were building the enclosures while I was on the road, I had to rely on two labourers and my wife busy telling them what I was telling her, those were long days for all of us, everything coming together as we drove into the gates, there were times when Teneile my daughter and I would just stop on the side of the road and just pass out from exhaustion, sleep for an hour and then drive on, this while they were putting up the enclosures. Today we get calls from all over the country about wolf rescue, advice on how to keep a wolf as a pet as they already have one and soon.

What we do today could never be done with out the help of the local farming community who give us all their dead cows, which we skin, cut up and then freeze, we then give the wolves hand size chunks of meat, we also get chickens from the local chicken houses. A lot of people ask me about the name, "Husky Romi", well Romiwas my first husky, he inspired all of this and I constantly tell the wolves that they are only here because of the huskies. Today we have twenty five huskies and one hundred and fifty three wolves. We are on a sterilization program, as we get money we sterilize the female~


My Name is Romi (A Tribute) Larry and I go back seven years. I was a young husky pup, who just like lots of my kind was dumped at a pet shop. A nice Bulgarian lady bought me and took me home. One day I ran away, a long way away to the house next door where I found Larry. He played with me until the lady's son came looking for me and took me home. I could hear Larry go running every morning and all I wanted to do, was run with him. When I was six months old I could jump over the wall and play with Larry. One day he asked my person if he could take me running with him. That was only the beginning; I would spend the whole day with Larry and then go home for supper. One day my person said to Larry that she felt that I loved Larry more than them and she felt that I would be happier with him. Larry loved me and we were meant to be together, we where good for each other. We would go running every morning up Jacaranda Road, Olivedale so that the kids could say hello to me. I made Larry feel very proud. Larry bought a mate for me called Annie, a beautiful caramel and white husky. We had a litter just as Larry's kids left to go to New Zealand. Larry and I started sharing our lives with people and letting them come around to see the pups. We had taken in another husky and Annie's brother Russ had come to join us so the pack was growing. Every morning Larry took us all running. He came to be known as the "Husky Man". Larry decided to keep one of my sons "Artax". Later Annie had a second litter of four pups and we kept two boys, Bastion and Paikea

We started to take in more huskies when they needed a safe place to live. Larry would say, "If you have seven what's eight, nine, ten and so on ...". Larry brought my daughter Nikita from our first litter back, by getting together with Thea . As she came to share Larry's passion for huskies and was there when Larry had to go away. She helped with feeding and giving us our medication. Larry and Thea started to discuss how they could take all the good that we generated with people and turn it into a centre for rescued huskies and people. I have been a big inspiration to them, by doing for others what Larry and I started out doing a long time ago. By offering a safe haven for unwanted huskies and wolves we offer to a lot to people out there, who need our help or who just want a friend, and the rest is history. More about Romi When Larry and I started this journey, Larry said that he wanted to make me the most famous husky if not the world at least in South Africa, That's right we now have our own company that is dedicated to looking after abandoned huskies and wolves looking for a place to live. I now have a range of short bread, biscuits, chocolates and a farm named after me, we lave lots of people come to visit us and lots of children come out to the farm and spend their free time with us the huskies and the wolves, not bad for a

A lot of the wolves are named after people who have passed away, some have passed away from dreaded illnesses, we use these wolves as a reminder that a lot can be prevented if we are just aware, one wolf carries the name, Nellie, Anel van Rooy was a beautiful young woman from Reitz, we named the young wolf Anel, but she wouldn't respond to the name, one day Ansie and Bruwer, Anel's parents came to meet the wolf, as they walked into the enclosure, the young wolf looked up and as Ansie called out the name Nellie the young wolf ran straight to her and jumped into her arms, Ansie stood up and passed the wolf to Bruwer saying to Nellie, dis jou pa, it was like she had known them all her life. Some of the wolves are named after other people who have died in an accident, this is a constant reminder as to why we should always tell the one we love that we love them, we never get the chance to tell them again. What about me... , I'm nothing, I'm just a guy who has a passion for animals and decided to concentrate on huskies and wolves, without them I would just be Larry, I'm the omega, the protector, my strength comes from the pack..

Our Social and Labour Plans (SLP) funded out of a dedicated Fund of Community Human Resources Programme successfully delivered maths and science laboratories at Vaal Reefs Technical High School in Matlosana and Goso Forest Junior Secondary School in Lusikisiki, in the Eastern Cape recently. Vaal Reefs Technical High School in Matlosana has a historical association with AngloGold Ashanti having been one of our previous mine schools. AngloGold Ashanti, represented by Simeon Mighty Moloko, Senior Vice President Sustainability, handed over the completed maths and science laboratories to the Provincial Department of Education. In receiving the school the North West MEC for Education, Mme Wendy Matsemela. She remarked that the day was an important occasion as government cannot do it alone. It is only through partnerships like this one that we can address the imbalances and tremendous backlog burdening our education system and other sectors. This project was given with a cheerful smile. Let us receive it with an open heart and ensure that it effects the change that it is supposed to influence through developing and equipping learners with the necessary skills," she said. "We, as the North West Department of Education, are so proud of what AngloGold Ashanti is doing in our communities. We are here today to witness the commitment made by the company," she concluded .

Through this facility, which will not only benefit the pupils at Goso Forest Junior Secondary School but will serve as a satellite facility to other surrounding schools, we hope to help support students studying life sciences at an elementary age thus laying a strong foundation and igniting interest in the science and engineering field at an early age. We hope that this facility will produce students that will succeed to be leading engineers who will contribute meaningfully towards our country's economy." POTCHEFSTROOM Een van die eerste probleme wat die Potch-Tlokwe Sakekamer geldentifiseer het, is die vullis wat in ons strate is. Alhoewel dit geen maklike probleem was om op te los nie, is die 1ste fase van die "Maak Potch Mooi" veldtog reeds in Junie 2012 gei:mplimenteer deur Rudo van Heerden, Sameroeper: Gemeenskapsdienste Maak Potch Mooi. As 'n vurige voorstaander vir 'n mooier en groener Potchefstroom, het Rudo, wat ook eienaar is van Willows Property Group, nie net van ons parke onder sy vlerke begin neem nie, maar het hy ook die Trollie-Projek geloods.

In 'n skoner omgewing kan individue en besighede lekkerder werk en woon en Rudo wil graag Potchefstroom weer so mooi kry soos Potch se prentjies op Google. Die sekondere voordeel tot die projek is die werkverskaffings agter dit. Al ons trollie personeel was voorheen werkloos vir meer as 'njaar en wat gesinne het waarvoor hulle moet sorg, van tussen 4 tot 7 persone. So buiten ' n skoner Potchefstroom, le die lekker van hierdie projek verseker ook in die verskil wat in gesinne se lewens gemaak word. Hierdie is Santi, wat saam met haar man en vennoot prinsipale van Harcourts Eiendomme Potchefstroom is, se storie van haar pad na herstel en wat vrouwees vir haar beteken:

Vir Santi het die stadige pad na herstel vir haar begin met die klein dingetjies: Haar man Pieter wat haar met soveel respek en deernis behandel het. Vriendinne wat by haar voete gesit het of haar gevoer het as sy skaars bewus was van hulle teenwoordigheid. Haar kinders wat elkeen op sy manier probeer het om haar te ondersteun. Haar dokter wat vir haar 'n baba hondjie voorgeskryf het. Haar troetelkind wat vir haar 'n reuse polkakol rubber badeend persent gegee het om haar op te beur.

"Na wat gebeur het besef ek net dat elke vrou 'n innerlike krag het wat ons nie moet onderskat nie". Santi vertel dat sy ten spyte van wat gebeur het, voordat sy haarself toegelaat het om uitmekaar uit te val, twee van haar seuns bymekaar geroep het om te sorg dat die boodskap van die aanval op die regte manier aan haar ouers, ander kinders en aan Pieter wat in die hospitaal was, oorgedra word . Sy het haar seun Hennie gevra om haar jongste dogter Simone by die PUK te gaan oplaai en haar dadelik huis toe te bring sodat sy self vir haar kan vertel wat met haar gebeur het. "Toe ek my rna sien het ek dadelik besef dat iets groats fout is." Simone het, na Santi haar vertel het, oorweldig op haar rna se skoot neergesak en die res van die dag haar rna se hand vasgehou. "Ek onthou dat ek na die mediese ondersoeke op 'n stadium oorstelp met klere en al saam met my rna in die bad geklim het om haar te probeer troos. " Vir Santi was dit regtig 'n moeilike en lang pad om beter te word . Daar was dae wat sy die hele dag, asof in 'n waas, in haar gunsteling stoel in die sitkamer gesit het. Die vrees wat haar omvou het, was oorweldigend. Sy was nie Ius vir eet nie en die antiretrovirale medikasie wat sy moes drink het haar baie siek gemaak.

"Die prys van hierdie aanval op my en eintlik op ons hele gesin sal altyd te groot wees. Daar is 'n stuk van ons lewe gesteel wat ons nooit kan terugkry nie, maar daar het 'n dag gekom dat ek besef het dat al het hierdie man

Santi se: "Ek het 'n ontsaglike deernis met ander slagoffers van verkragting en het besluit om my pad na herstel met ander te deel. Ek kan met empatie luister na ander slagoffers van verkragting en hulle deur die trauma van 'n uitkenningsparade en hofsaak probeer bystaan . Ek kan vroue motiveer om sterk te staan in moeilike tye en hulle oortuig dat God ons elkeen so liefhet en dat ons nie hoef toe te laat dat ons vertrap word nie." "Na alles kan ek met oortuiging se dat die lewe om soveel meer as aardse besittings gaan en dat die Genade van God so groat is." Santi het onlangs die rubber eend wat haar in moeilike tye herinner het aan die liefde waarmee dit gegee is, vir klein Magdalene persent gegee om haar te help om die trauma van haar rna se verkragting te verwerk .


Sina Mosesane, 'n enkelouer en huiswerker wat in Ventersdorp grootgeword het, maar wat vanaf 1998 in Greenfields Uitbreiding 7 lkageng woon, ken ook die pyn van verkragting. Dit het sowat 11 maande gelede net na 9 die aand gebeur terwyl haar twee oudste dogters nog om die hoek by vriende TV gekyk het. Haar kerel was vir die naweek Mafikeng toe en haar jongste dogter, die agtjarige Magdalene was reeds in die bed. Sy het 'n klop aan die deur geantwoord toe die indringer homself in haar huis in gedwing en haar ten aanskoue van klein Magdalene verkrag het. Magdalene het ten spyte van die feit dat dit buite danker was in die strate in gehardloop om hulp te soek. "Dit was 'n vreeslike erg tyd in my lewe. Ek was nie Ius om te eet nie en kon glad nie slaap nie. Daar was die hele tyd stem me in my kop en ek het nie eintlik omgegee wat van my of my kinders word nie." Om dinge erger te maak het haar kerel haar kwalik geneem vir wat gebeur het en die verhouding beeindig . Haar twee oudste dogters was baie besorg oor hulle rna maar het glad nie geweet hoe om haar te help nie en arme Magdalene het haar so van alles om haar onttrek dat sy byna heeltemal ophou praat het. Sina het glad nie eers kans gesien om in haar eie huis te bly nie en vir 'n paar dae elke aand by haar vriendin Lydia gaan slaap. Gelukkig is haar verkragter gearresteer maar dit het nie regtig gehelp om die vrees wat elke oomblik van die dag deel van haar lewe was te keer nie. Ook vir Sina het die ondersteuning van 'n vriendin 'n groat verskil gemaak. Lydia het elke dag voor en na werk 'n draai by Sina kom maak, vir

haar kos gebring en haar probeer help. Hann van Childline het haar getrou elke week besoek. Sy het ook vir haar kos gebring en moeite gedoen om met haar dogters te gesels om hulle te probeer help. Dit is juis Hannie wat vir Sina gevra het of sy kan reel dat sy vir Santi Britz, wat ook 'n slagoffer van verkragting is, kan ontmoet. Volgens Sina was sy glad nie Ius vir enige praatjies nie, maar het maar gegaan. Sy het 'n hele paar keer met Santi gesels en kart voor die hofsaak ook vir Magdalene saamgeneem. 44

Sy het vir haar verduidelik dat sy nou beter is en dat sy graag vir Magdalene die eend as geskenk gee om haar ook te herinner dat daar nog baie liefde in die wereld is. Dit het vir Sina baie beteken om met 'n ander slagoffer en oorwinnaar van verkragting te praat. "Ek het besef dat my hart, my eie hart is en my kop my eie kop. Ek kan self besluit waar my oe kyk en ek hoef nie toe te laat dat enige iets my gees verander nie. My huis is myne en iets wat gebeur het hoef dit nie van my af weg te vat nie." Volgens Sina gaan dit baie, baie beter met haar en Magdalene. Sy werk weer en Magdalene kan weer lag en speel. "Ek bid nog elke dag dat dit wat met my gebeur het kleiner in my lewe word en dink gereeld aan die vrouens wat gehelp het se woorde. Ek moes leer om na verkragting 'n oorwinnaar in plaas van 'n te word. "

Boerekos with a twist are at the order of the day There is a place in the Free State that will touch your heart like no other. A place with more beauty, tranquillity, serenity and Godly presence than you ever imagined possible. It is a place where weary souls can recharge; the inspiration-ridden can find limitless new resources and life's burdens somehow seem more bearable after a weekend's retreat. Moolmanshoek Private Nature Reserve is the quintessential family adventure weekend destination and the epitome 4x4 driving pleasure. Those who haven't been admit to it being a gap in their "education", and agree it is one of South Africa's best kept secrets. Nothing however completely prepares one for the spectacle that is Moolmanshoek. The nearer one gets to the actual farm, the more spectacular the scenery becomes. Postcard pictures of horses in green pastures with yellow sandstone mountains, the bluest skies and whitest clouds pops up all around you. Before arriving at the gates to the picturesque farm, you know that you are in for a weekend of manic photography. Every corner just seems to make another perfect picture. Guests are welcomed by the hearty Nel family, the privileged custodians ofthis 3 300 hectares of the breath-taking valley studded with more than 300 free roaming horses and various game including swart wildebeest, zebra, springbuck, blesbuck, eland, gemsbok. There are also more than 230 bird species. The valley is encircled by the Witteberg Mountains. The upper parts of the mountains consist of Drakensberg basalt - a volcanic rock. Below the basalt lies Clarens Sandstone - a relatively soft rock formation.

This was deposited before the basalt outflow as sand dunes during a very dry period in the earth's history. The entire valley was declared a South African Natural Heritage Site in 1994. The luxury accommodation on the farm varies tremendously. Some rooms have sunny stoepkamers with a view on the dam , while the family rooms and luxury suites overlook green meadows where horses graze tranquilly. There is also a honeymoon suite and a private rondawel. No matter where you look, another post card setting appears - with herds of springbuck, wildebeest and zebras decorating the terraces below the sandstone mountains. True to the Nel family's culinary reputation, dinner and breakfast is a splendid affair. Boerekos with a twist are at the order of the day and the ambiance of the old farmhouse at night is hard to beat. Moolmanshoek is renowned for its 4x4 trail, which has been voted "Top 10 4x4 Trail in the Country" by Drive Out magazine for four years. It's easy to see why. Wiesman Nel, Moolmanshoek's very own horseman guides the vehicles over the rocky mountain passes on horseback - adding to the American movie-like experience. The Langesnek trail is a 10 km route that takes more than three hours to navigate. It starts off where overlanders have to traverse a wetland area, navigate over rock plates and then follow a short, steep, rough climb to the plateau, where panoramic views of the surrounding mountains can be seen. Throughout the drive, historic sites are

pointed out, such as an old mill and a washing place up in the mountains where the women of old use to come to do their laundry. The view from the top is sublime. Natural dams and rivers are decorated with herds of multi-coloured horses . Alternating grasslands and rock plates, which eventually turn into a moon-like landscape, really tests the skills and nerve of 4x4 drivers (and their guides). All of this however seems in preparation of the extremely steep decent at the end of the trail that again leads back to the flatter areas and then back to the tranquil gardens around the original sandstone farm house. After a morning's offroading, lunch can be enjoyed in the forest, where after guests usually depart for a leisurely horseback ride through a spectacular part of the farm the Nel family calls the Serengeti. Other adventure activities families can indulge in, include high ropes, abseiling, mountain biking and fly fishing. Those with a more docile disposition can enjoy the day walks, two-day hikes or the game drives. And if you simply want to do nothing, kick off your shoes and relax under a tree with a book while the children explore the farm on their own. A weekend at Moolmanshoek is just what the doctor ordered.
