Hi there!

A

new

beginning...

There is just something about compiling a new edition of a magazine that gives one a feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning. It has been a very long time since our previous edition of Devoted. Based on the previous feedback we received from you we have changed the look of Devoted. I hope that you will enjoy the new design that reflects our new image.

I hope that her story (page 4) will inspire all to take a step to make a difference in the lives of others. There are a number of worthy programmes and causes where you can make a difference and impact the lives of others in a positive way. We as believers have to get involved in these programmes and do our part. If everyone contributes, we will make a difference and together we can do so much more. Read also the story on page 13 to see how you can make a difference to poverty in our communities. I want to invite you to tell us about a person who has made a huge difference in your life or the lives of others. Devoted is the platform to recognize them and honour them for what they are doing.

We would love to get your feedback on the new look and content. Please send your comments to:

editor@devotedmag.co.za

Ps. At Boshoff writes (pg 3) about a new life and explains that the devil will continue to remind us of our past and our previous mistakes to distract us from our purpose. Ps. At also tells us that to overcome past mistakes we have to stop defining our identity through negative things that have controlled our lives and we have to embrace the new life that God has given us. God not only forgives, He forgets. We have to stop reminding Him of our past and start to remind Him of our future.

There is something so delightful, so magnificent, about Turkey. And for many, its strength lies in its vibrant culture and significance to Christian history. The history of Turkey, also known as Anatolia and Asia Minor, is as ancient as humankind. It is for good reasons that Turkey (Anatolia) is titled the cradle of Christianity and thousands of religious pilgrims from all over the world still visit Turkey. Devoted now also offers its readers the opportunity to see for themselves what the rave is all about. We will be introducing our first Devoted tour to Turkey, the other Holy Land.

Devoted readers have so much to look forward to. The Devoted team understands the power of the written word (see page10) and how it can transform the world we live in. Therefore, we will continue to provide you with only good news because it helps our readers through difficult times, and gives them the confidence to face the future. Like before we will continue to give you articles that will help build strong relationships. We will also give timely articles to help you make sense of the world out there. We will cater for the spiritual and emotional needs of our readers that form part of everyday life. We will also endeavour to give you (with the help of experts) the Bible’s solutions for the difficulties you may face.

We have compiled an exclusive tour for our readers where you can experience Turkey in style and comfort. Read more about this authentic tour on page 30 and contact me if you are interested in a tailormade tour to Turkey. I hope that you will enjoy this new beginning. May you be blessed when you place Jesus first, far above everything else this year and everyday thereafter! And, may you remember that when you are blessed, you have to continue to bless others, for we are blessed to be a blessing!

From now on we will feature an article on people who inspire us. In this issue we have none other than Ma Boshoff, mother of senior pastor At Boshoff. I did not have the honour to meet her in person, but the stories our readers tell about her shows that she is a woman of substance. It seems that her imprint on Bloemfontein over the years has been nothing short of amazing! She is described, among others, as disciplined, hardworking and she has a natural ability to draw people to her.

Devotion

A new life and a fresh start A caterpillar may look at a butterfly in flight and admire how beautiful it looks. The truth is that he is a butterfly in disguise. You are a little Jesus in disguise - a little anointed one. You are the most beautiful person alive on planet earth. You are the greatest personality – all that needs to take place is for you to discover yourself so that you can become what God wants you to be. You are a brand-new person.

Most people feel bad about themselves because they make mistakes. But you have to come to understand that mistakes are part of life. There is not one person who can claim that he or she has not made a mistake. We often beat ourselves up over mistakes and allow Satan to burden us with guilt and shame and condemnation. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 CORINTHIANS 5: 17). There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (ROMANS 8: 1). Satan will try to remind you of your past, but do not listen to him. He will use the world system and the carnality of this world to influence your mind to bring segregation and division. But if you are in Christ Jesus, you have made a new, fresh start; you are in a place of victory, significance and acceptance where you can do all things. Even if your parents abandoned you as a child, God accepts you; there is wholeness for you in your position in Christ Jesus. Christ came to heal the broken-hearted. I have seen people come to God who used drugs for many years, and God has given them a new soul. God promises to restore your soul and to give you a new identity. Nothing is impossible with God, but to find our identity in Christ we have to place ourselves in the Word of God – in what God says about us. It is impossible to serve God through our own understanding; we have to serve God based on the principles in His Word. When we come to Christ, we have to die to everything that has controlled us up to that point – our culture, traditions, norms, values, feelings and desires and even our failures and mistakes. Instead of defining our identity through these things, we have to embrace the new life that God has for us, through a relationship with Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit, to find a new, true identity in Christ. (From the book: "Live a Yes Life" (2008))

Inspiration

M a Boshoff is the mother of Ps At Boshoff, senior pastor of the Christian Revival Church. She lives in Bloemfontein and is well-known for her kindness and for the Christian relief programs and projects she founded to help children and the poorest of the poor in the immediate communities.

Stories of triumph over adversity exist in all fields and walks of life, and Ma Boshoff is one such example. She emerged from hardship as a leader and role model. She has gone through 18 operations, of which nine were back operations. She is literally a woman full of steel, yet, it is her strength, tenacity and passion for the work of God that makes her a real woman of steel. She just keeps on going when nothing and nobody else does! As I was welcomed into her home, I sensed that serving comes naturally to her. There is a passion in her voice that lights up her eyes when she shares her stories about the ministries she is involved in. Coming from the business world, she never dreamt this is where God would place her. Yet, now she only follows the dreams God has for her and would never wanted anything differently. “I have so much I still want to do; I feel like a 16year-old in a 70-something-year-old’s body,” she says about her passion for the ministry. Through it all she keeps the perspective that she is merely serving God by loving and caring for those who needs it the most.

"I have so much I still want to do; I feel like a 16-year-old in a

“Me Ma Sopo” emphasises that the food provided is secondary to the message that each person is valuable and special. Looking them in the eye and having a message of hope, acceptance and reminding them how valuable and special they are – that is what matters most! This approach has built trust and many of the adults who were helped through the feeding scheme now work as volunteers. The Pethoho ministry has expanded into a number of other projects over the years, all of them growing from strength to strength under the watchful and tender eyes of our Ma Boshoff. The Sunday schools and cell structures ensure that the more than 12 000 children are receiving ministry throughout the squatter camps. The Community Children’s Church (C3) ministry is growing and involves children not only in terms of salvations but true discipleship and teachings in the Bible. The C3 truck visits the different areas and the Word is spread, the message of God’s love, forgiveness and grace is made real by kids for kids. Needy children have become volunteers and the youth are making this possible! Ma Boshoff believes it is this success of the outreach programs that makes it all worth the effort. Ma Boshoff has a passion to help the most vulnerable in our societies. Over the years she has been providing love and attention to thousands of abandoned babies and orphans. She created a model of a home that accommodates a mother and also men with the heart of a father who need to step up as role models for our generation. These mothers and fathers then look after 6 children and function as a family unit. The long-term goal is to have homes like these throughout greater Bloemfontein, providing a safe haven for at least 300 to 400 children.

70-something-year-old’s body" Through personal relationships she was made aware of some of the core needs of the vulnerable children and their families in her community. A casual visit to a small school prompted her to identify various opportunities for empowerment and sustainable social change. This birthed the vision of the feeding scheme to help starving children. This all started with a big pot under a shed behind the church and just kept growing. Today the feeding scheme helpers make more than 1 350 litres of soup daily (that is approximately 4 000 cups a day) at the Pethoho centre, situated on the outskirts of the informal settlement in Bloemfontein. The ministry is aimed at bringing hope and transformation to the unemployed. The vision is to uplift and transform the community not only by supplying food, clothes and blankets, but to teach Christian values and morals and in doing so, cut down on crime.

Inspiration

T his remarkable woman has so many talents, skills and

innovative ideas to sustain and help build her projects. Over a period of time she has been collecting materials that others have discarded, such as tiles, stones, glass and bricks. When the baby house, Talitha Cumi, started, a wall with these materials was erected as a testimony of how God takes broken pieces and builds a beautiful picture of love! It also serves as a symbolic reminder that the abandoned babies can find refuge in the safe home where God’s love is ministered.

Ma Boshoff encourages others to take one small step to make a difference in the lives of the needy and poor. Through her networks she makes it possible for us to contribute, to support, educate and uplift children.

Ma Boshoff has a passion to help the most vulnerable in our societies.

Despite years of strenuous physical, emotional and spiritual work, Ma Boshoff remains unstoppable. Though she has suffered from numerous ailments, she always returns to work, and to those who receive her compassion and care. Her zeal and works of mercy know no boundaries.

How can you help? Volunteers are needed to help with the children and support the feeding schemes founded by Ma Boshoff. Donations and contributions of any kind are also welcome. This will help to sustain the lifesaving work Ma Boshoff and her brave team carry out every day. At the back of the CRC churches there are containers where church goers can place tinned foods, clothing and other contributions. This way we all can help make a difference! by Gillian Lombard

Getting to know Jesus Gillian Lombard wrote about God in the previous edition of Devoted under the heading: Getting to know God. In this edition we are putting the spotlight on Jesus, son of God. The birth of Jesus was supernatural, one of a kind, a miracle, unforgettable. Jesus’ mother Mary had favour with God and was chosen to bear the King. Luke 1:28 states: The angel went to her and said “Greetings you are highly favoured. The Lord is with you". Verses 30-31 also confirm: "Do not be afraid Mary, you have found favour with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus". This scripture teaches us that Jesus did not have a human father, if He had, He would have inherited the sin and infirmities that all men have. Since He was conceived by the Holy Spirit He stands as the one man who comes pure from the hand of God. Isaiah prophesied 700 years before Christ that He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). An elderly Simon was told by God that he would not die until he saw God’s mission. Simon blessed Jesus and predicted He would bring light to the Gentiles. (Luke 2:32) Wise men, influential men, honoured Jesus’ birth and came to worship Him. Jesus was filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon Him. When Jesus reached the age of 12, Mary, Joseph and Jesus journeyed to Jerusalem for the annual feast of the Passover. As Joseph and Mary were returning home they realized Jesus was not with them. After searching for three days they found Him in a temple sitting amongst teachers – listening to them, asking those questions and teaching them.

Jesus went through towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the Kingdom and healing every kind of disease and sickness. Jesus had compassion for people. He felt the crowds were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He therefor gave his disciples instructions to go preach to the lost sheep of Israel (Mathew 10:6). Jesus was sinless. He never did anything wrong. Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and men. Though He was tempted to sin many times, He never committed sin. His enemies tried to trap Him continuously and cause Him to sin, but they were not successful. Jesus was the only perfect man who ever lived. He revealed the will of His Father, taking upon Himself the demands of human nature and identified Himself completely with mankind. When we focus on Jesus we must go beyond His physical life and consider that He is the Son of God. While on earth Jesus performed many miracles: He raised people from the dead, He took a few loaves of bread and fish and multiplied them to serve thousands and He cured the demon possessed and healed the sick and cripple. All power was given to Him.

The principles, by which Jesus Christ lived, are principles on which our universe is built • He was humble • He was meek • He was just and good • He was kind and merciful • He strived for peace Christ was completely unselfish. His life of prayer and love was for others. Even as Christ hung on the cross His cry was not for Himself but for others. Father forgive them for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34). Christ’s mind was so centred in goal that it stayed like that to the last minute of His life. One of the most important factors which Jesus showed us is love. The Jesus, who was and is love, calls you to follow in His footsteps. God needs to live within our hearts. If you desire to follow in His footsteps and reflect His love then God must fill our thoughts. Only love will lead you to the Father’s heart. Christ has set a high standard for us, but if we open up our heart to the Holy Spirit and desire to be dedicated, then the Spirit will make it possible for us to reach Jesus’ standard.

Father forgive them for they know not what they do. - Luke 23:34 Philippians 2 vs 2-12 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy completely by being likeminded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain, conceit but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interest, but also to the interest of others.

Prison ministry

The written word is powerful - It can save a soul by Gerda Potgieter

The Ministry of Jesus Christ is based on the written word. God transforms the hearts of people through His Word. (Luke 24:44, 46-47) The greatest invention of all time is the printing press. It was invented around 1440. How fitting that the first work printed on Gutenberg's first press was the Bible! According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia, the Gutenberg Bible was the first book produced on a printing press anywhere in the world. The written Word is far more than idle marks on paper. It is not meant simply to be read, but to be lived. Written words are powerful. It has the power to transform the world we live in and it inspires us. Many people believe written words also have magical powers. Be it as it may, it influences how we think and thoughts determine our actions. There is a powerful connection between the words we use and the results we get.

But prison ministry also benefits the volunteer. It does wonders for revitalising their spiritual lives as it offers unique opportunities for personal spiritual growth. It is indeed a joyful experience to lead a person to Christ and see him start his life over in ways productive to society and pleasing to God. Prison ministry forms a big part of the mandate of many churches. However, despite the direct Biblical mandate most believers, unfortunately, do not become involved in prison ministry. It could be that most people shy away from prison ministry because they envision engaging with dangerous people or killers. But in reality it is unlikely that they will ever become involved in either of these, or any similar situation.

From its beginning, the printed word was used as a means to spread the Gospel. Over the years it became clear that the printed Word can have a huge impact in the life of an inmate in prison.

What is the role of the written Word, especially in its printed form, in the prison environment and can it play a role in saving a soul? I strongly believe that it can. It was reported that inmates often profit from doing Bible studies (sometimes by ways of correspondence) as they have plenty of time to devote to this.

Prison populations, across the world and in our country, grow larger and larger by the day. Very often people come out of prison worse than when they went in. Statistics have shown that roughly 80% of inmates return to prison after release. Many commit more crimes, return to prison, and get stuck in the revolving doors of crime, prison and release. Prison ministry provides the opportunities and means for making a difference.

While in jail a prisoner will most likely spend more time thinking and reading than he / she normally would have done. A prisoner has an abundance of time and not many constructive ways of using it. These inmates are so bored sometimes that they will read whatever you give them. This provides the ideal opportunity to spread the Gospel and to change the life of others by giving them Christian literature that will enrich their lives and lead them to Jesus Christ.

Prison ministry helps prepare prisoners for re-entry into society. It helps them to understand that they can still be an important part in society. It could be instrumental to help them turn away from crime by the grace of Jesus Christ.

It is clear that Christians have the authority to become involved in prison ministry in its Scriptural essence. However, this does not mean that you literally have to go into a prison. It simply means that believers should be involved in prison ministry in some capacity.

The Biblical mandate for prison ministry is clear in God’s Word (Matthew: 25:31-40); and Jesus Himself is our example (Isaiah 42:7; Isaiah 61:1; 1 Peter 3:19). The reason why we do prison ministry is to share the unconditional love of Jesus Christ and to present the Gospel in such a way that inmates will embrace it. This could lead them to receive Christ as their Saviour.

10

The Devoted team is dedicated to make a difference and to support prison ministry. We can also assist other believers to play an important role in prison ministry, to help an inmate function more positively within the prison environment and to help prepare them for re-entry into society. One way we can focus on declaring the Word of God and the Testimony of Jesus Christ is to ensure that Devoted is distributed regularly to inmates in prison so that they can become acquainted with the Christian lifestyle. To be able to do this we need to print additional copies of all issues.

Prison ministry

Why a believer should become involved in prison ministry: * Prison ministry has a direct Scriptural mandate. Read Matthew: 25:31-40; Isaiah 42:7; Isaiah 61:1; 1 Peter 3:19. * Prison ministry is one of the largest spiritual harvest fields as there are millions of inmates, many of whom are genuinely seeking change and stability in their lives. Chaplains can only minister to a fraction of the inmates in their care. They cannot do all the work themselves and do not have the time and resources for that. * False religions and cults are rife in prisons and we must get to prisoners first with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. * Prison ministry breathes new life into church evangelism and outreach programs, because spiritually hungry inmates usually come to the Christian volunteer in prison and often in huge numbers. * Prison ministry enhances worship as many prison volunteers receive a renewed vision for worship while attending church services behind the walls.

Rejoice

Rebirth in Christ

By Chrisna Hattingh

Someone once told me that the breath of a new born baby is the most wonderful smell. That baby has never eaten anything in his or her life, and this smell can be seen as the smell of true life, free of all worldly pollution. This explanation brings words like clean, heavenly, serene and free of all sins to mind. Luckily you can associate yourself with these words for a second time, after you have chosen to be reborn in Jesus Christ. Being reborn in Jesus Christ doesn’t mean that you are going to become a screaming baby again; it means that you will have a fresh start in life, with Jesus as your Saviour, Guide, Father and Friend. This means that you have chosen to repent of all your sins and to start living your life as God intended. Sure, it is going to be difficult because we are only human and sinful but with the help of Jesus Christ it is possible. In Paul Kroll’s article The miracle of rebirth, he writes: “We were born to be reborn. You and I are meant to experience the greatest life change of all – a spiritual one. God has designed us so we can share or participate in His divine nature.”

“We were born to be reborn. You and I are meant to experience the greatest life change of all – a spiritual one. God has designed us so we can share or participate in His divine nature.” Imagine sitting on the beach at dawn, a cool breeze sweeping through your hair. You take a deep breath of fresh air and it feels as if you can’t get enough of the birth of this new day surrounding you. In my mind that is what it feels like to be reborn in Christ. It is a rush that fills your mind, body and soul with the realisation that the Lord Jesus Christ, is our Saviour. The breeze that fills your lungs also comes with the promise that the God whom lives in that breeze will always be there to catch you if you fall.

Being reborn in Christ is not an easy thing, but if you give your mind, body and soul to Him and you trust Him with everything, He will never let you down. For this reason God sent us the Holy Spirit to help us understand Him better and to help us to stay on the right path, the path He has laid out for us. You have to let go of all the things in your past that held you back from belonging to Jesus one hundred percent and put your trust in Him. Even though He is almighty, He rejoices for every one of His children that finds their way back to His loving arms. In John 3:3 Jesus says to Nicodemus: Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God". Nicodemus then asked him how a person could be born if he is already an old man, and Jesus replied: "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit". (John 3:4-6) If you try and wrap your head around how big and awesome He is, you only remember how small you are But still we may speak with Him about anything, and the best part is that He can hear us. It is never too late to be reborn in Christ, He is sitting on the edge of His throne waiting for you to choose Him and to choose life.

Hope

Dynamic Women help Children The Dynamic Women for Children organisation was founded in 2008. This dynamic organisation is especially involved with Plot 177; an informal settlement in the Kameeldrift region, where they have already made a huge impact on the lives of specifically the vulnerable children. However, much help is needed to maintain the good work being done at these care centres. Currently twenty five families live in appalling conditions. Old pigsties were transformed into “living units” by simply adding a window, a door and a roof. Unfortunately, these humble units are rented to families (that can be regarded as the poorest of the poor) at high costs. The property does not have any running water and electricity is only available at certain times of the day for each family. Since 2012, twenty of the thirty four children from age three to thirteen of Plot 177 have been placed in the pre-primary and primary school in Kameelfontein. The children are transported to and from the school. In October 2012 a Dynamic Women for Children Private Care Centre was opened directly next to the school. After school care is now given to the learners. The focus of this organisation is to get the children out of their impoverished circumstances and to give them a chance in life. The children are provided with as much exposure as possible to get them to turn their heads and break the cycle of poverty. Teenage pregnancies are a huge problem. Most of the young mothers are between the ages of fifteen and sixteen. During school holidays all thirty four kids are taken care of at the care centre on a full-time basis. They are provided with three meals per day and they are sometimes taken on field trips. The volunteer teachers help the children on an individual basis to get their schoolwork up to date and in line with the school curriculum.

Dynamic Women for Children are dependent on donors to operate the care centre. The biggest expenses are food and fuel, to transport the children. The current vehicle is too small to transport all the children. They desperately need a 20+ seated bus. The care centre property is not owned by Dynamic Women for Children. The plan is to buy the property and to build a boarding school.

Donations of clothes, furniture, household appliances etc. can be delivered to Plot 177, Tamboti road, Spioenkop Kameeldrift East, or it can be collected from your home. We, at Devoted, believe that we can all do our part to help the children rise from their impoverished circumstances in order to give them a better chance to become independent, successful adults. Up to now the successes of this project have been phenomenal. All glory to God for the staff and members of Dynamic Women for Children for paying it forward. Health

Losing weight this season The healthy and sustainable way! by Patience O. Legoale

Most people usually become concerned about their body weight in the beginning of each year, after a period of over-eating and drinking. As Christian we should set an example of excellence to the rest of the world in every aspect of our lives.

Our bodies are the physical means which we have been given to present ourselves to the world as a witness to God's glory. Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV) to glorify God in the body: Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body… South Africa is a country with a large number of overweight people. The reality is that the number of people who are overweight due to medical problems is a very small minority. For the rest there are many other reasons why they are overweight, which could include overeating. And, being overweight or obese destroys a person’s life.

Being overweight impact on so many levels of our lives: • It is associated with premature death. • It increases the risk of various diseases such as Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Hypertension, Masculo skeletal, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, etc • It lessens our confidence and makes u less joyful. • It causes preliminary aging. • It impacts on the quality of our lives. • It ruins our Christian witness because it destroys our body, steals our energy and is a public proof of a lack of self-control.

14

As Christians we should set an example of excellence to the rest of the world in every aspect of our lives, including our bodies. In Proverbs 23:20 -21 it is stated: "Do not mix with winebibbers, or with gluttonous eaters of meat; for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty," …

The answer to dealing with common overweight could lie in understanding what overweight or obesity means and how to deal with it in a healthy and sustainable way.

Original art pieces done by South African artists such as:

Our weight is usually assessed according to actual mass in kilograms (kg) in relation to height in meter squared (m2). This is referred to as Body Mass Index (BMI) or Quetelet index. According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia, BMI refers to accessing how much an individual’s body weight departs from what is normal or desirable for a person of his/her height.

Petro Neal, Bosch, C Theys, C Tugwell, Dimitrov, Hentie Meyer, Jean Abrie and Many More

On average the adult weight is normal if BMI is within 20-25kg/ m2 for adults. Overweight is categorised as BMI 25-30kg/m2, obese 30-40kg/m2 is and above 40kg/m2 is categorised as severe obese. People who are overweight, obese and severely obese should consider losing weight until they are within their normal BMI. Therefore, the best option is to consult a dietician.

General rules for weight-loss: • Carbohydrates (especially simple carbohydrates) have to be avoided as well as protein high in fat. • Take note of the portion size as your portions may be bigger than is required by your body. • The frequency of eating may be too often, which is not recommended. • Your metabolism may be slow, therefore food accumulates in the body.

In our eat-and-run, massive-portion-sized culture, maintaining a healthy weight can be tough; and losing weight even tougher. Adding to the difficulty is the abundance of fad diets and “quick-fix” plans that tempt and confuse us, and ultimately fail. If you’ve tried and failed to lose weight before, you may believe that it’s just too difficult or that diets don’t work for you. And in one sense, you may be right: Traditional diets don’t work - at least not in the long term. But there are plenty of small, but powerful, changes you can make that do add up to lasting weight-loss success. The key is to create a plan that provides plenty of enjoyable choices, avoid common dieting pitfalls, and learn how to develop a healthier, more satisfying relationship with food. Environment

Why

GREEN

is good

Live a responsible life

By Gerda Potgieter

Embracing a greener lifestyle is about being conscious about the environment and the impact our actions have on our planet - to an extent that we want to make a difference. Green-thinking has taken over the world and the COP 17 conference on climate change brought the issue to the front, once again. To understand the concerns about the environment we need to have a broader look at why we should go green. Even if you do not consider yourself an environmentalist, we all have a responsibility for preserving our environment and we should strive to live greener. In order to understand this massive green world-wide movement it helps to understand why we need to be more aware of and start living in a way that has a positive impact on the environment in general. The extreme growth in human population has extreme social and environmental consequences. According to the United Nations World Population Prospects report the world population is currently growing by an enormous 74million people per year, with the most significant increase in the last 50 years. By 2050 it is estimated that 9billion humans will be living on planet earth! Overpopulation has a huge impact on the standard of living of people, the economy and the environment, among other things. Each human being needs basic resources. The world has limited natural resources, some of which are already depleted. Even if it was possible to distribute the world’s natural resources evenly among all, by 2050 people will only have 25% of the resources per capita that people in 1950 had. To add to that, the garbage that humans generates is enormous; and one of the greatest threats to future resources come from things we throw away every day. To avoid landfills taking over as the result of the trash that people generate you have to be environmentally conscious. This includes taking proper care of used household batteries and electronics. These items often contain dangerous chemicals that may, if sent to a local landfill, leak through the bottom barrier and pollute the groundwater. This can contaminate everything from the soil in which our food grows to our tap water. Many of these chemicals cannot be removed from the drinking water supply, or from the crops that are harvested from contaminated fields. The risks to human health are devastating.

16

The reality is that everything we do every single day impacts on the environment in either a good or a bad way. This is a scary thought and something to think about if we want to keep the world a better place to live in! As Christians we know all things must live in subjection to God’s rule and reign in our lives. God is the Creator and all things belong to Him. Leviticus 25:23 -24 clearly states: "The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with Me. And in all the land of your possession you shall grant redemption of the land". The environment affects us all and we need to apply a Christian worldview to the matter. If we hope to leave our children and grandchildren with the same standard of living we have enjoyed, we must preserve the foundation of that standard of living. Going green is a lifestyle and not the flavour of the month. We all have a role to play because we have all contributed to the current state of the environment. It is never too late to make a change for the best. Whether it is recycling, planting a tree or composting, try to do your part for a greener, healthier world. Better late than never!

Reasons why we should be going green: • The impact we have on the environment today is making a difference on the world of future generations. Most green technology is designed to reduce energy consumption and reuse existing resources. It is therefore also financially rewarding to go green. • It is better for your health and the health of your loved ones to go green as it was found that some unnatural substances cause cancer. • Our choices and our actions - individually and collectively - will contribute to the overall wellbeing or to the downfall of the environment. • If we keep on polluting the rivers, dams and lakes of this world we all soon will have to buy bottled water that is chemically cleaned or which is obtained from the seas and oceans. It will be very expensive. • Air pollution has caused an increase in the number of illnesses, allergies and asthma in people. • Fertilizers and chemicals poison plants and unfertile the soil. This leads to worse harvests, less food and eventually to hunger.

Testimony

God does know all about business! “I worked hard and played hard (as the New Year’s Eve parties testified), but my conscience gradually steered me in a different direction. God had a plan for my life …” (Nico van der Merwe, What does God know about business?)

“Heee-haaa !” my best friend Gerrit yelled as he plunged into the pool, following the stripper. It was New Year’s Eve, 1977, and a balmy summer’s evening. We used to have the best year-end parties in town with a lamb on the spit, draft beer, wine, music and dancing until the early hours of the morning. We were known for these parties among our friends and their friends, many of whom we only saw once a year. As the stripper started her act on our patio table, I watched the faces of my friends, eagerly awaiting the next piece of clothing to fly. Their wives’ faces, though, reflected utter dismay as they looked at their husbands. But, something new had to be devised for these parties every year—and the stripper seemed a good idea for this one. I stood to one side and watched the spectacle unfolding. And then, as if from nowhere, I heard a voice, “Tonight, you have gone too far.” I looked around, but there was no-one close by and I shrugged it off as my imagination … but the remark lingered in my mind until I finally began to ponder my life and ways as a young man. After six years of working day and night, I considered attending our local church on the odd free Sunday. The church had a new young pastor, whom we later befriended. We invited the pastoral couple to dinner one evening and he impressed me with his wisdom and insight. I accepted his invitation to join a small group of people for a prayer meeting on the following Saturday morning. The meeting was attended by six people only: the pastor, four ladies and me. We sat in a tiny office discussing various topics and then prayed about them. I was so nervous I could not pray out loud, let alone to Someone I hardly even knew! What really struck me was the sincerity of every single person in that little group. Listening to their prayers, I realized that they actually knew the Deity to whom they were praying; and it certainly appeared as though they had some kind of personal relationship with God. I intuitively knew that they had something I did not have … and I desperately wanted to share in this.

18

I knew that God’s Word had something to do with this relationship. Yet, whenever I read the Bible I could not understand why people raved about it, as it did not make any sense to me. It was literally a closed book. After the second or third prayer meeting, I plucked up the necessary courage to pray by mumbling a few words. I clearly remember my head spinning uncontrollably, as if in a tumble-dryer. I started attending church quite regularly.

Testimony

One Sunday evening, our pastor mentioned that many people wished to accept Christ into their lives, but that they felt like 14-year olds standing in the passage—no longer children, nor as yet adults. He invited members of the congregation to stand up if they were intent on committing or even recommitting their lives to the Lord, rather than remaining in “the passage”. That evening, I stood up for the first time and committed my live to Jesus Christ.

The year was 1980 and life would never be the same again …”

Medical aids and hidden costs 2 Corinthians 9:8: "…God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything; you may have an abundance for every good deed"

If you can honestly admit that you understand your medical aid and that you are aware of all the hidden costs, you are one of the privileged few. The so-called small print tends to get the better of us. When we consider which medical aid to take we make sure that the hospital benefit covers us according to our needs and that we have some day-to-day benefits. Our frustration mounts when we realise that we have to make additional payments.

These “hidden costs” are seldom clearly explained, hence the frustration.

original medicine has been on the market for a few years. Companies do not have to do tests and trials to develop a new product, the generic medicine is cheaper because it is “copied” from an existing product. There might be slight differences from the original, such as the raw material source, but it is negligible. In rare cases patients do not react positively to generic medicines and therefore requires the original or a new medicine. Medical aids usually pay in full for generic medicines, but should you use an original product only a portion, usually 70% is paid for. •

Dentistry One of the most costly medical expenses is dentistry. The majority of medical aids do not pay for dentistry. You might argue that I have never paid for any dentistry, but when you look closely you will notice that dentistry is paid from your savings, which is actually your money, and not from your major medical. Dentistry is mainly seen as cosmetic and only in extreme cases can it be argued that it has an impact on the wellbeing of the patient.

A few of the main costs to be aware of are: •

Co-Payments Unfortunately due to an environment where everyone wants a bigger piece of the cake, copayments were introduced to reduce unnecessary and excessive use of certain benefits. Co-payments can basically be seen as an amount paid by the member to enable him/her to enjoy these benefits.

Certain medical aids do cover a portion of basic dentistry, but once again you have to familiarise yourself with the exact benefits your medical aid offers. To manage costs you can negotiate rates with your dentist, always insist on a quote when specialised procedures are required.

There is usually a co-payment when scheduled for an MRI or CT Scan. Certain procedures also require a copayment, such as gastroscopies, angiograms, etc. In some cases the medical aid will allow co-payments to be paid from available savings or above threshold benefits, but it has to be clarified with your medical aid. Another co-payment that might apply is a co-payment when admitted to a hospital or day facility. •

Levies A levy usually refers to a short payment on medicines. Medical schemes compile formularies according to which they are willing to pay medicines. These formularies are applied to chronic medicines and other prescribed medicines. You will be able to manage these levies if you have familiarised yourself with formularies and limits applicable to your specific plan. Generic medicines play an integral part in managing levies. Generic medicines are developed when the

SPG (Self Payment Gap) and Thresholds Just writing these words gives me a chill down my spine. How can one define something that cannot be quantified or described? It is like a black hole…. When you choose an option with a SPG, the exact amount is disclosed, but somehow the amount never stays the same, it is never less but the gap has a bad way of “growing”. Words like: “Your savings have been depleted…” or “you have reached your gap…” is the last thing you want to hear when standing in a queue at a pharmacy. All benefits that reduce your SPG accumulate to your threshold. The threshold is the limit. amount of claims submitted and approved, that you have to reach before you can benefit from your medical aid again. Once you have reached the threshold, certain sublimits might apply, for example optometry.

The following will increase your SPG: o

Schedule 0 to 2 medicines; rather pay for these medicines separately.

o

Homeopathic medicines and vitamins.

Start re-evaluating your medical aid options as early as October each year for the following year.

Familiarise yourself with any co-payments.

Try to use generic medication. It is not dangerous or less effective.

Make sure your chronic medication is on the formulary or obtain approval.

Understand your SPG and threshold limits as well as any sub limits such as prosthesis, oncology, etc.

Investigate the option of insurance to cover any shortfalls, usually referred to as GAP cover, such as Trulogic, Dennis, etc.

Make provision for additional savings to cover unforeseen expenses, such as Momentum’s Health Saver.

Do not be afraid to negotiate rates, after all, you are paying!

Constantly read articles etc. to familiarise yourself with changes in the industry

Teen Talk

Soulmate Versus Cellmate By Vicki Fourie

Andy has no life of his own. He merely exists. He tends to fret and worry about those closest to him: His girlfriend, parents, friends, and even his sister. He does not want to be alone. He hates being alone! Whenever his friends wants to visit their other friends, he completely freaks out. It makes him wonder, ‘Am I not good enough for them anymore? Why do they want to make new friends?’ Every time his mother goes out shopping, he asks, ‘Why is she wasting her time with frivolous things? Am I not important to her?’ His whole world revolves around others. He cannot live without them. He is an example of a psycho. Well, not completely, but almost! Have you ever felt smothered in relationships? Are there a few Andys in your life? Are you an Andy yourself? Whatever the case may be, God intended for us to live life freely, without limits. God does not want us to feel overcrowded.

Are you independent?

He wants us to be free. To have space to be yourself. To just be. However, God intended for us to be surrounded by people. By friends, colleagues and family. But we tend to overdo it. We have to do everything with our family or friends. We cannot imagine going to the movies ALONE. We have a fear of being alone. We turn into Andys ourselves. Studies have shown that if one person spends too much time with just one other individual, they both burnt out. They grow prematurely in their beings and emotions. When couples spend all their time together it is actually considered unhealthy. The relationship becomes unnatural and practically forced. If you feel trapped in a relationship, it is time to step back and re-evaluate it. Do you spend too much time with your boyfriend, girlfriend, friends, parents, etc.? If you were stranded on an island, would you be able to cope on your own? Think of the movies Cast Away & Robinson Crusoe.

Or too dependant?

Do y ou ne ed with someon to be e all time? the

Teen Talk It is your responsibility to find out who you are as an individual. It is very dangerous to base your identity on the people around you. Once you have decided to step back and reevaluate your relationships, then you can go forward in life. In the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, there were a number of times when God withdrew. He was still fully present, but He would become quiet and wait. God is a gentleman; He does not force Himself upon us. He gives us the space to grow and breathe. He gives us a chance to realise who we are and also what is going on in our hearts. We can do exactly the same thing. Step back, give each other space, and watch how God reveals great things about who you are as a person – alone!

Here’s some tips to help you overcome this fear of being alone: Steps to take: 1.

3.

2.

First recognise that you are soul mates, not cellmates. Soul mates are people who give each other space. Cellmates, hence the name, are people who are trapped in a situation. They feel like they are in prison, and simply cannot get out. They feel trapped.

yourself, “Do we have to do everything together?” When you spend all your time together, you become a little too possessive (stalker ALERT!), clingy, and jealous. Are those traits showing up regularly?

Miss Deaf International 2010 1st Princess Motivational speaker at schools, functions & events

Talk it over. Do not attack each other. Stay calm! Sit down together somewhere, where there are no distractions or noises. Be appreciative of the fact that your friend (or girlfriend, boyfriend, parent, etc.) has always been there for you, no matter what. Then gently tell this person that you feel it is time to give each other a little space. Do not do it in a way that says, ‘I need space!’ Include your partner. ‘We both need space so that we can develop our full potential.’

Business

The Art of Networking By Karin Metz

Use the word “Networking” in any conversation and you receive a variety of responses. Especially after you have clarified that you are talking about Referral Networking or Relationship Marketing and not Network Marketing or Multi-level Marketing.

The business people nod their heads, knowing the value thereof. The introverts hang their heads, fearing the prospect thereof. The extroverts perk up their heads, immediately sharing their experiences and wisdom (or sometimes, the lack thereof!). I was often told while studying “it is not what you know, but who you know that will guide your success”. The challenge I faced was that I did not know HOW to get to know all the people I was suppose to know in order to help make things happen! Maybe you can identify with that? A survey of more than 2,200 people on bni.com revealed that 87% never had a college course that even mentioned networking. Yet, in another survey of more than 3,800 businesspeople, 73% said that they got most of their business through networking!

Maybe you are a born connector? Maybe you know a little, but would like to become better at networking? Or maybe just the idea sends shivers down your spine? To network effectively is an art. But it can be developed if you learn the skills required. Through reading, training and coaching anybody who chooses to, can become an expert networker.. The longer you are in business – or in life – the more you will understand the importance of a strong and credible network. Let 2012 be YOUR year of networking effectively, connecting people to people and enjoying the abundant blessings that follow a “Giver’s Gain” attitude and life style.

Anatolia (also known as Asia Minor) is titled the cradle of Christianity. It was here that followers of Jesus Christ were first called Christians by their Roman rulers. Early paganistic ritual gave way to Christianity but was later replaced by the Islamic faith of the invading Selcuks. Today, Turkey is visited annually by thousands of religious pilgrims from all over the world. The Apostle Paul, born in Tarsus, travelled through Southern and Western Anatolia three times, preaching and converting thousands. The Seven Churches are located in Western Turkey. They are seven major churches of Early Christianity, as mentioned in the New Testament Book of Revelations. "Churches" in this context refers to the community of Christians living in each city. The term does not merely refer to the building or buildings in which people gathered for worship. Today, this historic site mostly consists of ruins.

Day 03: Early morning, after breakfast you will depart on a morning cruise along the Bosphorus from where you will continue to the capital city of Turkey, Ankara. Here you will visit the Anatolian civilisation museum, and the Mausoleum of Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. You will overnight in Ankara.

Day 04:

Day 05:

Devoted invites you to travel with us to this second Holy Land. Refer to our advert for more detail on our Devoted-Turkey tours.

This is what you can expect from a typical Devoted Turkey tour:

Day 01: Day

You will arrive in Istanbul and be taken to the hotel where you will overnight. The day will be spent at your own leisure.

02: After breakfast you will enjoy a guided walking tour of the “Old City”, covering a large area overlooking The Golden Horn. You will stop at the Hippodrome and proceed to the Blue Mosque, named so because of its interior decoration consisting of 21,043 blue Iznik tiles. In the afternoon you will visit the Haghia Sophia, the Byzantine Cathedral constructed by Emperor Justinian in 326 AD. It is a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and a symbol of the “Golden Age” of the Byzantine Empire. You will also visit the Underground Cistern built by Justinian in 535 AD. Then you will drive to The church of Holy Saviour, containing breathtaking frescoes and mosaics dating from the 14th century. It is a remarkable example of Byzantine art. The tour concludes with a visit to the Grand Bazaar, a covered complex of alleyways containing 4000 shops of all descriptions. You will then return to your hotel, where you will overnight.

Day 06:

Early morning, after breakfast, you will depart for Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, and will spend most of your day on a driving tour. The tour will pass the salt lake. This part of Turkey consists of unique landscapes and underground cities carved from the region’s soft volcanic rock. This trip will allow some unique photo opportunities. This day will be dedicated to the discovery of the Cappadocia region. You will visit the underground city of Kaymakli. From here you will tour to Pasabagi and Derbent valley. You will then proceed to the Avanos Pottery Village, Camel Valley, and the Chimney Valley, set on the banks of the Red River. You will also visit the Pigeon Valley with its fascinating frescoed rock churches and chapels at Goreme Open-Air Museum: “Elmali Church, Saint Barbara Church, Carikli Church which depicts scenes from the life of Jesus, and descriptions of the saints who wrote the Bible. Photo stops will be made at Uchisar “castle” village, a fantasy-land of wonderful works of man and nature. The highlight of this day will be the visit to Konya, an ancient city in central Turkey, once known as Iconium. It is the site of one of the first church councils and one of the Apostle Paul’s missionary destinations. It was the capital of the Seljuk Empire from 1150 to 1300 AD. It is also the home of Rumi (Mevlana) the Sufi saint who founded the Whirling Dervishes. You will then drive to Pamukkale to visit the ancient city of Hierapolis and the thermal springs with calcium rich water creating shallow white basins and twisted stalagmites.

The ancient Greco-Roman and Byzantine city of Hierapolis was built on top of the white "castle" which is in total about 2,700 metres long, 600 metres wide and 160 metres high. It can be seen from the hills on the opposite side of the valley in the town of Denizli, 20 km away. Hierapolis-Pamukkale was made a World Heritage Site in 1988. You will overnight in Pamukkale.

Day 07: After breakfast you will drive to Laodicea Ad Lycum on

You will also visit Smyrna (modern Izmir). Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey, with more than 2.5 million people. It is known as the "Pearl of the Aegean" and is one of Turkey's most westernised cities. The city’s origins are believed to date back to 3 000 BC. The city had a large Christian population (including Greek Orthodox) until 1922. Most of them fled during the turmoil of the War of Independence.

the South bank of the Lycus River. The town was originally called Diospolis, "City of Zeus", and afterwards Rhoas. The building of Laodicea took place during 261-253 BC and it is ascribed to Antiochus II Theos. It was built in honour of his wife Laodice. The building was probably founded on the site of the older town. It was approximately 17 km west of Colossae, and 10 km south of Hierapolis. From a very early period the town was one of the chief seats of Christianity. Laodicea receives passing mention in the epistle to the Colossians. Today, Laodice is solely an archaeological site. The existing remains still attest to Laodicea’s former greatness. The ruins near Denizli (Denisli) are relatively well preserved. Its stadium, gymnasium, and theatres are well deserving of notice. Other buildings on the top of the hill, are full of interest; in the East, the line of the ancient wall can be distinctly traced to the remains of a gateway. There is also a street within the town, flanked by the ruins of a colonnade and numerous pedestals. The street leads to a heap of fallen ruins on the brow of the hill, about 200 metres outside the walls.

Places of interest include the St Polycarp Church (the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Izmir and the seat of the Catholic archbishop); the Archaeological Museum which houses artifacts from the Bayrakh Mound; and the famous Treasury (Hazine) – containing gold jewellery dating from the 6th - 3rd centuries BC. The Agora, central market of the Roman city of Smyrna dates back to the 2nd century AD. Several Corinthian columns with well-preserved capitols are still standing today and they are a part of a basilica. You will overnight in Kusadasi.

Day 09: Early morning you will drive to Pergamum (modern

Bergama). The great acropolis of Pergamum is one of the most dramatic sights to see. Places of interest include the Asklepion Sanctuary and the Altar of Zeus, which is said to be "the place where Satan has his throne" (Revelations 2:13). The altar was rebuilt in Berlin’s Pergamum Museum.

You will visit ancient Philadelphia, the seat of a Christian bishopric during Byzantine times, also referred to as the New Jerusalem. Few ruins remain at the site of ancient Philadelphia after an earthquake hit In 17 AD. A small theatre located at the northern edge of Toptepe Hill is all that remains of ancient Philadelphia. The next stop is Sardis, the capital city of the ancient Kingdom of Lydia. You will spend the night in Kusadasi. Sardis is East of Izmir, and is solely an archaeological site. A small village nearby is named Sart. Places that we will see include the Sardis Synagogue, the Temple of Artemis and the Byzantine Church.

Day 08: After breakfast you will visit Ephesus, or Efes.

Pergamum is home to the world's steepest theatre. It was constructed in the 3rd century BC. The theatre has 80 rows of seats and an estimated capacity of 10 000. The Red Basilica was originally a center of pagan worship and afterwards used as a church dedicated to St John.

Day 10:

The

Apostle Paul lived here for 2 years.

The ruins of the city, Ephesus, are some of the greatest in the modern world. Around 1 000 BC a Greek city was built here. The city we see today was founded in the 4th Century BC by the successor of Alexander the Great, Lysinachus. Two great Councils of the early Church were held here in 431 and 449 AD. The highlights are: the Double Church where the Third Ecumenical Council was held in 431 AD, the Library of Celcius, the Temple of Hadrian, the Fountain of Trajan, the Theatre and the Temple of Artemis. You will visit the house of Virgin Mary. This little stone house, restored and converted into a chapel in 1951, has attracted pilgrims of every religion and race for a great number of years. The house is located about 8 km from the center of the ancient city. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary has spent her last days here and was taken care of by the Apostle Paul.

32

Day 11:

A visit to Thyatira (modern Akhisar) will also be made. You will start the day by visiting the silk market and Sultan Mehmet’s Tomb in Bursa. Afterwards you will depart for Istanbul. On the way to Istanbul you will stop at the ruins of St Sophia, in Nicaea. It was here that Emperor Constantine held the first Ecumenical Council in 325 AD. The purpose of this council was to codify the faith. To this day the Nicene Creed, is the only creed of the Christian church, common to all sects. After crossing the Izmit Gulf by ferry, you will arrive in Istanbul, where you will visit the spice market and have a farewell dinner. On this day the group will return from Istanbul to Johannesburg.

Western Turkey is home to the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. These churches are also known as the Seven Churches of Revelations/Apocalypse (Revelations).. Between the 3rd and 7th centuries AD Christianity was a central force in the development of Anatolia. In the Early Christian era the Apostle Paul, born Saul of Tarsus around 1 AD, travelled through Asia Minor to preach the Gospel. He established some of the first churches in Asia Minor.

Biblical Turkey, the other Holy Land As a travel destination, Turkey is on the list of the top 10 holiday destinations in the world. The landscape of this country is dotted with battlegrounds, ruined castles and the palaces of great empires. Turkey is extremely diverse and culturally colourful and also has more biblical sites than any other country in the Middle East. It is no wonder that pilgrims visit Turkey regularly to “walk in the footsteps” of apostles John and Paul. Turkey, also known as the “other Holy Land”, plays a unique role in the Bible and therefore has a rich spiritual heritage. Amongst others it is home to the Seven Churches of Asia Minor - also known as the Seven Churches of Revelation and the Seven Churches of the Apocalypse (Revelation). The olive tree A reminder of the presence of God

by Chrisna Hattingh

Every day I am amazed that God created everything with such care, each thing fulfilling a different purpose, even if it is just pretty to look at, or nice to eat. But in most cases we have to take a deeper look to see the meaning behind the beauty. If you look at something as simple as the olive, you can’t believe that it plays such a big role in the Bible. There are about 25 references to the olive tree and more than 160 references to olive oil in the Bible. The first reference to the olive tree is in Genesis 8:11. This was after God sent the big flood and Noah sent out a dove to see if the water was subsiding Then the dove came to him in the evening, and behold, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in her mouth; and Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth.

Imagine the promise this little leaf gave Noah and everyone aboard the arc. Just like the love of God for His children, the olive tree is evergreen and decorates the hills with its green leaves in the winter. The leaves of the olive tree are bluegreen above and grey beneath, and as the wind blows, it can seem like the hills where these trees are planted are shimmering. This shimmer can also be seen as a reminder of the beautiful presence of God. In the Bible these trees were seen as a sign of wealth. Psalm 128:3, 4 refers to how wealthy one would be if you had a lot of children. It also refers to the endless amount of sprouts that can spring form the olive tree. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the very heart of your house, your children like olive plants all around your table.

34

Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. In Hosea 14:7, the olive trees are referred to as being strong.

Those who dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall be revived like grain, and grow like a vine. Their scent shall be like the wine of Lebanon. The olive tree also has a remarkable root system and that is what helps it survive in harsh surroundings. However, it needs a lot of care to produce a good crop. If we are firmly rooted in God and the way He wants us to live our lives, we do not have to worry about the rest, because He will take good care of us, cultivating us to produce the fruit of the Spirit. In the Bible there were four main uses for olive oil. It was used for food, for burning their lamps, as an ointment and for making soap. Apart from these uses olive oil also has healing values. There are 191 references to the healing power of olive oil in the Bible. It was, and still sometimes is used to prevent skin cancer, support weight loss, strengthen weak fingernails, soften calluses, heal stomach ulcers, prevent heart attacks and strokes and heal frost bite. It is amazing to think that God created this one plant and fruit so that we can use it for all of these different purposes. We have to thank Him for giving us the knowledge to use the things that He provides through simple plants and fruit, such as the olive tree and its fruit.

Business Talk

Enhance your business through advertising Studies and frequent research initiatives consistently show that advertising during any economy has a marked effect on customer loyalty and enhances the advertiser’s long-term competitive advantage.

Advertising, therefore, is the most important tool in the marketing of products and services. The benefits of advertising include: • • • • • •

Information to the customer It helps in retaining loyal customers It decreases the loss of customers and enlists new customers. Improves the sale of products Alters people’s attitude Direct communication

Of all the mediums available to advertisers, magazine advertising offers the most effective option as this medium allows for better targeting of audiences, higher reader involvement, better quality paper and the smaller page size permits even small ads stand out. Advertisers using Christian publications enjoy even greater advantages and report that they receive a disproportionately higher number of responses than when advertising in some other types of magazines. So why are Christian readers so responsive? Christian readers have a tendency to establish very strong bonds with their publications and many view them as not only sources of information but also as valuable guides in life’s journey. The love and trust they have in their publications often spills over to the advertisements, which they regularly use to acquire information on products and services of interest to them. As a group, these readers are linked together by their passion and interest in their respective communities and these magazines help satisfy their appetite. In fact, they value their Christian publications so highly that they often refer back an average of 2.3 times to re-read past issues. What this effectively means to the average advertiser, is that every advertisement that they place in these magazines enjoys additional exposure from the longer shelf life. If you are an executive who understands that advertising is the mechanism that keeps your business going, and who is always searching for cost effective ways to promote your company and generate a new customer base, then you will be pleased with the advertising opportunities and packages offered by Devoted. Devoted meets the two most critical elements necessary to carry out a successful print advertising campaign, that is, reaching a focused target audience and doing it cost-effectively.

Relationship Focus get uneasy with commercialised days like Valentine’s Q: Iday since I know my wife EXPECTS me to be “romantic” and I just really don’t know how to – help me please?!

A: Firstly, women - men cannot read your mind, so when

men ask “what do you want me to do for us?” – tell him straight – no hinting, no probing – tell him step-by-step. Secondly, romance is different for men and women. Men think x-rated and women think PG when it comes to romancing each other. That is why it is important to ask and not assume. Thirdly, romance is a choice you make –spending quality time together, doing things together that both like and spoiling each other by doing things for the other party you know they will appreciate and enjoy! Ask God to help you think more creatively on how to treat your partner with a message of love, the focus is to show you care!

Q:

“Faith without deeds is dead” (James 2v18) Love is shown through your ACTIONS

My husband is not huge on communication – is this detrimental to our marriage and what can I do to encourage him to communicate more?

A: Most of the time we measure our relationship

How will I know if he is Mr. Right?

communication against the amount of VERBAL communication but there are many more ways of communicating. As we think deeper we realize “oh yes the obvious factor” - physical intimacy, but we forget the very important role of non-verbal communication – using body language and pondering the five languages of love ( time, gifts, deeds, affirmation and touch) –So YES you can communicate love beyond using words!

Stop talking and start doing, help him communicate by your example of showing love: Give him hugs (touch is important to show you care) Make his favourite food or spoil him with coffee in bed Buy him a small gift to show your appreciation Believe in him, even when getting lost leave it to him to get you back on track, don’t take over, show him you trust him. You sitting back quietly speaks louder than any “good advice” you have to offer! Show him you appreciate and respect his work, how he provides for you Let him understand that his presence makes you feel safe Support him and keep him company when he works on a project Write him special notes and remember to always make eye contact LAUGH together at least once a day!

1.

Start by having a clear picture of the relationship you want and pray for the person that will match that and don’t settle for second best.

2.

When there are red flags – listen to them and don’t just ignore them.

3.

Be quick to recognise the traits of Mr. Wrong! How he deals with anger, control, criticism and most importantly – his relationship with God!

4.

You will know – if you don’t, then maybe he is not your Mr. Right…

G o d is lig ht... G o d is bre ath... In the East they talk about the four elements of the earth: ”EARTH-WATER-WIND-FIRE”. Everything is constructed of atoms which originates from the sun in the form of light - U.V.F.I.R - every element on the Periodic Table including; Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Helium, Xenon, etc.

Be responsible for you own health: • •

If we eat plants, breath clean air, drink pure water, exercise in sunlight, work, love one another, forgive one another, belong to a group of people like a family, church or club … then we are healthy human beings. We should be living up to an age of 120 years with a 100 % quality life.

• • •

When our body is balanced and in perfect equation, we are healthy. An unhealthy body consists of soda drinks, potato chips, too much bread, meat, sugar, over cooked food and not enough water intake. The body is then out of balance and our glands are filled with toxins – or it is fossilized from fluoride in drinking water and heavy metals are accumulating in our bodies. The result is an imbalanced body, brain and glands with a negative frequency and out of sync. The result is endless: Cancer, Diabetes, Indigestion, Fatigue, and many more diseases …

Eat fruit, seeds, nuts and vegetables. Drink 2.5 litres of clean, filtered water every day. Eliminate bakery carbs and meat for two months. Thereafter, eat very little lean meat; don’t eat sugar, salt and junk food. Walk and exercise - breath deep and slow.

Having Ozone and Far Infra-Red treatments gives us Oxygen and Light, providing us with what God gave us direct from the Sun.

We sometimes ask why God does allow diseases. Ephesians 4 (the last verse) says: ”God gave all authority to us to rule and reign on this world.” This implies that disease is a condition of the body which is a result of our disobedience to what God meant for us to eat.

The treatment – • detox us from toxins • improves blood circulation • rejuvenate cells • alkaline our bodies • kill bacteria • energize us • and lots more.

This can all be achieved in the comfort of your own environment after a day at the office when you were out of the sun. So, it is time to get God’s Light, Sun and Breath back in your life. You will once again feel alive, healthy and energized. Written by Dr Anton Neethling, a health guru who founded the EBA Health and Wellness Centres based on the principles of Electro Bio Magnetic Analysis.
