“A psalm for giving thanks. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing! Know that the Lord, He is God! It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name! For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.” Psalm 100:1-5

Celebrating
Celebrating
life!
Hykie Berg, well-known actor and inspirational speaker, and I have a few things in common: We are both passionate about helping people whose lives have been stolen; we both celebrate our birthdays on the same day; and we both like cappuccinos
S
o, we have decided over a cuppa that this year we will celebrate our birthdays together and that we would go BIG. Our intention was to celebrate life by honouring stolen lives, even if we do not know them personally. We decided to ask people to join us in giving them hope (page14). The message we wanted them to take back to their own lives and to share with others was: “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter” (Martin Luther King Jr). I shared some statistics with the audience, specifically on human trafficking. However, the problem with statistics is that it is just numbers. It means nothing to most people. We are all – in one way or another - part of statistics, and the message behind it gets lost in the process. And, in a world filled with greed, violence, corruption, and abuse, we stopped listening and we stopped caring! I wanted to convey a strong message that those statistics represent real people like us: people with feelings, hopes, desires, dreams… I struggled for weeks on how to bring the statistics to life, so that people could start to care again. And then the Lord instructed me in one of our “private sessions” to share MY life story on this day. And boy, this was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life! I decided to obey the Lord – even if it takes so much from me (read pages12 & 13). I do it only in the hope that some people will be inspired by it - and so that others start again to care about those who are going through pain and
hardship. It is never my intention to hurt people, but to use a true story so that others can learn from it, and get inspiration from it to keep on keeping on – no matter what life throws at them! The second and equally important message that I wanted people to take home was that good intentions mean NOTHING if it is not put into action. Hykie, a man who is not known for lip service only, but as a man who puts his commitments into action, launched his Hope In ACTion campaign at the event. Devoted is so proud to partner with Hykie in this awesome campaign and to share the information with our readers. Please read the article on page 17 - and participate by registering on the website so Hykie can start communicating with you on the issues that matter. Nicholis Louw (front cover) has so many fans, and I am now his biggest fan and follower. Not only because he is a celebrity and one of South Africa’s most beloved singers, but because he is a godly man who uses his platform to advance the kingdom in his day-to-day life. Nicholis is a man of substance and one who uses his talents to win souls for Jesus and to help others… a man who is true to his calling (pages 4 – 6). It is no accident that our dream destination article on pages 20 & 21 is our choice for this issue. If you really want to unwind from the rat race; if you really want to celebrate life in its fullest, if you really want to be closer to God and the beautiful surroundings that He created for our enjoyment, you have to read this article on the Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge.
As always, I hope that this issue of Devoted will inspire you to use your own platform to advance the kingdom and to win souls for Him, our Lord and Saviour. Love

Rocking for Jesus!
Cover Story There is a saying that first impressions count and are mostly lasting, because you form a mental image of that person. A first impression is all about appearances, the first conversation and the overall way in which that person presents themselves. I believe that eyes do not lie and I always look for clues in a person’s eyes when we meet for the first time! Matthew 6:22 (KJB) says: “The light of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light”
N
icholis Louw is currently one of the most popular rock/ pop singers of South Africa. But this is not the only reason why I wanted to do an interview with him. What struck me most about the pictures that I saw of him was the beautiful, and bold cross around his neck on his website homepage … and then, the kind eyes! This motivated me to meet with him and to find out what the cross symbolises for him, among other things. Now, let me start by declaring that Nicholis was rather late for our interview and photoshoots; and under normal circumstances this is not a good sign! I am extremely punctual and expect nothing less from others. However, I must also state (in all fairness) that he did call me in time to explain and to apologise… all in his pleasant, warm voice. That voice scored him some extra brownie points with me... To put things into perspective, I am not a rock-fan, nor am I a pop-fan. I have never attended one of Nicholis’ live shows, but now hope to do it soonest! The music videos I saw of his performances came across as quite “wild” for my liking. But, I try to keep an open mind when I meet a person for the first time. I believe that the eyes of a person are the windows to their soul. In fact, in an article in the Daily Mail it has even been confirmed by scientists that “eye structure and personality could be linked plainly because genes responsible for the development of the iris play a role in shaping part of the frontal lobe of the brain which influences personality”! I have developed the ability over time to detect whether a person is warm and trusting, or otherwise, from their eyes! I am no scientist, but through the years I have developed a sixth sense that helped me to form a true opinion of someone I meet by keeping eye contact. I am providing you with this background information so that you can understand my state of mind when meeting this young man for the first time. My first look into Nicholis’ kind, and warm eyes, my observations of the gentle and professional way he treated me
and the photographers right through our time together… all of these little things helped me to realise that we have the real deal here: An honest man with no hidden agendas. What you see, is what you get! A person with spiritual maturity who is successful in turning his work into worship… a well-known and well-loved artist with both his feet firmly on the ground! We deliberately took Nicholis out of his comfort zone, taking pictures (while doing the interview) of him among ants and other creatures of the veld. I did not want studio pictures, because I wanted to see how he would fare within the natural, but uncomfortable surroundings. It was clear: we had a professional person in front of the camera, knowing exactly what to do and when – all the while I was shooting questions at him! He was my hero from start to finish! Nicholis was born on 30 December 1978 in East London. He was about 11 years old when he realised that music is his passion and that the music lessons his parents encouraged him to take was “no longer a job, but something I enjoyed doing,” he said. He can also play a wide variety of music instruments, which include the guitar and all sorts of keyboard instruments. He took singing lessons from an early age; and started his professional music career in about 2003. So far, he has released nine albums and sold more than 620 000 copies. He says his favourite album is the current one, which was recently released. I wanted to know more about the man with the kind eyes, other than what was written on websites and in the printed media. I asked him a few personal questions and this is how the story unfolded: Question: How does it feel to be called one of the most popular South African singers? Nicholis: It is an honour and enormous privilege - and I feel humbled by it. However, I can assure you that the “title” comes with a whole lot of hard work and perseverance. The competition is stiff out there and an artist has to stay on top of his game. Therefore,

Cover Story I develop myself and my career constructively through studies and hard work. However, sometimes the fame gets to you, especially when the public regards you as private property! But, mostly people are kind and understand that all of us need, and appreciate, our privacy sometimes! Question: Who is your personal mentor? Nicholis: It is my parents, as they have encouraged and supported me all my life. I am crazy about my family. Question: What are the important things in life? Nicholis: I believe that if you have peace, happiness and good luck, you have everything. And, of course, your health is important too. After Jesus, my wife is the most important person and now we are expecting a baby – my cup is overflowing with joy! Question: What do you do in your free time? Nicholis: I do not have much of that, but when I do have some free time, I like to just chill out with my loved ones! I also enjoy gardening and I like fast cars. I love to race whenever I get the time for it. My favourite car is my Jaguar XJR – riding him is “vampiristic”. Question: What role does religion play in your life and in your music career? Nicholis: I am a member of the awesome Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Pretoria and get lots of inspiration from Ps. At Boshoff. I have been a Christian ever since I can remember. But it does not mean that I am perfect. I simply cannot live up to Christ’s example as I am a human being and far from holy. I humbly believe that people should rather look to God (not me) for answers and perfections. I also believe that I have received deliverance from my sins and its consequences through Jesus. I am saved by my faith in Him, my Saviour. In Christ we are forgiven and accepted. Our relationships with the people around us should be
influenced by the changes the Lord works inside us. I strongly believe that Christians can play secular music for God’s glory. I sometimes sing Gospel songs as well, but I use the platform of my career to build the kingdom and to glorify God in my interactions with people and to win souls for Him. God gave us talents to benefit others and He expects us to use our talents. That is what I do. Question: Anything else you would like to tell our readers? Nicholis: In my career I would not be successful without the people who support me, who come to my performances and buy my CDs. Thank you for staying so loyal. The last thing I have to say is that people should enjoy what they do and use the platforms they have been given, and their God-given talents, to make a difference in the world. Nicholis married the love of his life, Denise (Shrewsbury) Louw, and the couple is expecting their first child later this year. From the posts on his social media platforms, it is clear that Nicholis has his priorities right: First Jesus, then his wife and the little one they are expecting. Our conversation made me realise that it does not matter what type of work we do or job we hold. What matters is that, as Christians, we have been called to take care of our business in such a way that glorifies God. Nicholis is a good example of how a devout Christian can infuse meaning and value into his talents, so that everything he does every day can turn his singing talent into blessings! Our time together came to an end too soon. Nicholis is a sweet, down-to-earth person – the type I like! The good news is, I am converted. Nicholis’ thousands of fans will appreciate the fact that he now has one more devoted fan. Maybe it is the time to turn my old Elvis Presley CDs in for his!

Living for Jesus
praise Singing
to the Lord by Johan Terblanché
“O joyful Light of the holy glory of the immortal, heavenly, holy, blessed Father, O Jesus Christ. Now that we have come to the setting of the sun and see the evening light, we sing the praise of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is right at all times to hymn You with holy voices, Son of God, Giver of life. Therefore the world glorifies You” (Phos Ilaron, also known as “Gladsome Light” or “Joyful light”; A commonly used translation of the song by Ephraim Lash)

A
round 196 A.D. Athenogenes and ten of his students were burned alive for their faith in Christ. As he approached the fire Athenogenes burst out in song, singing the now famous song Phos Ilaron (also known as “Gladsome Light” or “Joyful light”) as his disciples stood by. Though it is disputed, many believe Athenogenes is the author of this hymn. When I read the hymn, I ask myself: “Would I have been able to sing praises unto God if it was me who was lead to the fire? Would I have been able to glorify Jesus Christ if I were to be burned to death? Would I have sung ‘it is right at all times to hymn You with holy voices’ even as I came to the setting of the sun or see the evening light?” Many of us are facing trials and tribulations. Many are facing hardships and troubles. Only a few of us reading this today are threatened by death because of our faith. But amidst all of this or even in spite of it all, we are called to glorify Him; we are called to praise His name. Oh, many have said: “I can’t, I’m not able!” but today it is not about you or where you are. It is all about Him, all about God our Creator, all about Christ our Saviour, all about the Holy Spirit, our Comforter. “But you do not know what I’m facing!” some might say. Yes, you’re right, but I do know Who is at your side, or Who will carry you through if you allow Him too. It is when trials and tribulation comes our way, when we face hardship and trouble that we need to know “The God on the mountain is still God in the valley. When things go wrong, He’ll make it right. And the God of the good times is still God in the bad times. The God of the day is still God in the night.” (From the song God of the mountains by Bill Gaither).
“You talk of faith when you’re up on the mountain. Oh but the talk comes easy when life’s at its best. It’s down in the valley of trials and temptation when faith is really put to the test. (From the song God of the mountains by Bill Gaither). Is there any better way to put faith to the test than to sing praises to our God and to glorify Him? Is there a better way to prove your faith than to thank God for all He has done and for what He is about to do? Disbelief says: “My finances are a mess!” Faith says: “Praise God, who will bring me out of this mess.” Disbelief says: “My husband does not serve the Lord and is a drunkard!” Faith says: “I praise God for his salvation, even while he is still in sin and bondage.” Disbelief says: “My marriage is on the rocks!” Faith says: “Praise the Lord, the solid rock in which I place my trust.” Come what may, praise the Father, praise the Son and praise the Holy Spirit. Indeed, even in the face of death, we can sing with Athenogenes: “It is right at all times to hymn You with holy voices, Son of God, Giver of life.” We too can say: Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation (Habakkuk 3:17-18).
My dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful test you are suffering, as though something unusual were happening to you. Rather be glad that you are sharing in Christ’s sufferings, so that you may be full of joy when His glory is revealed (1 Peter 4:12-13)

A great deed begins with a
simple idea!
For years Devoted has motivated people to put their talents and skills to good use; and we love telling the stories of ordinary people using the platforms available to them to do extraordinary things for the benefit of others. As Christians we are called to make a difference by helping those in need. It is not always about giving money, but about using the skills and talents that you have to glorify His Name by helping the less fortunate

T
his is the case with Chris Liebenberg who is the manager of new vehicle sales at McCarthy Ford in Silver Lakes and Chris Batts, better known as Team Chris. These two businessmen have been using their tyre-flipping skills to make a difference in the communities where they serve. Between the two of them, they hold various world records for tyre flipping, but it is the good causes they support that are their passion. Their ability to break world records has benefitted a great number of causes over time, like the Noordwyk’s Yensani Children’s Home and also Toys for Africa – among others. Not only do they selflessly participate in tyre flipping exercises to create awareness for causes they believe in, but they use these events to help raise funds to help organisations that use the money for the benefit of others. Tyre flipping - for those of you who do not have a clue what I am referring to - is associated with body building or body sculpting. It is regarded as one of the best body strength and conditioning workouts. This is how it works: You use your entire body to flip the tyre (usually quite big and heavy), but those who know better believe that it is more a mind game… It is usually done by a single person, but Team Chris support each other. They take turns to flip the tyre for long distances in an effort to try and break various world records – and they usually do. It takes quite a lot of willpower, endurance and strength to participate in
tyre flipping; and to do it in the name of charity, it definitely – without a doubt – takes a good heart too! These two men trained all those hours and then eventually gave their time and efforts to help children they would probably never meet in person. How awesome is that? I saw some of these special events on YouTube, but was quite nosy about the story behind the story. So, I asked Chris Liebenberg to explain some of the secrets behind this novel idea:
Question: Chris, what is the best way or technique to flip the tyre?
Answer: Keep your back straight and bent your knees!
Question: For how long has Team Chris been doing tyre flipping?
Answer: For three years. Question: How many records do Team Chris plan to smash before you stop?
Answer: As long as we are blessed with
health and are able to make a differerence, we will continue.
Question: Why do you do tyre flipping for charity?
Answer: It is a basic sport, all-around workout and a real crowd-pleaser!

Inspiration
From a stolen life to
Celebrating by Gerda Potgieter
Many people are going or have gone through something in their lives. Life is not plain sailing all the way. Some are luckier than others and can talk about a carefree childhood, a successful life and marriage… Others live a life full of turmoil and hurt and have been caught in cycles of pain and suffering. Some have been robbed of a life they always dreamed of. Their lives have been stolen…
A
life!
few years ago I read a book called Stolen Childhood, written by Pastor Laila Bevan. The book is about how she experienced her childhood, how she felt during the abuse and also how her childhood has affected her adult life. But the book is also a celebration of how she survived against all odds. This book spoke to my very soul, but what I could identify with most was the words on the front cover: “I was not afraid of dying… I was afraid of living.” She was only six years old when her fear for living consumed her and she tried to commit suicide by standing in the middle of a busy road, hoping that a big truck would come and bring an end to all her suffering. I can identify with those feelings of hopelessness and despair at such a young age. The worst of all is that when it comes to neglect and abuse, it is - heartbreakingly - most often the people whom the victims know personally who are the culprits who steal their lives. It is mothers and fathers, stepparents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, teachers, pastors, friends and acquaintances… the list is endless. I recently decided to share my life journey with guests at the Devoted Celebrating Life event that was held to create awareness for the Stolen Lives campaign, launched by Christian Art Distributors. After the event I was asked by so many to share my story with
Devoted readers as well. I am doing this in the hope that my real life story will inspire you; and help you with any issues, troubles or hurt that you might be suffering from – especially as a result of neglect and abuse. Your childhood does not have to define you. It does not need to dominate your actions and thinking for the rest of your life! Even if your life has been stolen from you, you can claim it back – by the grace of God! I was also not even six years old when my biggest fear was not to die, but to keep on living. I contemplated suicide for most of my childhood and teenage years. The thing that gets to you the most is not the abuse - but the fact that nobody cares when you go through the pain, hurt and confusion... You feel so desperately alone … In those days a “child was to be seen and not heard!” As a young child you had no voice and you had to suffer alone... with your hurt, your fears! So, as the adult woman representing that young and innocent little girl, I decided to - at last - give her a voice through the platform of Stolen Lives and to write her a letter so that she finally understands that there is hope; that one day she will be loved and that she will be able to understand that if God is with you, nothing is impossible for you. That one day she will also be able to celebrate life! That maybe one day her story may inspire another person whose life was stolen!

Inspiration
Dear little girl,
I
know that your life experience so far has included abandonment, neglect, abuse on so many levels and in many forms; and rape… Your dad will soon die in a car accident and as a result you will never know what kind of a man he was. You now suffer from feelings of pain, despair, guilt, confusion! As you grow older, your life experiences will also include a divorce; break-ups and many, many disappointments – especially from those people you thought were “on your side”. Over time, your experiences – both good and bad - will mould you into the person you are meant to be. You will eventually overcome all those awful experiences as you grow into the understanding that those things should not define you as a person. You will grow into a woman of substance who makes use of every opportunity that life is kind enough to give her. Although no one cared enough to reach out to you when you needed it the most, YOU will become a person who cares about people in pain; and who will use opportunities to help them the best you know how. If you are going to be the person God has intended you to be, it is entirely up to you! You have the power of choice! If you keep on keeping on – and only when you believe in yourself and in your future - even though others do not believe you can – you will succeed. You have been put on earth for a reason. You have a purpose. Find your purpose and the sooner you can do that, the sooner you can contribute to a larger picture and make a bigger impact. You will eventually come to understand that you can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of others just by being you – not somebody else! You will, with time, come to realise that even though others did not appreciate your worth as a human being, you were wonderfully made by your Creator who has a bigger plan for you. Forgiveness may probably be one of the hardest things that you will ever have to learn to do, but it will eventually bring you freedom. Forgiveness is never about those who have wronged you. It is not that you condone what they have done to you. Forgiveness is always about you, and only you. It is about getting rid of hatred, bitterness and all those toxic feelings that prevent you from becoming the person you are supposed to be! Forgiveness also helps you to understand that those who hurt you did probably not know any better. You have not walked in their shoes and maybe they did not intend to hurt you so badly. Even though you will eventually be forced to work full-time and study part-time to better your life and also the lives of those dear to you, you will succeed in following
your dreams. Even though you were told by others that “it is a waste of good time and money to educate girls”, you will one day hold a BA, Honours and Masters degrees, among others – all of them cum laude. And you will do it with hard work and no financial support from others. The milestones and achievements have helped to grow and empower you in your career, but you will eventually realise that you do not need any titles, awards, accolades or special positions to lead. Leadership is about integrity, self-development, personal fulfilment, knowing that failures are nothing more than learning how to win; and that failure is the highway to success. You will grow to understand that the greatest privilege of leadership is the chance to elevate lives. Over time you will acquire all the life skills that will make you the person that you will become one day. Your body will change as you age and you will learn to love it – even though you now hate it passionately because of what is happening to you. Just go with the changes, embrace it and age beautifully. What is more important is that you learn that you can only make an impact externally if you have transformed yourself internally. Change starts from the inside out. You have to work on it all the time! One day – even though you do not understand the value of it now – you will be reborn into Christ, our Lord and Saviour. And you will become a new person, and all those awful things that are happening to you now, and those awful things that will happen to you in your future, will no longer matter! Part of growing older is gaining wisdom from your experiences and learning as you go. Life brings many opportunities for growth. Stop thinking that you are worthless, because God will not create a worthless life. Regularly renew yourself, but, NEVER give up on who you are. You have to enrich your own life and those of others by enriching your relationships. Show people that you care about them, reward them routinely and recognise others relentlessly. Even though your own good intentions and deeds will not always be noticed and acknowledged, the fact that you care – that you reach out – that you appreciate and acknowledge others – is by far more rewarding than getting something back. Investing in relationships and in experiences are the best investments you will ever make, because it is more rewarding than things… Little girl, you have to keep on keeping on and not give up! Although it does not feel like it now - you have a greater purpose than being a little girl who is only “good enough” for others to abuse. All that you are going through now will one day help you to become the best mother
for your own children; and you will become the best grandmother you are capable of – even though you will still make some mistakes as you go along. But, those mistakes will not be made because you do not care, but because you do not know better at the time – because you are human. But the biggest honour that is waiting for you -- and that is the real reason why you should keep on living - is that you will one day be called by the HIGHEST OF ALL AUTHORITIES to start a Christian lifestyle magazine that will change people’s lives. You will be devoted to this magazine that will have an impact and inspire many. You will use your God-given talents to make a difference in a broken world and you will be devoted to building the kingdom by the grace of God by using this platform. You will start small; you will make many mistakes; you will have many challenges along the way; you will be let down by so many people in the process – but, slowly but surely - you will build a team of equally devoted people and supporters and you will be part of an awesome group of people who will help others discover life through the Gospel. And one day, on the 16th of May 2015, you will be standing in front of a group of almost 200 people to celebrate life with those who have been – and will hopefully be part of your journey for many years to come. You will have the guts to share your story with them so that they will know that you do care about theirs! So that they know that you believe in them, that you are prepared to listen and to help! “
I chose to celebrate life against all odds! Every child should be protected, loved, cared for and appreciated. It is their birth right. www.devotedmag.co.za

STANDING
TALL
IN A FALLING WORLD Written by Angelique du Toit Reviewed by Gerda Potgieter
Over the years, since I have started Devoted, I have been “bombarded” with requests to review books, music, poems, etc. So much so that I simply cannot meet the demand anymore! But, every now and then God allows me to stumble upon a book I just know I have to share with my Devoted readers, so their lives can also be enriched by it

S
TANDING TALL IN A FALLING WORLD
is one of those magnificent books that offers practical and helpful assistance for difficult times - written with the honest hope that it could make a difference in people’s lives. It is written from a Christian perspective, intended to give hope to its readers… To give hope that we can stand strong, no matter what life throws at us. To give hope that we can all live a fulfilled life in today’s chaotic world where everything around us is falling apart. To give hope that we can live with confidence if we make the right decisions, and if we continuously empower ourselves to become the person God intended us to be. I attended the launch of this book and also other events where Angelique was a speaker. Every time I was part of such an event where she inspired people through her powerful messages, it was a lifechanging experience for me – and I did not expect any less from her book. One of the things that makes this book stand out among thousands of other inspirational and so-called “self-help” books – some of which I have read over the years - is that the book is written from her own life experience. I strongly believe that you can only help others if you have personally felt the pain, the despair, the challenges and pressures of an angry world out there. And this book, written in a practical and conversational style, will most definitely be instrumental in helping one cope with the demands of everyday life. It is not a book to read and to put away on a shelf. It is a book that should be kept next to you… next to your Bible. No one can deny that we are living in a
falling world and so many people are hurt on a daily basis – so many by the hands of others. Somehow among the chaos and hurt, some people have lost their desire to help others and the ability to help themselves… It is for this reason that I chose this specific book to review; and because I – like Angelique – strongly believe that we have a choice in life. That our survival within a falling world solely depends on the choices we make – so that we can also celebrate life to its fullest. The book emphasises the fact that we all have the natural power to stand up and stand tall within a world falling apart. “The destiny of your soul lies in the choices you make on a moment-by-moment basis. You decide whether you shackle your soul with destructive thinking, guilt, anger or depressing actions”, Angelique writes - and I could not have been put it better! Your life will definitely be enriched by this book and you can also enrich someone else’s life by giving them a copy. I cannot think of a better gift in a falling world… Do not miss out on the profile of Angelique du Toit that we plan to publish in one of the next issues of Devoted. Hope in Action
How we bring
Hope!
By Hykie Berg
We all want more hope in our lives. We all want to live better lives and we all seek greater levels of personal freedom. We all want to be rid of fear, doubt and unnecessary things that keep us from where we are going and what we were meant to be in our lives. We all would love to live a life that matters; a life that truly makes a difference and a life that leaves some kind of worthy and lasting legacy behind
(Hykie Berg is not only a child of God; he was the winner of Survivor SA Plebs v Celebs in 2011, a wellknown inspirational speaker, actor and producer. He is also the founder of the Hope In ACTion group; and the author of the book, Hope In ACTion, which will be available soon.)
T
here are so many things holding people back to live a whole, fulfilling and purpose driven life. People suffer from grave emotional pain and things like depression, stress, addictions and other mental health illnesses can cause tremendous pain and loss of purpose. This is what the Hope In ACTion Group does; we bring hope and solutions to thousands of people across South Africa and the world by showcasing national as well as international professionals, distributing their invaluable expertise to those who are in desperate need of hope and restoration. We do it all online. We connect people. We seek, we serve we love. We educate our members by providing them with the most effective solutions to their challenges without them having to search for it. We showcase the greatest experts in their respective fields providing the members with all relevant contact details and how to get all necessary help and support. I believe that all people can live a life of purpose, passion and influence. Most people that suffer from addictions and or dual diagnosis don’t know where and how to ask for help. The concept of Hope In ACTion is the first of its kinds in South Africa. We all know that Substance Use Disorder as well as all the other psychiatric illnesses is a very real problem and challenge in South Africa and the world today. Our children and our families perish because of substance abuse as well as so many other grave emotional psychiatric illnesses. People are in turmoil because of a lack of knowledge. When people are presented with their loved ones’ emotional problems or challenges they often do not understand it or know where to start searching for the correct kind of help. Parents and family members also need just as much help and support. Family members and loved ones loose themselves in the patterns of their dysfunctional domestic dynamics, they become incapable of setting healthy boundaries and they too stop living. This is my greatest personal passion; to help people - especially those that have lost their sense of self to change the course of their lives. There are thousands of people and clinics claiming that they possess the answers to all our problems. Many of them or most of them are not legit and the Department of Social Development have a huge crisis on their hands. People struggle to find effective, efficient and reliable help because there are such vast amounts of unreliable information out there. We make it our finest priority to seek out the greatest experts in their respective fields
without you having to search for them. We bring you the experts and solutions in the following areas: Substance Use Disorder, dual diagnosis, co-occurring eating disorders, compulsive sexual behaviours, co-dependency (for people living with addicts/alcoholics) Depression, Bipolar, ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorders, Eating Disorders and many more. We allow them to share their hope, strength and experiences to those who truly want to change, make a difference and live a life of change and recovery. We inspire and we change lives. The Hope In ACTion Group wants to inspire and help people restore and improve their lives so that they may live a life of victory and success. The world does not need us to play small anymore. Our ambitions should go beyond ourselves, and our ability to bring hope, inspire and change the world should be our primary aim. We love doing this. We and our partners love walking a journey with you and assist you in discovering how we can help. The Hope In ACTion Group was born from a desire to seek truth wholeheartedly, serve the community fervently and to love ourselves and others selflessly and unconditionally. God says in Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children”. These are harsh words, and even though our task is an undertaking of gigantic proportion we believe it is our duty to provide our country as well as the world with every bit of reliable information we can find to help, restore and rebuild our lives and our communities. The Hope In ACTion Group is an extension of Gods purpose in my life, and I feel humbled by the knowing that I am building His Church and community and bringing hope to those who are in desperate need of change. I challenge you to join us and become part of the change we so earnestly seek in our world. Visit us at www.HopeInAction.co.za register and I will send you a free gift. Become who you were born to be and remember, seek wholeheartedly, serve fervently and always love selflessly. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Speak Up!
Statues, names, inconsistencies and life’s uncertainties… Communication is an art, which involves knowing what to say and when to say it. Far too often, people just sit back and say nothing when somebody really needs to say something about an idea, suggestion, observation, criticism or a message from the Lord… We believe that silence is deemed as approval. This series is all about standing up for what you believe is right and making your peace. M
ore than a century after his death, Cecil John Rhodes finds himself in a crate, with a plastic bag wrapped around his face. He is, of course, not at all bothered by this. This whole recent saga reminds me of the fact that I may also still have a few bones to pick with Mr Rhodes for what he, directly or indirectly, did to my ancestors 114 years ago. I chose not to spend any energy on this though; it will not change anything. I am, however, concerned about the underlying attitudes behind the demand to take his statue down. Destroying what was established by those before you, is an age-old type of behaviour by so-called conquerors; first, drive out the enemy, then, destroy what has been established - good or bad. This behaviour is nothing but a misguided form of celebration and revenge. The Mongols, the Greeks and the Romans - they all did this. The Taliban in Afghanistan and ISIS in Iraq and Syria are no different. Now this is also taking place in South Africa, however, surreptitiously and under other pretences. In certain cases, these destructive conquerors eventually succeed in becoming prospering nations; unfortunately, most do not manage to do that, in which case the societies involved remain ruined forever and their countries become areas of desolation. Therefore, before you destroy, make sure that you have the ability to rebuild.
So, after Cecil John Rhodes’ statue has been removed, followed by the statues of perhaps King George V at the University of KwazuluNatal, Queen Victoria at Parliament, and then Paul Kruger in Church Square in Pretoria; and perhaps after convincing Mugabe to remove David Livingstone’s statue from Victoria Falls and to exhume Rhodes’ bones from his grave on Malindidzimu (the hill where he would stand in wonder of the landscape in front of him and made reference to the “... peacefulness of it all; the chaotic grandeur of it; it creates a feeling of awe and brings home to one how very small we are”), and after every street and school has been renamed and the history books have been rewritten - then what? Why only remove Rhodes’ statue? Why still make use of the buildings on campus and the scholarships? Why accept anything from Rhodes? Why not make the sacrifices where it matters, where it is felt personally? Why only remove the symbols? After the victor’s euphoria of proving a point and settling a score has worn off, what happens then? Will that be enough? Will the focus then shift to reconciliation, nation-building, education and overall service delivery? Will we then create jobs, address poverty, grow the economy? I don’t think so. The spirit of revenge does not carry in itself the ability to build; only to destroy. A vengeful spirit has an endless appetite for creating new issues; it won’t be satisfied
Speak Up! with only the removal of a statue. Unless there is a supernatural change of heart, a bad attitude (originating from self-pity, bitterness, revenge, not taking personal responsibility, blaming others, living a life in the rear-view mirror) can never be satisfied; it will always end in disaster. History is unpredictable; but it also has a strange way of repeating itself. Empires and kingdoms come and go; even civilisations cease to exist. Statues are erected and then, sooner or later, demolished. Can it be that, one day, the statue of the late President Nelson Mandela and that of Walter and Albertina Sisulu will be taken down for their policies of non-racialism and reconciliation? Street names will be changed again, and again, and again. It is all so pointless. No one is perfect. There is so much bad in the best of us and yet there is so much good in the worst of us. Cecil John Rhodes was just another imperfect human being. His sin was that he was an imperialist, an oppressor and a racist, bringing with it all kinds of evils. But was being a racist then worse than being a racist now, or being a nationalist of the pre- or the post-94 type? Why is the current pilfering of our resources and taxes different from Rhodes’ imperialism? It was inspired by greed then, it is inspired by greed now; the way it plays out can never be pretty. We bring down his statue for his wrongs, whilst at the same time enjoying what he got right and tolerate exactly the same evils in our society. We are blind to this, pathetically exposed in our hopelessness, our inability to carve out a new future.
Proverbs 29:13 - “The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: the Lord gives light to the eyes of both” So let’s blame Rhodes; that will make us feel better, if only for a little while. Then we will have to find new culprits; new excuses. This is all so unproductive and self-defeating. Why do we refuse to learn from our past? The more we try to deny, twist and hide the past, the more we repeat it. We make the mistake by thinking that humans with different skin colours are inclined to make mistakes of a different kind. In the meantime, we are exactly the same. Given the opportunity, left to our own vices, we make ourselves guilty of the same sins. So, if we do not learn from our past (from people like Rhodes), we will repeat those evils. Yes, we are making the same mistakes as the ones we try to demonise. Humans are humans; skin colour does not determine the content of the heart.
Romans 10:12-13 “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved”
Let’s be frank, our nation faces severe challenges. Those who choose the path of destruction currently drive the agenda, or so it appears on the surface at least. Fortunately, despite all of this, there are those who are constructively working towards change, and there are the millions of South Africans who face their responsibilities every day; focussing on what is right: serving those around them, raising their children, caring for their families (and extended families), often with extremely limited means and building a future. I see them walking, often running, to work, some are fortunate to be able to drive to work - whilst it is still pitch-dark. This happens throughout South Africa every day! These are the true heroes of South Africa. Statues will never be built in their honour, streets will not be named after them. Strangely enough, they are also not the ones demanding the destruction of the existing ones. It is when you walk amongst these South Africans that you are inspired; seeing how they are cheerfully going about their business. Out of the current negativity a new vision can, of course, be born; a vision which might inspire all South Africans, to build a nation on lasting values. You can choose to be a part of the solution or the problem. Deuteronomy 30:15 & 19 “See, I have set before you today life and death, blessing and curses…This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before your life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live…”

Crystal Springs
A beautiful place to unwind
We are not travelling too far to our dream destination in this issue. We are taking our readers on a relaxing trip to Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge in Mpumalanga. It is the perfect place to unwind, de-stress or just to relax. It is an awesome place to build memories with your loved ones. Widely known as the gem of the Lowveld, Crystal Springs is located on a picturesque resort on a game reserve of about 5,000 hectares in the pristine countryside

H
owever, I must warn our readers that the road to Crystal Springs, especially the part from Dullstroom to Mashishing (Lydenburg) which is known as the R540, is seriously neglected and has plenty of potholes. Do not allow this to damper your enthusiasm – drive slowly and avoid the potholes, enjoy the surroundings - because the reward at the end of the journey, makes it all worthwhile! I am not surprised that the Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge has been named one of the top five big resorts in South Africa. The visit to Crystal Springs was arranged by my children (who also paid for the spoil) and I was not aware beforehand that they chose this specific destination to celebrate my special birthday. So, the opportunity presented itself to make memories of a lifetime! And I could not have chosen a better place myself! As you enter the main entrance on your way to the reception area, it is as if you are entering another place that is not really part of the crazy, chaotic and angry world out there. You breathe in the calmness, together with the fresh mountain air, and you immediately know that the beautiful surroundings can’t wait to reveal the gems nature has to offer. There are many things to do in the immediate area and the historic Pilgrim’s Rest is close by, but to tell you the truth, we did not really want to leave the resort in the short time we were there. The resort has so much on offer - that is to say once you have had enough of just sitting around to unwind. The spa, Jacuzzi, under-cover heated swimming pool and other facilities in the clubhouse are so popular that you have to book well in advance.
The resort is family-friendly. We observed that the game room was thoroughly enjoyed by children; and we also tried our skills on the mini golf course. There are a wide variety of game and bird species, and the many trees that surround the lodges must be amazing to see in spring. We were there at the beginning of May and you could see and feel winter coming - but it gave us an excuse to make use of the cosy fireplaces in the lodges! This was not my first visit to Crystal Springs. Over the years I have visited the lodge six times. The difference for me this time – apart from the fact that it was such a special occasion – was the friendly and professional staff that could not wait to serve us; and who greeted us with a warm welcome. The beautiful face-brick and thatch lodges clinging to the sides of rocky outcrops - are selfcatering, but there is a restaurant with excellent food on the premises for those who really want to make the best of the time without cooking or baking. The cherry on top of the cake for me was the fact that our lodge was equipped with a dishwasher! I do not even have one at home! Unfortunately, we could only stay for the weekend, but I would really recommend that you stay at least one week – a few days to just unwind and the rest of the time to explore the facilities on the resort and in the immediate areas. My family and I had a wonderful time, filled with many memories and experiences - and we have the pictures to prove it! However, as usual, I also share some other visitors’ comments to give you balanced feedback. For more information on the resort, you can visit www.crystalsprings.co.za.

What other people said about Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge this year: “THE PLACE TO BE - CRYSTAL SPRINGS” We went on holiday to Crystal Springs, the place is excellent and very clean. Well-mannered cleaners and the welcoming of guests is excellent. The restaurant sells very delicious food. Everything is perfect and the activities for the week is well-planned. Keep it up Crystal Springs, you really know how to take care of your visitors. - Stayed February 2015, travelled as a couple “SUPERB LOCATION FOR ALTITUDE TRAINING” We stayed at Crystal Springs as part of a professional road cycling training group, specifically because of the altitude of the resort and the training routes in the area. The resort accommodation was good and the general amenities and service were of a high standard. The only complaints we have - units are not serviced on a Sunday - which is problematic for anyone staying for longer periods - and there is no Wifi in the accommodation units. Wifi is only available at the Clubhouse. Having said that, we enjoyed our stay, it is perfect for altitude training and the general area is mindblowing. We will be back. Stayed January 2015, travelled with family “PEACEFUL AND SERENE” Lovely views in a quiet serene and peaceful atmosphere. 1778m above sea level. We were practically in the clouds, so for summer the temperature up there was a cool 22•C The resort offers an indoor heated pool which we thoroughly enjoyed in that weather. The town Pilgrim’s Rest is a quaint small and ancient friendly place close by where you can purchase arts and crafts for souveniers. Stayed January 2015 “BRILLIANT WEEKEND BREAK!” Reviewed 4 March 2015 My wife and I took a weekend break with our 2-month-old and had the most amazing trip! Staff were so helpful and friendly, unit was clean and quiet! The trip into Pilgrim’s Rest was also a highlight, amazing lunch and pubs in a fantastic part of South Africa! I highly recommend a trip out there! Stayed January 2015, travelled with family (Source: www.tripadvisor,co.za)

devotedly By Willem de Beer
Everyone needs someone to look up to or someone to imitate or an example to follow through difficult situations. These people are referred to as role models who are known for their moral behaviour, amongst other great qualities, and instilling those qualities in their peers and followers. In this regard, Marc Mundell is a role model par excellence
M
arc, now 31, was born in Ixopo in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, but moved to Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal at the age of 10. After finishing high school there, he moved to Pretoria in 2002 and has stayed there ever since. He then enrolled for a degree in sport science at the University of Pretoria where he graduated in 2004. He also finished his Honours (2005) and Masters (2011) degrees at Tuks in the field of Human Movement Sciences. He is currently working as a Senior Sports Manager at University Sport South Africa (USSA), assisting with the coordination of the domestic and international sporting participation of student athletes. As a scholar, Marc was very interested in sport in general and excelled in various sports such as athletics (national colours), badminton (provincial team), cricket (school’s first team), cross-country (provincial team), hockey (provincial team), rugby (school’s first team), softball (provincial team), squash and swimming. Despite being so multi-talented, his dream of being an Olympian set his course towards an athletic career. “My sport of choice and preference is athletics where I compete in the race-walking discipline and specialise in the 50km race-walk. I started race-walking when I was 12 years old and although I participated in a variety of other sporting activities growing up, it was racewalking that brought me to University and enabled me to follow my personal dream.” At university level, he set fire to his dream by being named the Junior Athlete of the Year in 2002 and later the Tuks Student Sportsman of the Year in 2004. Marc has since represented the country on thirteen different occasions. The most notable of these is the realisation of his dream and what most athletes consider to be the pinnacle of their career – The Olympic Games. In 2012, he competed in the Olympic Games held in London, England, in the 50km race-walk. On this occasion he finished 32nd overall and delivered a new personal best and also set a new African record. He also finished 31st in the World Championships in 2013 held in Moscow, Russia. Furthermore, he participated in numerous Race-Walking World Cups held by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) every two years and African Championships. Travelling to cities like Naumburg, La Coruna, Algiers, Bangkok, Addis Ababa, Chihuahua, Saransk, Benin, London and Moscow, Marc is also a seasoned world traveller. What makes Marc such a role model is not his athletic ability, determination or his humility. It is the fact that his life testifies of a man devoted to
God. In all that he does, he honours God for his abilities and talents. “It (his athletic ability) is most definitely a gift from God and an opportunity for me to showcase His love and provision whilst competing. I have been incredibly blessed to travel and participate around the world and in doing so, learnt about myself, my world and my approach to life. The Lord has also blessed me with a companion for my journey and I am delighted to share my faith and experiences with my wife.” He explains that walking into the Olympic stadium during the opening ceremony was “an incredibly momentous occasion” for him. Also, being announced at the start of his event at the Games with the best in the world was “super special and emotional” for him. He is already dreaming of Rio 2016 (the next Olympic Games) and is working towards being a top 10 contender; although he admits “it is most definitely a comprehensive juggling act, balancing my commitments with work, family and friendship, whilst pursuing a personal aspiration.” In this regard he believes communication is crucial and that time management and personal sacrifice is your vehicle to success. Marc’s wife supports all his activities and allows him to be the best athlete, husband and person he can be. He also mentions that she is his biggest fan and follows him everywhere. He regards even his marriage with Jo as a blessing from God. Marc is devoted to his faith. To him, Christianity is about pursuing the life of Jesus and placing your faith and belief in God, through the good and bad times in your life. His message to others is: “Don’t be embarrassed to be a Christian and to have Christian-based values and morals. Pursue Christ through prayer and application and surround yourself with like-minded, God-fearing people. His favourite verse in the Bible, to which his life testifies, is Isaiah 40:30-31: “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” We know Marc is going to make an even greater success of himself with God on his side. Devoted’s prayer is that you might go to greater heights in your athletic career and that the world will see your talent and know the One who gave it to you. If you also have a sport story to share, we would love to hear from you. Contact us at editor@devotedmag.co.za.

rom my experience I have finally come to understand what the Word of God says about medication and or illicit drug use; and it is my prayer that this will not only be an educational article, but a liberating one. The Greek word “Pharmakon” is defined as “a drug, i.e. spell-giving potion, ‘sorcerer,’ one who prepares or uses magical remedies”. This is where the word pharmacy or pharmacist was derived from. I’m not saying pharmacists are sorcerers, but you get how it came about! God calls us a sorcerer when we are involved with the distribution, production or consumption of potions, powders or pills that alter our normal state of mind also those who consume it. I believe the main reason this is so, is that mind-altering substances block the voice of the Holy Spirit, especially when a dependence on this substance has occurred. It also causes one to move in the direction which I call magnetic north, instead of true north in one’s life. Furthermore, it robs one of the very lifeenergy awarded to us by God for the time we are on earth, by keeping us so focused on obtaining the next script or fix, that we cannot focus our life-energy on bringing God’s creative purpose to light and it makes us walk in defeat to achieve our God-given destination. Whether our addictions are or have been drugs, alcohol, too much
caffeine or even food, we have all used these at some point or the other to sooth some form of pain and relied on them as coping mechanisms. Getting people addicted to illicit drugs as well as over-the-counter medicines remains a thriving industry and it is not getting any less. In fact, statistics show us that dealing with addiction in South Africa is costing tax-payers R20 billion a year. Imagine what can be done with this amount being available to the kingdom of God? This is why I am a firm believer that we, as communities, MUST “Unite 4 ViCtory”. This is our community initiative slogan and the “C” in ViCtory represents Christ in the ViCtorious outcome.
Revelation 22:14–15 (Amplified) states: “Blessed (happy and to be envied) are those who cleanse their garments, that they may have authority and the right to [approach] the tree of life and enter through the gates into the city. [But] without are the dogs and those who practice sorceries (magic arts) and impurity [lewd, adulterers] and idolaters and everyone who loves and deals in falsehood (untruth, error, deception and cheating).”
Stolen Lives Once we get the understanding that we have had the wrong friends in life who caused us to do off-themark things and only once this revelations proverbially “hits home” are we empowered to deal with what is wrong. However, it is not my intent to come across cynical in the next section of my article, it is my intent to drive home what this, as well as the next generation, is facing and I pray that this will be as educational to you as it is for me to put on paper. With that said, I want to discuss opiate addiction (heroin, brown sugar, thai white, sugar). Those who are categorised in this category are probably the most difficult to work with and rehabilitate. Statistics prove that less than two per cent of opiate/heroin addicts successfully recover from this lifestyle. In my understanding, heroin is widely available, the most addictive and the cheapest drug in the marketplace. Heroin is not the same as “designer drugs” which are designed to make you feel better through causing the high associated with it, as your body is flooded with endorphins and serotonin; as a matter of fact, heroin use is the lowest low you can go in addiction. Drug lords, in most cases, make use of heroin to get young, unsuspecting girls addicted during an experimental phase in their lives. When they end up owing, they are forced to have sex with the drug lord in order to pay off the debts, or to continue obtaining the drug, or even worse, they are abducted, relocated out of their city and forced to work the streets as prostitutes. I have found, in most cases of addiction recovery support, which most of the individuals who ended up with heroin (opiate) addiction have experienced massive trauma in their lives; and since heroin metabolises and becomes morphine in the body, it numbs the central nervous system. It is for this reason that it is the drug of choice, because the emotions are suppressed along with the physical attributes caused by severe trauma. I believe that Jesus IS the only way to break free from this addiction, but in order to achieve this, the individual will have to understand the following points: • A full surrender to Jesus is required to break free; • They have to have twice as much faith in God as what they believe can

help them recover and build a mindset that instinctively trusts and relies on God; The individual has to have an accountability structure in place and the individual will have to understand accountability in order to walk strong. This, in many cases, is a difficult point to instil, as rebellion accompanies addiction and the spirit of rebellion gradually leaves as the mind is renewed according to the Word of God; The individual will have to engage in renewing their minds by reading the Word, but above this, get an understanding of what they are reading ( Proverbs 4:7); The individual will without a doubt HAVE TO submit to the structure of the house of God (whichever one is the house that accepts them, allows space for them despite their past and one in which the fathers turn their hearts to the sons in the house with the intent of activating them through a path wrapped in love, fuelled by truth and ultimately lead them on the path of discipleship); In due course the individual will have to engage in a sacrifice of service unto God within their house; Eventually the individual will have to reach backwards and help someone who is where they were.
The following is required from the families of the individuals: • A non-empowering approach toward their loved one’s addiction. In other words, they cannot support the individual’s addiction through allowing scenarios that empower the individual to use drugs; • Clearly defined boundaries will have to be in place and enforced without question or explanation. (The moment the family member feels like they have to offer an explanation for their decision, they have to identify that manipulation is working in full force); • Individuals who have come through addiction while on recovery are what I call master manipulators and they know how to get what they want in order to fuel their addiction; • Despite the past of the individual, it is vital for the families to renew their minds in line with the direction and destiny the individual is moving in after he / she has made the commitment to Jesus. I’ve seen this pull recovering individuals
backwards every single time when the families are not unified in spirit, soul and mind of the individual undergoing recovery; • Cynicism cannot be portrayed verbally nor through body language to the recovering individual during their recovery as this will botch up their recovery process. Thus, the onus is on the family member to reinvent themselves too and renew who they are daily through meditation on the Word of God; besides, you are NEVER too old to change who you are either; • Continue to pray for your recovering loved one; • Get them into an accountability program like Recovery Coach SA which can be found on Facebook.
It is my prayer that you will gain understanding in all that you get and that you are empowered to Unite 4 ViCtory in Jesus name.

Pray…

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” Hosea 4:6 You can’t build a strong house without a strong, basic foundation. Devoted is going back to the basics of Christianity with this new series. n 1 Thessalonians 5:17 the Bible says “Pray without ceasing.” And again in Romans 12:12 the Bible says “Be patient in trouble, and always be prayerful.” But why is it so important to pray? And how are we supposed to pray? Prayer is how we communicate with God and part of how we build our relationship with Him. Think about it…when you first met your spouse you probably couldn’t get enough of talking to each other? What would happen if you had to stop communicating or only communicate once a week? I’m guessing your relationship would slowly start falling apart! And it’s the same with your relationship with God. In 1 Chronicles 16:11 the Bible says “Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always.” And in Philippians 4:6 it says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” The great thing about God, is the fact that He never gets tired of our prayers, He never gets irritated, He never ignores us. Revelation 8:4 says “The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.” Our prayers are like a sweet sacrifice unto God. In Proverbs 15:29 the Bible says “The Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous.” So now that we know that we should always pray and that God hears our prayer, let us look at how we should pray. In Matthew 6:5-13 Jesus explains how we should pray “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’” Simply put, we should keep the following in mind when praying: • We shouldn’t pray for the benefit of people. Our God is a personal God, don’t make your prayers impersonal and distanced. • Pray like you would normally talk – don’t use all these complicated words and phrases. Talk to God as your Father, because that is He who is. • Start your prayers by praising God – He deserves all our honour and praise and this is also how we should start our prayers. • Ask God that His will be done – we should always pray that God’s will be done in our lives… even if it might not be what we had in mind. • Ask for God’s provision. Never be ashamed to ask God to meet your needs or to provide for you. You are His child, God only wants the best for you – He knows what you need in any case, you just need to voice your needs. • Have a repentant heart. We should never become so used to God’s mercy and grace that we forget to ask for forgiveness when we did something that is not right. We are saved by grace, but we cannot keep on sinning because God is gracious. • Pray for God’s protection – over your life, your family and friends, over our country. We hope that this article will help you to grow in your prayer life and that your relationship with God will go to even greater heights.

didn’t always have the “celebrity” status you see these days. I won Miss Deaf South Africa in 2009 and was crowned 1st Princess at the Miss Deaf International in 2010, but it wasn’t an overnight success. I have appeared as a guest speaker in front of thousands of people here in South Africa, but as a child I could barely utter my name in front of my class. It’s a funny story. I had this huge fear of speaking in front of people; I would literally choke on my words. I felt painfully aware of my own insignificance. I loved reading books, though. I loved it so much, that at the age of 10, I firmly decided that my goal in life would be to become a librarian one day. My first job was when I was 11 years old. I started working at the local library for four hours every Saturday morning. I loved it. But soon I got bored, thinking there’s got to be more to life than just rearranging books according to the authors’ surnames. I needed a new challenge. My next job was while I was in matric. I waitressed at a restaurant , in Bloemfontein. It was a hard job, with long hours, aching feet and unfair tips. But I developed my people skills tremendously and I still use those skills today. I learnt how to respond when the customers were rude, and I also learnt about self-control. Your work won’t always be fun, but what matters is that you should just keep going. I also started with a 2-year writer’s course over the internet. During that time I managed to publish more than 100 of my articles in magazines and newspapers – nationally and internationally. A year after that – in 2009 – I won Miss Deaf SA. Doors and windows opened and opportunities started to pour in. I was pleasantly surprised by the turn my life took. It is now more or less six years later, and the statistics tell the story: I have done over
192 appearances at schools, events and functions as a motivational speaker and guest of honour during the last six years. Thanks to the drama classes I took during high school, I learnt how to control my voice and how to get over my fear of public speaking. And thanks to the numerous articles I wrote, as well as the writer’s course I did for two years, two of my books have been published in 2012 and 2014. And a third one is on its way this year. Looking back, I now realise that everybody needs to start somewhere. Be it amongst the shelves of the quiet library or the bustling activity amongst chefs, managers and customers. That’s where I started. And yet I ended up in a completely different place. If you had told me a few years back that this is where I’d be today, I would’ve laughed in your face and said, “Are you nuts? There’s no way I can do all that!” Even though I don’t live in a pink castle, and even though I don’t always wake up looking like Barbie (and I’m no longer blonde; I’m a redhead now), I know that my life is in the Lord’s hands. I can be content with where I am today. All I need to do is make sure that I am doing what I can, today and tomorrow. The future belongs only to the Lord. Maybe you know where you want to end up. You will most likely start at the bottom. Eventually you will work your way up. It might look grey and unwelcoming at first, and it might discourage you. The key is not to get impatient. Get a picture in your mind of where you want to be a in a few years’ time, and start making choices that compliments that picture. Enjoy the ride – life is full of surprises and it might take you somewhere you never thought you’d be…
Education
Harnessing the power of online teaching for a personalized learning experience, Boston City Campus & Business College is proud to announce its affiliation with American GED Testing Service with the intention to provide more South Africans with a Grade 12 equivalency certificate. “Today it has become critical to obtain a high school certificate, without it the likelihood of landing a quality, successful career is nearly impossible. For example at retail stores like McDonalds, even flipping a burger patty requires a matric certificate,” says Ari Katz, the CEO of Boston. Katz adds that for young people entering the workforce for the first time, the GED certificate assures future employers that the employee has attained a required level of competency. For older adults, the GED may allow them to move to a better paying, more secure workplace position. Since many companies have instituted policies that all employees must have matric or equivalent, some existing employees now have to attain their grade 12 equivalence in order to keep their jobs. “This GED programme provides them with the ideal opportunity to continue earning while they learn, and complete the grade 12 equivalence”, says Katz. The good news is that getting this all-important credential doesn’t have to be an arduous, time consuming process. “Too many people who don’t have a grade 12 equivalence certificate are discouraged by the thought of taking up schooling again. They feel they’ll be wasting time and effort. The thought of sitting in a classroom of teenagers doesn’t sit comfortably with them either! This definitely isn’t the case when registering at Boston. Our students get their GED credential by studying at one of our 44 campuses or online, and this can be done by studying for just a few hours a week for eleven months,” says Katz. In addition, through the customized and monitored learning curriculum designed to help students reach their fastest learning speed, the whole process of studying is streamlined to deliver success. “For us it’s important that all our students succeed and we try
to achieve this by making things as easy as possible for them. Forget about the one-size-fits-all classroom setup, with Boston everything a student needs is online-teaching, practice tests, books and tutors; and tutors monitor student progress continually making sure no-one falls by the wayside,” adds Katz. One of the greatest advantages of the GED system is that learners study one subject at a time. They master their studies in that subject before attempting the exam. They then write the exam and move on to the next subject. This allows learners to be fully focused and immersed in the subject they are studying, again increasing the success rate dramatically. Once students have completed their test preparations, the next step is to take the GED test in which learners assess their academic skills and knowledge in the basic subject areas of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Because the learners are closely monitored, they will only book their final examinations when their test scores are up to speed. This vastly increases the final result, practically ensuring a pass in the final exam. Most learners will want to further their studies, once they have had a taste of success with online academics, and they can then take the next step by completing some admin with HESA, and apply to study further at any of South Africa’s tertiary institutions. Ultimately, having successfully completed a GED test enables students of any age to reach a higher platform of educational achievement and to gain numerous personal, financial and social benefits. Angela, a student at Boston says, “I found the course very easy to follow, the way they have structured it, with the virtual classes is amazing. The service from Boston is exceptional, my questions are answered immediately, and there is always support when I need it.” “Various studies have shown us that because the GED sets the wheel in motion to future achievement academically and financially, GED-holders have more future earning potential throughout their lifetimes. Handin-hand with financial stability come the benefits of a healthy bank account and good credit,” concludes Katz.

winner successful
Winners and successful people are seen as the same thing. If you are a winner, you are seen as successful; and vice versa. The online Merriam Webster dictionary defines winning as “a very good, successful person or thing”. It goes on by explaining that one who wins is “one who is successful, especially through praiseworthy ability and hard work”, and “one who wins admiration”. Success is one of those concepts that can mean different things to different people. Some people define success as being the best at what they do: the end result of a desired end. But the trick is: How do you measure success? I have asked family members, friends and colleagues what success means to them in work and life in general. Not surprisingly, their feedback represented a whole list of possibilities, but the ones that came up frequently can be roughly divided into materialistic and subjective things. For some, success is measurable in terms of a huge compensation package; the size of their bank account or house; their job title or the size of their office; the car they drive and the lavish holidays they can afford. To others, the terms “success” and “money” are not interchangeable; and the focus for them is more on the subjective and noble matters, such as satisfaction, happiness, the joy of
in life
helping and giving to others… Everybody wants to be a winner and to be successful in life. However, while some hope success will find them, there are those who create their own success in a conscious and methodical way – the trait of a successful person. They always find a way to maximise their potential, even though they are not necessarily more talented than others. A great man once said: “One has to decide where one wants to be within five years of one’s life. Then, you have to read the books and hang out with the people who will take you there!” This remark made an impression on me many years ago and therefore, over the years, I have consciously observed a number of people who are widely regarded as successful human beings; and I have read many books about them and ones they wrote. I consciously looked for the common denominator that they all have that defines a winner and a successful person; and what I discovered was that not one of them (to my knowledge) achieved what they did for the money. They are extremely proud of the quality of their workplace and excellence of their services. When they die, they will leave the world as a better place than what they found it! What I know for sure, is that no-one can take any of their money and belongings to the grave or to heaven. The Bible reminds us that Jesus,
Attitude during His time on earth, made it clear that “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” I do not think He meant that money is evil in itself, but rather the way we see and use money! This is where the true danger of money lies. Robin Sharma says: “One of the primary ways we can change our lives and show up fully as leaders, is to build awareness around the things that truly count. The more conscious you can become about your priorities, the more positive changes will occur in your life. Limiting beliefs, false assumptions and negative habits begin to lose their hold over you when they are placed into the light of awareness.”
If we can learn to apply all (or at least some) of these principles we will truly get to live the blessed life of God. We will become successful and winners, but this success comes from God alone, and no man can revoke it

SALES MADE SIMPLE
By Fergus Ferguson
No matter what your product or service is, you have to sell to stay in business. So you might as well make up your mind now to become a winner at the sales game
S
o how do you convert a prospect into a customer? That is the milliondollar question that has eluded so many sales people over the years. Yet it shouldn’t. Selling is simple. To really get to understand how you can dramatically improve your selling skills, it’s necessary to first understand what selling is. Selling is nothing more than helping people to buy - professionally. The key word here is professionally. Professionalism is the hallmark of a great sales person. The more professional you appear, the more prospects will listen to what you have to say. People like dealing with experts in their field. They want good advice before buying. They are afraid of being caught by some clever sales person whose only interest is to make money. Being professional isn’t difficult. All it takes is a genuine desire to help others to buy and paying attention to detail in the following areas: • Developing a good sales kit. • Dressing well. • Always being on time. • Keeping in touch with your prospects. • Doing your homework. • Keeping testimonials.
• • • • • •
Building a rapport. Finding out what is most important to your prospect. Always following up. Asking for referrals. Saying thank you. Being consistent.
Observe these rules and you will outshine the vast majority of sales people. Also to note that to sell is not to tell, it’s to ask questions to establish a need. Without a need for your product or service you are wasting your time. Another important aspect of selling is to establish exactly who your target market is. Who are you trying to sell to? Failure to answer this will lead to a poor sales conversion rate. Knowing your target market will also enable you to communicate in a way that your prospects can relate to. What’s important to understand is that a buying decision is based on a mixture of fact and emotion which is due to human nature. What you need to work out is what percentage is based on fact and what percentage on emotion? On average it is 20% logic to 80% emotion. This is vital to know if you want to be successful in sales.

Your Praise
May
be ever on our lips! By Mignionette Fair
Thank you…those must be two of the smallest words that can make the biggest difference. We often get hurt or offended because those little words aren’t said. Oh, you washed the dishes and hubby didn’t say thank you? The horror! Or you went out of your way to help someone in need and they didn’t thank you? What’s that feeling creeping up in your heart… maybe hurt or offense?

W
ell, imagine how God must feel! How many times have you asked Him for something and then not thanked Him when He gives it to you? And even when it’s not exactly what you hoped for – do you still thank Him? Do you praise and thank Him even during the tough times? The lyrics from the song Turn It Up by Planetshakers say “Our praise goes up, Your rain comes down”. This is exactly what happens when we praise God no matter what our circumstances are. His rain comes down to give life to our dead situations when our praise ascends before His throne. King David also knew to praise God before the breakthrough, before the blessing – just to praise Him because He is worthy. In 2 Samuel 6:12-15 we read how King David brought the Ark of the Lord into Jerusalem: “Now King David was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.” King David praised God even before He blessed Jerusalem as He had blessed ObedEdom’s household. He praised Him because He was and is God. This means that we
should praise God during the winter season, when it looks like there is no outcome, when you feel like you can’t go on any longer. That is the time to praise God, because you know He is faithful and He will deliver you. Psalm 30:11-12 says: “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness that my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever.” I want to encourage you – whatever you are going through, start praising God before the breakthrough. An example of this can be found in Daniel 3:16-18: “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Those three men decided to praise God – even if He did not deliver them. What an example!
So like David in Psalm 34:1, let us say: “I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” And I can promise you…God’s rain will pour!
