The Grand Budapest Hotel
This occurs substantially more often in The Grand Budapest Hotel and will form the basis of this study. Following 8 main characters through the film the doors have been documented including how the characters interact with them as well as the characteristics of the doors themselves.
Great Northern Close in Nottingham is home to two derelict warehouses, the James Alexander Building and the Great Northern Warehouse. Both warehouses are currently derelict with wasteland to the north of the site and the train line into Nottingham station to the south.
Comprehensive Design: Brief and Context
James Michael Brown
The area was the subject of a 2008 masterplan which proposed significant development of the land around the warehouses and renovation of the warehouses themselves.
The Great Northern Warehouse
The site for the project will be within the existing structure of the Great Northern Warehouse. The grade II listed building once operated as a corn warehouse as part of London Road station, however in more recent times the structure has become derelict due to fire and is now just four outer walls held up by scaffolding. In its current state it offers significant potential to be a landmark building for the area and the proposed masterplan.
The Great Northern Warehouse and Spa sits across the east side of existing Great Northern Warehouse. This allows the new structure to offer support to the existing warehouse, define new spaces with the wall and interact with the passing public.
Comprehensive Design: Project
The World of Wes Anderson
Throughout Wes Anderson’s work symmetry plays an role. This symmetry is often created by a central object or a character positioned in the centre of the frame. Whilst this is still the case in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Anderson will more often than not use a door or doorway to create this symmetry. This allows for everything else around the door to be asymmetrical whilst enhancing the overall symmetry of the frame and characters positioned within the shot. In a number of cases these doorways are significant in the overarching story at times being used to create a sense of urgency or to build tension.
The Great Northern Warehouse Hotel + Spa
The hotel occupies the central volume with rooms attached to the outer walls to make the most of the views in the area. On the top floor is a restaurant positioned to benefit from these views. The hotel offers a mixture of private guest/member facilities, a spa, lounge, garden and function rooms, and facilities for the general public, such as a cafe, restaurant and outdoor space located within the wall. The main volume acts as the circulation space to the guest room. The space consists of a void with walkways and stairs connecting to the rooms. This void offers a direct line of sight from the lobby to the sky. On entering the lobby visitors will have a direct connection to the existing warehouse with views past the concierge desk of a section of the damaged south wall. The project has been positioned within the 2008 masterplan to show how the hotel will sit within the wider context.

Focussing on the eight main characters of the film the documentation process includes a 1:20 scale drawing of the doors along with detailing their properties and behaviours. These properties include: - the time and part when the door appears. - the location and year the door appears in. - a description of the doors appearance. Along with behaviours including: - is the door centred in the shot. - does the door open or is it fixed. - is the door interacted with. - do they show any anomalies or inconsistencies.

Check-Point 19 Prison Cells Gustave passes the cell doors with a food trolley before reaching the cell of Pinky (123) where the beginnings of a plan to escape are formulated. This plan is then put into action as Gustave and his cell mates escape through the floor (146). Later Henckels is seen exiting the hole after the escape has been discovered. Her he confronts Jopling as to why he is in the prison and if he knows about the disappearance of Deputy Kovacs. The cell appears to change floor multiple times. As Gustave pushes the food trolley he is on the first floor but once he gets to the cell he is on the ground floor. When Henckels and Jopling meet the cell numbers indicate that it is now on the third floor. As the film is for the most part Zero’s account of events these inconsistencies could be attributed to the fact that Zero was not present for the events that took place within Check-Point 19.

hotel The Great Northern Warehouse is situated on relatively level ground. The topography rises to the north with Nottingham Castle, the Lace Market and Green’s Mill sitting on high land overlooking the site. To the south is the River Trent with Nottingham Canal joining and running to the west of the site.
Located within 10 minutes walk of the station the site is ideal for commuters and visitors to the area. Nottingham station also provides the central point for the Nottingham Tram Network which will link to the proposed HS2 station at Toton. The Great Northern Warehouse is located approximately 15 minutes from the old market square in the city centre.
Areas to the south of the river have a high risk of flooding with areas to the north considered to be at lower risk. This extends beyond the site to the area that was the subject of the 2008 masterplan although the site itself is not on land at risk of flooding.

The immediate are around the site is currently wasteland with a number of buildings having been demolished within the past 20 years. The Great Northern Warehouse and the adjoining James Alexander Warehouse have been empty since a fire in 1998. The adjacent station which also sat empty for a number of years has been renovated and is now a Heath Club and Spa. To the south of the site are a number of sporting venues including Trent Bridge Cricket Ground with the National Ice Centre also located within a short walk to the north.
In the Nottingham Local Plan published in 2014 three areas were identified as Regeneration Zones. The site is located in within the Eastside Regeneration Zone and next to the Waterside Regeneration Zone.
The Great Northern Warehouse, the James Alexander Warehouse and the surrounding wasteland were the site for a 2004 outline planning application for a masterplan of the area with a detailed materplan approved in 2008.
The Eastside Regeneration Zone the area has been targeted to provide mixed use facilities including offices, retail space and residential units.
This application including retaining the grade II listed Great Northern warehouse and the James Alexander Warehouse for residential use with a number of new units for use as offices, retail and residential with a carpark located to the south of the warehouses and the Great Northern Warehouse opening out onto a green public space.
The area is also designated as Nottingham’s Creative Quarter.
The main shopping area of the city centre is located between the Victoria Shopping Centre and the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre with the Old Market Space providing a public space located between the two.

The Great Northern Close runs along the north side of the warehouse, however the area in front of the warehouse is currently inaccessible due to fencing prevent trespassers from entering the buildings.
The site sits on lower ground in the area and is overlooked by large parts of the city centre. The ground is relatively level with the area immediately north of the site slightly lower and at low risk of flooding. The land the warehouses sits on is not considered to be at risk of flooding.
To the south of the site are the railway lines connecting to the station and a small area of sidings. The main access to the site will be provided by London Road and Manvers Street connecting to The Great Northern Close.

Shadow Analysis Inside the existing walls will be an external area. By analyse the shadows at different times of day and year the ideal space can be identified for this external space.

Inside the north wall there is an area in direct sunlight for large parts of the year except for the winter months. The missing parts of the wall along the south wall allows for a greater amount of sunlight to reach inside the walls.
et
tre rs S
For this particular project it will be more beneficial for the new construction to be on the east side allowing for the evening sunlight to reach the area inside the existing walls and into the proposed building itself.
nve
Consideration needs to be taken as to the position of any new construction. Creating a new structure to the east side will dramatically decrease the light into the existing structure in the earlier hours of the day. If a new structure was positioned to the west side then the evening sunlight will be blocked.
The area in direct sunlight could be increased by raising the floor of the open space. This will allow for more sunlight into the area all year round. Summer Solstice 09:00

Comprehensive Design: Project
The Great Northern Warehouse and Spa sits across the east side of existing Great Northern Warehouse. This allows the new structure to offer support to the existing warehouse, define new spaces with the wall and interact with the passing public.
