Pr oclamation on I r ish-Amer ican H er itage Month, 2024 Dur ing I r ish-Amer ican Her itage M onth, we honor our I r ish ancestor s, all those who car r y on their legacies, and the values that have always bound I reland and the United States together. These values ? including deter mination, decency, and dignity ? have been passed down from gener ation to gener ation in families like my own and have been gr afted into the Amer ican char acter. L ast year, I had the honor of visiting the home of some of my I r ish ancestor s, including the Blewitts of County M ayo and the Finnegans of County L outh. As I tr aveled across I reland, I lear ned the tr ue meaning of the Gaelic expression, ?a hundred thousand welcomes.? I was reminded that ever ything between I reland and Amer ica r uns deep ? from our histor y and sor row to our future and j oy. But more than anything, hope is what beats in the hear ts of all of our

people.

For centur ies ? even dur ing times of dar kness and despair ? hope has kept us marching for war d towar d a better future. I t is what led so many of our I r ish ancestor s to leave the only place they had ever called home and seek a new beginning in the United States. I t is what drove gener ations of I r ish immigr ants to help build the foundations of Amer ica with gr it and per sistence, even as they endured discr imination and were denied oppor tunity. I t is what continues to dr ive tens of millions of I r ish Amer icans across our countr y to stand up for greater dignity, liber ty, and possibilities for all. As we celebr ate the 100th anniver sar y of United States-I r ish diplomatic relations this year, hope remains the bedrock of our par tner ship, as evidenced by our wor k together to stand with the br ave people of Ukr aine in the face of Russian aggression, combat the climate cr isis, and advance wor ker s?r ights across both of our nations. I n the year s ahead, I look for war d to strengthening the par tner ship and fr iendship between the people of I reland and Amer ica even fur ther. United by histor y, her itage, and hope, nothing is beyond our reach. NOW, THEREFORE, I , JOSEPH R. BI DEN JR., President of the United States of Amer ica, by vir tue of the author ity vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim M arch 2024 as I r ish-Amer ican Her itage M onth. I call upon all Amer icans to celebr ate the achievements and contr ibutions of I r ish Amer icans to our Nation with appropr iate

ceremonies, activities, and progr ams. I N WI TNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of February, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the I ndependence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

Kn eecap, a h ip-h op t r io h ailin g f r om West Belf ast This increasingly popular Irish band has been causing a st ir across t he realms of music, film, and polit ics lat ely. M embers M o Chara, M óglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, have been growing in popularit y since t he release of t heir debut single CEARTA (Irish for Right s) in 2017. W hen t he police arrived, Bap managed t o escape, but his companion was apprehended. A much-ant icipat ed new album FINE ART is due out soon and t he band complet ed a semi-aut obiographical film called KNEECAP, t he first Irish language film shown at t he Sundance Film Fest ival where it earned t he Audience Award. Irish Cent ral calls it a "new black-comedy drama about t he cult ure of post -Troubles Belfast ." The film co-st ars M ichael Fassbender as M óglaí Bap?s dad, and includes Gerry Adams, who, by t he way, denies ever being a member of Kneecap. "Small Things Like These" A new film, Small Things Like These, produced by and star r ing Cillian M ur phy, made histor y in Febr uar y by becoming the fir st I r ish film chosen as the opening film at the Ber lin Film Festival. The film is based on the eponymous novella by Claire K eegan, who also wrote Foster, the novella upon which Oscar-nominated Colm Bair éad?s An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) is based. K eegan?s Small Things Like These has been r ightly received as political fiction (it won the Or well Pr ize in 2022). I t explores the theme of the incarcer ation of tens of thousands of women and gir ls by the Catholic church that occur red in I reland from the 1820s r ight until the 1990s ? for instance, singer-songwr iter Sinéad O?Connor was ?sent away?. The fig leaf behind which the Catholic church and its enabler s hid was that the institutions to which the women were sent were cor rective refuges. The tr uth was that the women were slave-labourer s in laundr ies. They washed the laundr y of local businesses while the nuns refor ming them kept the profits. The classic pretext for sending a woman away was br illiantly visualised in a previous film about M agdalene L aundr ies and expressed in folk music. Peter M ullan?s The Magdalene Sisters uses the song ?The Well Below the Valley?to a devastating effect in its opening sequences. As a pr iest at a wedding pounds his bodhr án and sings the song, a young woman is deceived by her cousin into enter ing a backroom where her cousin r apes her. When she confides what has happened to her a chain of whisper s reaches the pr iest who makes the deter mination: she will be sent away. M ullan?s film became almost a cinematic fulfillment of the stor y told in ?The Well Below the Valley?, in which a ?fallen?woman has been systematically abused and impregnated by the men in her family. As the song goes:

There's two of them by your Uncle Dan At the well below the valley o

Green grows the lily o Right among the bushes o? Another two by your brother John? Another two by your Father dear M ullan tells the stor y of The Magdalene Sisters from the point of view of the incarcer ated women, whereas Claire K eegan?shor t master piece unfolds through the eyes of Bill Fur long. Owner of a coal shop in New Ross, Fur long deliver s coal to the local convent where he witnesses that the women are not housed but held in captivity ? the nun tur ns the key when she leaves the laundr y, there is cut glass set in concrete on top of its high walls. He is distur bed by what he has seen and by an encounter with one of

the inmates who ur ges him to help her to escape so that she can throw her self in the r iver. A tense conver sation with his wife ensues later at home. Fur long?s wife, conver sant in local gossip, knows about the fate of the women in the laundr y. Yet she recoils from breaking the code of omer tà about it. Even as late as 1985, the year in which the stor y is set, she is ter r ified of the consequences of speaking about the cr imes of the church and the complicity of the society it dominates. The Fur longs are in business dur ing an economic depression, and their young family depends on their staying in business for its living. Back at the convent to deliver coal before Chr istmas, Fur long witnesses a still more tr aumatic scene: he discover s a woman, the mother of a 14-week-old baby, locked in the coal shed among her own excrement. When the convent?s M other Super ior enter s the scene, she pretends that the young woman got lost ? per haps playing hide and seek ? and that she should now come in and have a war m bath. The head nun senses danger, aman had glimpsed the reality of the laundr y regime. She insists with all her force that he come in for tea and cake dur ing which she references Fur long?s daughter s and their schooling: ?Won?t they all soon find themselves next door, in time to come, God willing?.

The M other Super ior does not even need to threaten Fur long that his daughter s will not get a place at the convent school, next door to the laundr y, if he speaks out. She passes him her annual Chr istmas car d with a 50 pound note that, this time, has a dimension of buying his silence.

VIEW Conclusion: As a woman of the town later says to Fur long, only a wall separ ates ?that place?[the laundr y] and the convent school. The townspeople know what side of the wall they want to stay on, one side represents advancement and the other r uination, but Fur long is tor mented by the mor al compromise that silence entails. I n a precise r umination that cannot be conveyed fully in a screen adaptation, Fur long later broods that he had not asked about the young woman?s baby; and that was ?the one thing she had asked him to do ? and how he had taken the money and left her there at the table with nothing before her and the breast milk leaking under the little car digan and staining her blouse, and how he?d gone on, like a hypocr ite, to M ass?. K eegan br ings the reader fur ther into the psyche of her protagonist and, by proxy, the denials and ser vitude of I reland. Fur long asks: ?Why were the things that were closest so often har dest to see??? a mediation that encapsulates the entire novella and the condition of a society that helped to per petuate the cr uelty. The film adaptation of Small Things Like These apparently took seed in between takes of Oppenheimer when M ur phy spoke to M att Damon and per suaded him to collabor ate to producer the film. I t is a smaller scale film than the biopic of the ?father of the nuclear bomb?. Yet the har rowing stor y of

or dinar y lives destroyed by institutional abuse and societal cowar dice makes it an essential contr ibution for a full reckoning with I reland?s past as well as a clar ion call to speak out against inj ustices in our own time.
