The View from Ireland Gam e Of Th r on es By M au r ice Fit zpat r ick Wr iting in The Express about the visit of K ing Char les I I I to Nor ther n I reland, for mer DUP leader Ar lene Foster denounced the BBC for its focus on Sinn Féin. She maintained that the broadcaster made it seem that the visit was about Sinn Féin and ?not mar king the death of our sovereign and the fir st visit of her successor ?. TUV (Tr aditional Unionist Voice) leader Jim Allister chimed in a similar manner, ar guing that the broadcaster ?gave elevation and promotion to Sinn Féin?. The Br itish Royal family?s show of force after the queen?s death was decades in the planning. K nown as ?L ondon Br idge/Oper ation Shamrock?, officials of the royal family and Br itish civil ser vants had progr ammed in detail the manoeuvres that K ing Char les I I I would make across the UK . The method deployed was a for m of soft coercion exercised through enforced handshakes with gover ning power s in the UK ; the obj ective was to augment the royal family?s stature and ensure the per petuation of the institution. What was uncer tain, until the last minute, was how Sinn Féin would respond, given the republican identity it claims to have. That was why the political power that Sinn Féin bur nished when Char les visited Belfast? the Fir st M inister in waiting, the Speaker and the M ayor of Belfast are all member s of Sinn Féin, and all tur ned out to greet him war mly? was difficult for the DUP to stomach. By dominating the welcome for Char les I I I , Sinn Féin usur ped a unionist prerogative. That fact was so remar kable that it almost bur ied any memor y of Sinn Féin?s stated republican stance against the monarchy. I t also ser ved to obscure Sinn Féin?s for mer stance against Char les due to his incumbency as Colonel-in-Chief of the Par achute Regiment (infamous in I reland as the br anch of the Br itish Ar my that per petuated the Bloody Sunday mur der s). M aybe the BBC did give dispropor tionate focus to Sinn Fein?s love-in with K ing Char les I I I . However, what Foster could not br ing her self to say is that her gr ipe has nothing to do with the BBC or any other media outlet. The ire that dares not speak its name in unionist circles is the obvious favour itism that Sinn Féin received from the newly crowned Br itish monarch (Char les inher ited none of his late mother ?s discretion). I t has induced j ealousy and panic in Foster and other s. The myth of the union in I reland was constr ucted to debar the possibility of I r ish nationalism gaining a higher status than unionism in the

Samhain

eyes of the Br itish r uling elite. I t did not help that the new-broom Br itish Pr ime M inister L iz Tr uss pr aised the Queen as being ?the ver y spir it of Great Br itain?(Ulster Unionists insist on ?the UK ?since that includes Nor ther n I reland). Foster ?s response is a good example of how putatively conciliator y gestures can awaken hostility in someone who has something to gain from enmity. The DUP and the TUV miss the boycotting and petulance that attended Sinn Féin?s response to the death of the Queen M other in 2002. I n October 2018, when M ar y L ou M cDonald presented her self as president of Sinn Féin at a specialAr dFheis in Dublin, she ended her speech with the wor ds ?up the rebels?. No such squawk could be hear d from Sinn Fein when K ing Char les I I I gr aced them with his company. Twenty year s ago, Sinn Féin upheld a rej ectionist tr adition whereas today it leads the char ge in embr acing the monarchy. I f Sinn Féin would quote from the Easter 1916 leader James Connolly?s ar ticle, ?The Br itish M onarchy I s an Affront to Democr acy?, it would suithar dlineunionist leader s much better. Responding to the visit of K ing Geor ge V to I reland in 1911, Connolly wrote: ?the occasion will be utilised to make propaganda on behalf of royalty and ar istocr acy against the oncoming forces of democr acy and National freedom?. Sinn Féin is well ahead of unionists in gaming the benefits of their relationship with the monarchy. The par ty has decided to pay the pr ice of suppressing dissent about the tr avesty of royalty and silencing cr iticism such as Connolly?s. I t does so under the banner of ?matur ity?and ?leader ship?. The nar r ative weaved around the peace process in Nor ther n I reland has been responsible for the production and promulgation of such deadening nor ms. Evidently, it would have been quite possible to behave decently when the queen died and yet uphold a basic pr inciple that any republican wor thy of the name would obser ve: the absolute rej ection of monarchy. To hew Connolly?s statement to contempor ar y circumstances, the occasion of Queen Elizabeth?s passing was utilised to make propaganda on behalf of royalty and ar istocr acy against the toler ance of free speech that cr iticises the validity of the Br itish royal family. For example, much vitr iol was directed at Glasgow Celtic Football Club fans for refusing to obser ve a minute of silence to mar k the death of the queen. Continued o next page

What was not emphasised is that Celtic fans tar geted the institution r ather than the deceased. They clapped in response to the banner and refr ain ?I f you hate the royal family clap your hands?. Denouncing those fans, for mer Glasgow Ranger s manager Gr aeme Souness failed to find a mor al rebuff. I nstead, he found it anti-commercial: ?Celtic now have a maj or problem because if you?re a maj or company looking to sponsor a team in Br itain or Scotland, would you consider Celtic anymore?? Despite Sinn Féin?s new-found affection for royalty, there was dissent aplenty expressed about the Br itish royal family in the past month. I n an act of lèse-maj esté, the disgr aced Pr ince Andrew was booed as he walked down the Royal M ile in Edinbur gh with his family. Protester s also confronted Char les in Wales. As a young scientist, L aur a Thomas-Walter s, said: ?I n the 21st centur y in a democr atic countr y, an unelected head of state has no place. I t?s an antiquated system of class oppression and classinequalities?. Pr ince William tr avelled to Belfast with his wife, K ate, where she shook hands with a woman behind a bar r icade who infor med her : ?I reland belongs to the I r ish?. Yet how many non-royalist I r ish people (the vast maj or ity ofus) have spoken fr ankly about the affront that the monarchy is to democr acy in response to the or gy of royalism since September 8th? The gr ip of Br itain?s elite on free speech regar ding their royal family remains ver y tight, and it is now aided by the Police, Cr ime, Sentencing and Cour ts Act 2022 that enabled the police to ar rest young people for asking (about Char les) ?Who elected him??That r hetor ical question prompts another that we should be asking on this side of the I r ish Sea: do we elect I r ish republicans to acquiesce with and

validate royalist agendas such as Oper ation Shamrock in our name?

Dan ce of M ask s an d Bon f ir es Third Final Installment By Gr eg Pat r ick He seemed to see the tomb at a distance and sur really the landscape had changed. There were more trees and much younger ones. He alsorealisedhe was far from alone. He found himself following a crowd of people heading for the site. They were gar bed in per iod clothing, ancient-looking. Their masked faces were lit in cr imson. ?Excuse me. I s this gather ing a protest?? he asked. No answer. They seemed neither to see or hear him. He donned a ceremonial mask on impulse and mingled with the procession. They seemed oblivious to his presence. He cr inged as a hor n sounded in a throaty sonorous br ay ending in a shr ill quaver. He cr ied out as he was j ostled and swept away in the momentum of the crowd that became a torch-lit procession. Then he saw her. M aeve. Her hood had been dr awn back and red hair cascaded down her back. She wore the diadem now. She rode a char iot, gar landed, and gowned in a pale robe. She was hailed by the crowd and resplendently illuminate by bonfires and torches.

Page 13

collapsed in a shower of spar ks to a collective gasp from the crowd. ?L et the r itual of sacr ifice continue. Only the finest will suffice. M aeve daughter of Aoife?, you are summoned hither !? the Archdr uid commanded. She was beckoned for th by the archdr uid who stood like a gaunt spectre in flowing robe. She seemed so fr ail and vulner able then like a moth in an aer ial dance with the light. The war r ior s par ted r anks and she seemed to glide r ather than str ide between the torch-bear ing figures. The Dr uids chanted in solemn bar itone as he placed a chalice to gather the blood beneath her neck and drew a j eweled dagger. Niall pushed his way to her and stepped across the circle as the tempo of the chanting intensified. Only then did they see him. ?Hold!? the ArchDr uid commanded as he stepped between M aeve and the descending dagger. Niall was immediately encircled by r anks of war r ior s bear ing or nate oblong bronze shields scr awled with swir ling spir al patter ns. The moonbeams gleamed off var nished bronze helms and br andished swor ds and spear s. Their faces were streaked with blue war paint. Niall was swar med and gr asped by pale-robed and hooded figures, r itually-masked in flayed human and animal skins. A Dr uidess pointed an over grown finger hooked like a r aven?s talon.

?M aeve!? he cr ied after her.

?Br ing him hither ??

Her eyes were spellbound and tr ansfixed. An ar r ay of pale hooded figures silhouetted against roar ing bonfires awaited. Their cowled heads were wreathed in holly and gr ipping r itual sickles and mistletoe.

She caressed his face with the ?claw? pr ickinghischeek with it. A tr ickle ofblood began.

?Dr uids!? he gasped in awed recognition.

?Who do you think you are? To challenge the will of the gods?? ?Niall of K ilkea, son of Cor mac.?

When theyspokeit was in an ancient I r ish that only he as an antiquities scholar could under stand. A blind-folded dr uid pointed with a sickle and people were dr awn from the crowd.

" Why do you do this? I t is an honour to be chosen by the gods," M aeve explained in a dreamy voice.

?Our crops are bar ren, our cattle star ve, a malady has r avaged our clan. Our land is accur sed by the wr aith of the gods...they must be appeased with blood!? he cr ied.

The Archdr uid seemed a gaunt wizened appar ition confronting him, enshrouded in a flowing robe. His ar ms spread in af lour ish, his hands r aised in supplication. He wrenched two torches from their hands to hold them at bay.

?Aye while the nobles feast on mead boar and stags!? someone in the crowd called out defiantly.

War r ior s closed in with spear s.

?Tr ust the will of the gods!? the Archdr uid declared. ?L et the r itual of sacr ifice commence,? he cr ied. Sunken-cheeked children ver ging on emaciation watched sadly, clutching their elder s. The chosen were her ded and forced at spear-point to climb ladder s into stor ied compar tments in the wooden giant. A hooded figure approached with a torch. He saw ter r ified faces illuminated. The torch was touched to the wooden giant igniting it. Reveler s painted in ser pentine blue patter ns danced around the wicker man in atavistic r apture. War r ior s beat their swor ds against their shields in percussion as the r itual reached its climax. Cr ies of ter ror and begging tur ned to anguished screams as the captives bur ned alive. The flaming abattoir blazed, bathing the onlooker s in almost blinding cr imson light. Eventually the last agonised scream ceased to be replaced by the roar of the flames. The wicker man

?Stay behind me M aeve,? Niall ur ged. " Alas his tr icker y will not avail him. Har k. His tor tured screams will be testimony to our devotion to our gods for the outr age of his affront. A boy on bent knee offered an assor tment of hooked and bar bed instr uments to the dr uids. The Arch Dr uid wear ing a mask of flayed skin like a gr isly executioner mask confronted Niall. Niall suddenly lunged in and lit the dr uid's robes, enveloping his assailant in flame. As if oblivious to the fires consuming him, the ArchDr uid strode towar ds him, seemed to float phantasmaly towar ds him like a flaming red ghost, clutching a sacr ificial dagger and scythe. He hooked Niall?s ar m and lunged at M aeve. Niall shielded her with his body, feeling her tender touch around his waist. With gr im finality he gr asped the bur ning Dr uid?s throat as blades lacer ated

Page 14

Haunted by flashbacks of himself tr ying to resuscitate her in the after math of the accident, he forced himself to endure. ?Yield your weapons. No mor tal can defeat death!? a dr uid challenged. ?Can?t I now?? Niall lashed out again at his assailants bloodily. ?I f you tr uly love her, you will relinquish her. You will let her go,? the ArchDr uid ur ged. Provoked by the hauntingly familiar wor ds he dug his finger s into the dr uid?s throat as he thr ashed, ignor ing his follower s who slashed and slashed tear ing his clothes and flesh to shreds. ?Niall? Niall! Niall wake up! L et go this instant!? He found himself gr ipping the professor ?s throat ?Unhand me at once! Wake up Niall. Wake up. You fell asleep over your books again. You must have been having quite the nightmare.? ?M aeve...you...you?re not dead? ?You were having a nightmare...? she repeated in her lilting Connemar a brogue. ?I assure you that after that incident the nightmares for you have only begun,? the professor growled r ubbing his sore neck. Niall ignored him.

Niall seemed neither to hear nor care. The professor snar led as he watched them walk away together laughing blissfully in the br ight mor ning. Then regaining his composure, the bitter professor tur ned and fur tively made his way to the tomb?s entr ance. He unlocked the chains secur ing the gr ate iron gate, that only he had the key to. And who would suspect the devoted caretaker of the r uins, he smiled cunningly to himself. Who would see past the mask and façade? He would gather the cache of golden ar tifacts he had hidden in the deepest cor ner of the bur ial chamber, looted on Samhain eve itself from the ancient dead. ?You won?t tell willyouold gir l?? he j okingly asked a skeleton. I t was good he was a man of science not super stition, he told himself. ?One I over looked? ? he smiled greedily. He began to pr y a r ing from her finger. He looked up realising he wasn?t alone. He saw the outline of a gir l confronting him. She r aised a finger to her lips. ?Shhh? ? ?You there!? He lunged towar ds her. Suddenly the chamber shuddered and began to shower dust, then stones. The entr ance caved in, bur ying him alive. He coughed dusting himself off in the after math. ?Where is the emer gency switch??

He felt her disbelievingly in awe?

He cur sed as he fumbled in the dar k.He gasped as the light came on and he was confronted by a pale -faced figure dressed in authentic Celtic per iod costume.

He embr aced her passionately.

?Oh, dear me. Haha! you gave me a fr ight there. A

?You are? . alr ight??

?Wow? What?s gotten into you. I t?s only been since yester day? .? His lips met her s tender ly then passionately. ?Umm? wow Niall. What?s gotten into you. Haha.? ?I missed you...? ?M issed me? I saw you j ust last night...at the pub... Feeling alr ight love?? ?For once...in a long time...? ?Come on. L et's get out of here gr ab some coffee...? ?Per haps a r abies shot instead of espresso might be in or der,? the professor sneered. ?Sor r y professor...Yes...yes sor r y...? ?I 'll dr ive...? M aeve offered. ?You know, let's walk instead...please.? A dream? yes? yes that?s all it was? ?What's that blue paint on your face? You weren?t attending a par ty?? he was questioned suspiciously by the professor. Niall shr ugged him off. ?M r. Collins you are fired.?

trespasser ? Well, we will sor t that out later with the author ities. Wait? where are you going young lady? Stop. There are sensitive ar tifacts and fr agile.? She was leading him into the labyr inthine depths of the tomb? lur ing him. He stopped suddenly. ?Where...where am I ? where did she go? Clumsy inter ns, to not seal the entr ance from collapse. No matter. They would realise I am missing I t would not be long before I will be rescued,? he reassured himself. He lit an emer gency lanter n. He was in the bur ial chamber ?The red room? he called it. The sacr ificial chamber. He gloated to himself at how clever he had orchestr ated his plot. They were all so easily exploited? the inter ns? the gullible press and donor s, funding his dig only so he could peddle the pr iceless ar tifacts from the tomb to black mar ket dealer s he had a pressing appointment with. I t wouldn?t do to be late. He would gather the ar tifacts he told himself. By then his absence would surely be noticed and rescue crews would ar r ive any moment. Then he would be on his way and a ver y wealthy man. And where were his accomplices? They were supposed to have met him here to help him load and smuggle the ar tifacts out discreetly. He found them. ?Sleeping on the j ob. I might have known. Up with you! Can?t you hear me?? They were unresponsive. Then he saw their ghastly wounds, fresh and bleeding out. They had been sacr ificed. Then he noticed something. There was a note pinned with an ancient dagger. He could j ust decipher it. The same wor ds were wr itten on the walls in red letter s. ?Gr ave robber,? he read with trembling hands. Then he noticed eer ie beady lights seemed to constellate the walls in myr iads. Eyes belonging to countless spider s emer ging then from the crevices in a hor de as if oozing from the walls like a reopened wound gushing. ?So many of them!? He held up the light to keep them at bay. They at fir st shr ank from it. Then as the light began to flicker out and dar kness filled the tomb, they closed in. He backed away only to thr ash violently as he was snared in the webs, like ghostly banner s enshrouding the walls. Shar p clawed legs pr icked him tor turously with venomed fang. His screams echoed in the confines of the tomb. His mouth frothed from the venom and he shuddered convulsively. He collapsed and the room seemed lit in an eer ie spectr al glow. Restless shadows seemed to be gr anted for m and face as if conj ured by disembodied chanting in an ancient tongue. Sacred r unes were illuminated in har sh cr imson light. He found himself encircled by robed hooded figures. One slab was vacant. He fell onto it, his ar ms splaying amid looted ar tifacts, piled like offer ings. Br azier s ignited and blades shimmered, as the figures str uck again and again with their blades. The next mor ning, the newspaper s headlined his looting and the myster ious circumstances of his gr isly demise. Niall was offered the honour of over sight of excavations. He politely declined.
