Funds raised will help Wells of Life provide safe, clean water to the people of Uganda.

Wells of life is a 501 C 3 Charity based in Laguna Beach Ca. It was founded to help solve the world water crisis. We focus solely on the country of Uganda in East Africa with a population similar to California. Twelve million of these people have no access to clean water. Wells of life took on the challenge of bringing clean water to one million of these people. We drill wells in rural communities currently lacking access to water. A community of up to 1000 people benefit from a water well which equates to $6.00 per person served for 20 years with the gift of clean drinking water. We believe this is an affordable price to ask you to pay to save a human life. As a result, children are no longer sick daily from water borne diseases and they can attend school. Women do not have to walk up to four miles daily to fetch and carry water cans weighing up to 44 pounds on their heads. When you look at what we do...we bring the gift of life for a few dollars. Our goal is to drill 1000 wells in ten years and with your help and support we will accomplish that goal.

“Providing clean water will change two lives, the person who receives the water and yours, seeing the intense suffering brought by lack of water changed my life in ways I could not have imagined. I was unable to stand idly by. I am very fortunate to be able to do this work every day”— Nick Jordan

Get Shamrocked 2014 Exceeds Expectations! Murrieta’s 3-Day Irish Music Festival Doubles Attendance from 2013 The Second Annual GetShamrocked Irish Music Festival is now in the history books and an amazing chapter for Irish Rock Music has been written for Southern California! The crowds were fantastic, albeit it was definitely a demographic that was younger than at the traditional Irish Fairs that have been most common in the recent past. The music that was presented for the most part was pure Irish/Celtic Rock and Punk Rock! The food, the libations, the vendors and the friendly folks in attendance were all incredible! The weather cooperated and was a SoCal delight.

A Conversation with Richard Riordan Part II –by James McDonough Friday the Eighteenth of July, 2014 Brentwood, California

On our first visit to Dick Riordan’s home in Brentwood, we had agreed to meet again to “flesh out the years in City Hall in Los Angeles”. After Part I was published, I called and set up the appointment for la deuxième partie. It was once again a pleasure to spend some time with LA’s most popular and productive mayor. Riordan is the epitome of everything that is (and all too often is not found) desired in a politician; honesty, integrity and a real desire to serve. Also, once again, I was ushered upstairs to his study, this time by a charming young assistant/ intern who was working for him when Hilary was on vacation. Riordan came in and both apologized for making me wait a few minutes and explained that he had a busier schedule. He graciously said, “We have about one hour, will that be enough?” I replied that I though it would and that I really appreciated his time. I also showed him my smart phone and explained that this time I had figured out the recording function. We both kind of chuckled and marveled at all the new gadgets for a couple minutes and then fairly quickly got started. What follows here is an edited transcript of our interview.

McDonough: Last time, we were discussing the axiom; IT IS EASIER TO ASK FORGIVENESS THEN TO GET PERMISSION. You gave me two examples of this axiom in action when you were mayor. Can you go over that with me again? RIORDAN: Yes, in the first weeks of my being there, we had a meeting at City Hall, with all the leaders of the fashion industry. At the end of the meeting, the owners of several companies came up to me with a problem. The issue was the tow away and parking restrictions at 3PM on weekdays. I was familiar with the restrictions because we had the same problem with parking in front of my law firm. “Mr. Mayor,” they asked, “can you do something about the parking restrictions. We frequently have the cars of clients towed and the traffic is not heavy on our street.” After the meeting, I happened to see Bill Violente, one of my Deputy Mayors and I told him of my concerns and asked him to look into the problem—to find out exactly how we could get rid of the unnecessary tow away zones. Two weeks later, Bill came to me with a 50 page plan. He explained that in 6 to 8 years, we could mitigate the problem. We would need to do studies with traffic consultants, meet with various departments, the police and engineers and God knows what else! My immediate reply was that it was not continued page 8

GetShamrocked Festival continued One of the principle organizers and the man who conceived the idea for GetShamrocked, Paul Little (Also manager at The Shamrock Irish Pub & Eatery in Murrieta) was effervescent in his comments on the event. “What else can we say, but THANK YOU to ALL of the PARTICIPANTS and to Murrieta; especially to Patrick Ellis of the Murrieta Chamber of Commerce!” Little also said, “We want to thank all of the volunteers, the bands, the sound people, EVERYONE who worked so hard to make this happen. We appreciate them a lot, we had a team that were brilliant!” Little also predicted, “GetShamrocked will grow, we have the concept to make this a World Class Event, certainly the premier Irish/Celtic Music Festival for California for many years to come.” Anne Colburn of the Irish Import Shop was a vendor and she too was delighted with being part of GetShamrocked. “It was wonderful, busy, well planned and the people who came really enjoyed themselves. The free parking and the free face painting and bounce castle for kids on Sunday was really appreciated by families.” Colburn is 100% spot on, this Irish Music Festival is without a doubt, one of the best entertainment values offered this year to the people of Southern California! Echoing Paul Little, all we can say on behalf of the Irish Arts, Irish E-Missive Weekly and the Irish Community is basically the same thing. Congratulations and KUDOS to all the bands, vendors, participants and a very special thanks to Graham Judge, Paul Little of The Shamrock, sponsor Guinness and Patrick Ellis for working so hard to make GetShamrocked a wonderful annual Irish Event!

Abac Well Well completed: 26th April 2104 Community Name: Abac District: Amuria Number of Households: 65 The Abac well was completed on 26th April 2104 and is the 347th well to be completed by Fields of Life. The well is located in Apeduru sub county in Amuria district in North Eastern Uganda where access to water is extremely limited. The nearest water source for this community was an open well which was exposed to many pathogens and therefore put a lot of lives at risk of suffering from waterborne diseases. This well will provide safe clean drinking water for 65 households with an average of 9 members per household. See related feature in this issue about upcoming Wells of Life Gala, Auction,

A Conversation with Riordan continued acceptable. Bill, I said, I am the Business Mayor. I got elected on a promise to be more receptive and to fix problems. Come back to me with a simpler plan. So about a month goes by, I had forgotten about it but I saw Bill and remembered and brought it up. Bill, I have not seen anything on my desk about the parking restriction’s problem. Mayor, It’s taken care of, was his reply. Taken care of, what do you mean?, I asked him. Well, my son and I went out the next night and we took the signs down. From that experience, I realized that it is much better to ask forgiveness than to get permission. McDonough: Thanks, Mr Mayor, that was the example that I was referring to. The second area of interest for our readers was the Northridge Earthquake. You mentioned last time that the quake was one of the greatest natural disasters in US History, and that you were able to move quickly by applying your particular brand of decision making. Mayor Riordan continued with another example of his “Just get it done” approach in support of his axiom. RIORDAN: The Northridge disaster was a formidable challenge to Los Angeles and my administration. I was in the emergency operations center with Bob Yates, head of the Transportation Department for the city. We were going over reports and eyewitness accounts of severely damaged roads, closed intersections and so forth. The Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) had collapsed around La Cienega. The most traveled spot in Los Angeles at that time. Bob Yates explained to me that we would have to find and contact the right officials in Culver City and with the State of California (Caltrans) and get their input on a plan of action, and then take that to the City Councils of LA and Culver City. Under normal conditions that could take up to a year, in the present emergency maybe a month at least but probably longer. To me none of this was acceptible. At that point I remembered the solution to the Tow Away Zone signs in the garment district. I told Yates. Right now call the Watch Commander at the Los Angeles Police and in five minutes, I want our officers to take control of those three intersections and immediately get signage in place to outline the best detour from the Westside to downtown LA around the closed freeway. I wrote down my home number and gave it to him. If anybody questions you; give them my home number and tell them to call me. No one ever called. This too was another example of how it is better to act and ask forgiveness later. McDonough: To sum this up, what would you say your legacy was, how do you want us to remember your time as mayor? RIORDAN: You need to put the City and the Mayor’s job in perspective. LA is a very large city, 50 miles from South to North and over forty departments. No single person can oversee that. So, I hired the best and brightest people that I could find, and I trusted them and empowered them to make things happen. I did not care if they were Republicans or Democrats, gay or strait, nothing except that I thought they could do their job well. Every day, there were problems. I had a staff of about 120 and they would joke that if you see the Mayor in the corridor, watch out! He is looking for somebody to fix a problem. We set the best priorities that we could and tackled everything as fast as we could. To this day Richard Riordan is revered by the vast majority of the residents of Los Angeles as a great mayor. Riordan has left a very positive legacy to our city thanks to his public service, his work at UCLA and the Riordan Foundation.

Proud to be Irish in New Orleans Let Louisiana Share the Luck of the Irish By Barbara Singer Irishman Pat Riley once said, “Look at your choices, pick the best one then go with it.” So, I was ready to Go NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana). No doubt about it, New Orleans is one of the most distinctive and historic cities in the United States and it’s the quickest way to indulge yourself in culture, quality food and unique lifestyle enhanced by music. Just a few days before my anticipated visit to New Orleans, I stopped by Shreveport-Bossier for a North America Travel Journalists Association Conference in session at the Shreveport Hilton adjacent to the Convention Center. It was a time to reflect on “The Other Louisiana,” enjoy crawfish and more celebrate and catch a glimpse of Las Vegas-type casinos in Bossier City. It’s worth a visit, especially to Gators & Friends, an engaging theme park with up close Louisiana alligators and exotic animals-no petting. It was instant joy to arrive in “The Big Easy” aka New Orleans. Here, you’ll find friendly folks, gumbo & beignets and plenty of Irish pubs. I headed directly for the French Quarter, the oldest area in the city, which has a colorful history of international influence including Irish. Its stunning architecture and dominant ironwork is unforgettable. Most of the party action takes place on Bourbon Street; I opted for a quieter site, the charming MAISON DUPUY, an elegant boutique hotel with an alluring courtyard. It’s in proximity to NOLA business and pleasure and directly across from Fahy’s Irish Pub, a friendly pub frequented by the locals for good beer, pool tables and fine music. Jazz is the craze; you can hear it on every street early am to late pm. If you can’t get enough of it, head over to Preservation Hall for jam sessions and jazz greats. Curious about the city since Hurricane Katrina? NOLA has been revamped and rebuilt and has emerged better than ever. Life in The Quarter centers around the most famous landmark Jackson Square, named for Andrew Jackson, hero of the Battle of New Orleans and it’s here you will be pleased to visit the historical St. Louis Cathedral, stroll through beautiful gardens, encounter artists, fortunetellers and musicians and cue up for coffee and beignets (French fried fritters) at the famed Café Du Monde. So much to do and see; experience great restaurants, shopping in boutiques and antique stores on Royal Street and explore the French Market. The Irish Channel in NOLA is where many Irish settled in the early 19th Century with the largest immigration in the 1930’s; gang activity was quite prevalent for a time; even the great price fighter John L. Sullivan trained in the Irish Channel area. However, as far back as the 1700’s many Irish arrived in New Orleans. Just one visit to the Irish Cultural Museum on Conti Street in The Quarter reveals the Irish connection. Here you can even review history and stories of Irish soldiers, priests, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and more. In 1769 Alexander O’ Reilly became the second Governor of Louisiana. Trace Irish heritage through maps, writings and photos and clippings; told and untold stories. By the way the first St. Paddy’s Day parade was held in New Orleans in 1809 and presently continues with pride. Streetcars have been a longtime favorite way to traverse the city of New Orleans, you can see them all on Canal Street. The green streetcars are vintage, the 1923Perley H. Thomas cars are New

Orleans icons and can be noted on the St. Charles line; however, everyone loves the latest slick red streetcars that outnumber the green, as they travel to parks, museums and mid-city rumbling along the tracks fully packed with visitors. While in NOLA, if you missed Mardi Gras, you can still see the glorious floats and awesome characters, housed in one venue with artists that created the magic and pizzazz. We lingered at the Basin Street Cemetery with its mysticism and circled the National World War II Museum, both worth a visit. Dining is wondeful, we recommend Tujague’s Restaurant on Decateur Street, it’s the 2nd oldest restaurant in New Orleans and continues to serve great Cajun/Creole food with great style, taste and portions. Also, the Irish House Restaurant, award-winning chef Matt Murphy is a Dublin native, who has worked and studies in kitchens worldwide. He offers his Irish Gastropub-an Irish public house that specializes in high quality food. You know those Irish favorites Shepherd’s Pie, Shaved Corn Beef, Bangers & Mash, Beer Battered Fish & Chips and so many more delectibles. The Irish Brenner family has cultivated the restaurants of New Orleans with so many favorites that you could dine at a different one every night of the week and more. We dined at delicious Café Adelaide and Dickey Brenner’s Palace Café; of course, the most elegant is the renowned Commander’s Palace. The U.S. Irish Ambassador launched the Irish Network New Orleans in 2011, IN-NOLA, is an organization made up of over 500 members, who are Irish, Irish Americans and friends of Ireland. Today it’s a diverse membership that values the multiple aspects of Irish identity in today’s society. Without a doubt New Orleans is unparallel for music, food, entertainment and fun. “Music, melody and rhythm find their way into secret places of the soul, radiating joy,” so says Father Flannigan, I wonder if he was referencing NOLA. Just one visit and you’re hooked and can’t wait to return for the best of times. Callahans Restaurant in Santa Monica To Close We learned with dismay recently that one of the best family style restaurants left in the Los Angeles area was planning on closing down at the end of December. The food and friendly staff at Callahans were always top notch and both will be greatly missed by loyal customers and neighbors. Callahans started up in 1946 by an Irish immigrant Wallace Callahan who ended up having a small chain of three restaurants. In 1988, the current owner Abe Vasquez took over and Callahans continued to flourish and serve great quality breakfasts and entrees at a reasonable price up to the present time. Above: The Family Business Trio‑Abe and his daughter Liz Callahans and Abe Vasquez have been an important and son Mike. The Vasquez family is appreciated, loved and fixture in Santa Monica since St. Patrick’s Day of 1988. respected by all who know them. The day is memorable to Vasquez because that is the Right: We recently had he pleasure of sitting down for cof‑ day he took over as the owner of Callahans. It remained fee (always fresh and strong) with Abe Vasquez, the soon to a bustling family business for 26 years. Now the long be retired Chef and owner of Callahans on Wilshire in Santa Monica. cherished business is closing on December 31 of this year. It is happening because of rising rents in part, but also because of a family loss. Sadly, another lynchpin of Callahans and the Vasquez’ middle daughter, Leticia, or Lettie as she was well know to most, passed away suddenly in April of this year. There was an overflow of people at her Requiem Mass at Saint Monica’s in Santa Monica, a testament to the love and kindness that she shared with family and friends for her entire life.

The loss was hard on her Father. She was his right hand and the plan was for her to take over the management of the restaurant when Abe retired. Most would agree that the death of a child is one of the hardest crosses to bear.

Come early for that to secure a seat and, if you are not in it, you will be sure to catch the heartthumping band and clan contingencies as they march by so close, you could touch them! ALL activities come to a halt the grounds over for this event and then resume to their full capacity at the conclusion. continued page 16

Friday Evening at Seaside Before buckling down to the serious Scottish Games business on the Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, we offer a time of relaxation, fun, food and fellowship. Come to the Four Points by Sheraton in Ventura Harbor on Friday, October 10 to have a wee dram with us at the Single Malt Whisky Tasting. Five o’clock the pouring begins and doesn’t stop until the evening’s next event, the “A Scottish Evening” affair at 6:30 just across the hall in the Sheraton’s big ballroom. Starting off with a wonderful buffet supper, you will dine with friends old and new and be entertained by some of the weekend’s top performers and treated to the beauty and style of a Scottish Fashion Show!

It isn’t just all kilts

and sox anymore! See haute couture fashions and many items available from Games’ vendors on the weekend! See you there for all the fun!

A few highlights…

family fun

First, is that one of our wonderful Vendors inquired about the possibility of creating a Tea Room on the grounds and serving tea (and coffee too) along with their products. What are their products? WELSH CAKES of course! Joe and Denise Carbone aka The Welsh Baker have the idea that by providing a hot beverage and a place to sit plus some of their very yummy baked goods (much more than the amazing Welsh Cakes), our Games guests will enjoy the surroundings more and take a break from the non-stop action outdoors. The Welsh Bakery Tearoom will be inside beside their Vendor stall and directly across from the Celtic Spring Stage! So you will have a little music with your tea! Try it, I’m sure you will love it! Now, from the sublime to the...well, a delightfully fun competition. How about a HAGGIS EATING CONTEST?? Yes, we have decided that this is something Seaside needs in the worst (wurst?) way!! Charles Lamb, maker of fine haggis (the Original “Oatmeal Savage”) has consented to sponsor a Seaside Highland Games Haggis Eating Contest!! He has done this for years and it is about time we at Seaside got on the bandwagon (or the Offal Truck).... So, if you are the determined man or lady you think you are and....have a stomach of iron, come on out and give it a try!! There are PRIZES to be won and there are rules--of course there are rules--that will be explained to you at contest time. In the Seaside Food Court at times to be announced. You will never forget the experience! Oh, one more thing: Our friend Tooti Bevill has just contacted us to say that she will be bringing her highland cattle back to Seaside again this year!! This is exciting news for all you youngsters and a few older city slickers who have never seen cows up close and personal. But these are not just any cows--they are, in the vernacular, “HEELAND COOS”, the shaggy horned beasts found in abundance in the braes and beside the Heeland lochs in Scotland. Tooti generously shares her lovely beasts with all who happen by and even marches with them in Saturday’s Grand Parade! You don’t want to miss this!!

Seaside Games continued Don’t miss the athletic competitions while you are at that end of the Fairgrounds where the Highland Heavies, the 805 Heavies, the Big Boys, will show how it’s done both at home and abroad! Hammers, weights, sheafs and cabers—ALL get tossed by men and women athletes alike! A show like no other you won’t want to miss! Clan Row encompasses so much—be sure and check the Scottish Fiddle

competitions, see and experience the Clan Currie Harp Glen and “Petting Zoo” (don’t worry, they won’t bite) and, on Sunday, be sure and check out the Drum Major Competition on the green. Ray Pearson’s Single Malt Scotch Seminars are available to you, as are the plentiful Celtic food and quality merchandise vendors in the Shopping Halls and spilling out onto the grounds. Dance of all sorts—Highland at the first stage as you enter the grounds and Scottish Country Dance in McBride Hall along with a variety of surprise performers, too! The Children’s Glen across the way is a place where the wee ones will want to spend some time. Well worth it, folks, as these fine volunteers bring all sorts of activities right down to your child’s needs and abilities.

GEORGE CARROLL to attend the International Police Association (IPA) Ireland’s FRIENDSHIP WEEK, April 12th thru April 19th, 2015. IPA Ireland will celebrate their 60th Anniversary in April and they are pulling all stops to make the celebration an unparalleled experience for visiting law enforcement professionals.

In Memorium...Evan McGrath

The stage is silent and empty now but the music will return…

With heavy hearts we share the following information: A great friend and member of the LA area’s far flung Irish-American Community died suddenly at his home on August 17. Evan and his wife Terri were the founding members of the great Irish Bands, Irish Eyes and Wrath of McGrath.

Evan also taught Religious Studies at the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Evan had been dealing with some health issues (including heart) and they got the best of him. This is a tremendous loss for Evan’s family, his school community and most certainly for the Irish American and LA’s Music Community. There was a private family service for Evan McGrath in August. A public Eucharistic Service in celebration of his life and possibly an Irish Wake will be announced later. …his family will carry on the musical tradition.

Holiday Entertainment at its Finest… The sensational Irish Music Ensemble Celtic Woman is returning to North America this Fall-Winter and will celebrate the holidays at Segerstrom Center for the Arts with Home for Christmas – The Symphony Tour on Monday, December 15 in Costa Mesa. The concert will offer an unparalleled musical experience, with the group and full symphony orchestra performing music from its second Christmas album Home for Christmas and the brand new live concert DVD Home for Christmas: Live from Dublin. Celtic Woman promises an enchanting and festive evening filled with mesmerizing music, performance and holiday cheer. Fans can expect to hear vibrant live renditions of such favorites as “Silent Night,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and “Joy to the World.” Representing the essence of a Celtic female performer, Home for Christmas – The Symphony Tour features the celestial vocals of Lisa Lambe, Susan McFadden and Mairéad Carlin, along with Celtic violinist Máiréad Nesbitt. The ensemble has evolved in the years since the group’s inception, but the signature sound of Celtic Woman has remained consistent, under the direction of Emmy-nominated music producer David Downes, former music director for Irish stage show Riverdance. It was a decade ago that Celtic Woman first traveled from Ireland to America to introduce millions of new fans to the group’s fresh fusion of Irish musical tradition, contemporary songcraft and state-of-the-art stage production. The group made its debut on television in 2005 with a concert performance which was filmed in Dublin and broadcast in the United States on PBS. Although initially intended as a one-time-only event, the concert was so warmly received by the public that the group continued to perform and record. Since then, Celtic Woman’s uplifting music has touched the hearts of a devoted audience that has embraced the group’s massively popular public television specials, CDs and DVDs. Since 2005, Celtic Woman has sold more than eight million copies of its nine CDs and eight DVDs, making it the only allfemale act to achieve multiplatinum success in the classical crossover and world music charts! Tickets to Celtic Woman: Home for Christmas – The Symphony Tour start at $49 and are now available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling 714 556-2787.
