The Downside of Things

Sometimes its not all fun and games

Its not all about airtime

when it comes to riding. Being in

at Woburn. What goes

England we all know what the weather

up, must come down

can get like and most of the time its wet. So riding time has to be stopped for a bit of love and care to the jumps.

THE ONE MAN BAND

GNARL Magazine is a one off production combining both a passion for editorial design and photography into a beautiful love child that you can cherish (or not?). If you have recieved this than I really like you/your company, or I would really love to work with you. Or more than likely, both. My name is James Webber and I am the one man band behind GNARL. I am a 3rd year Graphic Design student currently completing my BA(Hons) at the Cambridge School of Art where I am gaining an everlasting “love for layout, type and editorial design. The aim behind GNARL Magazine is to not only show to you my skills as a graphic designer and photographer but to give back something to the industry and show the kind of influences you are having on the next generation of designers. I myself am an avid extreme sports fan and can often be found at Woburn Sands bike area riding on two wheels down a hill. So I thought what better subject for the one and only issue of GNARL than mountain biking! All stories and photographs in this magazine are my own and I take great pride in presenting them to you.

What do you like to see when watching someone riding? We like to see flow, a big trick bag and all round gnarl. And this guys got it all! Matt Jones is a Woburn local who’s been riding there for a very long time, and we’ve seen him continue to get better and better.

This one’s worth keeping your eye on!

Young Blood: Matt Jones What do you like to see when watching someone riding? We like to see flow, a big trick bag and all round gnarl. And this guys got it all! Matt Jones is a young (18 years old to be precise) shredder that you should most definately be on the look out for. With riding experience of 7 years and backing from the likes of Identiti bikes, Halo rims, Gusset, ODI and TSG, this guy knows how to go big! Introduce yourself, let the people know who you are! I’m local to Woburn Trails and have been riding and digging there for a few years now, I compete nationally as a dirt

jump rider but also race downhill for fun! I’ve been shooting you on your bike for quite a few years now but when did you first get in to riding and why? I first took to mountain biking at the age of 11 when I’d already tried out BMXing and entered a few races, when hearing about there being a local mountain biking spot to ride, my mum took me there at weekends until I was old enough to ride there myself. And to this day I’ve never found anything as fun! You’ve got your brother Jono to ride along side and have grown up riding with, is there much sibling rivalry between you or does that not really occur as you are both in different disciplines of biking? Since they day we first rode a bike, we’ve been so competitive with one another but i feel that this rivalry has a big part to play in our development as we have pushed each other to improve continuously over the years. You tend ride and compete with the older guys.Does it ever get intimidating riding against the ‘big boys’? For sure, I always feel that I should be riding at the level that they are, and forget sometimes that it may require more time to develop the experience that they have over me. Everyone who rides and understands the sport is super friendly so it’s only the riding level that is ‘intimidating’ rather than the riders themselves.

Along with riding with your brother, what has the support been like from your parents? Up until a couple of years ago when sponsors came onboard with a great deal of support, my parents have no doubt been the key to me being able to ride whenever I can, they’ve sacrificed so many weekends to me pursuing the sport and I can’t thank them enough for that! You were recently off competing in Germany with some of the Identiti crew, are there anymore overseas trips in the pipeline for you? The season has come to a close now so international competitions wont commence again until next year, I do however have a trip planned to Barcelona in November to ride in a show and to ride at some of the bike parks that are known across the globe! Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Will you still be flying high on two wheels? My dream is to ride for a living but maintain the joy that I get out of the sport. So I guess if I’m still riding in 5 years then I’m half way to that goal! As mentioned before you compete a lot with the older riders. What, if any, is the best advice that they have passed down to you and that you might pass on to others? Don’t take it too seriously, everyone’s time will come at some point if they want it to, so don’t peak to early and keep riding!

"...it 's only the riding level that is 'intimidating' rather than the riders themselves."

GET

TO

KNOW:

PHIL AUCK LAND

Hello Phil! Thanks for giving us some time. Rather than me doing it, why not tell everyone a little about yourself? Well what more can I say than that little bio! I mostly ride trails and stakepark, and travel as much as possible. I’m far more into shooting photos and video rather than hitting up a competition. I’m currently a postgraduate student at Warwick University, and of late that seems to be taking over my life hah. Besides riding another passion of mine is drum and bass. We’ll start with the usual stuff, so what first got you into riding? It started with the usual just building small kickers in the woods with my primary school friends then everything progressed from there, our trails began with an ironing

board and a stump!

Age: 22 Hometown: Coventry Your steed: Identiti p60X Sponsors: Identiti Bikes, Halo, Gusset, Society Forks

What was the first trick you learnt and how long did it take to master? It will have to the one hander, and it took an afternoon at Hornton Hill to get sorted!

Years Riding: 12 When you’re not on your bike, what are you usually found doing? That’s an easy one, I’ll be doing university work. If not, I’ll be at a drum and bass gig with my mates! We’ve spoken about young Shredder Matt Jones a bit earlier on; can you think of any other riders we should keep our eye on for the future? Another one will be little Dylan who rides for Identiti at the moment, he can session the trails like he has experience far beyond his years.

27

GNARL Got any dirty gossip on any of your fellow riders? Matt Jones is actually gay... What has been your biggest achievement, and biggest flop in your time biking? Hah the achievement list is pretty short. I wouldn’t say I have a biggest one, but I suppose I’m pretty proud of some of the skatepark gaps I’ve gotten done over the years, oh, and spinning the massive pit jump that was in Brendens three minute gaps section. My biggest flop has got to be slipping a pedal at Woburn and managing to put myself out for 3 months. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given, and what would you pass on to someone else?

Get to Know: Phil Auckland

The amount of good advice is too numerous to list! Growing up going to all the competitions and getting to know the older riders really gave me a good perspective on the scene, showing it for what it for what it really is, a bunch of mates having a good time. It’s something that they taught me never to forget, showing me that riding is not all about competition, but road trips and unique experiences that are all made possible by my bike. The advice I’d pass onto someone else it not to take it all too seriously and ride how you like. If you ride your own way and stay committed you’ll be recognised for it, there’s no need to learn all the ‘in’ tricks just because that’s what comps like. Have as much fun as you can, and grab every opportunity to travel.

Time to Hang The Helmet?

GNARL

“No more could have been asked from all the people that helped. The community stayed strong and fought hard!

36

GNARL

TIME TO HANG THE HELMET? In June of 2010 it was announced that all the hard work and effort that had gone into building the jumps of Woburn Sands day after day, was destined for an end. It was announced that the trails were to be flattened due to the lack of provision of funds for the new 20 year lease. Woburn Sands has a very large history on its back with a continuously large growing biking community that it’s taking along for the ride. Some of the best riders in the world have ridden and can still continue to come and ride there. It’s seen different groups come and go over the years. A few years back the jumps took a bit of a downhill turn and were not fully taken care of, but with the help of a few dedicated locals, they were built back up to become one of the best spots in the UK, appearing in various magazines and videos. This threat of closure was not to much of a shock to the locals as it had been announced a number of times before but never gone through with. But this time it was serious! This sticky situation brought the whole biking community together and they fought hard to keep the jumps alive. The story was posted on websites, blogs and social networking sites. The responses and support that were received came in the hundreds. Testimonials were written by people who had ridden or still rode at Woburn explaining how much of a loss this would be to their community. These were then to be put forward to the local council and the Duke of Bedford. Thankfully the council took notice of all the support and the Woburn Trails have been secured for a further 20 years under a renewed lease.
