My name is James Webber and I am the one man band behind GNARL. I am a 3rd year Graphic Design student currently completing my BA(Hons) at the Cambridge School of Art where I am gaining an everlasting â&#x20AC;&#x153;loveâ&#x20AC;? for layout, type and editorial design. The aim behind GNARL Magazine is to not only show to you my skills as a graphic designer and photographer but to give back something to the industry and show the kind of influences you are having on the next generation of designers. I myself am an avid extreme sports fan and can often be found at Woburn Sands bike area riding on two wheels down a hill. So I thought what better subject for the one and only issue of GNARL than mountain biking! All stories and photographs in this magazine are my own and I take great pride in presenting them to you.

In June of 2010 it was announced that all the hard work and effort that had gone into building the jumps of Woburn Sands day after day, was destined for an end. It was announced that the trails were to be flattened due to the lack of provision of funds for the new 20 year lease. Woburn Sands has a very large history on its back with a

continuously large growing biking community that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taking along for the ride. Some of the best riders in the world have ridden and can still continue to come and ride there. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seen different groups come and go over the years. A few years back the jumps took a bit of a downhill turn and were not fully taken care of, but with the help of a few dedicated locals, they were built back up to become one of the best spots in the UK, appearing in various magazines and videos. This threat of closure was not to much of a shock to the locals as it had been announced a number of times before but never gone through with. But this time it was serious! This sticky situation brought the whole biking community together and they fought hard to keep the jumps alive. The story was posted on websites, blogs and social networking sites. The responses and support that were received came in the hundreds. Testimonials were written by people who had ridden or still rode at Woburn explaining how much of a loss this would be to their community. These were then to be put forward to the local council and the Duke of Bedford. Thankfully the council took notice of all the support and the Woburn Trails have been secured for a further 20 years under a renewed lease.
