CURRICULUM VITAE

I am James Harrington, a Part I Architecture Graduate. My design work has covered a range of sectors, scales and disciplines, often demanding a considered integration of mixed-uses, sustainable systems and technological features. My experience and research within Architecture has been focused around alternative approaches to public and community spaces, the use of temporary architecture, and its contribution to urban areas. The sensibilities of these areas of work have given me a broad perspective of how spaces can be created and the latent potential of existing spaces. I studied at the University of Sheffield gaining a 2.1. Outside of my studies, I have worked at Ash Sakula Architects.

SELECTED PROJECTS CANNING TOWN CARAVANSERAI Newham, London, UK Ash Sakula Architects Design + Build Intern

The Canning Town Caravanserai was a winning proposal for Meanwhile London Competition hosted by The London Development Agency and Newham borough Council. The commission was for temporary projects which would make inventive and engaging uses of underdeveloped sites around Newham, coinciding with The London 2012 Olympics and beyond. The Caravanserai takes its name from the communal spaces along ancient silk routes, where people congregate to share stories, trade goods and socialise. The nature of the project has demanded a space that develops in phases, using the upcycled materials available to adapt the space to meet changing demands and opportunities. I joined the team during the design and construction of the Flitched Yard - a covered workshop and events space. This workshop was an ambitious structure made almost intirely from donated materials from the London 2012 Olympics site. My responsibilities included the design of its facades, the production of exhibition boards for Open House London 2013, moving the project onto ‘off-grid’ energy, installation of a photo-voltaic energy system, installing services and organising/hosting events and workshops.

PRESENTING TEMPORARY SPACES: A visual study of Temporary Architecture in Greater London 2007 - 2014 BA(Hons) Architecture Dissertation Project ABSTRACT: Temporary Architecture is transient and indeterminate, it falls within a grey area between the conventional discipline of architecture and the loose, informal creation of space. To enforce a permanent, determinate perspective of temporary spaces, is to contradict its very character, and ignore its inherent affinity to change and the passing of time. Rather than defining

Temporary Architecture, this study looks to open-endedly present projects in Greater London between 2007 and 2014, through a catalogue of images. The aim is to raise the possibilities, challenges, and questions, which are often open and unanswered, encouraging thought and debate around a discipline of space-making which can often be ambiguous, intriguing and divisive. The study compiles visual material which is accompanied by words, statements and quotes which expand, frame and probe a deeper analysis for the viewer. The first section introduces Temporary Architecture in

London, juxtaposing it against the established, permanent fabric of the city, its ongoing, and changing relationship with society, its culture and its politics. Temporary projects are then mapped upon the physical landscape of the city in the second section, probing their associations with specific areas and with other projects. The later three sections will then present the characteristics and possibilities of temporary architecture, the critical forces making them happen, and the legacy that they leave behind. This loosely mirrors the story of a project, showing motive, process and accomplishment. 5

THE STORYTELLING CENTRE Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, UK BA(Hons) Architecture Design Project The Art of Storytelling finds a natural home in Hebden Bridge; The local area has been home to many literary greats such as The Bronte Sisters, Ted Hughes, and Sylvia Plath. The Shaggy Dog Storytellers of Hebden Bridge required a dedicated space to share their art with others - through performance, workshops, exhibitions and a library of traditional folk stories. Inspired by tales of escapism, the centre creates a haven within the carcass of an old textile workshop, which then directs its focus towards its natural surroundings. From within the preserved shell of the existing building, the spaces retreat up the steep valley side and into the tree canopy.

MakeSpace is a digital design and manufacturing centre which serves a growing, international community of makers who create and innovate through open-source collaboration. The centre houses a variety of hightech machinery, workshops and event spaces, providing users with facilities, expertise, education and support to realise their ideas and share them with others. MakeSpace will be a key component in the development of Manchester’s creative district the Northern Quarter giving local start-up enterprise access to the centre’s services allowing them to compete with larger business, helping to preserve and develop the area’s creative character. A bespoke digitally fabricated screen envelopes the building, opening up at ground level revealing windows into exhibition and work spaces, as well as a new public space. The proposal compliments the wider regeneration plan for the Northern Quarter, responding to key routes between existing landmarks and the pedestrianisation of nearby Stevenson Square.
