A

rrowtown is a living historic town which was built on gold and is full of goldmining history.

Gold was first discovered in 1862. Once the miners found it too hard to extract, they left the town and the Chinese were encouraged to live and mine the gold. The town is located on the banks of the Arrow River where, as you stroll along, you can see the Chinese Miners Village which was their home till the 1920s.

Arrowtown’s main street Buckingham Street is steeped in rich historical buildings along with retail, cafés and restaurants. Explore Arrowtown’s rich history at Lakes District Museum where you can find a directory of the historical buildings bathed in Arrowtown’s special history.

Arrowtown Goldrush

– Then and Now

G

old was first discovered in a river now called the Arrow by Jack Tawa in August 1862. The river was originally called Haihainui – big scratches – by Maori who used to visit this area during summer for seasonal hunting (of birds) and gathering (of pounamu – greenstone). In early October huge finds were made by the more experienced miner William Fox and his party. In two weeks they had found over forty pounds weight of gold, just over 18kg, worth over a million dollars at today’s value. The Arrow was said to be the richest gold bearing river for its size in the world.

Today it is still a source of alluvial gold; anyone with a bit of time, a gold pan and a shovel can find small flakes of gold in the river directly behind the town. Gold panning is a popular summertime activity enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, and can be the perfect low cost family entertainment. Gold pans can be hired from various locations around town, including the Lakes District Museum, where staff are happy to assist with information on where and how to pan.
