Alexandra

A

lexandra has a golden history dating back to the 1860s when gold was discovered. It was extensively mined until the 1930s. The town was originally known as Lower Dunstan, then Manuherikia and then the Junction. It was renamed Alexandra in 1863 after Princess Alexandra by John Aitken Connell who surveyed the town.

Orchards were planted to serve the mining community, but it was around the turn of the century that orchardists realised the potential of the dry climate and fertile soil combined with the irrigation available from the mining races. As a result, orchards expanded rapidly and are now a staple of the town's economy. Whilst the gold that founded

the town is long gone, Alexandra is thriving with new gold — viticulture and wine-making. If you love history, Alexandra is teeming with relics from its past, including mining dredges, a water wheel located outside the town's museum and many historic buildings, railway bridges and walks.

fabulous gold strike in 1862 started the Dunstan Gold Rush and within a year up to 40,000 miners were digging along the banks of the Clutha River, then known as the Molyneux. By the end of the first year, the field had yielded close to 2,000 kilograms of gold. The town could once claim to be the most populous in New Zealand during

the height of gold fever. The construction of the Clyde Dam during the 1970’s and 1980’s had a major impact on the town. Many new people came to live in the area and with the flooding of the Cromwell Gorge, the area lost some of its beautiful orchards. However the newly created Lake Dunstan is now a major recreational asset.

Cromwell

C

romwell is one of Central Otago's best kept secrets — a visitor attraction that has something for the whole family. When the Clyde Dam was completed in 1990, Cromwell's main street disappeared under Lake Dunstan. Some of the historic buildings dating back

to the gold rush of the 1860s were saved or lovingly rebuilt on higher ground, creating the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. Step back in time to the gold rush days and explore the heritage buildings, many with artisan businesses in them, located on the shores of beautiful Lake Dunstan.

taying in Central Otago means adventure and outdoors experiences, all year round whether it’s the “Summer in Central” experiences of fishing, rabbit hunting and swimming or the autumn and winter delights of roaming the hills and cycle trails with crisp frosts underfoot and clear blue skies above. Central Otago Sports Depot has been part of Alexandra for over sixty years and we have the equipment, knowledge and enthusiasm to help you make the most of your stay here. Fishing rods to buy or hire, snorkel and mask sets for splashing in the river and lake, air rifles (and bigger guns) for rascally rabbits, tennis racquets to buy or hire, badminton sets and cricket bats…and we can fix stuff too! In 2016 our independent family owned store doubled in size and we now offer one of the most comprehensive ranges of fishing,

In addition to our range of carefully selected sports equipment we also have a range of hire gear available for you. Fishing gear to hire from $10/24hours for a rod & reel set (plus the cost of any lost lures!) Tennis Racquets – two racquets for $10 for up to 8 hours (includes 4xballs).

The National Transport & Toy Museum

T

his fascinating museum is one of the largest private collections in the world with four major buildings housing over 600 vehicles, 16 aircraft and 60,000 plus toys and miscellaneous items. The Museum is the result of one man’s dream — Gerald Rhodes who started collecting in the 1950s as an apprentice for International Harvester in Christchurch; it’s a 20th century treasure-trove. For a private collection the variety is amazing. The transport collection alone includes vintage and classic cars, fire engines, military vehicles, tractors, trucks, motorbikes, heavy construction equipment, buses, boats plus much more.

Aircraft include a Russian Mig 21, Antonov AN-2 Colt, an American Lockheed Lodestar and an English Hunter Jet Provost T5a, an English Electric Canberra and a Fokker Friendship. The toys are a child’s dream. There are 1,000’s of die-cast models, Meccano, dolls, teddy bears, tin, windup, clockwork and battery powered toys plus much, much more. Also on display is over 500 Barbie Dolls and accessories. The Star Wars collection must be seen to be believed. Thousands of miscellaneous items around every corner, including typewriters, hurricane lamps, sewing

machines, musical instruments and kitchen utensils — all bringing back memories of the past. Check out their website for a full list of exhibits. It is not just a “look at” museum as you can take a ride on the adult-size pedal cars around the grounds, clamber over various guns such as WWII Bofors gun and a Chinese Anti-aircraft gun, and climb over a 50 ton Centurion Tank. This extraordinary collection leaves people amazed that one man has collected so much in one lifetime. The place is a real nostalgia trip, a must-see for all the family. Leave plenty of time, there is indoor seating and outdoor picnic area you are welcome to use as well as a children’s playground. 13

I

f you have some time in Wanaka this is definitely one to add to your list‌ explore the amazing Mount Aspiring by helicopter! The spectacular Mount Aspiring summit (3033m), also known as Glistening Peak or in te reo Maori as Tititea towers 30km from the gorgeous resort town of Wanaka.

There is no better way to appreciate the breathtaking landscapes of the Mount Aspiring National Park and surrounds than from above. Olivers of Clyde was founded as a general store back in 1863, supplying the hordes of gold seeking prospectors with the essentials required to survive in the gold rush heyday. Fast forward to today and while Olivers has undergone a complete redevelopment, it still follows in the time-worn tradition of offering refreshment to locals and weary travellers alike, and is now home to the Victoria Store Brewery.

highlights.

The history filled township of Clyde is rapidly becoming a destination as tourists seek out opportunities away from the rush of Queenstown. Just as in the goldrush times, Clyde has hidden treasures that are sure to delight travellers. Clyde’s most significant treasures is being the acknowledged gateway to two of New Zealand’s great rides: the Otago Central Rail Trail (New Zealand’s original great ride) and more recently the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold trails. There is also the exciting option of an informal loop ride that joins Clyde with the larger neighbouring township of Alexandra via what the locals call the ‘river track’ beside the mighty Mata Au (Clutha) River and back to Clyde via the Rail Trail. For a leisurely day exploring local vineyards and microbreweries on a

bicycle consider the DeVineCycle provided by shebikeshebikes, one of the local bike hire providers. Set off along the river track on the true right of the mighty Mata Au and follow the trail as it ducks and dives towards Alexandra. You’ll pass by various remnants of the Clyde dam construction and protected tailings from the gold rush. At various points along the trail you can peel off to visit renowned and unique local vineyards like Three Miners, Black Ridge, Como Villa Estate and Legacy before pausing for a break in Alexandra. You’ll find many great cafes and restaurants in Alexandra. If you want to continue with the historical theme then call into the Courthouse Café, which is not to be missed if you have a sweet tooth! If you are looking for something savoury then

consider a local’s favourite, by sampling a microbrew and a pizza from Ferris Rd Brewery. Your return leg takes you onto the famous Otago Central Rail Trail and another opportunity to wine taste at Dunstan Rd Vineyard before continuing through to Clyde to return your bikes. Celebrate your journey at The Victoria Store Brewery with a microbrew and a bite to eat – doesn’t this sound DeVine? Looking for some more adventure? shebikeshebikes offer a full range of day trips that incorporate the other worldly Roxburgh Gorge trail and the famous Poolburn Gorge on the Otago Central Rail Trail. All easily accessible from Queenstown, Wanaka and Cromwell and they have day trips to suit everyone from the very young to those with more life and world experience.
