Murchison Rural charm, natural beauty and once in a lifetime experiences are everything you can expect from your stay in Murchison, without the hassle of numerous chain stores, fast food franchises or tourist bus queues.
weekend or week and fill your days with outdoor activities. Or perhaps you’d prefer to indulge your golfing hobby at the Murchison Golf Course and test your fly fishing skills on our beautiful waterways?
Murchison is the true definition of an undiscovered outdoor paradise.
Murchison dubs itself the ‘white-water capital’ of the country, because there are rivers everywhere – the Gowan, Mangles, Matiri, Glenroy, Matakitaki, Maruia and the mighty Buller. For anybody into canoeing, kayaking, or rafting it’s a dream come true. . And for the mountainbiking enthusiasts there is an excellent 85km long trail called the “Old Ghost Road”, which goes all the way from Lyell to the West Coast, reviving a long-forgotten gold miners’ road. Originally a gold rush town, Murchison was almost completely destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1929 – you can find out all about it at our district museum.
With an unassuming and unpretentious face this small town is home to some truly unique and stunning activities, eateries, and outdoor adventures. Murchison’s township is an ode to its goldmining past with many buildings still in their original form from the late 1800’s and early 1900s. In contrast to this charming old world feel is the ability to zipline across the Buller River, walk the longest swing bridge in the southern hemisphere, blast the rivers by jetboat or hike to some of the most amazing vantage points and experience the rare beauty of the ‘Natural Flames’. Families can enjoy a leisurely day rafting the rivers or taking the kids gold panning at the Swingbridge. With pristine rivers and one of the most beautiful swimming holes you’ll ever find, you can spend a day,
More than that, Murchison is the perfect destination for a wedding, conference or team building weekend. With Conference and event facilities, marquee hire, catering options and event planning available, you can wow your guests with this truly rural New Zealand experience.

Murchison Day Walks Scenic walks Kahikatea Walk, 20 min An easy loop track abutting the Murchison camping ground at the eastern end of the town. The reserve features many fine specimens of kahikatea and matai trees. Many forest-dwelling birds can be observed and heard, including bellbirds, tui. kereru, robins, fantails, silvereyes and kingfishers.
Skyline Walk, 1 hR 30 min return This 3 km well-formed track is located one km west of Murchison, at the junction of State Highway 6 and Matakitaki West Bank Road. The main rivers that can be seen from here are the Matakitaki which flows from Nelson Lakes National Park to join the Buller River west of Murchison; the Matiri which can be seen flowing from the mountains of Kahurangi National Park in the north. The biggest river seen is the Buller which eventually flows into a gorge — perhaps the most scenic gorge in New Zealand. The road to Westport follows the Buller River to the sea.
Johnson Creek Track, 2 hr return Access to this track is up the
Matakitaki West Bank Road, located one kilometre west of Murchison. In 1929 the Murchison earthquake created a large slip which is the feature piece of this walk, there are excellent views of the mud stone cliffs. Robins, tui, tomtits, grey warblers and bellbirds are commonly heard and seen, with kaka, kakariki, shining cuckoo and long-tailed cuckoo heard at times.
Maruia Falls Track, 10 min return Alert: Do not climb over the barrier above the falls — it is for your safety. Lives have been lost. Accessed from State Highway 65, 23 kilometres south of Murchison, the Maruia Falls track starts from the car park and descends to the Maruia River bank. From here there is an excellent viewpoint of the falls, which were created following the 1929 earthquake. Return to the car park the way you came.
of Murchison. There is a separate publication for this walk.
Historical walks Six Mile Walk, 1hR 30 min return This walkway is situated ten kilometres south of Murchison on the Matakitaki Road. It starts and finishes at the old Six Mile hydro power station by the Six Mile Creek Bridge. Below the weir in the narrow granite gorge are waterfalls and rapids that produce spectacularly turbulent water.
Lake Matiri Track
Kawatiri Historic Railway Walk, 20 min return
This full day walk takes you on a tramping track to tranquil Lake Matiri, in Kahurangi National Park. Access is via the Matiri Valley Road approximately six kilometres north
Located at Kawatiri Junction at the intersection of State Highway 6 and 63, some 35 kilometres northeast of Murchison, this easy walk follows a short section of the line of the
former railway track that ran from Nelson towards Murchison. The walk commences from a car park with information panels detailing the rich history of the area. After some 200 metres the track crosses an old rail bridge before passing through an eerie train tunnel built in 1923. The track returns via beech forest above the Hope River closing the loop at the entrance to the tunnel. A torch is recommended for the tunnel but not essential.
Lyell, 1 hR 30 min This three-kilometre walkway leads you past the remaining features of the once booming township of Lyell — the cemetery, stamping battery and gold mining sites. There are information panels on site and a campground nearby. There is a separate and more detailed brochure available for this walk.

Buller Gorge to reefton Heading east from Westport on State Highway 6 takes you through the Buller Gorge, a wild and insanely picturesque river valley formed by the mighty Buller River. You’ll be mesmerised by the stunning scenery of this bush clad and twisty road. The Buller Gorge Marathon is an annual event. It is known as New Zealand’s most scenic Marathon. A fun packed weekend in Westport – the town comes alive to host competitors from all over the world. A challenging course which is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking through the dramatic Buller Gorge. A top scenic drive! This massive river is born out of Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park and carves out a 169 kilometre path through uplifted mountain blocks, gorges and dense forest, to the sea where it forms the port for Westport. The Buller Gorge Swingbridge is only 1 hour and 13 minutes away from Westport and is well worth a stop (NZ’s longest Swingbridge) A place where visitors can feel the rush of the Cometline ride, experience the thrill of the Jetboat, walk the heights of New Zealand’s longest swingbridge, pan for abundant gold treasure, or simply relax and view some of New Zealand’s best native flora and fauna on one of the many nature walks. From here you can continue onto Murchison – a charming farming town and a mecca for river rafters and keen trout anglers.
THE OLD GHOST ROAD Mountainbikers and trampers in search of the ultimate back-country adventure need look no further than The Old Ghost Road. Quickly becoming known as a ‘bucket-list’ attraction, New Zealand’s longest single-track resurrects an old gold miners’ route between the ghost town of Lyell in the Buller Gorge and Seddonville on the West Coast. While not for the faint-of-heart or inexperienced, if you match your capability and prepare appropriately, The Old Ghost Road will reward the fit and experienced adventurer with a premier multi-day backcountry experience. To broaden the audience and to make the trail more accessible to a range of appetites, a set of new exciting packages – Old Ghost Adventures – has been created. Visit the official website for more details.

The modern town of Westport emerged when the first goldminers came to the area from 1861. By the end of the 19th century it was a well developed port on the Buller River and an important service centre with coal and goldmining, farming and sawmilling. Westport today relies on mining, fishing, farming and tourism. The main shopping area, stretched out along Palmerston Street, is just a short distance from the Buller River, the harbour, fishing port and beaches. Diverse visitor amenities include supermarkets, cafes, bars and pubs, camping grounds, a recreation centre, swimming pool, movie theatre and churches.
- the heart of the spectacular northern West Coast Westport and surrounds has a population of about 4500. It is the perfect base to explore Buller with its diverse visitor attractions north, south and east. Westport is the main administrative centre for the Buller district, which stretches north to Karamea and south to Punakaiki. The district also encompasses the Buller River inland to Inangahua Junction and towards Murchison, the Paparoa National Park and ranges, the Inangahua and Maruia valleys and the Lewis Pass area. Buller and the northern West Coast is rich in pre-European history with well documented early Maori settlement sites in the Kawatiri (Buller), the Heaphy and towards Punakaiki, some dating back to the earliest Polynesian migrations to these shores.
FUR SEALS -
at tauranga bay
One of New Zealand’s most accessible seal colonies can be found just out of Westport on the edge of Tauranga Bay. The 10 -minute track from the car park is suitable for wheelchairs and leads to viewing platforms directly overlooking the colony. Although this is a year-round colony, the best time to view is October to March when the BIG BULL SEALS return to mate and the pups are at their most playful. The full track on to Cape Foulwind takes one-and-a-half hours (three hours return) and is well graded as it crosses rocky granite bluffs, grassy downs, swampy streams and sandy beaches. Be sure to take good windproof clothing if it’s windy. The walk offers panoramic views of the cape and rugged coastline including rock stacks and steeples. A side track leads to Cape Foulwind lighthouse. If you’ve got some surfing enthusiasts in your group, some of the best surfing on the Coast is right here, at the café end of Tauranga Bay. Tauranga Bay car park has picnic tables, great toilet facilities, and a beautiful beach to play on. It has story boards about the wildlife, history and environment. Watch out for Weka birds (native flightless Bush Hens). They are curious, always up for stealing your lunch, and not afraid of people. If you don’t watch out, they’ll grab your muffin!
Hotspots WESTPORT Coal Town Museum Check out the Westport i-SITE in Palmerston Street adjacent to the 1940 Art Deco Clocktower Chambers, which documents the rich industrial heritage of the town and district. It offers a great insight into what life was like in Westport, and other towns such as Denniston,Stockton and Millerton in the late nineteenth century through to the mid twentieth century. For a great day out why not take a look at Coaltown Museum then head on up to Denniston and let your imagination run wild on what life would have been like for the hardy souls who made a living out of such challenging living conditions 2000 feet above sea level. Glass interpretation panels at Denniston help to deliver a perception of what once was.
NBS Theatre The NBS Theatre screens 7 days a week with Hollywood blockbusters, 3D movie, arthouse films and heaps more
Pulse Energy Centre The Pulse Energy Centre provides modern indoor heated swimming pools, indoor sport areas and a gym on the north-eastern side of town.

The Oparara Arch
The Denniston Plateau offers walks, history and spectacular views.
Karamea hinges on the spectacular limestone arches and underground cave system at Oparara and the Heaphy Track, one of the ‘Great Walks’ in New Zealand.
Denniston and the nearby ghost towns of Coalbrookdale and Burnetts Face, in their heyday housed over 2500 people, with coalmining the only employment and residents virtually cut off from the outside world. The twisting road 7km to the top in itself offers spectacular coastal views. ‘Must sees’ include the old Coalbrookdale rope road, which is a pleasant 30-minute walk and the famous Denniston Incline. Once described as the ‘eighth wonder of the world.
Granity Head north to the seaside settlement of Granity with its spectacular coastal setting. . The Torea Gallery offers local art, and Granity also boasts a museum and nursery operated by community volunteers.
Ngakawau At Ngakawau and Hector the rare Hector’s dolphins can sometimes be seen from the beach.
The spectacular Honeycomb Caves and natural arches at Oparara are a must-see. The caves are only accessible via organised tours, with several options available. Visitors can also walk into the Oparara Valley on the tracks provided to view the remarkable limestone arches.
Buller Gorge The road through the Buller Gorge takes the traveller over 70km inland towards Murchison. Features along the way include Hawks Crag — where the narrow road squeezes through hewn rock — river views and picnic spots, spectacular scenery and fishing opportunities. The Buller Gorge is also home to the longest swingbridge (At 110m long, the Swingbridge is an experience in itself. Take beautiful photos of the mighty Buller River.)

Karamea has a relaxed ‘off the beaten track’ feel. The area is a natural wonderland, with the beginning or end of the famous Heaphy, Wangapeka & Karamea-Leslie Tracks and the Oparara Basin with the Honeycomb Hill Caves & Limestone Arches in the Kahurangi National Park. Karamea is a secluded haven, situated between the mountains and the sea, on the river flats of the Karamea River and the coastal plains. Snuggled into the warm northwest corner of the South Island, it caters for the tramper and caver, birdwatcher and botanist, geologist and mountainbiker, hunter and fisherman, the more adventurous kayaker and rafter… or simply those seeking a family holiday ‘away from it all.’
Karamea is the gateway to the Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, and also the Wangapeka and Karamea-Leslie Tracks for the more adventurous. The scenery here is simply spectacular, from the lush rainforest bristling with tall nikau palms to the largest limestone arches in the Southern Hemisphere. You could be tempted to raft an exhilarating Grade 4/5 wild river or check out a heritage cave littered with the fossilised remains of extinct birds.
