Hidden Gems Spend the afternoon at Tahunanui Beach From a childhood spent crafting sandcastles on the shore and splashing around in the shallows, to an adulthood spent strolling along the waters edge as the sun sets, the white sands and glistening waters of Tahunanui Beach are home to many memories, and form the basis of many family traditions. All year round, at this iconic beach situated just minutes from Nelson City, you’ll see paddleboarders circling Fifeshire Rock, groups of friends tossing a ball around on the sand, and happy children queuing up outside the Mr Whippy truck. Top tip: Allow a whole day when visiting Tahunanui - the Fun Park located just behind the beach has everything you need to keep you entertained for hours on end, with go karts, a trampoline park, roller skating, a hydroslide, bumper boats, mini golf, a model train, and even a zoo! 4
Journey the length of Farewell Spit
Visit Te Waikoropupu Springs
At a whopping 34km long, one of the largest natural sandspits in the world has formed at the top of the South Island, the result of continuous coastal erosion and oceanic drift from the West. The Spit forms the ‘birds eye view’ of Golden Bay into the shape of New Zealand’s very own national bird - the kiwi - and it is home to over 90 wetland and migratory bird species of its own.. how’s that for irony? As a dedicated wetland of international importance, Farewell Spit is what we like to call paradise for nature lovers, and is home to gannets, godwits, knots and waders, as well as playful seal pups and cheeky oystercatchers. A trip to the Spit with Farewell Spit Tours just wouldn’t be complete without a leisurely climb to the crest of the undulating sand dunes, before a speedy descent to the base, racing against the wind-wrought ripples that lay before you.
Just a short distance from the Takaka township, you’ll find the extraordinary Te Waikoropupu Springs. Holding the title as the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, and the largest coldwater springs in the Southern Hemisphere, this wahi tapu (sacred place) is considered a taonga (treasure) by local Maori, and is held in high cultural and spiritual regard. Although you cannot swim in the springs, or even so much as glide your finger across the surface, it is easy to appreciate its allure when it contains some of the clearest water ever measured. A vibrant community of eels and native fish can be seen darting around underneath the bubbling surface, and the senses are awakened with the sweet sound of birdsong emerging from the depths of the manuka and kanuka forest.
Climb the lighthouse at the Boulder Bank For 10,000 years, debris from the Mackay Bluffs was swept southwards, rolling over the seabed and forming a natural (and very rare) spit of boulders, stretching 13km long. Tucking Nelson City away behind a long finger of rough gravel and smooth boulders, the Boulder Bank Scenic Reserve helped indigenous Maori to shelter the harbour from early European Settlers, until their eventual discovery of the land in 1841. An 8km walk along the rock-strewn bank will give you a glimpse into its unique history, and a climb up the iconic lighthouse will treat you to stunning 360 degree views of Nelson City, the Western Ranges, and Tasman Bay.

Hot Spots Walk to the Centre of New Zealand Starting from the City Centre, an easy walk along the softly flowing Maitai River will take you across a blue-railed bridge to the base of the Botanical Reserve. A twenty-minute uphill trek under the canopy of poplar and kauri trees will land you at the Centre of New Zealand viewing platform, adorned with a large white pin that identifies the central trig point from the 1870’s. After capturing that perfect Instagram shot, take a breath of fresh air and enjoy the stunning views over the buzzing central city, Tasman Bay and the picturesque mountain ranges. As you part with this iconic landmark and start your descent back down the hill, why not select one of the alternate routes? The
Branford Park trail will take you to a popular swimming hole known by locals as ‘Black Hole’, whilst continuing along the hillside will extend your scenic journey right through to Walters Bluff. Or, head back to the base and explore one of the magical gardens located close by; Queens, Miyazu or Japanese.
Get a dose of adrenaline in Cable Bay You’re guaranteed to have an extraordinary day out in Cable Bay, with stunning scenery and exhilaration galore! Test the limits of your comfort zone at Cable Bay Adventure Park, a thrill-seekers paradise with the vision to become the best adventure park in the world. Here you can traverse undulating muddy terrain and navigate sharp corners by quad bike,
explore open farmland and native forest on horseback, battle it out with friends in paintball warfare, ride the rivers on board the amphibious Argo, whizz through the sky on the world’s longest flying fox or simply stay near the café and feed the tame eels. And if that doesn’t burn all your energy, a trek to the lookout on Sentinel Hill offers panoramic views over picturesque Cable Bay, which has a unique history as New Zealand’s first cable link to Australia in 1876 and as the fishing ground for Maori as far back as 1150AD.
Dine alfresco in stunning settings Known as the sunshine capital of New Zealand, we really do mean it when we say you can enjoy the outdoors at all times of the year. The waterfront along Rocks Road is home to a number of restaurants that
are quite literally located on the water’s edge, so you can dine on the balcony whilst savouring the uninterrupted views of the mountainous ranges that lie behind Haulashore Island and Tasman Bay. Meanwhile, in the central city, Trafalgar and Hardy streets are thriving with cafes and restaurants, offering an authentic alfresco dining experience. Revel in the variety of local fare and international cuisine, and if you just so happen to miss out on the annual Feast of the Senses, why not create your own moveable feasts extravaganza, moving between central city restaurants to make the most of the diverse offerings? Top tip: On a Wednesday, Kirby Lane is a popular hangout for those that work in the CBD, with quirky food carts and farmers market stalls serving up local fare in a relaxed alfresco setting. 5

magine, for a moment, that you’re flying in a plane over one of the most scenic regions of New Zealand. The turquoise waters and golden sands of Abel Tasman National Park below, the rugged ranges of Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes national parks surround you. Look out one window and you can see the West Coast, look out the other and there’s the Pacific Ocean. At 16,500 feet, the door of the plane opens. Don’t worry, it’s meant to open. You’re strapped to a tandem skydive jumpmaster. Together, you slowly edge towards the exit. “It’s OK, I’ve got you,” the jumpmaster says. One moment you’re sitting on the edge, your feet 10

About Nelson Tasman
W
here else are you surrounded by three National Parks within 90 minutes of the city? The Abel Tasman Coastal Walk may pull in the majority of visitors, but the Kahurangi National Park offers world-class trails through pristine ancient forests. It also includes Mt Owen, with rockscapes that are so fantastic they were featured in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. Where else can you can ride from your door to a bike trail on a geologically significant mountain; or kayak in a marine reserve straight after work in the CBD. Living an extraordinary life is an everyday experience in Nelson Tasman. 24
The Nelson Lakes National Park, contains Lake Rotomairewhenua, officially named ‘the clearest lake in the world’. If that doesn’t pique your interest, how about the chance to ice skate in the ponds near St Arnaud or ski at the Rainbow ski field or explore Farewell Spit, one of the largest natural sandspits in the world. Or take very little time out of your day to get to the historically significant Cable Bay to walk the hills or kayak, boat and snorkel in the Horoirangi Marine Reserve, or ride straight out your front door to the Dun Mountain Bike Trail. Everyone knows that Nelson Tasman is sunny, with consistently high sunshine hours all year around - about 30% more than the national average. But it’s the crisp, clear
days of autumn that locals love, where there is snow on the mountains yet the sea is still warm enough for a dip , with the Boulder Bank sheltering the fishers, sailors and waterfront visitors. Tasman and Golden Bays are two of just three northern-facing bays in the country, and their rolling hinterland provides the perfect conditions for growing grapes, apples, berries and hops. Craft beer, cider or wine anyone? The bays, and the nearby Marlborough Sounds, attract fishermen and divers from all over the world and help make Nelson Tasman a global centre of excellence for seafood and fishing. Access to this protected wilderness hasn’t happened by accident. It’s the result of pioneering conservationists like Perrine
Moncrief, a founder of Forest & Bird, Craig Potton, who helped create the Horoirangi Marine Reserve, and the thousands of committed volunteers who are restoring and nurturing our wilderness areas back to their original splendour. Awaroa Beach in Abel Tasman attracted global attention when 400,000 Kiwis crowd-funded its purchase for the country in 2016. It’s true that other regions offer spectacular scenery but the land and sea combine in Nelson Tasman in a way that Lord Robert Winston called ‘dramatically beautiful, an idyll, a little oasis.’ We couldn’t agree more. Even on the most ordinary day, we live amongst the extraordinary.

amed by William Songer, the personal servant of Captain Arthur Wakefield, Stoke is one of the outersuburbs of Nelson. It lies between Richmond and Tahunanui and was voted ‘Keep New Zealand Beautiful People’s Choice Best Place in New Zealand’ in 2010.
Isel House, set in a picturesque Englishstyle park, is a wonderful heritage house, named after a village in Cumbria, England.
Take a step back in time to see how people lived 150 years ago by visiting one of Nelson’s iconic heritage buildings.
Broadgreen has a significant textile and period costume collection, including a quilt made in Ireland in 1776.
The property was built in 1848 by Thomas Marsden, a watchmaker, who died in 1876 after being thrown from his carriage when his horse bolted.
Broadgreen is a charming cottage beautifully furnished and restored to show family life in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
Another treasure is a child’s chair made from teak salvaged from the wrecked sailing ship the Fifeshire.
