The demi-god Tu-te-raki-whanoa is said to have carved out the fiords with his adze Te Hamo. No other explanation can seem to fit.
Few Maori were permanent residents of the region, but seasonal food-gathering camps were linked by well-worn trails. Takiwai, a translucent greenstone or New Zealand jade, was sought from Anita Bay and elsewhere near the mouth of Milford Sound. Captain Cook and his crew were the first Europeans to visit Fiordland, and in 1773 spent five weeks in Dusky Sound. Cook's maps and descriptions soon attracted sealers and whalers who formed the first European settlements of New Zealand. From the middle of the 19th century, surveyors, explorers and prospectors began to penetrate the unexplored interior of Fiordland.

Earland Falls
Hidden Falls Walk
Mirror Lakes
From The Divide car park follow the Routeburn Track to Howden Hut (1 hr 30 min). From here take the track to Mackenzie Hut – the falls are halfway between Howden and Mackenzie huts. Clearings give excellent views of the Hollyford Valley. Earland Falls are 174 metres high and originate from Lake Roberts. Please check track conditions at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre during the snow/avalanche season (winter and spring). These walks are in avalanche risk areas.
From the Hollyford Road end, cross the swing bridge over Humboldt Creek onto the Hollyford Track. The track follows the Hollyford River/Whakatipu Ka Tuka and offers occasional views of the Darran Mountains. At Hidden Falls Creek the track passes Sunshine Hut, run by Hollyford Valley Guided Walks, and continues upstream to the swing bridge. Take the rough track to the right of the bridge to view Hidden Falls. Hidden Falls Hut (12 bunks) is a further 20 minutes along the track over the bridge.
A good place to stretch your legs during the drive to Milford Sound. Small lakes on the roadside provide outstanding reflective views of the Earl Mountains. Waterfowl and wetland plants can be seen against a backdrop of beech forest. Interpretation panels provide information on local wildlife. Boardwalk is wheelchair accessible.

Manapouri he Manapouri township is a 20 minute drive from Te Anau, and is your starting point to Doubtful Sound.
T Tina McGregor Photography
There is plenty to do with boat trips, many walks for all levels of fitness and kayaking. Getting out on the water to discover the 20 islands, along with coves and beaches, is a great way to make the most of your visit.
There is so much to explore, you can do it in a day trip or stay awhile, accommodation and restaurants are on hand to satisfy your needs. Manapouri is the place to get away from it all and get back to enjoying nature.
Waiau River Manapouri he Waiau River is the largest river in the Southland region of New Zealand. The Upper Waiau River that flows between Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau doubled as the fictional River Anduin at the end of the first film of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, for the scenes where the Uruk-hai chase the Fellowship along the river banks.

Milford Sound ilford Sound, named the eighth wonder of the world by Rudyard Kipling, became more accessible to the public by way of road access after the opening of the Homer Tunnel in 1953.
M
It was originally overlooked by Europeans as they believed its narrow entranceway did not lead to such large interior bays. Captain Cook bypassed it for this very reason.
Milford Sound has plenty of water wildlife including seals, dolphins, penguins and whales. Majestic in all types of weather, temporary waterfalls appear once the rain starts. Two permanent waterfalls to be admired are Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls.
Doubtful Sound oubtful Sound was named ‘Doubtful Harbour’ by Captain Cook as he was uncertain whether he could navigate it under sail. It was later called Doubtful Sound by whalers, when in fact it is a fiord not a sound. Doubtful Sound is the longest and also the deepest of the South Island fiords.
D
Doubtful Sound can only be accessed by a boat cruise on Lake Manapouri and a bus trip over the Wilmot Pass or by sea or air.
The water is a mixture of two with freshwater sitting on the top 2-10 metres and underneath this is saline water from the sea. Bottlenose Dolphins inhabit Doubtful Sound with a sub-group of about 70 which reside permanently within the sound. Other sea life are fur seals, penguins and whales. With granite mountains and unspoilt wilderness you will feel like you are experiencing a new world.

Cruise Te Anau
e Anau, and the amazing native rainforest that surrounds it, has a pull that keeps us coming back. My wife Kara and I got married close to The Hidden Lakes and near the shores of Lake Te Anau. Our Skipper for the journey to and from our ceremony site, Peter Kirker of Cruise Te Anau, was fantastic in helping make it a special day.
T
“There are waterfalls cascading down the sides of the fiord...” Seven years later and we’re back for a refresher and who else would we choose than Peter and his Discovery Cruise aboard the vessel Carousel. The boat departs the dock on Lake Te Anau and you cruise along the lake heading toward the South Fiord. The views in the fiord are amazing and the camera gets a workout pretty early on. There are waterfalls cascading down the sides of the fiord and Peter knows where to put the boat for those great photo shots. The Hidden Lakes is a great easy short walk and allows you to get off the boat and for a relaxed walk in the middle of a spectacular rainforest of beech trees
20

and other native plants and wildlife. Peter uses his local knowledge to point out some of the features, including on our last trip, a tiny mushroom only 5mm across and 10mm tall and bright red in colour. Back aboard the boat we enjoy a cup of tea or coffee before slowly cruising the edges of the fiord getting close up views of the immense walls climbing far above us, covered in all sorts of mosses and other plant life. Remote beaches dot the shores and look quite inviting for a summer picnic. As we slowly head back along the lake toward Te Anau there is plenty of time for more shots of all the scenery
that surrounds us. Peter is full of local knowledge and has provided excellent commentary along the way. That’s one of the things I love about the Discovery Cruise — the interaction with the skipper makes this a more personal trip. After three hours we cruise into the dock back in Te Anau. We’ve got a load of photos to go over tonight. That’s the thing to remember — bring a camera and be prepared to use it.
