LEADING THE WAY IN RIVER CRUISING
CRUISING THROUGH FRANCE & PORTUGAL 2013
Dear Traveler, One of the most gratifying things about being President of AmaWaterways is having an opportunity to create wonderful memories for our guests. Our custom-designed ships, deluxe amenities, and meticulously planned itineraries provide exceptional vacations no other cruise line can match. In 2013 we will be adding a new destination to our product line. The Paris & Normandy itinerary is a seven-night Seine River cruise followed by two nights in the “City of Lights.” This is one of the most scenic and memorable routes we offer, an opportunity to savor both the delights of the bucolic Norman countryside as well as France’s most glamorous and cosmopolitan city. AmaWaterways is once again offering cruises through Portugal’s fabled Douro River Valley, the birthplace of
Port wine and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This rugged, otherworldly place is wild and untamed, with a terraced terrain sculpted by centuries of winemakers. We have two itineraries to choose from, “Enticing Douro” and “Port Wine & Flamenco.” Can’t decide? Combine both rivers! Our new Seine/Douro itinerary, “Impressions of France & Portugal,” is truly something special, a two-week, two-river exploration of France and northern Portugal. Despite their close proximity, these countries are worlds apart in many respects, which make for a dramatic contrast over the course of a single journey. A very wise person once noted, “The journey is the destination.” We could not agree more. Few journeys are as civilized, as effortless, or as enjoyable as being aboard an AmaWaterways river cruise, especially in this rich, rewarding and often overlooked corner of Western Europe. We hope to welcome you aboard soon!

ENRICHING Shore EXCURSIONS There is no better introduction to European culture and heritage than our Small Group Shore Excursions, which provide in-depth tours with top-notch local guides. Visit the village of Giverny, where Monet lived for 43 years; take part in an unforgettable excursion to the Normandy beaches; visit one of Portugal’s famed wine estates or explore the 14th-century Alpendurada Monastery. These are but a few examples of the complimentary excursions included in your cruise. We also offer three activity levels for our guests, designed specifically for leisurely walkers, faster paced walkers, and “late starters” (for those who prefer to sleep in). With one of our handy audio headsets, you can wander at your own pace and never miss a word your guide says.
CULINARY DELIGHTS - BITES & SIGHTS Our exclusive food-themed guided tours provide a delectable taste of Europe. These complimentary shore excursions are limited to 20 guests to ensure an up-close, hands-on experience. Learn about regional specialties at a French cooking school or visit various specialty shops to sample Normandy’s famous cider, calvados, and artisanal cheeses. Enjoy a Port wine tasting, snack on Portugal’s delicious salt cod cakes, or explore open-air markets brimming with fresh produce, chocolates and savory pastries. Whether you are a gourmand or an aspiring “foodie,” our culinary tours will treat you to a truly authentic European experience.
COMPLIMENTARY BICYCLES Bicycle riding is enormously popular in Europe and many of its rivers are lined with scenic paths ideal for pedaling. AmaWATERWAYS is the only river cruise line that brings along bicycles and safety helmets for our guests’ enjoyment. Venturing out on your own two-wheeled adventure or on a guided tour is a fun and novel way to experience France from a completely different perspective. (Only available on board the AmaLegro).

DISCOVERING NORthwest FRANCE Your AmaWaterways cruise starts in Paris, where the Seine and its romantic bridges and charming walkways have inspired artists, writers, and musicians for centuries. The Seine follows a meandering westward course through Normandy’s verdant countryside, past apple orchards and the ruins of monasteries and châteaux, it is considered to be one of the most memorable routes in all of France. The region gets its name from the Viking Norsemen who sailed up the Seine in the 9th century; memories of another invasion, the D-Day Landings of 1944, still linger here. En route to the coast, explore Monet’s enchanting gardens in Giverny, a colorful tapestry of flowers. Wander the cobbled streets of the historic city of Rouen, as famous for its French Gothic cathedral as for its tragic connection to Joan of Arc, who was burned at the stake here in 1431. Tour the Calvados region to sample its celebrated apple brandy, or explore the picturesque port of Honfleur, an unspoiled medieval town that has attracted artists since the 19th century. The gentle pace of your river cruise offers countless opportunities to savor France’s rustic beauty.
Monet - Giverny Claude Monet was a key founder of French impressionist painting, renowned for his richly colored and light-filled landscapes. In 1883, Monet moved to a house in Giverny where he cultivated a spectacular garden and water ponds and painted for much of the rest of his life. His house and gardens remain a perennially popular tourist attraction, even more than a century after his death.

Normandy & WWII During the Second World War, continental Normandy was part of the German occupied zone of France. The Allied Forces mounted a full-scale invasion of Normandy, the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944, which launched the Battle of Normandy and ended with the liberation of Paris. The rest of Normandy was not liberated until May 9, 1945, near the end of the war.
DISCOVERING THE DOURO VALLEY The wild, untamed upper reaches of the Douro River Valley – the birthplace of Port wine and a designated World Heritage Site – has a harsh, otherworldly terrain sculpted by centuries of tenacious winegrowers. Your journey begins at the mouth of the Douro River in Porto. From there, the river turns inland through craggy, twisting canyons, past laboriously terraced vineyards, villages untouched by time, and the crumbling ruins of monasteries. Unique languages, legends and rural customs continue to thrive here, and many locals still believe in the evil eye, witches, and golden-haired spirits living at the bottom of wells. Throughout this ruggedly beautiful region, you will have ample opportunities to try Portugal’s excellent table wines, as well as Vinho Verde, a light and sparkling “green wine” named for its youthful, fruity freshness. Sample the hearty regional cuisine, such as Portugal’s renowned caldo verde soup, decadent almond sponge cake, and sheep’s milk cheese on thick slices of dark, dense bread. If this is your first time to the dramatic Douro River Valley, prepare to be amazed!
Manueline ArcHitecture Manueline is a particularly rich and lavish style of architecture indigenous to Portugal in the early 16th century. This innovative style synthesizes aspects of Late Gothic architecture with influences of Spanish Plateresque style, Italian urban architecture, and Flemish elements with maritime themes and representations of the discoveries brought to Portugal from the voyages of Portuguese navigators.
Fátima Fátima is known as the place where apparitions of the Virgin Mary appeared to three Portuguese children in 1917. A basilica built on the site, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, is now a pilgrimage site that attracts about four million Catholics every year. As many as a million of these pilgrims visit the shrine on either May 13th or October 13th, significant dates of the apparitions.

The once-massive stronghold of Richard the Lionheart was completed in 1198, and consisted of three different enclosures divided by dry moats. Captured by the French in 1204, it changed hands a number of times during the Hundred Years War, coming permanently under French control in the 15th century.
