pioneers of RIVER CRUISing AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 by Rudi Schreiner, Kristin Karst and Jimmy Murphy, each of whom brought decades of experience, knowledge and dedication to the venture. A native of Vienna, Rudi is a river cruising pioneer, having introduced the modern-day river cruise concept to the travel industry back in the mid-1990s. Kristin hails from Germany and contributed extensive sales and customer service experience, both in Europe and in North America. Irishman Jimmy Murphy is the founder of tour operator Brendan Vacations. Together, their expertise and hands-on way of doing business created the most distinctive river cruise line in the industry. Our founders and staff share a passion for travel and seek to give other travelers genuinely lifeenhancing experiences. In an effort to take river cruising to a whole new level, we have focused on providing distinctive ship designs, the highest quality onboard amenities and services, and interesting, well-crafted itineraries. AmaWaterways is now an award-winning river cruise line on Europe’s most iconic rivers and has expanded to exciting new destinations around the world. We are building new ships, we are still family-owned and operated, and we continue to lead the way in river cruising.
AmaVoyages AmaWaterways strives to create extraordinary river cruise experiences around the globe. In response to growing demand for more remote and undiscovered destinations, we developed our AmaVoyages division for river cruises in Portugal, Vietnam/Cambodia, Russia and Africa. While these ships and onboard amenities and services differ somewhat from our European fleet, AmaVoyages consistently delivers the highest standards available in these regions. Our newly-built or redesigned AmaVoyages ships are staffed by impeccably-trained crews and our meticulously planned and expertly guided land programs are considered the best in the industry. We put a strong emphasis on fostering genuine in-depth cultural encounters such as visits to local markets, demonstrations by local craftsmen, music and dance performances, and regionally-inspired cuisine. AmaVoyages journeys are an ideal choice for travelers seeking memorable, one-of-a-kind travel experiences.
Spectacular natural beauty, authentic cultural encounters, and front-row seats to the greatest wildlife show on earth‌these are the elements of the quintessential African safari.

The Chobe A verdant lifeline through the game-rich ‘Four Corners’ region of southern Africa.
africa’s “gentle giants” are frequent visitors to the life-sustaining chobe river
3 |
THE CHOBE RIVER This scenic and important waterway, only 50 miles from Victoria Falls, forms the northern boundary of Chobe National Park. It passes through the game-rich ‘Four Corners’ region where Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe all meet, home to nearly 500 species of birds and the largest concentration of elephants in Africa. Legendary explorer David Livingstone visited here in the 1850s, as have countless safari-goers ever since. Today, the river is a rich haven for wildlife, particularly during the dry season from May through October, when the water farther inland is scarce. There is much to see along the reed-lined banks of the Chobe – lions, jackals, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, crocodiles, monkeys, baboons, kudu and impalas. And surely few travel experiences can compare to personally witnessing a herd of elephants drinking and bathing at the water’s edge…or the turbulent froth that arises as hundreds of buffalo plunge across the river….or the sight of a hippo, its massive jaws stretching wide in a contented yawn. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Puku Antelope – the Chobe River is the only part of Botswana where this extremely rare animal can be seen.
VICtoria falls Justifiably recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is truly one of the world’s most wondrous and breathtaking sights, a marvel of Mother Nature that truly must be seen in person to fully appreciate. This massive cataract creates a mighty roar as it plummets 338 feet into the gorge below, kicking up a heavy mist visible from 40 miles away. The sound is so tremendous that the African name for the falls is Mosi-oa-Tunya – literally, “the smoke that thunders.” British explorer David Livingstone, the first European to set eyes on the falls in 1855, was so awe-struck by the spectacular sight that he named them in honor of his queen. The falls are a mile wide, spanning the entire breadth of the Zambezi River. In Livingstone’s words, “on sights as beautiful as this, angels in their flight must have gazed.”
Adventure seekers will find a treasure trove of natural wonders along Africa’s scenic rivers.

The Ship
Drift along the Chobe River aboard this serene ‘floating lodge,’ an ideal vantage point for observing wildlife.
the elegant & eco-friendly zambezi queen
5 |
ZAMBEZI QUEEN The bright and airy 28-passenger Zambezi Queen was specifically designed for African river safaris on Botswana’s Chobe River. From the ship you are likely to observe elephants, hippos and crocodiles, as well as flocks of birds and other wildlife gathering along the shoreline to drink. Aboard the Zambezi Queen, enjoy modern accommodations, delicious cuisine and an excellent vantage point for observing the surrounding wildlife. The ship’s top deck features an enclosed air-conditioned dining room, lounge and bar, plus an open-air pool deck for relaxing, taking a refreshing dip, or 360-degree game watching. And there’s nothing like falling asleep to the sounds of Africa, as cool evening breezes drift through the open doors of your private balcony. Unlike a typical river cruise that travels from one port to the next, the Zambezi Queen was designed for an entirely different purpose – to facilitate optimal game viewing. As this sophisticated “floating lodge” leisurely drifts along a short stretch of the river, animals perceive no threat and come to the water to drink and bathe. This affords an amazingly up-close view, almost near enough to touch. You will also have opportunities to explore the wonders of Chobe National Park, home to lions, giraffes and an incredible spectrum of other animals. Daily excursions in open-air vehicles or in smaller boats allow for breathtakingly close views of animals in their natural habitat. Other unique highlights of this once-in-a lifetime itinerary include a visit to the Kasenu village for a friendly encounter with the local community, a typical Boma dinner with music and dancers in native costumes, fishing and bird-watching expeditions, an exclusive picnic in Chobe National Park, and an excursion in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe.
THE PERFECT VANTAGE FOR BIRDWATCHERS
african fish eagle
The Chobe River is a key source of water for the region, attracting wildlife from many miles away. Home to nearly 500 species of birds, the area provides superb bird-watching and spectacular aquatic scenery. By day, observe birds from the vantage of your ship or in small expedition boats. At night, fall asleep to the distinctive sounds of Chobe’s incredible winged wildlife.
Miles removed from modern-day civilization, the Zambezi Queen provides an oasis of comfort and convenience.

Zambezi Queen The Zambezi Queen is an environmentally responsible “eco-ship.” Instead of a conventional propeller system, it uses a water jet propulsion system that causes no damage to the river bed. Only the latest fuel-efficient and low-emission generators are used during daylight hours; at night, the ship operates on battery power. Hot water is provided by a solar heating system, energy-saving lights are installed throughout the vessel, and sinks and showers have water-saving features. Also of note – the onboard water purification plant, which filters river water five times, rendering it clean, clear, and perfectly suitable for showers and tap water (the plunge pool, too). All cleaning products used on board are biodegradable and pose no harm to wildlife.

» 7-night East African safari (Nairobi, Kenya; Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro & Serengeti, Tanzania)
CHOOSING A SAFARI There are many factors to consider when selecting the safari that’s best for you. Two of the most important are where to go and when. We offer four tantalizing land programs in Southern Africa and East Africa with departures throughout the year. The winter dry season from May to October is usually considered the most optimal, when vegetation is sparse and animals gather at water sources. But every season has its own unique charms, making Africa an enticing destination almost any time of year. South Africa South Africa is renowned for its natural beauty, wildlife, good weather, and diverse range of experiences, from safaris to wine estates to scenic coastal drives to chic urban nightlife. It also boasts some of the largest tracts of untamed wilderness on the entire continent. For safari-goers eager to spot the “Big Five,” the main draw is Kruger, South Africa’s famous national park, and the private game reserves that surround it (as well as concessions located within the park itself). Peak season is the dry winter months from April to September, although game-viewing in South Africa is generally favorable year-round. Botswana & Namibia Botswana is home to the renowned Chobe National Park, where the elephant population is estimated to be the greatest in the world. All four of our African itineraries include a 4-night river safari along the Botswana/Namibia border aboard the Zambezi Queen. You will also have additional opportunities to view wildlife from small motorized expedition boats and four-wheel-drive vehicles. The best game-viewing periods in the Chobe River region are during the winter dry season, May through October. Tanzania Serengeti National Park in Tanzania boasts one of the most diverse populations of wild animals anywhere on Earth. The best game-viewing may be in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, “Africa’s Eden,” and the Serengeti, where you can observe herds of zebra, wildebeest, gazelle and Africa’s greatest concentration of lion. Our East Africa itinerary also visits Lake Manyara National Park, best known for its famous tree-climbing lions. The surrounding area shelters hippo, impala, elephant, giraffe and baboon. Most of our East Africa departures fall during peak season months, June through November, which offer optimal weather and coincide with the annual Great Migration, when nearly two million large animals can be seen on the move.
Game drives with experienced rangers and trackers provide many opportunities for thrilling up-close views of animals.

Aut hent ic Experiences Unspoiled, unhurried, up-close…experience Africa as it was meant to be seen. Throughout your 4-night wildlife cruise aboard the Zambezi Queen, you will venture out on small safari boats that take you heart-stoppingly close to animals as they approach the river to drink. It’s an entirely different experience from a land-based safari, a truly magical way to encounter some of the African continent’s most iconic wildlife.
BOULDERS BEACH PENGUINS
SAFARI BY BOAT
Your Cape Town itinerary includes a stop at the delightfully unexpected Arctic Penguin sanctuary at Boulders Beach, located on the dramatically scenic Cape Point Peninsula.
For an even closer look at the abundant wildlife along the Chobe River, take an excursion in a small safari boat that delivers you right to the water’s edge.

No matter which of our four safari programs you choose, your journey will include a number of adventures that are on every intrepid traveler’s “bucket list” for Africa. Select highlights include South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, game drives in Botswana’s Chobe National Park, close-up views of the wildlife-rich waterways along the Chobe River, and two full days to explore the absolutely sublime Victoria Falls.
CHOBE PARK GAMES DRIVES Enjoy exhilarating game drives in Chobe National Park, renowned for its biodiversity and for having the world’s densest population of African elephants.
TOUR OF VICTORIA FALLS Your cruise concludes at Victoria Falls, one of the world’s natural wonders, a massive cataract that makes a thunderous roar and kicks up a spray visible from miles away.
Each of our four land safari programs are distinctively different, with unique itineraries and special highlights designed to cater to specific individual tastes. Our meticulously-planned safaris range from 12 to 18 days, some leisurely paced, others more active and covering more ground. Whatever sights and activities might be on your wish list for Africa, rest assured we have a safari that can accommodate them.
There are many ways to “do” an African safari, each with its own one-of-a-kind features and unforgettable moments. Not sure which itinerary to choose? Our safari specialists are happy to assist as you make your decision. Whatever land safari itinerary you ultimately select, you can be confident it will include many opportunities to experience the local culture and to have exhilarating up-close encounters with wildlife.

The century-old Fairmont the Norfolk continues to be Nairobi’s finest and best-known hotel. Long considered the traditional starting point for African safaris, the hotel’s Lord Delamere Terrace is a popular meeting place and an ideal spot to enjoy drinks and a light meal, morning to midnight. The hotel offers guests from around the world some of Kenya’s finest luxury accommodations, with 165 rooms and suites, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and a well-equipped health club with gym, sauna and steam room.
The Safari Lodge Experience Staying at an African safari lodge is a unique experience available to travelers on our Stars of South Africa and Golden Trails of East Africa itineraries. We meticulously selected luxurious, well-situated, award-winning properties that can provide our guests with attentive service and supreme comfort and privacy. All are beautifully decorated with hot and cold running water, air-conditioning, laundry service, electricity, telephones, Wi-Fi, hair dryers, mini bars, and in most cases, swimming pools. The most lavish lodges also have private decks with plunge pools and bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers. Most of our lodge partners are located on private game reserves, where you are guaranteed to see more animals. Unlike in a national park, game rangers within most of these private, unfenced concessions are allowed to drive vehicles off-road. This gives safari-goers opportunities to follow animals into the bush and witness their natural behavior from an exhilarating close-up perspective. Two-way radio communication between rangers also ensures good sightings. Private reserves can also offer open-top safari vehicles and night drives to glimpse game rarely seen during the day.
What to Expect on Safari A typical day on safari begins at sunrise, when animals are on the move. After a hot beverage and light snack, you will head off in an open-top four-wheel drive vehicle for a 3-4 hour game drive with a knowledgeable (and extremely sharp-eyed) game ranger. You might observe lions feasting on a kill from the previous night or a herd of grazing zebra, as your armed game ranger provides insightful commentary. Return to the lodge late morning for a generous brunch with cereals, fruit, yogurt and freshly baked bread and pastries, as well as hot items cooked to order. Afternoons are for napping, bird-watching, reading or perhaps taking a dip in the pool. Some lodges offer guided game walks or other activities, such as mountain biking, tennis or horseback riding. After High Tea in the mid-afternoon, you’ll head off for another exciting game drive. Your game ranger will stop in a scenic spot for short break with refreshments and sundowners (cocktails) before an evening bush drive returns you to the lodge. The perfect end to any day on safari might be reliving your latest adventures over a delicious five-star dinner. African lodges have a reputation for exquisitely prepared cuisine, with a range of options to suit every palate. If you wish, your meal might include exotic meats such as kudu or impala, as well as other traditional African foods. Continue the conversation over a nightcap at the lodge’s open-air bar, serenaded by the sounds of wildlife as you gaze up at a sky filled with stars. Tomorrow, another exciting day of adventure awaits! Luxurious lodges, exhilarating game drives, exceptional cuisine and dining under the stars…the time-honored features of a classic African safari.

The Game Reserves An African game reserve is an area of land specifically set aside for the purpose of conservation. More than a mere piece of land that supports wildlife, a game reserve places strong emphasis on protecting vulnerable eco-systems and implementing sustainable conservation practices. The primary goal is to maintain indigenous wildlife within its native habitat, thus creating an ideal environment where the animal population can grow at a natural and sustainable rate.
Manyeleti Game Reserve
Lake Manyara National Park
This private concession within the Greater Kruger National Park is a pristine wilderness reserve abounding in “Big Five” game and spectacular bird life. The area is unique for its minimal vehicle density and thus offers a truly exclusive safari experience, with possible glimpses of the elusive leopard. (Stars of South Africa, Tintswalo Safari Lodge)
This unusually diverse park and its alkaline lake attract vast populations of water birds and a wide range of animals. Located in the shadow of the Great Rift Valley, the park is particularly known for its treeclimbing lions, which may be seen sleeping off the heat of the day on a sturdy branch. (Golden Trails of East Africa, Escarpment Luxury Lodge)

Some of Africa’s most revered game reserves boast multiple eco-systems – sometimes as many as five – all of which support an interdependent balance of diverse plant and animal life, as well as a protected and pristine environment where wildlife can truly thrive. Below, we’ve provided an overview of the renowned game reserves visited on our land safari itineraries, Stars of South Africa and Golden Trails of East Africa.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area This vast protected area contains the Ngorongoro Crater, often called “Africa’s Eden” and “The 8th Wonder of the World.” Formed when the cone of a volcano collapsed into itself millions of years ago, the 100 square mile crater is now home to wildebeest, lion, zebra and black rhino. (Golden Trails of East Africa, The Manor at Ngorongoro)
Serengeti National Park Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famed for its annual Migration and unparalleled gameviewing. It is home to buffalo, elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, jackal, topi, impala, gazelle and countless other species. (Golden Trails of East Africa, Serengeti Migration Camp)
SINGITA GAME RESERVES - THE BEST OF AFRICA Singita – or “place of miracles” – is world-renowned for providing the ultimate safari experience in Africa and has been recognized with virtually every top hotel and travel award. A desire to balance hospitality, conservation and community sets Singita apart and has served as the company’s core mission from its beginning. Singita believes that having a very limited number of guests is essential for minimizing each lodge’s environmental impact.
This not only benefits the environment, it also creates up-close and intimate experiences for guests, with many opportunities to interact with nature and learn about conservation. Another key focus for Singita is its dedication to assisting local communities. Thus far, a number of successful initiatives have made a significant difference in the lives of the people who live near Singita’s pristine and beautiful properties.
SINGITA SWENI LODGE
SINGITA SABORA TENTED CAMP
SINGITA KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH AFRICA
SINGITA GRUMETI RESERVES, TANZANIA
The N’wanetsi concession is a natural wonderland that represents one of the few remaining unexplored areas in Africa. Located on the eastern side of Kruger National Park, the reserve boasts some of the best views in southern Africa, with diverse habitats that support a fascinating array of wildlife. This is lion country, and the lion prides here are among the largest in the world. (Stars of South Africa, Singita Sweni Lodge)
The untouched wilderness of the Singita Grumeti Reserves in northern Tanzania near Serengeti National Park. The wildebeest Migration, perhaps the greatest wildlife show on earth, bisects this reserve every year. Successful conservation and diverse habitats provide this area with a well-established year-round population of game, approximately 70 different species in all.
