Centennial Committee News John R. Lawson, II
D
ear Membership, Happy New Year from the Centennial Committee! We are beginning this year with a very busy list of enhancements, improvements, and totally new and exciting renovations that will provide additional activities for all our Members and their Guests. We began the year by sanding, polishing, and sealing the marble floors in the lobby and repairing all broken thresholds.
Next, we consolidated all the offices of the General Manager, Food and Beverage Managers, and Catering Manager into the space that was previously used as the second floor Boardroom. Recently we began demolition of the first-floor management offices that will be repurposed into a state-of-the-art Executive Boardroom that will seat up to 16 at a large conference table, include Audio Visual equipment and other business amenities; as well as have its own galley! All of which to meet our growing demand for business meetings and private dinners for our Members. Demolition has begun in the Men’s Card room, the Men’s Grill, and a portion of the east end of the Men’s Locker Room. These spaces will be renovated and remodeled into a Wine Tasting and Wine Storage Room, a Sports Bar and Game Room, and a Cigar Room, respectively. Fortunately, we had many excess and unoccupied lockers in the current space, allowing us to use that space and still provide lockers for new Members and transient Guests. The name of the new downstairs improvements will be ‘The Cellar” and it will be open to Men and Women that are 21 years old or above. Meetings with the Contractor, Architect and Interior Designer started a few months ago and are targeting a completion by Memorial Day weekend.

Nickolai was born in Perm, Russia in 1991.
He was adopted from a Siberian orphanage two years later by an American couple and moved to the United Nickolai Walko States. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014. Walko started to use masking tape not for its original intentions to mask off certain areas for paint to cover but more so to produce high contrast, intricate, and stylized works of art. He was introduced to the medium at an early stage in his career. At the same time, he also began experimenting with copper. Walko has always retained a passion for sculpture and the exploration of resources. His artwork is heavily influenced by anatomy, archaeology, aviation, history, and mythology. He desires to portray forms, figures, and landscapes through these non-traditional materials. Acrylic and latex paint also plays an important role in the work by providing a strong background color or blocks of color to help give contrast to the black masking tape. In a way the tape acts as a skin and the xacto knife, the scalpel. Cutting the tape and pulling sections up reveals the subject matter below, whether it be an artifact, a landscape, or actual anatomy. He produces these works like a surgeon and removing the skin (tape) provides access for the public to view the images beneath in such stylized diagrams or scenes. Through much exploration and research, the work is always evolving.
Artist of the Month
Mattison was born and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia where her grandparents and little brother still reside. In high school she was in the Science and Medicine Academy and spent four years on the women’s varsity soccer team. After graduation she attended Christopher Newport University and in 2021 she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Science. Mattison has been with James River Country Club for over two years and has been an exemplary employee. She takes great pride in her work and was a rock for the Club during our staffing shortage over the summer. Mattison led the charge at the Cabana in the early summer and she was quickly promoted to Cabana Shift Leader. She is currently seeking employment in her degree field in Newport News, but we hope to have her with us in the summers for many years to come!

A Message from the Golf Pro Ryan Smith
A long list of projects awaits us through the remainder of our (hopefully) brief winter. We are continuing to clean and organize all our members’ bags and push carts stored in the cart barn including an influx of electric push carts. Our team has detailed the entire riding cart fleet and has fixed some lingering issues that plagued us through the Fall. The outside staff will continue with a few larger projects this winter including a renovation of the club repair room, which will double as a shoeshine and repair room in the near future. A special thanks to Ethan Michaux, Outside Operations Supervisor, and Michael Wesson, Assistant Golf Professional, for their hard work leading these projects. On the inside, our team has been working to build a higher floor to our operation to reach even greater heights. We will be working on a few projects in the simulator room throughout the next eight weeks to create additional storage and improve the member experience in the space without interrupting member usage. Led by Claudia Deyerle, Golf Shop Manager, we are creating an operations manual that will be used regularly by our team for daily operations and are designing an effective onboarding program for new hires in the future. Other projects include the digitization of files, ordering of merchandise, and building up our fitting and demo equipment supplies for the membership to enjoy. Looking toward the Spring, our golf professionals are finalizing the 2022 calendar following the guidance of the Golf Committee. Our team is finalizing the dates and times for events over the coming weeks and hope to have a complete calendar released to the membership soon. A few events have been added to the 2022 schedule in the hopes of increasing participation and a few have been modified to further bolster their already strong reputation. Alongside the release of the calendar will be the program offerings for the 2022 season. Included in these offerings will be a rejuvenated junior golf program with options for our youngest golfers ages three to five and also our teenagers looking to build their game towards a successful amateur career or even just a lifelong enjoyment of the game. Juniors will not be the only ones seeing a facelift for their programs as we look to build on the success of our Ladies “Three Hole Club” by getting them past three and onto six, nine, and eighteen holes this Spring! With an exciting 2022 ahead, we also want to take a moment to thank the membership for their tremendous support for our Golf Operations team over the past year. It has been tough dealing with continued staffing shortages, supply chain backups, and the unpredictability in all facets of our lives. Our team fought hard through the Fall and Winter and we cannot thank the members enough for their well wishes and generosity throughout the holiday season. On a personal note, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many of you over the past seven months and look forward to further developing relationships with you all over the season ahead. I cannot be more proud to be a part of the James River family and am excited to see what our operations team can accomplish in 2022 to make our club second to none. Stay warm, stay healthy, and we will see you all soon! Ryan Smith Director of Golf
