F ROM THE E DITOR Spring is upon us at James River Country Club. The thing I love most about spring is the renewed sense of hope it brings; the promise of fun- lled summer days ahead, and the expectation of forging new friendships and creating lasting memories. Our grounds are transforming before our eyes as the foggy haze of winter fades away and sunlight lingers a bit longer each day. All around are the subtle changes in hue as the grass grows greener and budding owers begin to bloom. The air is buzzing with excitement for the beginning of a busy golf, racquet, and swim season. Excitement grows too for the nearing completion of the many Capital projects around the Club. As Toni Sorenson said "Spring is far more than just a changing of seasons; it's a rebirth of the spirit." As we shift into spring I hope all of you nd James River Country Club to be your home away from home. Soak in the sunlight and take in the un-paralleled view as you dine on the patio. Dance the night away with us on Thursday nights. Enjoy the many social and sporting events to come. This bodes to be an unforgettable spring and summer, and as always, we are happy to call all of you family.

APRIL

He was adopted from a Siberian orphanage two years later by an American couple and moved to the United States. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Virginia Commonwealth N I C KO L A I W A L KO University in 2014. Walko started to use masking tape not for its original intentions to mask off certain areas for paint to cover but more so to produce high contrast, intricate, and stylized works of art. He was introduced to the medium at an early stage in his career. At the same time, he also began experimenting with copper. Walko has always retained a passion for sculpture and the exploration of resources. His artwork is heavily in uenced by anatomy, archaeology, aviation, history, and mythology. He desires to portray forms, gures, and landscapes through these non-traditional materials. Acrylic and latex paint also plays an important role in the work by providing a strong background color or blocks of color to help give contrast to the black masking tape. In a way the tape acts as a skin and the xacto knife, the scalpel. Cutting the tape and pulling sections up reveals the subject matter below, whether it be an artifact, a landscape, or actual anatomy. He produces these works like a surgeon and removing the skin (tape) provides access for the public to view the images beneath in such stylized diagrams or scenes. Through much exploration and research, the work is always evolving.

J

ames River Country Club would like to recognize Isabella “Bella” Holmes as our Employee of the Month for April. You may recognize her mainly as a hostess from the River Room, but she always lends a hand wherever she is needed including banquet events and behind the scenes with administrative tasks. She attends Tidewater Community College majoring in Hospitality. In her spare time, she enjoys shopping, spending time outdoors, hanging out with her friends, and drinking LOTS of iced coffee!

M EMBERSHIP Membership Highlight A Letter from Walter Price Dear Conrad, The Club did a truly great job in hosting my celebration of 100 years. The food was delicious - hot foods were hot and cold foods were cold. I wanted to especially commend Kristin for all of her valuable help. She was always available, pleasant, capable, and reassuring when I got a little anxious over a supposed problem. Everyone working at the actual party did a wonderful job and I deeply appreciate their efforts. Thank you for knowing how to make things work smoothly! Sincerely, Walter Price

G OLF SPRING GROUNDS MAINTENANCE UPDATE ROB WILMANS

Spring is so beautiful here at JRCC. The beds have all been mulched, trees and owers are popping, it has to be the prettiest spot on the peninsula. All the beds have been mulched over the last 2 weeks. We buy the mulch by the tractor trailer load with each truck containing 75 yards of mulch. We will put out 3 trucks this spring to beautify the property. The team was busy last week prepping some areas for sod. The bulk of the rst load will go to the practice tee and some other spots on 1. We will be moving to 18 with the next load. At the practice tee we are installing a different variety of bermuda around the back of the tee and a strip on the tee. Wear tolerance will be assessed and if the Tahoma-31 stands up better than the Celebration we will look to convert the entire tee at a future date. Greens aeration is scheduled for April 11th. We will use the same process that we did on the putting green a couple of weeks ago. It should be smooth and the greens will heal faster as the days get longer.
