M EMBERSHIP M AY
Member of the Month CASSIE LAM
M y family and I became members of the club two years ago.
The membership was a surprise 10-year anniversary gift for my golf loving husband, Phi. We met at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 2003. After graduation he returned to his native state of California and served as chief resident in family medicine at UC Davis. I stayed back on the east coast and finished my general anesthesia and pediatric anesthesia training at Georgetown and Children’s National Medical Center, respectively. After residency we moved back to my home town in York County where we are raising our two beautiful, energetic boys, Luke and Finn. They are in 1st and 3rd grade at Dare Elementary School, excelling in math and recess. My husband, in addition to being the manager of their York County Little League team, is also serving as their golf coach and hoping to enter them in the next drive, chip and putt competition. For the past eight years I have been an anesthesiologist at Riverside Regional Medical Center where I have served as the chairman of the department for the past two years and the assistant chairman for the preceding three. I was a candy striper at Riverside in my York High School days and it’s been a great experience coming full circle. Phi began his career in urgent care centers and served as the medical director of the Newport News Patient First for five years. He is currently pursuing his dream of opening his own direct primary care office in Yorktown in June of this year. “CountyMed DPC” will offer a membership-based practice catering to a limited number of patients, providing professional and personalized care. We enjoy celebrating the holidays at the club, hosting birthday parties and annual Christmas parties, playing golf, sipping cocktails by the pool and giving Brian a run for his money on the tennis courts. JRCC offers us a wonderful staycation experience and we are proud to be a part of the JRCC family. James River Country Club

All play begins on the first tee box unless instructed to do so by a Golf Professional. At least one player from each group must check in with the golf shop prior to heading to the tee. Players must reserve tee times and be prepared to play five minutes prior to their designated tee time. Players will forfeit their times if they are not prepared to play at the reserved time. Tee times are required until 5:00 PM each day that the course is open for play. Tee times can be reserved through the club website or by calling the golf shop. Players can begin to reserve times at 8:00 AM, eight days prior to the day of play. Tee times that will not be used are to be released as soon as possible. Holes on the course are to be played in order with players following the designed routing. Players that skip between holes may be asked to return to their original position on the course. The golf course and its practice areas are closed Mondays. No play or practice is permitted except on designated holidays when an opening will be posted and communicated to the membership. Players are not permitted to practice on the golf course unless accompanied by a Golf Professional while taking a lesson. Bag tags are available to all members and are recommended for all. These can be obtained in the golf shop. Five-somes are permitted solely at the discretion of the Director of Golf. Any unapproved five-some will be asked to split up or drop a player. Junior golfers under 10 years of age may only play when accompanied by an adult golfer while on the course unless authorized by the Director of Golf. All unaccompanied junior golfers 10 years of age and older may play anytime at the discretion of the Director of Golf. Players are asked to maintain an efficient pace of play while on the course. This means that players should complete nine (9) holes in two hours and 18 holes in four hours. Groups that are unable to maintain this pace will be asked to let faster players through, if feasible. If groups playing slower than the dictated pace are creating backups on the course and cannot return to the stipulated pace, they will be asked to skip holes to catch up. Cell phones should be placed on silent mode prior to the beginning of play. Calls should be limited to emergency needs whenever possible and should only be placed or received when other players will not be disturbed. Music is permitted on the golf course but should be kept at a volume that does not disturb other golfers and cannot be heard outside of the player’s vicinity. In the event of severe weather, the club is outfitted with a lightning detection system. This system monitors electrical current for the potential of lightning and an alarm will sound if the system detects a pre-determined current. When the siren does sound, all players must stop and seek shelter immediately. One (1) long siren blast is the “Red Alert” and indicates a storm is present. Three (3) long siren blasts are the “All Clear” and play may resume dependent on course conditions. Running, walking, exercising, bicycle riding, skateboarding and all other activities outside of traditional golf activities are not permitted on the cart paths.
Caring for the Course 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Players shall repair all divots using the sand provided on the golf carts or push carts. Players shall repair all ball-marks on greens prior to putting and fix any spike marks prior to advancing to the next hole. Player shall enter and exit all bunkers on the low side and please rake your way out, leaving behind no footprints. Players shall replace the flagstick prior to leaving the green. Following play, please return all golf carts to the cart barn or an outside operations team member.
