M EMBERSHIP CLUB PRESIDENT LINDSEY CARNEY
A s we welcome May with open arms, it is appropriate
and timely to thank YOU, the membership, for your continued support of James River Country Club. Men’s and Women’s Opening Days were preludes to what promises to be a phenomenal 2022 golf season. Pickleball courts are lively; there have been sightings of tiny superheroes (and even the Easter Bunny) throughout the Clubhouse; and the River Room, Huntington Lounge and St. Andrew’s Room continue to well serve our Membership for meals, meetings, history and fellowship. And, there’s more to come! Similar to the beautiful flowers and plantings blooming across the Club grounds, additional activities throughout the golf and tennis facilities, back lawn and River Room patio are scheduled and planned for first-class membership experience and satisfaction. We’re only a few weeks away from the opening of the pools and cabana, and we’re all looking forward to seeing our River Ratz take to the lanes very soon!
Please be sure to introduce yourself and give a warm James River welcome to our wonderful new Members who have decided, like us, to call James River home. A healthy Membership and stable dues base will ensure our ability to continue to make improvements to our facilities while providing creative offerings to exceed your membership expectations. Our goal remains the same – providing an extraordinary membership experience to make certain that our members are happy, committed and active. Thank you to Conrad, the Department Heads and their loyal and dedicated staff for providing that experience daily. It is a privilege and an honor to serve as the President of James River Country Club, a club with rich tradition, founded with roots focused on being a modern golf and country club to serve as the center of social and athletic activities. There’s more, and possibly the best yet, to come. Lindsey Carney James River Country Club

Member of the Month CASSIE LAM
M y family and I became members of the club two years ago.
The membership was a surprise 10-year anniversary gift for my golf loving husband, Phi. We met at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 2003. After graduation he returned to his native state of California and served as chief resident in family medicine at UC Davis. I stayed back on the east coast and finished my general anesthesia and pediatric anesthesia training at Georgetown and Children’s National Medical Center, respectively. After residency we moved back to my home town in York County where we are raising our two beautiful, energetic boys, Luke and Finn. They are in 1st and 3rd grade at Dare Elementary School, excelling in math and recess. My husband, in addition to being the manager of their York County Little League team, is also serving as their golf coach and hoping to enter them in the next drive, chip and putt competition. For the past eight years I have been an anesthesiologist at Riverside Regional Medical Center where I have served as the chairman of the department for the past two years and the assistant chairman for the preceding three. I was a candy striper at Riverside in my York High School days and it’s been a great experience coming full circle. Phi began his career in urgent care centers and served as the medical director of the Newport News Patient First for five years. He is currently pursuing his dream of opening his own direct primary care office in Yorktown in June of this year. “CountyMed DPC” will offer a membership-based practice catering to a limited number of patients, providing professional and personalized care. We enjoy celebrating the holidays at the club, hosting birthday parties and annual Christmas parties, playing golf, sipping cocktails by the pool and giving Brian a run for his money on the tennis courts. JRCC offers us a wonderful staycation experience and we are proud to be a part of the JRCC family. James River Country Club

Nickolai was born in Perm, Russia in 1991.
MAY
He was adopted from a Siberian orphanage two years later by an American couple and moved to the United States. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Virginia Commonwealth NICKOLAI WALKO University in 2014. Walko started to use masking tape not for its original intentions to mask off certain areas for paint to cover but more so to produce high contrast, intricate, and stylized works of art. He was introduced to the medium at an early stage in his career. At the same time, he also began experimenting with copper. Walko has always retained a passion for sculpture and the exploration of resources. His artwork is heavily influenced by anatomy, archaeology, aviation, history, and mythology. He desires to portray forms, figures, and landscapes through these non-traditional materials. Acrylic and latex paint also plays an important role in the work by providing a strong background color or blocks of color to help give contrast to the black masking tape. In a way the tape acts as a skin and the xacto knife, the scalpel. Cutting the tape and pulling sections up reveals the subject matter below, whether it be an artifact, a landscape, or actual anatomy. He produces these works like a surgeon and removing the skin (tape) provides access for the public to view the images beneath in such stylized diagrams or scenes. Through much exploration and research, the work is always evolving.
Artist of the Month
Jack was born in San Antonio Texas, and raised in Hampton, Virginia, and now resides in Newport News with his Fiancé, Ana, and his dogs Mocha and Lily. He has worked as a cook for 15 years, and since coming to the Club, his talent has shone through. Throughout our struggles with staffing in the kitchen, Jack has continued to be a strong leader, helping Chef Matt in any capacity possible, and always going above and beyond the call of duty. His bubbly personality and big laugh are contagious in the kitchen. Often you can catch him dancing while he cooks, which is a testament to the pure love he has for his craft. We are so thankful to have an outstanding employee like Jack, and appreciate his hard work, dedication, and leadership. Congratulations Jack! James River Country Club

G OLF F ROM THE D IRECTOR OF G OLF / H EAD G OLF P ROFESSIONAL We hope that our James River family has been able to enjoy the warming temperatures and green grass that has greeted us the past few weeks. Our 2022 season has begun in earnest with our Ladies’ and Men’s tournament season and our Spring instructional programs starting up. Thank you to everyone that has already participated in our events, and we look forward to seeing those who have yet to thaw out completely! Our Ladies Opening Day suffered from a bit of wind and cool air, but our ladies persevered! Luckily, the cool days are few and far between and the calendar continues its turn. The Ladies’ Member-Guest is a mere three weeks away and looks to be another great event for all who join us. Our team is particularly excited about how many new Lady Golfers we have seen out in the past few weeks. We have some returning to the game after years away and others starting to take up the game for the first time. We hope you all can experience the joy of a perfect shot and stick with the game for many years to come! Mike Mason helped us all ring in the Men’s tournament season with a splash by acing the 17th hole during Men’s Opening Day! The event helped kick off our Men’s season by providing some Augusta classics for the participants like Pimento Cheese and fast greens. Sign-ups for our men’s events have been phenomenal including over 70 individuals taking part in our season long match play events and new registrations for our Spring Member-Member coming in every day. Lastly, our junior golfers are the present and future of JRCC. They help to make the club a special place and their growth on the course helps fuel our passion for the game. We have had some tough weather to start our Spring classes, but that won’t stop our kids! They have battled high winds and waves of pollen to improve their games over the past month. All of them will have a chance to prove their skills this coming weekend in our annual JRCC Drive, Chip, & Putt competition. All juniors at the club are welcome regardless of how often they get out and play! For those of you that have stopped through the Golf Shop, you are sure to have notice how great the space has looked! A special thanks to our Golf Shop Manager, Claudia Deyerle, and Member Service Specialist, Bri Schilling, for all their hard work beautifying the space and always ensuring our membership is taken care of on a daily basis. You will see many new faces on our Outside Operations Team as summer approaches as we bring in a new group of team members. We have happily seen a few of our team members getting internships or graduating onto the next chapter of their lives and we wish them nothing but success in their endeavors! Please take the time to welcome our new team members into the JRCC family on your next visit! As always, thank you to our membership for making JRCC a home for our entire Golf Operations team and for your continued support. Ryan Smith James River Country Club

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE
UPDATE ROB WILMANS DIRECTOR OF GOLF AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE
The Bermuda is greening up nicely for this time of year. We missed the frost a week ago, so the Bermuda did not get stunted in the fairways or tees. Knock on wood, we won’t have any more super cold nights and things will continue to green up the rest of the spring.
Unfortunately, we did have some damage around some of the greens from the herbicide spray in February. Much of it will grow back, but we will have to sod some of these areas. Spraying herbicide is risky business around greens and I felt like the risk was worth it to eradicate weeds and off-type grasses from this area. Greens are healing nicely from aeration; the mowers are back out in the regular rotation, and the holes are disappearing quickly. We went two weeks this year from aeration until the first mow due to lack of growth. We usually mow after one week, but cooler temperatures and a heavy sand application delayed the first cut. After three weeks we are right back where we should be with super playable greens.
The sod project on 18, 1, and the practice area went great! The sod is rooted and those locations look awesome!! Summer annuals will be arriving this week, outing season is in full swing, and hopefully, the pollen levels will drop some this week. Training new staff is high on our priority list right now, along with making sure to enjoy the benefits of working here on this beautiful property. Here are a couple of pictures of the sunrise James River Country Club
