M EMBERSHIP CLUB PRESIDENT LINDSEY CARNEY
Dear
JRCC Family, The Memorial Day weekend has come to a close, and I hope you will join me in lauding Club Manager Conrad Lickel and his team for their extraordinary efforts in kicking off summer. The pools, pool decks, beach and cabana well served the start of a vibrant and active season! The Club's facilities, membership and finances are in fantastic shape and the existing excellent membership experience continues to get better every day. James River Country Club is dedicated to achieving excellence through superior service and a commitment to continuous improvement. JRCC strives to exceed member, guest and employee expectations by demonstrating genuine care and concern in all that is done and for everyone who is on grounds. That is why we have been sending out the weekly rules and policies refreshers - to continue our Membership's commitment to the health, happiness, and well-being of all members and staff. JRCC is a place for all to enjoy a superior membership and guest experience.
Conrad and his team have likewise made the commitment to care and concern for membership experience and are tasked with the difficult challenge of enforcing these policies to the best of their ability for the benefit of all our members. At the suggestion of our committee chairs and the Board, beginning June 7, any member or memberguest who is non-compliant with the attire policy, code of conduct, hours of operation, etc., will be asked to exit the premises. This is an effort to create a comfortable atmosphere for all and to continue building on our strong foundation for our Club's future. On behalf of the committees and the Board, thank you for your commitment to the club. I look forward to seeing you in the clubhouse, on the course, or at the pool. There's more, and possibly the best yet, to come! Thank you, Lindsey Carney James River Country Club

and I met at Warwick high school when he was sixteen and I was fourteen. Back in those days, J ohnny our parents wouldn’t let us out of their sight, so we were only allowed to go on dates on our parents boats and at Merry Point Beach where they could keep a watchful eye on us. Even at that young age we knew though, it was love at first sit, and after a short courtship we were married. We will have been married now for 62 years as of August 2022, and what a wonderful marriage it has been! Our family consists of two wonderful sons, Glenn and Cliff; four perfect grandchildren, Travis, Sydney, Owen and Emma Kate; and our precious great grandchildren Bella and Noah. Each one of them enhances our lives in their own special way. Johnny recently retired on May 1, 2022 from the HII Shipbuilding after 60 years of service. He worked for Newport News Shipbuilding, Tenneco, Northrup Gruman and Huntington Ingalls. He is very proud of his years there and of being a Master Shipbuilder. Johnny worked most recently with the operating fleet of nuclear submarines as a planning yard analyst. His reputation was that he was the man to call if you needed any information about submarines - past or present. I was a stay at home mom who became a marketing director for shopping centers. I also owned Promotional Activities Art Shows; a company that organized and produced art and craft shows in convention centers and in shopping malls in four states. My company grew to be one of the top companies on the East Coast in that particular field. We are settling well into retirement; Johnny works in his vegetable garden and I play tennis at the Club several times a week. We go to the Outer Banks as often as possible where we enjoy surf fishing. Over the years we have fished from our boat, from charter boats, and from the surf (my favorite!) We have loved being members of James River Country Club. It has been a special place for us to eat and attend social events and the entire dining room and bar staff always take extraordinary care of us. We are honored to represent James River Country Club as members of the month. James River Country Club

Artist of the Month NICKOLAI WALKO
N
ickolai was born in Perm, Russia in 1991. He was adopted from a Siberian orphanage two years later by an American couple and moved to the United States. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014. Walko started to use masking tape not for its original intentions to mask off certain areas for paint to cover but more so to produce high contrast, intricate, and stylized works of art. He was introduced to the medium at an early stage in his career. At the same time, he also began experimenting with copper. Walko has always retained a passion for sculpture and the exploration of resources. His artwork is heavily influenced by anatomy, archaeology, aviation, history, and mythology. He desires to portray forms, figures, and landscapes through these non-traditional materials. Acrylic
and latex paint also plays an important role in the work by providing a strong background color or blocks of color to help give contrast to the black masking tape. In a way the tape acts as a skin and the xacto knife, the scalpel. Cutting the tape and pulling sections up reveals the subject matter below, whether it be an artifact, a landscape, or actual anatomy. He produces these works like a surgeon and removing the skin (tape) provides access for the public to view the images beneath in such stylized diagrams or scenes. Through much exploration and research, the work is always evolving.
River Country Club would like to J ames congratulate Tina Tilfas for earning the coveted award of Employee of the Month for June! Tina has been a part of the JRCC family since November of 2021. You may recognize her as a hard working member of the banquet staff, but she always takes the time to help wherever she is needed. If she isn’t busy with the multitude of duties carried out by our banquet staff, you’ll find her helping clear tables and check on members in the dining room.

After some very unusual spring weather the course is finally starting to glow. Fairways are back on a regular mowing schedule; greens are tightening up with the applications of growth regulator, and the rough is finally jumping. We have marked the areas around the greens that need to be sodded, and the grass will arrive on June 8th. The practice tee is on the grass again after the lengthiest time on the mats since I started here. Apparently, no amount of fertilizer can force Mother Nature into getting that grass growing. Last week we replaced our aging pump station that is the life blood of our irrigation system. The club was proactive in making the switch before we had a catastrophic failure that could put the course in jeopardy. The project involved using a crane to take off the roof of the house and to make the switch. Hopefully we can get into a drier pattern this week so everyone can get out and enjoy the course!
