M EMBERSHIP CLUB PRESIDENT LINDSEY CARNEY

n behalf of JRCC, we wish you and O yours a happy, healthy and celebratory Fourth of July! All seasons are great at our club, but summer is the best! The pools are vibrant, weddings and gatherings are abundant on the lawn and golf and tennis continue to be strong, unrivaled benefits for our entire membership. None of this could be possible without the staff at JRCC. Please take the time to thank our staff at the club. They tirelessly strive to make our membership experience the very best, and for that we are grateful. Our club is in excellent shape - food and beverage match (and beat!) any other club and certainly most restaurants, our events will keep your schedule full of activities,

golf and tennis have the very best facilities and let us not forget about the beach and pier! Our story tells itself ! Membership is growing - we are no longer the best kept secret in town. We're just the best! Thank you, as always, for your dedicated loyalty and membership. We continue to plan, forward think and intend to create a continuing and better membership experience. There is more, and possibly the best, to come. Thank you, Lindsey James River Country Club

M EMBERSHIP W

J U LY hat a pleasant surprise to be named Member of the Month. For those of you who A N D R E W & T A M M Y J O R DA N may not know us, Andrew works for TowneBank where he manages the Mortgage Division for the Peninsula, while I have been in public s e r v i c e f o r ove r t h i r t y years with the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Newport News (and no, I don’t watch the show!!). Andrew grew up here in Newport News and I was an Air Force brat, but now have lived here longer than anywhere else and am grateful to call this home. In 1995, we joined the JRCC. Our daughter was just a toddler at the time, and our son was on the way. They’ve grown up in this community, and we made so many fond memories on the swim team, at junior golf and tennis camps, and having multiple brunches with Santa and the Easter Bunny. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, our family enjoyed many adventures over the years. Andrew enjoys golf (as much as anyone can enjoy golf) when he can get away to get out on the course. He’s participated in many Member Guest Tournaments and some of you may remember he and his partner Frank’s interesting outfits, which were sure to bring a smile to the face of anyone who saw them! I have also enjoyed Member Guest Tournaments, serving the members and guests drinks and good humor. Andrew has also served on multiple committees for the club, as well as serving on the board for several years. JRCC is a great community where we have formed lifelong friendships. We have enjoyed Oyster Roasts, lots of special events, and on most Friday nights, we can be found in the bar, unwinding from the week. There are great amenities here at the club, not least of which are the staff, all of whom we appreciate. Andrew and I look forward to many, many more years of enjoying the club with our family and friends.

JULY

Employee of the Month DELANEY KOPP

I

have been drawing and painting my whole life, even before earning my BFA and while raising children and working as a writer and graphic designer. But a move from Virginia to Alabama in 2008 coincided with the death of my father, and I found painting to be an excellent path to healing. After plenty of workshops and Plein Air events, exhibiting and selling my paintings in several galleries on the Gulf Coast, then finding a botanical painting instructor and group, I was fully immersed and growing as an artist. I have been back in Virginia since 2019 and I am lucky to be able to do what I love, and share and promote Plein Air and botanical painting. During the pandemic, I was asked to lead a Plein Air class in Hampton, and it was a great opportunity to gather outside and paint from a safe distance. I continue to mentor a few painting students in my studio and paint or sketch as many beautiful and interesting things as I can.

D

elaney was raised in Leesburg Virginia where she lived with her five brothers and sisters. She is a rising senior at Christopher Newport University. She is majoring in Criminology, with a Sociology and Anthropology minor. Delaney aspires to go into Child Protective Services when she graduates. When she’s not busy with her studies, or caring for her two pets, she’s moonlighting as a rockstar at James River Country Club. Delaney is one of those rare triple-threat employees who can truly do it all. She is a fantastic waitress, an attentive bartender, and in the cabana she is a natural born leader. She has a strong but calm presence and an innate ability to problem solve in tough situations. We are blessed to have her as long as she continues on her scholastic journey, and look forward to watching her grow and achieve all her dreams. Congratulations Delaney, our July Employee of the Month!

I started painting 13 years ago so

that my wife and I could have visual reminders of our travels. Painting has been an excellent way to establish a history of our trips and visual reminders of the great moments we have shared with family and friends. I have had the pleasure and good fortune to be guided on my journey by Brian Murphy, Susan Burgoyne, Karen Spaulding and my favorite Texas artist, Kay Walton. Each has helped me to develop my

unique style and technique. I make sure to challenge myself with each painting. I especially enjoy doing commissions for others where I create a still life from their favorite treasures or a depiction of their favorite event or trip.

After retirement, I wanted to broaden

my activities. Several friends were enthusiastic about art lessons with Susan Burgoyne. Despite thinking that I lacked artistic ability, Susan convinced me to try it. Subsequently, I realize that artistic skills can be learned with commitment, focus and the humility to absorb and evaluate criticism from multiple sources. The process has been fun, plus intriguing, as my brain and mental focus explores new territory.

W hile practicing radiology by day,

between 1965 and 1990, I was able to make it to an evening painting class just down the street at the studio/home of Jack Clifton, one of the first artists to make a living from his art in Hampton. After he passed away, I began taking classes with Betty Anglin, followed by James Warwick Jones, pre-pandemic. Working in watercolor or acrylic paint, I enjoy painting figures, animals, buildings and whatever else interests me while applying the foundations I have learned over the years.

I began painting art the age of twelve,

taking lessons after school from a local artist in my small hometown in North Carolina. Essentially, we were taught how to replicate larger works in oil from smaller prints. For many years afterward I occasionally attended workshops, group instruction, and zoom classes. Oil painting is my passion – I especially like painting landscapes. Most of my artwork comes from photographs I’ve taken. If a painting is not coming along exactly as I want it to be, I set it aside and come back to it sometimes months later! It is a hobby after all and it should be pleasing!

Being more of a doodler and an

artistic dreamer, I have enjoyed an amateur’s pursuit of art for as long as I can remember. Influenced by a father full of curiosity and with an innate talent to “make” just about anything, I have long been intrigued by the colors, textures, and forms of the everyday object. I enjoy painting for my family and friends; creating “love gifts” of any sort is my true passion.

Upon my retirement eight years ago

my wife presented to me a get-out-ofthe-house gift of painting lessons. Through thoughtful and very talented instruction I have progressed from simply slopping paint on canvas to the use of oils to express a fascination with shapes and color.
