ear JRCC Family, It is hard to believe that August is here! July proved to be a particularly successful month for the Club due to your support and the leadership of our JRCC golf and grounds, tennis, food and beverage, banquets and waterfront teams. Our littlest Members celebrated the month by attending KE camps, our seasoned golfers enjoyed the unrivaled golf course and gorgeous grounds, our newest golfers learned new skills in golf camp, our Members enjoyed exciting new menu offerings and continued the summer festivities with Tacos and Tequila at the cabana. And, let’s not forget our River Ratz who wrapped up a successful season with several River Ratz recently competing in the City Meet due in large part to our growing membership and new families with young JRCC family members!

The Board of Directors, General Manager Conrad Lickel and the Department Heads strive to make James River Country Club your hometown resort and continue to work together to be your first choice for dining, athletics, special events, phenomenal Membership experience and assisting in creating lasting memories for your family. As you will see in the weekly newsletter, there’s a full calendar of events – Something for Everyone – in August. There’s more, and possibly the best yet, to come! See you at the Club! Best wishes, Lindsey James River Country Club

icole and I met at Wake Forest University. After Nicole graduated, she stayed at Wake Forest to complete her MA in Psychology - then to West Virginia University for her doctoral degree in Life-span Developmental Psychology. I moved to Charlotte for a year before returning to Wake Forest for my MBA. In 1997, we finally got married and moved to Pocatello, Idaho for Nicole's first faculty position at Idaho State University. We really enjoyed our time there, but always knew we would return to the Southeast at some point.

We moved to Yorktown in 2004 when Nicole joined the faculty in Psychology at Christopher Newport University. Our daughters were 3 and 1 when we moved here. So, though they were born in Idaho, Virginia is home to them. Nicole has loved being a part of the CNU community and is beginning her tenth year as Dean of Natural and Behavior Sciences. I joined a semiconductor company in Idaho and was able to transition to a regional sales role when we moved. After 22 years, I changed industries in 2020 and now I am a Mortgage Banker with Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group. We are getting used to being empty nesters. Mia is a rising senior at Wake Forest University (following in our footsteps), and Marisa is a rising Sophomore, charting her own path at UVA. The house is quiet when they are away, and it is so great when they come home. In our time away from work, we enjoy being active, primarily CrossFit, biking, and hiking. We love golf and wish we had more time to relax on the course. We both enjoy playing and do our best to play in the Nine and Wines. You also often will see us in the lounge on Thursdays listening to music and enjoying the company. We just celebrated our 25th Anniversary and life is Good! James River Country Club

Artist of the Month KAREN SPAULDING FEATURING SELECT ART STUDENTS

I have been drawing and

painting my whole life, even before earning my BFA and while raising children and working as a writer and graphic designer. But a move from Virginia to Alabama in 2008 coincided with the death of my father, and I found painting to be an excellent path to healing. After plenty of workshops and Plein Air events, exhibiting and selling my paintings in several galleries on the Gulf Coast, then finding a botanical painting instructor and group, I was fully immersed and growing as an artist.

I have been back in Virginia since 2019 and I am lucky to be able to do what I love, and share and promote Plein Air and botanical painting. During the pandemic, I was asked to lead a Plein Air class in Hampton, and it was a great opportunity to gather outside and paint from a safe distance. I continue to mentor a few painting students in my studio and paint or sketch as many beautiful and interesting things as I can.

that my wife and I could have visual CHARLES ARMFIELD reminders of our travels. Painting has been an excellent way to establish a history of our trips and visual reminders of the great moments we have shared with family and friends. I have had the pleasure and good fortune to be guided on my journey by Brian Murphy, Susan Burgoyne, Karen Spaulding and my favorite Texas artist, Kay Walton. Each has helped me to develop my unique style and technique. I make sure to challenge myself with each painting. I especially enjoy doing commissions for others where I create a still life from their favorite treasures or a depiction of their favorite event or trip.

After retirement, I wanted to broaden

my activities. Several friends were enthusiastic about art lessons with Susan Burgoyne. Despite thinking that I lacked artistic ability, Susan convinced me to try it. Subsequently, I realize that artistic skills can be learned with commitment, focus and the humility to absorb and evaluate criticism from multiple sources. The process has been fun, plus intriguing, as my brain and mental focus explores new territory.

W hile practicing radiology by day,

between 1965 and 1990, I was able to make it to an evening painting class just down the street at the studio/home of Jack Clifton, one of the first artists to make a living from his art in Hampton. After he passed away, I began taking classes with Betty Anglin, followed by James Warwick Jones, pre-pandemic. Working in watercolor or acrylic paint, I enjoy painting figures, animals, buildings and whatever else interests me while applying the foundations I have learned over the years.

I began painting art the age of twelve,

taking lessons after school from a local artist in my small hometown in North Carolina. Essentially, we were taught how to replicate larger works in oil from smaller prints. For many years afterward I occasionally attended workshops, group instruction, and zoom classes. Oil painting is my passion – I especially like painting landscapes. Most of my artwork comes from photographs I’ve taken. If a painting is not coming along exactly as I want it to be, I set it aside and come back to it sometimes months later! It is a hobby after all and it should be pleasing! James River Country Club

artistic dreamer, I have enjoyed an amateur’s pursuit of art for as long as I can remember. Influenced by a father full of curiosity and with an innate talent to “make” just about anything, I have long been intrigued by the colors, textures, and forms of the everyday object. I enjoy painting for my family and friends; creating “love gifts” of any sort is my true passion.

Upon my retirement eight years ago

my wife presented to me a get-out-ofthe-house gift of painting lessons. Through thoughtful and very talented instruction I have progressed from simply slopping paint on canvas to the use of oils to express a fascination with shapes and color.
