Member of the Month Cleon Long

I am a native of Newport News and

a proud product of the Newport News Public School System. As a youth, I volunteered with various organizations such as St. Francis Nursing Home, tutoring students in the local Newport News schools, serving on the Newport News Superintendent’s Education Advisory Group, as well as being involved with the Mayor’s Youth Commission, and the Youth Task Force for the Newport News City Planning Commission. After graduating high school, I attended college in Atlanta, GA receiving a B.S. in General Science from Morehouse College and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Upon graduating from college, I

returned to my hometown in 2004. In 2011, I obtained a Professional Engineering License. Currently, I am an engineer with Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding. Additionally, I served on the Newport News Commission on Youth and Newport News Planning Commission. Currently, I serve on the Newport News Board of Zoning Appeals, Board of Trustees with the Virginia Living Museum, Board of Directors for Boys and Girls Club of Virginia Peninsula, Board of Directors Smart Beginnings Virginia Peninsula, is a member of the Warwick Rotary Club at City Center and volunteers with ministries within my parish. My wife Yalonda and I have lived in Newport News most of our lives and have one son Christian and a dog named Snoopy. Yalonda is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.S. in Psychology and a Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling from Liberty University. Currently, Yalonda works as an Embedded High School Counselor with the Upward Bound Program at Hampton University. She truly has a passion for children. She worked for the Hampton and Newport News Community Services Board, Newport News Child Protective Services Unit, and volunteered as a Court Appointed Child Advocate with Newport News CASA. As a family, we enjoy relaxing at the Club, attending local summer concerts at Port Warwick, spending time with family and friends, and weekly mass at Saint Vincent DePaul Catholic Church. Our most beloved memory is our wedding reception that was held at JRCC!

Nickolai was born in Perm, Russia in 1991.

He was adopted from a Siberian orphanage two years later by an American couple and moved to the United Nickolai Walko States. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014. Walko started to use masking tape not for its original intentions to mask off certain areas for paint to cover but more so to produce high contrast, intricate, and stylized works of art. He was introduced to the medium at an early stage in his career. At the same time, he also began experimenting with copper. Walko has always retained a passion for sculpture and the exploration of resources. His artwork is heavily influenced by anatomy, archaeology, aviation, history, and mythology. He desires to portray forms, figures, and landscapes through these non-traditional materials. Acrylic and latex paint also plays an important role in the work by providing a strong background color or blocks of color to help give contrast to the black masking tape. In a way the tape acts as a skin and the xacto knife, the scalpel. Cutting the tape and pulling sections up reveals the subject matter below, whether it be an artifact, a landscape, or actual anatomy. He produces these works like a surgeon and removing the skin (tape) provides access for the public to view the images beneath in such stylized diagrams or scenes. Through much exploration and research, the work is always evolving.

Artist of the Month

Mattison was born and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia where her grandparents and little brother still reside. In high school she was in the Science and Medicine Academy and spent four years on the women’s varsity soccer team. After graduation she attended Christopher Newport University and in 2021 she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Science. Mattison has been with James River Country Club for over two years and has been an exemplary employee. She takes great pride in her work and was a rock for the Club during our staffing shortage over the summer. Mattison led the charge at the Cabana in the early summer and she was quickly promoted to Cabana Shift Leader. She is currently seeking employment in her degree field in Newport News, but we hope to have her with us in the summers for many years to come!

Grounds Update As we have spring in our sights, I wanted to update the membership on what we have been doing over the winter and to prepare for spring. This fall we did not pre-emerge the golf course for winter weeds. We have been using the same product for the last 6 years and the weeds were becoming resistant to it. Hopefully taking a year o and cleaning up with a post emergent herbicide will break the chain. We treated all the Bermuda in February, while it was dormant, with a non-selective herbicide (Round-up). This included spraying right up to the edge of the green using a spray wand with a shield on it. During inclement weather we had a lot of work to do in the shop refurbishing the golf course accessories as well as maintaining the building we work out of. This included painting tee markers and ball washers, sanding and staining benches, as well as cleaning and paining in the shop. If you have been on the course over the last couple of weeks you have seen the work we have been doing on 14. There was a sink hole which we repaired, and we have been installing some drains near the lake to improve the wet area at the bottom of the hill. Deep tine aeration has continued, we have been redistributing and adding sand to the bunkers and completing winter maintenance on the landscape areas. All of this along with preparing for golf on nice days and cleaning up debris from the windy days has made for a busy o season.
