Member of the Month SAM ROSE

I am a graduate of James Madison University and attended Harvard University’s Executive Leadership AMP

program. I have worked as an executive at Ferguson Enterprises for 30 years. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula and Newport News Education Foundation.

My wife Tasha and I reside in the Riverside area of Newport News with our three kids, Cooper, Alex, and Harper and our two dogs, Tyson and Abby. We have two grown children, Tyler and Madison, who still reside in the area with our grandkids. Tasha is a graduate of Virginia Tech and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Hampton Roads Academy.

I am very active in Club activities, I participate in the golf tournaments, and even won my ight in the last member guest. Tyler, Madison, Alex and Harper have or are all swimmers for the JRCC swim team. Harper is an avid tennis player. Tasha serves on the swim team boosters and I am the chair for the Member Guest Tournament this year. We both enjoy playing pickle ball and twilight golf. When not at the Club, we are usually on the boat with friends!

M EMBERSHIP Nickolai was born in Perm, Russia in 1991.

He was adopted from a Siberian orphanage two years later by an American couple and moved to the United States. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Virginia Commonwealth N I C KO L A I W A L KO University in 2014. Walko started to use masking tape not for its original intentions to mask off certain areas for paint to cover but more so to produce high contrast, intricate, and stylized works of art. He was introduced to the medium at an early stage in his career. At the same time, he also began experimenting with copper. Walko has always retained a passion for sculpture and the exploration of resources. His artwork is heavily in uenced by anatomy, archaeology, aviation, history, and mythology. He desires to portray forms, gures, and landscapes through these non-traditional materials. Acrylic and latex paint also plays an important role in the work by providing a strong background color or blocks of color to help give contrast to the black masking tape. In a way the tape acts as a skin and the xacto knife, the scalpel. Cutting the tape and pulling sections up reveals the subject matter below, whether it be an artifact, a landscape, or actual anatomy. He produces these works like a surgeon and removing the skin (tape) provides access for the public to view the images beneath in such stylized diagrams or scenes. Through much exploration and research, the work is always evolving.

G OLF Grounds Maintenance Update | Rob Williams Director of Golf & Grounds Maintenance

The

maintenance team completed the work on the drain at 14 bridge last week and it is working great. There was a dying tree near the cart path on number 3 that has been dropping limbs and presenting a hazard for the golfers. Allen took the tree down and the staff hauled away the debris.

We have been busy mulching beds around the property, fertilizing the fescue areas under the trees, repairing broken drains, fertilizing owers and trying to get a spring cleaning on the rest of the property. Greens are back on a regular mowing schedule and are looking awesome! The bottle ll station has been de-winterized at 14 tee and is now ready for use. We should get the rest of the water coolers back out on the property this week. We have been working on the drinker house that got hit by the tree limb at the range for the last few weeks. We were able to repair it with only a small investment in new materials. We will be aerating the practice green this week in an effort to gain one extra punch on the green we have the most trouble with. We will perform the full planned aeration for next month and then hit it again on April 11th when we do the rest of the greens.

fi

fi

fl

fi

Once we nish up with mulch, trees and drainage we will start prepping some areas for sod. We will be focusing on number 18 along the parking lot and around the practice tee with the rst load. I think everyone is ready for some warm weather to settle in and get the course turning green!

T HURSDAY N IGHT M USIC St. Patrick’s Day Celebration 2022 This year’s St. Patricks Day celebration at the Club was one to be remembered. The day was full of good fun, good food, and of course, green beer! Chef Matt Liles created beautiful, authentic Irish cuisine for the dinner specials and each one sold out by the end of the night. The bar was full of laughter as members mingled among friends, sharing snacks and great atmosphere.

Vinyl Headlights, a local rock & pop trio, performed in the Huntington Lounge and had everyone out of their seats dancing. Thank you to all who came out to eat, drink and dance the night away with us, making this St. Patrick’s day truly unforgettable.
