THE ARTS CENTER What’s Inside: A Word From Our Director

From the director’s desk:
Cyndi Wish Executive Director
Hello and happy summer to you! I was thinking about that Nat King Cole song about the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer—I mean, at least once a summer that song gets stuck in your head, right? And I was thinking about how days can very definitely be all three of those things, lazy, hazy, and crazy. Because normally, I wouldn’t think that lazy and crazy could happen at the same time— “crazy” is usually a state of heightened activity, though it is sometimes hard to qualify crazy activity as productive. So I was thinking about that song and then thinking about the text that is always on the top of the inside cover of our newsletter, “From the director’s desk”. Which made me actually look at my desk. And my desk looks crazy. Here are the first 10 things I see if I take my eyes away from my computer and view the post apocalyptic landscape in front of me: Oktoberfest sponsorship solicitations, a detailed geotechnical report from the park which I am afraid to read, gift certificate we are donating to a fundraising auction, raffle permit application from the City, a hard drive, three pairs of sunglasses, sun block lip balm, the landscaping plans for the park, a draft of a poem which will be included as part of the sculpture in the park, and the program to last year’s Manhattan Short film festival. There is also a recipe for blueberry muffins, a tiny ceramic dog, and a stretchy body sized dance sack. Maybe I would like to use this list to be able to say that work life at The Arts Center is “so very chaotic”. But it’s really not any more chaotic than work life anywhere else. I think I am just writing about this because it is interesting to take inventory of what surrounds you at any given moment and evaluate what it means to your life. In the case of the current state of my desk, life at The Arts Center is a mix of commerce, confusion, charity, structure, learning, chaos, art, and sunshine. Which is kinda how we like it. Enjoy the season!

exhibitions revolving gallery exhibitions every four to six weeks
JAMESTOWN: The Great Buffalo, Tin Can Alley & The Writer’s Block Running through July 30, 2016 The photographic documentary exhibit of Jamestown by Mark Strand continues to draw a crowd. Visitors will see over 70 large-scale color photographs featuring Jamestown’s historic architecture, surrounding neighborhoods, and the James River Valley. The photographs were taken by Strand during the past five years and were inspired by the writing of local authors, Bruce Berg (Writer’s Block), Tom Elhard (Musings from Tin Can Alley) and Gordon Webber (The Great Buffalo Hotel). Artwork from Strand’s personal collection will enhance the exhibition, including sculpture by Elmer Petersen (the creator of the Giant Buffalo). The exhibit will run through the end of the month.
Gallery Lunch July 20: You are guaranteed to learn something you never knew about Jamestown. Bring your own lunch or we will prepare one for you ($5.00). July 20: “What Ever Happened to Elmer Petersen”? with Mark Strand and Kent Horton. RSVP for lunch by Friday, July 15. Over the years, Mark Strand has been a great champion for the arts. He is an artist, a professor, and a collector. He taught at both NDSU and MSUM and is no stranger to documentary photography projects. Strand has regularly exhibited at the Rourke Art Museum in Moorhead, MN and was president of the organization from 1986-96. This is his second show at The Art Center. The first, a photo documentary on M.I.T., was in 1986.
ARCHETYPES: Portraits by Justin Stevenson August 4 – Sept. 10, 2016 During August, The Arts Center will feature the work of a Minot State University art student, Justin Stevenson. His exhibition titled “Archetypes,” is a series of largescale charcoal drawings inspired by role playing games. Stevenson explores character types commonly found in fantasy and sci-fi video games and books, reinterpreting them with a contemporary twist in four-foot by six-foot charcoal portraits. Stevenson says he enjoys “the poetic uber-drama that often accompanies fantasy” and he is inspired by games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering, and World of Warcraft, as well as Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.
Warlock, charcoal, 72”x 48”
Gallery Manager, Sally Jeppson received Stevenson’s show announcement and approached the artist to fill an unexpected gap in the exhibition schedule. “The portraits’ realism, the fact they are monochromatic and monumental, coupled with the edginess of their subject matter intrigued me immediately. I imagined what a contrast this artwork would be after the traditional still lifes of Donna Watts and the Jamestown themed show by Mark Strand. Perhaps these portraits are a bit “dark” for summer but I think they will have broad appeal to the younger generation for their subject matter and they will appeal to others for this young artist’s skill in portraiture.” Stevenson is pursuing his BA at Minot State University, has completed a graphic design internship at iWerx Advertising in Minot, and is currently employed at Marketplace Foods. Stevenson’s work has been exhibited in Northwest Arts Center Juried Student Shows, earning a Merit Award in 2015.

a look inside
The Arts Center received a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) Team grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts. The Arts Center was the only STEAM Team grant recipient for the 2015 – 16 school year. The award continues the efforts The Arts Center and Jamestown Public Schools have undertaken over the past two years and concluded at the end of the 2016 school year. The STEAM Team grant provided professional development and support for teaching artists and educators through arts integration, technology, and innovative teaching strategies to enhance teaching practice, student achievement, and school culture. Teams are committed to teaching the whole student and nurturing both sides of the brain to enhance creativity and 21st Century thinking and learning. This year’s STEAM Team participants are Emma Mickelson, Lynette Ryan, Bonnie Tressler, Vikki Coombs, and Rebecca Engelman (NDCA) with support from Arts Center staff. The STEAM Team worked corroboratively with students at Washington and Louis L’ Amour schools and Newman Signs. The focus of this year’s project was to introduce the students to 3D spacial reasoning. The project incorporated national standards of teaching the seven elements of art and the principles of art and design. The Arts Center is part of the bigger picture. The connections through The Arts Center and its Arts After School program have a track record of success that led to support for this project. This grant has been renewed for another three year period.
This project is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
