We are so looking forward to the Summer of 2022! The Hansen Arts Park is getting a new look, thanks to the efforts of Ken and Rosemary McDougall, the park will have a new sprinkler system, sod and native flowers in the beds. We are planning to “unveil” the new park look by kicking off The Downtown Arts Market season with one of our favorites, Jessie Veeder, on July 7. We continue to hear from our members and our community that they look forward to Thursday nights in the Hansen Arts Park, we have reached out to our supporters and have scheduled a great lineup for our Downtown Arts Market season. As you can see on page 10, we are bringing back some regional artists, but we also have a slate of local artists. We are so lucky to have such great talent in our community, we want to focus on their talents. As always, we are looking for artisan vendors, if you are an artist with wares to sell or know someone, please let us know, we would love to rent you space. We always have a lot going on at The Arts Center, when you are downtown; stop by and check out the gallery and say hello, we love to visit with our patrons. Hope to see you soon. We would like to acknowledge all of the gifts to The Arts Center in honor of long-time supporters and members Shirley Baenen, Don Paul and Denyse Johnson. Thank you for thinking of us. Sincerely,

A PROTEST AGAINST FORGETTING

by Jim Falck exhibiting June 9 – July 30, 2022 The Falck Collection comprises over 1,600 works of art created by the artist, architect Jim Falck over a period of 60 years, beginning in the mid-1950s until the 2010s. They were donated to NDSU by the Jim Falck estate at the time of his death in 2013, and are owned by the NDSU Development Foundation.

The majority of these pieces are Goddess, Jim Falck, acrylic on paper paintings done in acrylic on paper and range in subject matter from landscapes and still lifes to portraits. There are also a number of works on canvas, as well as nearly 120 ceramic sculptures. References to Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and Clyfford Still can be frequently spotted in Falck’s images. Jim Falck was born in Edgeley, ND on December 24, 1928, and grew up on the family farm near Buchanan, ND. After a year at Jamestown College, he transferred to North Dakota Agricultural College. He studied architecture and maintained an active role in the student community. Upon graduating in 1953, he served as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force, after which he embarked on an architectural career. By 1963, he returned to Denver, where he worked for Victor Hornbein, one of America’s most significant and influential architects of the mid-twentieth century. When Jim retired in 1988, he moved to Beverly, MA, where he enrolled at Montserrat College of Art with a fine arts concentration. During this period of intense study, the style of his work evolved into a resolute dedication to abstract, figurative and landscape modernist aesthetics. Finding inspiration beyond the United States, Jim traveled throughout Europe and Mexico, painting in residency programs in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and San Miguel, Mexico. In Portugal he was the first artist-in-residence at Fundação da Casa Mateus, and in Spain he was offered studio space in Gallifa by the Artigas Foundation, where Picasso and Miró had also done residencies. These exhibitions were sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the last 25 years of his life, Jim would return to these places to find inspiration in the landscapes and people. Jim’s paintings capture and celebrate the excitement of encountering new places and people. His exposure to the beauty of the landscapes and vibrant cultures of these places inspired Jim to return time and again through memory and travel. Because of his love of Viterbo, Italy, Jim sponsored one NDSU student every year for a decade to attend a summer study abroad program in Viterbo. With his death on October 5, 2013, he left behind an indelible mark on the architectural world of Boston and a deeply felt impact in the visual arts. In the relatively short period after his retirement, he completed an impressive body of paintings that numbers in the thousands, the majority of which were donated to NDSU.

For the 2020 show 2,074 photos from 157 photographers were submitted for consideration, nearly doubling the amount from last years submissions. Seven of the photographers exhibiting work are being recognized for the first time in this contest. “We recognize talented photographers who captured the essence of what makes North Dakota a great place to visit, live, work and raise a family,” Gov. This is a tool we use to learn about the people who attend arts and cultural events, performances, exhibits and similar venues in Jamestown. The data collected will allow you and The Arts Center to tell Jamestown’s cultural tourism story and provide a powerful narrative on how the arts impacts our community and economy. KEEP AN EYE OUT for signs encouraging you to participate, and PLEASE DO! We promise it is painless and takes little time.

a look inside You may notice there is some work going into the Hansen Arts Park this spring ahead of our Downtown Arts Market kickoff in July. Thanks to the generosity of the McDougall family and Pheasants Forever and other local financial supporters like the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club and Jamestown Community Foundation—to name a few—and several individuals. We will soon have an irrigation system installed, freshly laid sod as well as native North Dakota flowers for all to enjoy. Dr. Ken McDougall along with (and as part of ) Pheasants Forever were very passionate about planting several native flower varieties for educational purposes as well as providing for pollinators. These plants have also proven to thrive in our climate and send their roots down deep to endure the harsh weather we often experience. Some of these include: Purple Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Wild Prairie Rose (pictured below), Native Pasque Flower, Dotted Blazing Star and Milkweed plants. Dr. McDougall was a member of The Arts Center board of directors for eight years and was President of the board when the decision to purchase the property was made. “Seeing this project grow and provide so much for our community is heartwarming, fulfilling and a source of pride both personally and for Jamestown.” ~Dr. Ken McDougall We hope the community appreciates and enjoys the updates to The Hansen Arts Park. And please remember that projects like this are only possible because of community support. Thank you to those that have contributed in the past to bring this park to fruition and those that are now contributing to it thriving. And thank you for your patience as we finish the work this Spring. “The Hansen Arts Park is a feature of Jamestown. Akin to the Buffalo on the hill. My wife, Rosemary, while weeding the garden beds last summer had conversation with so many people passing through or just staying the night in Jamestown that were enjoying the park. It {the park} just takes Downtown up a notch.” ~Dr. Ken McDougall

take note THE 2022 MINI-ART HUNT:

Love the parks, get a bear hug! A Jamestown annual favorite. Bringing art to the people, and people to the parks. THE HUNT BEGINS: Saturday, July 23 and ends when all twelve art works are found! You can find clues on The Arts Center’s Facebook page. The Mini-Art Hunt is an annual favorite in Jamestown. Twelve unique mini-artworks by artists Cindi Psychos, Mary Eagleson and fellow members of our local Woodchippers Club will be hiding throughout the Jamestown parks and Historic Sites (don’t forget about the little know parks around town). Can you find them? These hand-carved wooden bears are awaiting a hug. The bears were carved with donated Bass wood from Bernie Duven.

CLUES: Three Sets of Visual Clues (photos) to each artwork’s hiding place will be made public on Saturday, July 23rd at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. The first clues will be the most challenging with the final clues being the most revealing. ARTWORK HUNTING: All artwork will be hidden in PLAIN SIGHT—You will not have to move, dig, or otherwise damage anything. Visual clues to the artwork hiding places will be posted on our Facebook page. FOUND: Finders keepers! This original piece of miniature artwork is yours to keep. Be sure to REPORT YOUR FIND. No one wants to be hunting for a piece that has already been found. Post a photo of yourself and your found treasure to our Facebook or Instagram page. Or contact the Arts Center office (701-251-2496 or you can email info@jamestownarts.com) to report your find.
