Fire department requesting funds for additional manpower is help staff our outlying
By JANE WHITEHORNE stations that currently only Staff Writer have one person on duty When there’s trouble, nothing is more reassuring than the arrival of firefighters. Most often the local firefighter is first on the scene in an emergency. Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department is proud to answer those calls and serve its community. Now it needs a helping hand. PSFD wants to hire 12 full-time career staff to ease its manpower shortage. However, those additional people come with a hefty price tag of $500,000. Department officials have been in discussion with Guilford County and the Town of Jamestown about the need for money to meet this goal. They want those in the community to understand in order to continue the level of service people have come to expect from PSFD, and to maintain the safety of its firefighters, the additional funding is very necessary. “What those 12 additional firefighters will do
24-7,” said PSFD Chief Steve Allred. “The real reason we are pushing this is for safety, for the safety of those firefighters out there by themselves at those stations, and for the safety of the citizens.” PSFD operates five stations in the 52-square-mile area of Guilford County that it covers. Only one person per shift mans three of those stations – Jamestown, Vickrey Chapel Road and Coltrane Mill Road. Fortunately, there is an additional person on duty from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, when that person leaves at day’s end, one firefighter is left to respond to calls in that vicinity. Allred said normally a duty officer at PSFD headquarters on Bishop Road would respond to assist the firefighter from the oneman stations. However, that takes time and, in an emergency, time is precious. “The number of calls we
are getting is increasing and we are low on staff,” said Allred. “We’re putting those firefighters out there by themselves for longer than we’d like. Back in the day, we had volunteers that would respond from their homes to supplement that manpower. But our volunteer numbers are down. Currently, we have 32 volunteers.” Although the number of fire calls has steadily declined over the years, the overall call volume has increased. Last year the department answered over 3,000 calls. Sixty percent of those were medical calls and fires, rescues and automobile accidents accounted for the remaining 40 percent. Additionally, 16 percent of the time the department responded to multiple calls at the same time. All calls are labor intensive, especially auto accidents, which involve a truck to work the incident as well as a blocking truck to keep traffic away. Allred said people are often surprised when a truck arrives with only one firefighter

Station 46 in Jamestown is one of Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department locations with only one person on duty 24-7. on board. “You always need someone watching your back, helping you carry equipment,” said Allred. “Doing CPR is much more effective with two people. Extra help on the calls is a big thing, and the safety of the firefighter is very important.”
When PSFD submits its budget to the county at the end of March, it will reflect the $500,000 for the additional personnel. They also have applied for a grant that would defray a portion of the cost. Whether the department gets its request is the question. “I know that sounds
like a lot of money,” said Allred, “but most people want the fire department to have what they need in an emergency.”

Fire department calls increased in 2015-16
Rezoning requested for homes, condos
By CAROL BROOKS Editor
The outcome of public hearings scheduled for the March 13 Planning Board could impact the landscape of Jamestown. Davis Family Enterprises, LTD, has submitted a request to rezone 413 E. Main St. from Conditional Zoning-Agriculture (CXAG) to Conditional ZoningSingle Family Residential (CZ-SFR). The owner is seeking to subdivide the approximately 15.46-acre site into five lots, averaging from 2-4 acres each for residential housing. One lot would face East Main Street, with two coming off
Captain Brandon Cobb, of Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department’s Station #46 in Jamestown, presented the yearly report at the February Jamestown Town Council Meeting. “PSFD responded to 3,014 calls last year (201516),” said Cobb. That figure reflected an increase of 55 from the previous year. Of that number, 1,742 were medical incidents, 634 were fire-related, 326 were motor vehicle accidents and 282 were service or good intent incidents. The Jamestown station is now the second-busiest station, with 724 calls in 2015-16, an increase of 47 calls. The town was in third place the previous two years. Of those calls, the 478 medical incidents greatly outnumbered any other calls, typical of most departments. Many of those calls were to Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and
Recovery Center. Fire-related incidents for Jamestown were 257, motor vehicle accidents 30 and service/good intent incidents were 46. “We’re lucky the fire number is so low,” Cobb said. “We hope to keep it that way.” Responding to calls is not the only duty of the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department. Fire prevention and education is important. The department held 138 programs in their district, attended by 9,206 children and adults. Of that number, 2,806 attended the 26 programs in Jamestown. If the Town of Jamestown is successful in purchasing the town’s original 1929 fire engine, it will be kept at Station #46 and used for programs and parades. Firefighters are continually updating their skills through training. The local station participated in a controlled burn on Oakdale Road on Feb. 18. This helps in their training as well as reduces potential fire hazards. “We plan on adding 12 career firefighter personnel in the future,” Cobb said. “This will provide a minimum of two career personnel at each PSFD station. “We are also adding Mobile Data Computers in the fire apparatus to provide up-to-date incident notes and routing instructions for safer travel and scene safety.”
The department will also need to replace the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), which will reach the end-of-life stage in 2018. The Jamestown and Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Departments merged in 2003. It currently is made up of a board of directors, fire chief and assistant, three captains, seven lieutenants, maintenance technician, 22 career firefighters, nine volunteer firefighters, 10 resident firefighters, five junior firefighters, a Ladies’ Auxiliary and other support personnel. The department operates six engines, five tankers, one heavy rescue, one fire and rescue boat and a brush truck, among other vehicles. The total operating budget for PSFD for fiscal year 2016-17 is $2.94 million, with $435,044 being supplied by the Town of Jamestown. Within town limits, the current insurance rating – which helps determine insurance rates – is a class four. The rest of the district is class five. PSFD covers approximately 52 square miles, stretching – and covering in part – Greensboro, High Point, Pleasant Garden and Randleman. It also services the Randleman Lake area. Interstate 85 accounts for most of the vehicle calls. Carol Brooks can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

During the townwide rezoning in 2009, the Riverwalk Townhomes were rezoned from Residential-8 Planned Unit Development (R-8 PUD) with restrictions to Multi-Family Residential (MFR). However, this approximately 1.53-acre portion was rezoned SFR, believing it would be taken by the NCDOT for rightof-way in construction of the Jamestown Bypass. It has since been learned
the bypass will not touch this property. Plans are to construct an eight-unit condominium building on the site. Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson will update the Board on possible updates to the Land Development Ordinance and will lead discussion of ongoing Planning Board training. The Planning Board will meet March 13 in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Crime rose slightly in Jamestown during 2016 By CAROL BROOKS Editor Lt. John Henderson of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office gave an annual report of crime in Jamestown at the Feb. 21 Town Council meeting. There were 59 Part One crimes (murder and nonnegligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny/theft and arson) reported in 2016, including 47 larcenies (up 15 percent from 2015) and nine burglaries. There were also one motor vehicle theft, one rape and one robbery. The figures indicate an increase of only two total crimes from the previous year and no aggravated assaults. “The biggest hotspot is the Dollar General where we’ve had a continuous battle with shoplifting,” Henderson said.
July was the busiest month for the department in Jamestown with nine Part One crimes committed, six of those being larcenies. Henderson noted that most of the 47 larcenies occurred primarily at Dollar General and the drug store. It also includes cars broken into. There were no aggravated assaults in 2016 in Jamestown, down from 3 the previous year, and only one robbery, up from zero in 2015. “With Dollar General, we spend a lot of time with a Shoplifting Initiative,” Henderson said. “In the past, when we had a shoplifting, we would show up and if the person’s there, as long as we could identify them with a valid driver’s license or ID card, we would write them a citation and send them on their way. Gun Stoppers Program launched to get illegal weapons off the streets The Greensboro Police Department, in partnership with the Greensboro/ Guilford Crime Stoppers program has launched a Gun Stoppers program to encourage people to report illegal weapons in the city. Police Chief Wayne Scott announced the initiative at the “Safer City” Summit on Jan. 31 as part of a citywide effort to reduce violence involving firearms. Using resources and methods popularized by Crime Stoppers, people can submit anonymous tips about firearms possessed by felons, stolen guns, firearms used in crimes and guns deemed illegal under North Carolina law. “Most of our violent
crimes include firearms,” said Scott. “Many of those firearms are illegal. Those are the weapons we want to get off the streets.” Gun Stoppers will pay a minimum of a $250 cash reward to anyone who notifies the tip line of an illegal weapon and that tip leads to an arrest and/ or confiscation of an illegal gun by the Greensboro Police Department or Guilford County Sheriff’s Department. To qualify as an illegal weapon, the firearm must either be possessed illegally and/or illegal on its face. A weapon is possessed illegally if it is in the control of a person who cannot lawfully have a firearm. Such

people can include (but are not limited to): felons, persons prohibited from possessing by a court as part of a domestic violence protective order, fugitives from justice, illegal aliens, parolees and persons dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces. Illegal firearms include:sawed-off rifles or shotguns, automatic weapons, machine guns, those with silencers, nuclear/biological/or chemical weapons, any firearm that has been altered from its original
manufactured state and stolen weapons. “The goal of this program is to reduce our violent crime by encouraging people to report illegal firearms,” explained Scott. “We have often stated that police cannot prevent or solve crimes on our own – that we need community involvement. Helping us get illegal guns off the street is one way for members of the public to help make our city safer.” Reporting illegal firearms is easy, and more importantly, callers are not asked
to give their names. Contact Crime Stoppers by calling 336-373-1000 or texting to 274637 using the key word badboyz. Tips may also be submitted on line at www. ggcrimestop.org. Tipsters will be asked to provide specific and detailed information about the location and description of the person in possession of the illegal firearm. In return, the caller will get a code number to claim a potential award. Callers should never share this number with anyone. The information about the
firearm will be provided to GPD officers or GCSO deputies who will take action to locate the weapon and its owner. The first person to report the illegal weapon which leads to an arrest and/ or confiscation of the illegal gun will be paid the cash reward. Rewards are paid once a month at a local bank. Tipsters who provide information about illegal weapons are still eligible for Crime Stoppers rewards if additional illegal activity is discovered as a result of the gun tip.

Veteran organization, church camp join to aid homeless student veterans By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer When Bob Uber learned a local church campground stood empty 50 weeks out of the year and that many veteran students at Guilford Technical Community College are homeless and sleeping in their cars, he did the only logical thing – found a way to connect the two. Uber is founder and president of Heal Our Heroes, an organization started in 2012 to aid local veterans as they transition from military life to civilians. Many of these veterans have the added challenge of making a comeback after enduring combat. A 10-year Army veteran and infantry combat officer who served in Vietnam, Uber understands the trauma that follows veterans long after they return home. Heal Our Heroes offers ways to honor these veterans, aid in their healing and provide hiring opportunities to make their return to civilian life complete. A board of directors that includes a professional
social worker and numerous volunteers runs the non-profit organization. When the High Point Community Foundation provided a grant to Heal Our Heroes to work with the 500 student vets at GTCC, Uber was shocked to find that a number of them were living in their cars. “But the idea to establish a camp for homeless student veterans began when another veteran in crisis needed a place to stay,” Uber explained. James (Vestermark, a mentor and advisor to Heal Our Heroes) suggested talking to Harold Bean, camp manager of John Wesley Camp, LLC, on Futrelle Drive in High Point about allowing the veteran to stay in one of the camp houses temporarily.” The previous summer, Vestermark had volunteered to paint the restrooms near the camp’s chapel. He was familiar with Bean and knew the campgrounds were only being used for a short time during summers to host old-time camp meetings. From the initial crisis, discussions were
held between the John Wesley Camp and Heal Our Heroes boards to coordinate the use of the campgrounds for homeless student veterans. “It is a good way to help secure the camp because it needs occupancy and help the student veterans at the same time,” Bean said. One of the buildings, which has 26 rooms, has already been designated as a dorm for the students. “Vets are used to daily discipline,” Uber said. “They will have chores here. They will be expected to clean up after themselves, assist with meals and provide cleanup in the common areas. “We hope to be able to provide scholarships for those who need it.” Heal Our Heroes board members also are seeking a retired facilities director to oversee general maintenance. “We hope it could be a retired veteran,” Uber said. “It could also be a couple.” In addition to establishing housing for the homeless student veterans, members of the board of Heal Our Heroes would like to open the auditorium of the chapel to the

The dormitory at John Wesley Camp needs general cleaning and maintenance before it can be opened to homeless student veterans before the fall semester starts at Guilford Technical Community College.
The first order of business, however, is a cleanup day on campus scheduled for March 25. It would include general beautification with some gentle landscaping of the area. Church groups, Boy Scouts and other organizations are invited to participate. “We want this to be a community outreach,” Vestermark said. “People should bring gloves, rakes and other outdoor tools. Large trash bags would also be helpful.” “We will also begin to clean out the dorm building,” Uber added. “Our goal is to have 100 volunteers. We want to partner with the entire community on this and hope the city, as well as other groups and businesses, would adopt the project on behalf of the veterans.” The Heal Our Heroes board has been delighted with the response already received. Volunteers from Habitat for Humanity and its shop, ReStore, plan to access the needs for the project. Home Depot has agreed to provide volun-
teers and resources to help with the camp renovation. Rashod Marsh of Bess Cuts in Greensboro has offered to give free haircuts to the veterans on campus and in the area transition center. In addition to goods and services, other volunteers are needed to get everything completed in time for GTCC’s fall semester. A capitol campaign also will be required to help with expenses. “From talking to others, I realize that the community wants to help reach out to these student veterans who are homeless,” Uber said. Any who would like to help with the cleanup or other aspects of the project may call Uber at 336-430-8414 or email HealOurHeroes@gmail .com. Camp’s history will add physical ministry to spiritual By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer With the cooperation of Heal Our Heroes, a non-profit organization that honors and aids veterans, John Wesley Camp LLC is embarking on a new ministry. The camp, which is located at 1904 Futrelle Drive in High Point (off Eastchester Drive), will continue its long history of hosting old time camp meetings during
approximately two weeks each summer. But it will also begin to house homeless student veterans. When four ministers from North Carolina – the Reverends J.W. Groce, A. Burgess, P.A. Rayle and C.E Williams – attended a camp meeting at Indian Springs, Ga., in the summer of 1938, they had a vision of establishing such a camp in their own state. After much prayer and forethought, five acres of land was
purchased in High Point and the first camp meeting was held there in August 1942. The original meetings were held under a 40x60-foot canvas tent, with a brush arbor type cooking and dining area. During the past 75 years, the camp has steadily grown. It now sits on seven-plus wooded acres and includes a large tabernacle, dining hall, dormitory, caretaker’s home and other cottages. As of March 1, the John
Wesley Camp board of directors is embarking on a new opportunity to not only minister spiritually to those attending camp meetings, but to minister physically to an often forgotten group as homeless student veterans move on campus. (See story, Veteran organization and church camp cooperate to aid homeless student veterans, this page.) A general cleanup of the campus and dorm will begin March 25 with the hope that 100 volun-

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Letters to the Editor Reynolds Price, small towns,
Media should call it what it is Why doesn’t the ‘’mainstream’’ media call President Trump a liar when he gets caught telling lies. I have heard the media use words and phrases like untruth, falsehood, pursing, mirage, mischaracterize, incomplete information, factually incorrect, unproven, misinformed, walking back, clarification, misrepresent, inaccurate and alternative facts. Maybe one day ‘’Big Media’’ will call Mr. Trump an untruther, or falsehooder, but for some reason they won’t call him a liar. The media needs to point out when politicians lie. The truth matters. by guest columnist D.G. Martin of extended families and stable surrounding communities. He brought home his point by saying, “That couldn’t happen if you moved every three years.” Here is what I wrote in response: Our memories are our treasures. They are who we are. Looking backwards, some of us see our parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins, longtime friends, teachers, preachers, and the places we knew them – home, church, school, stores, and fields. Those people and places of growing up define us. They are our anchors, our foundations, our roots. At least they are, if we have those memories – if we remem-
ber where we grew up. But fewer and fewer of us know where we are from. The average American moves every three years. You can’t let your roots grow too deep if you move that often. If you move every three years and live in a new neighborhood where everyone else is new, Price said, you are not going to have the same kind of memories as those who grew up in one place. Does it make a difference? I think it does. I can’t prove it, but look around at the people who are making a difference in North Carolina – the best business leaders, our best political leaders, our best teachers and writers. Don’t a disproportionate number of them come from small towns and farms? What explains their success in the development of leaders for the rest of us? Some big city snobs would say that these leaders have had to overcome their culturally deprived backgrounds. Look at the small towns, they say, and see nothing happening, backward schools, no theaters, no big libraries, no
big-time sports. Nothing there? Nothing but the stable nurturing that creates the self-defining memories that Reynolds Price talked about. North Carolina’s small towns and rural communities are the state’s “people estuaries.” Estuaries are those protected brackish waters along our coast, which, with the marshes, swamps and backwaters, are the most efficient producers of food in the state. They are a critical link in our food chain. We often think of those areas as underdeveloped swampland. But they are irreplaceable treasures where the richness and stability of life makes for one of the earth’s most productive ecosystems. Reynolds Price was right. Those nurturing memories that the small towns make possible give people a sense of who they are. People who have a sense of who they are become better equipped to lead, which may explain why small towns are so successful in producing so many North Carolina leaders. These small towns are our “people estuaries.”
Instead of drugs, try changing diet Several hospital systems in California are aiming to try food instead of drugs in a lot of cases to bring about good health. They’re doing it in a very hands-on way: Doctors or nutritionists visit local grocery stores and give tours, answering questions about healthy food and giving away samples. Also on site are free blood-pressure checks, while medical staff point out the correlation between high blood pressure and salty foods. They call the program Shop with Your Doc. If you’re not in California, there are still things you can do. Take a good look at your diet for foods you can eliminate
or swap. Veggies and berries are healthy in multiple ways (try frozen berries in a morning smoothie), and so are whole grains like brown rice, pasta and whole-wheat bread. Did you know the oil in avocados can help lower cholesterol? Carrots have beta kerotene for our eyes. Try a whopper of a protein punch with beans and rice mixed together. (Search online for “beans in diet for longevity” and you’ll see that those areas of the world with the
longest lifespans tend to have beans in their diet as a staple. Then see the MayoClinic.org website and search for “Beans and other legumes: Cooking tips” for lots of ideas.) The next time your doctor hands you a prescription slip to treat a condition, ask him if there is anything you can do with your diet that would eliminate the need for the drug. You might start by asking if he attends the annual Food as Medicine Symposium. If he says yes, he’ll know just what you’re talking about when you wonder about substituting food for drugs. If not, you’ll have an opportunity to tell him about it.
Catholic without starting an argument. I’m emotionally tired of the arguments, but I don’t know what to do. A. You are at the age where you question things: who you are, what you want to believe about a lot of things, what feelings you have toward authority (parents), how you have been brought up, what you want out of life and a lot of other things. This is natural and good, a sign of growing into maturity. However, it shouldn’t be a time for completely throwing things out the window. Are you finding religion a problem because of what it means or because it’s being pushed on you? There’s a big difference.
Most people will encourage youth to believe in God and practice a religion in the hope and belief that it makes life better for you as it did for them. Don’t fault them for that. When you are closer to adulthood you can make decisions for yourself, and if you feel persecuted you can move away from whatever causes your discomfort. “Agnostic” means “I don’t know.” It is choosing doubt as a way of life. Decide to carefully investigate what religion is all about. Ask questions of others outside of your family, do some reading, research and study. Do what it takes to reach a decision other than “I
don’t know.” That’s being mature. Don’t be angry that your parents or Godmother try to pass along the things that are important in their lives. The time will come when they will be gone and you can decide for yourself how important those things were and throw them in the rubbish if you wish. Don’t consider things to be hopeless. At 14 there is much to hope for, and to deny your parents their right to inform and raise you as they see fit will only bring about dissension, argumentation, bad feelings and sadness to you and to those who love you. Best regards, Treefrog
Religion is causing family problems by ELDER WISDOM CIRCLE Q. I’m in a Catholic family and was forced into weekly CCD classes for six years until I refused to do my confirmation. I’m now agnostic and angry toward all religion; my mom is unhappy and disappointed in me, said I’d go to hell; my best friend said I’m a disgrace to God; my family says I have to believe in something. Years ago my godmother gave me a doll, supposedly a saint, in a two-foot crib. Now Mom puts that crib in my room every night. I’m 14 and can’t be having a toy crib in my room. It just isn’t right. I want to get Mom to accept that I’m not a

MARCH 8, 2017
Being Bold For Change By ADELAIDE ELLIOTT Jamestown News Intern
This year for many people International Women’s Day, which takes place March 8, holds a particularly important place in their hearts. With the momentum from 2016’s political upsets and January’s Women’s March on Washington continuing, the day with its theme of “Be Bold For Change” promises to be one of the largest and most impactful days ever for the event. Beginning in 1908 when women marched through New York City demanding
shorter hours, better pay and voting rights, International Women’s Day has been observed yearly since 1911. Nowadays, the event aims to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women everywhere and is celebrated in more than 50 countries by millions of people. While people have been encouraged every year to use International Women’s Day to reflect on women’s achievements and make positive changes to help forward the end of gender parity, this year’s brand of change is truly an ode to the day’s original history.
Organized primarily by the same group that organized the Women’s March on Washington, “A Day Without a Woman” aims to demonstrate through an act of economic solidarity the importance of women and other marginalized groups. “A Day Without A Woman” coincides with International Women’s Day and is being called one of the most important “bold changes” people can contribute to for the day. On March 8, “A Day Without A Woman” asks anyone anywhere to take the day off from work, avoid shopping unless it’s with a local female-owned
business, and wear red, the official color of International Women’s Day. With its theme of change and economically/politically charged causes related to labor and human rights, it seems that in many ways International Women’s Day is getting back to its original roots. While the “A Day Without A Woman” movement promises to be March 8’s largest event, the day’s theme of “Be Bold For A Change” encourages everyone to make a change in any way they want. From wearing red to volunteering for the day to recogniz-
Rotary District 7690 holds Four Way Test speech contest On Feb. 25, Rotary District 7690 held its annual Four Way Test high school speech contest at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown. Police seek to raise awareness about traumatic brain injuries From March through May, you might notice a few changes in the way some Greensboro police officers look. You might see officers with streaks of green in their hair, or sporting green nail polish. Male officers might have (are you ready for this?) …beards. For three months, Chief Wayne Scott is relaxing the department’s grooming standards to raise awareness about traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The awareness campaign is in support of an officer who is currently battling a TBI after receiving a head injury during a home improvement project. “Green is the color associated with TBI,” said Chief Wayne Scott, “and
I think displaying this color will certainly cause members of the public to ask questions about it. That opens the door for us to talk about how we are supporting one of our employees who is fighting to recover from this lifechanging injury.” When asked why he is temporarily allowing beards, the Chief replied, “Beards are a very different look for our officers. I hope the facial hair will cause members of the public to become inquisitive. Then, we can talk with them about why we are growing beards to raise awareness about TBI .” The injured officer, whose name is being withheld at the request of his family, is a 19-year veteran of the Greensboro Police Department.
He was injured in mid-January of this year. After being hospitalized for more than a month, he has returned home, and is slowly improving. The special order permitting the relaxed grooming standards allows employees to: • Wear full beards with mustaches • Highlight hair green or wear green hair extensions • Wear green nail polish and/or decorative nail art On June 1, employees must revert the existing departmental directives, which requires men to have clean shaven faces with the exception of neatly-trimmed mustaches. And green hair? Definitely out the question beginning June 1.
Recycle e-waste and personal documents Are you amassing a pile of old computers and outdated cell phones at the back of your closet? Is your attic filling up with boxes of old documents and records that you no longer need? For PETE’s sake, recycle it. Guilford County residents can dispose of their household electronic waste and personal documents for free at E-Cycle 2017 on March 11 from 8 a.m. -2 p.m. Staff and officials from Guilford County and the Town of Pleasant Garden will be ready to collect discarded electronic items and documents for shredding (maximum of five boxes per vehicle) at the Pleasant Garden Town Hall, located at 4920 Alliance Church Road, Pleasant Garden. The event is open to all Guilford County residents. Business waste is not accepted.
CRIME
Guilford County Planning and Development is partnering with the Town of Pleasant Garden to offer this safe, free and environmentally sound way for residents to dispose of electronics waste. In addition, residents can securely dispose of old documents and records without compromising their personal information by having them shredded on site. By participating in E-Cycle 2017, residents keep valuable commodities and toxic materials out of landfills, ensuring they will be reused or recycled instead. Residents can drop off the following items: • Computers and peripherals (including monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards), • Televisions (including consoles, large screen and projection TVs),
• Cell phones (including chargers and cables), • Electronic toys and games, DVD players, VHS players, stereo equipment, • Any other household items with an electronic chip or a plug, or • Personal documents/ records for shredding (maximum of five boxes per vehicle). All electronic waste collected at the event will be recycled through Synergy Recycling, an R2 certified local contractor, located just north of Guilford County in Madison. This service is available yearround to county residents through a drop-off program. However, the E-Cycle 2017 collection event is designed to highlight electronic waste as both a commodity and a hazard and to assist the community in complying with the statewide landfill

way of doing it to get our officers back in service. “We’ve stopped doing that. We now make a custody arrest and do what we can do to get a bond and issue a trespass letter so they know if they merely come back on the property, we will charge them with trespassing.” Henderson added that an officer frequently stops by the Dollar General to walk through to see if everything is OK. “We believe that number of 47 will be a lot lower at the end of this year,” Henderson added.
Not only were there fewer Part One crimes, but there were also 49 fewer calls for service – 1,012 compared to 1,061 in 2015. “That 1,012 calls for service is probably only half of what they do,” said former Guilford County Sheriff’s Office Captain and current Councilmember Lawrence Straughn. “These guys do double of what you see (on the screen.)” Carol Brooks can be reached at 336841-4933 or jamestownnews@northstate. net.

Petitioner receives variance for new construction By CAROL BROOKS Editor It didn’t take Jamestown’s Board of Adjustment long to approve a public hearing variance request for 107 Knollview Court. The meeting lasted 12 and onehalf minutes. David Thompson requested the change (amounting to 3.75 feet above allowed variances) in the rear setback restriction of the town’s Land Development Ordinance. Thompson is planning to construct a home on the property, which backs up to Koonce City Lake. In his application, Thompson stated there would be an improved buffer with neighbors by moving the setback on the wedge-shaped property. The lot is bordered by a home on one side and undeveloped property on the other side of the cul-de-sac. There are eight lots on the street, three currently undeveloped. “By moving my house to the rear, it will create more space for the neighbors on either side,” Thompson said. “The zoning restrictions on the sides and back are to protect the neighbors from encroaching too much on their space.” Since the request was for a variance to the LDO, the matter went before the Board of Adjustment, rather than the Planning Board. However, as of July 2013, the Planning Board members act as the town’s Board of Adjustment. No one spoke against the variance. Hugh Cates, whose property adjoins Thompson’s, spoke in favor. “Every one of those lots is very difficult to build on – all extremely pie-shaped,” Cates said. “I think each of our neighbors came to the town and asked for a similar type of variance. They were all granted. (My wife and I) have no objection.” Planning Director said the property does not encroach on High Point’s watershed and all is within Jamestown’s jurisdiction. There was little discussion among Board members and the request was unanimously approved. The matter does not have to be approved by the Town Council. Carol Brooks can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

Zoe Auld, sixth grade winner of the American History essay contest, along with fifth grade winner, Hayden Creech, read their essays at the February meeting of the Rachel Caldwell chapter, DAR. The girls attend the Academy at Lincoln and both won for their respective grades at the district level. Auld went on to become the state winner, too. The essays were diary entries from a pretend trip to one of America’s National Parks. Auld’s parents, Judge Patrick Auld and Dixie Wells, and Creech’s mother and grandmother, Melissa and Patricia Creech, were special guests at the luncheon meeting, which was held at the Greensboro Country Club. Brenda Keys, Marilyn CottenMcMichaels and Joan Evangelista were hostesses for the meeting. The chapter has expanded the number of items they collect at each meeting and brought books for Reading Connections, Christmas toys for “Toys for Tots,” used ink cartridges for Crossnore School, toiletries for homeless women,
Celebrate “National Women’s History Month” all through March by reading books, listening to CDs or watching movies about famous women. I have been waiting for weeks to get hold of Hidden Figures. It stays checked out. After I saw the movie, I wanted to read the book even more. We just got an extra copy at JPL. Maybe I’ll snatch it before I offer it to the public. Would that be fair? Suffragette is an exciting DVD about the early days of women’s right to vote. These women were willing to suffer and lose their homes, their jobs, their families and even their lives to change the government’s mind. Hey, Boo is a DVD that explores author Harper Lee and her historic novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Why did she never publish another book? Should her book Go Set a Watchman have been published without her permission? This week includes several special days to honor women and girls. “International Women’s
Day” is today and is committed to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, challenge conscious and unconscious bias, call for gender-balanced leadership, value women and men’s contributions equally and create inclusive flexible cultures. To recognize “Girl Scout Day” on Sunday, read our local author Nancy Gotter Gates’ book Death on Disaster Day. In this murder mystery, the Girl Scouts are having a mock disaster day for training purposes when a real dead body turns up. Always suspect the spouse, of course. Or if you prefer something true and less bloody, read a biography of Juliette Lowe and her great adventure called Here Come the Girl Scouts! written by Shana Corey. Several women children’s authors celebrate birthdays this week. Find your next career at GTCC’s job fair Guilford Technical Community College will host its annual Spring Job Fair March 15 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Medlin Campus Center on GTCC’s Jamestown Campus, 601 E. Main St., Jamestown. The free event is open to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to network with more than 70 employers. The annual event has been growing steadily over the past few years and is part of GTCC’s mission to provide workforce development opportunities to Guilford County’s committed employers and job seekers. An estimated 2,000 applicants typically attend the job fair annually and the college hosts on average 100 employers. This year’s participating employers span a wide range of fields including health care, manufacturing, logistics, law, banking, welding and more. For job seekers who are new to the job fair circuit and not sure what to expect, GTCC’s career advising
center provides the following tips to land a positive first impression. • Bring plenty of resumes – Bring plenty of copies of your resume and use bullet points describing your skills and past experiences so employers can easily scan your qualifications. • Dress to impress – No matter what type of job you are applying for go above and beyond to get an employer’s attention. • Research participating companies – Review the list of participating employers and their recruiting needs at http://bit.ly/ gtccjobfair2017. • Develop a sales pitch - Prepare a 30-second pitch selling your skills relevant to the employer. • Be selective – Identify which employers you’re most interested in learning more about, locate their booths at the fair ahead of time and meet with them first. You want to use your energy on your top choices first.
• Arrive early – As the saying goes, “the early bird catches the worms,” so arrive early to the fair. Some employers may be unable to stay for the entire job fair, so don’t miss your opportunity to meet with them. • Don’t loot the booth – Don’t take too many of the employers’ promotional items. • Wear comfortable shoes – You’ll need comfortable shoes to meet with the 75 or more employers located across two floors. • Easy on the perfume/ cologne – Do not do anything to distract the employer’s attention from your skills and positive attitude. • Be positive – About 70 percent of all applicants are hired through positive networking, so do not get discouraged. Bring your positive attitude. For more information and a complete list of this year’s participating employers, visit http://bit. ly/gtccjobfair2017.

Sean Steele, left, last year’s winner of the Jamestown Middle School Soup-er Bowl Competition passes the trophy to this year’s winners, Feebe Drayton, center, and Danielle Hendren, who tied for first place. Drayton made a corn chowder and Hendren made a chicken and wild rice soup.
Good cooks, good eats Jamestown Middle School holds staff soup cooking competition “At Jamestown Middle School, we not only have the best school staff, but we also have the best cooks,” said Pamela Herndon. To prove it, Herndon served as coordinator of this year’s JMS “Soup-er Bowl” Competition. The contest was open to all JMS faculty and staff. Contestants registered to bring their specialty dishes
to school Feb. 28, which was an early release day for students. Entries included Hungarian Mushroom, Spanish Garbanzo Bean, Corn Chowder, Chicken and Rice, Chicken and Wild Rice, Corn Sausage Chowder, Vegetarian Bean and White Bean and Kale. A panel of five judges – including a counselor and
one teacher representing sixth, seventh, eighth and encore classes – sampled all the entries to determine the winning soup. At lunch, each person who participated in the meal put a dollar in the pot to get a bowl of soup. As winners, Feebe Drayton and Danielle Hendren split the pot of prize money. They were not the only winners, however. Others included everyone who got to enjoy the tasty meal of homemade goodness.

The Cat visits students on Read Across America Day
National Read Across America Day is an annual recognition of the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss. To help celebrate his 113th birthday, one of the author’s well-known story characters, The Cat in the Hat, was on hand March 2 to welcome students at Haynes-Inman Education Center as they got off the school bus that morning. The Cat also visited with pre-K students, then school-age students before departing to visit students in other schools. In between chatting with the children at Haynes-Inman, The Cat took a few minutes for one of his favorite activities – reading a book. (Photos/Norma B. Dennis)

RHS ladies’ soccer season opens as a family affair by GEORGE TAYLOR, Special to the News
The Lady Tigers of Ragsdale High School began play with two scrimmage matches on Feb. 21 and 23. A match on Feb. 27 opened the regular season schedule with a 5-1 win over non-conference rival Trinity High School. After suffering two losses to Trinity last season, the first since 2003, it is good to see the Lady Tigers roaring to life again. You might say the win was a family affair, with all the scoring by the Geiselhart family. Sports teams are in, some ways, like families. To be functional, they need to be able to work together. Teammates need to care about, have a closeness and understanding of each other. This spring at Ragsdale, this maybe especially true and hopefully a key to a successful season. Nine of the ladies forming the team will come from just four families. There are three sets of twins – one of those with an older sister also on the team. There is also a pair of sisters of different ages. We have already seen that this understanding of each other can lead to more coordinated plays. Freshman twins Ellie and Tess, along with their
junior sister, Sandra, make up the Geiselhart army. Unfortunately Ellie is recovering from an injury suffered before the start of the soccer season, so we will have to wait another week or two before this group is up to full force. Still we have already seen that Sandra and Tess are a force that opponents will have to deal with. All three have been playing for a long time, beginning at age 5, but this is the first time that the younger twins have had the opportunity to play alongside their older sister. Makayla and Chandler Reid are in their third year with the Tigers. Having had three years of high school experience, they are muchimproved players. They will be a major part of the team’s offensive and defensive action. Being the same age, they have grown-up playing together. Brooke and Kate Brendley joined the team last year. They have always played together and have been playing soccer for 11 years. As sophomores this year, they will add strength and depth to the team. The Neale family sisters – Rebecca, a senior, and Rachel, a sophomore – also will add to the Tigers’ strength. Rebecca has been with the team all four of her high school years. We

TESS, SANDRA and would expect her younger sister to follow in her steps. Until Rachel joined the team as a freshman, the girls had always played on different teams. Both began playing soccer at age 6. Soccer, as with other youth sports, is really a family sport that involves young athletes and parents alike. Some were invited to join a team by a friend. Others were lead in that direction by parents seeking fun exercise and social activities for their daughters. Several fathers of these girls have coached or assisted with their daughters’ teams at an earlier age. As they progressed from recreational soccer to traveling club teams and to Ragsdale, there have been many miles of driving, various other team activities and countless loads of laun-
ELLIE GEISELHART dry after each game. But having twins or sisters that are playing on the same team has greatly simplified the family lifestyle. In time, the girls have learned much about life itself from a fun game. It has helped them learn time management and mature emotionally by having to deal with swings from sheer excitement to sudden disappointments. They have met people from other areas and had opportunities to travel. They have bonded with teammates, to make new friends and even brought their own families closer to each other. Soccer also has helped to develop a good work ethic and leadership skills. Yes, Ragsdale soccer is a family affair, but for these four families, it really is a family affair.

GCS to allow sixth-graders to participate in middle school sports programs
Starting in the 2017-18 school year, sixth-grade students will be allowed to play on Guilford County Schools’ middle school sports teams, with the exception of football. Last year, the state board of education changed the policy, giving school districts the option of offering sixth-graders the opportunity to participate in team sports, except for football. GCS used the 2016-17 school year to analyze the potential impact of the change on teams and school budgets. “After careful consideration, we determined allowing sixth-grade students to try out for teams will allow some of our schools to become more competitive, with a minimal impact to school budget,” explains Leigh Hebbard, Athletic Director for Guilford County Schools. Eligibility requirements remain the same, and sixthgrade students will need to submit a medical examination and required concussion awareness forms before they can join a team. For more information on the change and eligibility requirements, visit www.gcsnc.com/pages/gcsnc/ Departments/Athletics/MS_and_HS_Eligibility_ Requirem.

DIVERSIONS
Picks of the week
By SAM STRUCKHOFF
STRANGE BUT TRUE By SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was award-winning American author Ann Patchett who made the following sage observation: “The question is whether or not you choose to disturb the world around you, or if you choose to let it go on as if you had never arrived.” • As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, you might want to remember that the color originally associated with the Apostle of Ireland was blue, not green. • In 1861, when a group of Unionist counties decided they didn’t want to be part of Virginia any more, West Virginia became the only state formed by breaking away from a Confederate state. That wasn’t the only attempt,
however; a group of citizens in northern Alabama and eastern Tennessee wanted to band together and form a new state that would be allied with the Union. Unfortunately for this pro-Unionist faction, plans for the would-be state of Nickajack never came to fruition. • Are you a coddiwompler? You are if you sometimes travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown destination. • At the time of its completion in 1885, the Washington Monument, at 555 feet, was the tallest building in the world. The cornerstone had been laid on July 4, 1848, but insufficient funds and other interruptions repeatedly delayed the work. When the monument finally opened
to the public in October 1888, visitors could take a 10-minute steam-powered elevator ride to the top. During the last 12 years of the 19th century, more than 1.5 million people visited. • Hibernation doesn’t always happen in cold weather; warm-weather hibernation, known as estivation, is common among some species of lizards, turtles and snails. Thought for the Day: “The radical novelty of modern science lies precisely in the rejection of the belief … that the forces which move the stars and atoms are contingent upon the preferences of the human heart.”

1. U.S. STATES: Which state’s nickname is “Land of Enchantment”? 2. MEASUREMENTS: What does the Fitzpatrick scale measure? 3. MOVIES: Who starred as the kid in the original “Karate Kid”? 4. GEOGRAPHY:
Editor’s note: DVDs reviewed in this column are available in stores the week of March 20, 2017. “Sing” (PG) – A downon-his-luck Koala (with the voice of an enthused Matthew McConaughey) tries to save his theater with a singing contest and ends up with a whole menagerie of talented critters pinning their hopes and dreams on the result. The competitors include an overworked mother of many piglets (Reese Witherspoon), sensitive teen gorilla who wants out of his dad’s gang (Taron Egerton), a swaggering mouse (Seth MacFarlane) and a hardrocking porcupine (Scarlett Johansson). Illumination Entertainment (“The Secret Life of Pets”) makes another fun, high-energy entry. You can tell you’re not in Pixar territory, so don’t worry about too much emotional depth, subtle humor snuck in for
grownups or visuals that bend your perception. It’s like jumping in at the finale for a contest show – easy entertainment with all the backstories and best bits in one package. “Miss Sloan” (R) – Elizabeth Sloan (Jessica Chastain) is a redheaded viper of a lobbyist twisting her way to the top of the D.C. pile. She’s calculating, tighter than a knot and has seemingly scraped out the majority of her personality to make room for more ambition. While she normally works for the juggernaut pro-gun lobby, a strange change has Elizabeth fighting for a guncontrol bill, and ultimately, in a congressional hearing (featuring a menacing John Lithgow) over her vicious and underhanded tactics. The movie had to make two points really stick: This is Jessica Chastain’s vehicle, and the material is so relevant that it strikes a chord despite this version of D.C. being so removed from real-
ity. Chastain has the muscle for the role, but the role doesn’t support her in return: Sloan looks more like a stock miserable-greedy-meanboss-lady character than a complex and flawed protagonist. “Assassin’s Creed” (PG13) – Making a good or even passable movie out of a video game is a challenge you just can’t win, and this one wastes A-list performers like so many quarters dumped in a broken machine. Michael Fassbender (yes, the talented guy who brings gravitas to ever-spiraling superhero series) and Marion Cotillard (yes, that one, with the Oscar, and Fassbender’s co-star in the amazing 2015 “Macbeth”) are essentially time-travelling acrobats rolled into some convoluted conspiracy for control of mankind. Even die-hard fans of the game series will tell you that the story elements are garbage, but this movie seems bent on proving that evaluation.
CONTRACT BRIDGE
Positive thinking
By STEVE BECKER
It is estimated that even the best bridge players get to their optimum contract only 90 percent of the time. This is perhaps a surprising statistic, considering that the top experts employ many sophisticated bidding devices to help guide them to the ideal contract. For a good example of how easy it is to miss the mark, take this case where a normal sequence of bids led North-South to a contract that seemed certain to fail. Three notrump was laydown, but was not easy to reach. However, good play allowed declarer to get home safely. Faced with four probable losers – two hearts and two diamonds – he managed to make one of them disappear by converting his seemingly useless jack of clubs into a trick. After winning West’s queen of hearts with dummy’s ace, declarer immediately led the club three toward his jack! East put up the queen and played the king and another heart to West’s ten. West shifted to the queen of diamonds, but South was now firmly in the driver’s seat. He took the diamond with the ace, cashed the
A-Q of spades and club jack, and crossed to dummy’s ten of spades. He then discarded his two losing diamonds on the A-K of clubs to finish with 10 tricks. It is true that South lost a club trick he did not have to lose, but in so doing, he avoided losing two dia-
mond tricks. He realized from the start that his only real chance for the contract was to score three club tricks instead of two, and all his moves were made with that goal in mind. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Elgin watches
Q: I have two pocket watches, both made by Elgin. I would like to sell them but have no idea of what they’re worth. – Betty, via e-mail A: I recommend that you do a little homework before you make a decision. You can access a great deal of information at elginwatches.org. This easy to use website features a database that includes a comprehensive history of the Elgin Company and its products, technical help and additional links that will connect you to established dealers and collectors. You
also should check values listed at www.watchpricing.com. Remember, values are just a guide and nothing more. For example, if one of your watches is listed at being worth $200 but you can sell it for only $150, the true value is the lower figure, since an item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it in cold cash.

Q: I have an American Button Hole Sewing Machine, model No. 7. I bought it at a public sale several years ago. The machine is intact and still has its original box cover and attachments. I seem to be the only person who owns this particular machine and wonder if you can tell me more about it. – Barbara, Denver, Penn. A: According to Antique American Sewing Machines, a value guide by James W. Slaten, your machine was made between 1867 and 1877 and is valued at about $550. Since my copy of this guide is a number of years, I suspect it might be worth slightly more.
