FOREWORD Welcome to LaBatte Simmentals 41st Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale, Friday, March 5th, 2021 at Johnstone Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw on #1 highway. We would again like to thank all the bidders and buyers from our past sale. Your continued support is much appreciated. As I write this foreword mid-January, we are just getting started calving, the weather has been warmer than normal but with much more wind than I’ve ever seen. We’ve just had the worst wind storm in the winter pass through southern Saskatchewan, doing millions of dollars of damage. We had quite a bit of damage but not nearly as much as some. Mother Nature can be not nice at times. It’s been quite the times since our 2020 bull sale with Covid 19 taking on the world. It has changed the lives of many and changed how people do business. We’re so lucky to be in Agriculture as it hasn’t affected us like some other industries. Lucky to live where we do, in the wide open spaces, doing what we normally do every day. Cattle prices remain fairly strong with those big Simmental cross calves bringing lots of dollars per head, replacement Simmental heifers topping the bred heifer sales, and record prices for some of the grain commodities these past months. We need to forge ahead and be thankful for what we’ve got. I think the world appreciates a little more now the agriculture industry that produces food for the world. We welcome again as guest consignors East Poplar Simmentals, Kyron & Kelsey Manske. This young couple are doing a great job with their program. They’re a pleasure to work with and are just really good people. They will be offering about 20 red and black bulls of high quality in our 2021 sale. In our own offering this year, in the black division, we will be selling the first sons off the $92,000 IPU Bentley 81F bull that was our high seller in our 2019 bull sale, selling to Jay Dawn Farms, AB. We kept some “in herd” use semen on him and are very glad we did as his sons and daughters are outstanding. Also featured in the black division are sons off of 81F’s sire, Wheatland Bentley 630D. They are, again, very good. In the red division the first sons of WLB Encore 443F, the high selling bull at WLB 2019 bull sale, will be offered. He is a dark red son of the mighty Blockbuster bull. Encore sons are dark red, have lots of performance, hair and style. Also some of the highlight red bulls are sired by SVS Betts 808F, a Champion show bull that really adds thickness and performance to his progeny. In the offering there will be a few calving ease bulls sired by Black Gold Approval and IPU Dillinger 80B. The Fullblood division is headed up by our homozygous polled bull, Sunny Valley Canon 86E, who we jointly own with Hoegl Livestock. His sons are polled, stylish and good. And, again, there will be some really good Black Gold Elevation sons that are cherry red and full of meat. The heifer division will be headed up by daughters of Bentley 630D, IPU Bentley 81F, Liner 56U, Betts, Brooks and Encore. A really good group of high quality heifers sired by prominent herd sires. And as a special lot this year we will be selling six embryos from the great IPU 52N Ms Pocahontas 2Y cow. Three embryos by R Plus Yuma 9087G and three embryos by SVS Betts 808F. We feel this is a real sale feature. Again, we invite you to our 2021 Annual Bull & Female Sale, March 5th at Johnstone’s. The sale will be a live auction, same as usual. We encourage you to come look at the bulls prior to the sale at the farm or a day or two before the actual sale at Johnstone’s. The bulls will be there for viewing Wednesday and Thursday before Friday’s sale. If you don’t feel comfortable coming to the sale it will be carried on the internet through DLMS. P.S. The grandkids are all doing well. Going to school, wearing masks, full of energy and healthy. There is essentially no sports this year so they’re out on their ponds by their yards skating and making their own fun. The LaBatte boys have a new puppy so she is keeping them busy.

Health All bulls will be scrotal measured and palpated. Bulls over 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested. Bulls under 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested prior to delivery. Weights will be posted sale day. All bulls and heifers were given Cattlemaster 4, Somnustar PH and Fortress 7 in June and boostered with same in September. In-Herd Semen

LaBatte Simmentals & East Poplar Simmentals reserve the right to collect semen on any bull sold through this sale. The semen collection will be at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience. Any semen collected will be for in herd use only.

Delivery At the buyer’s option and risk, LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals will take purchaser’s bulls home, feed them under their management and deliver them FREE anywhere in the prairie provinces to your nearest central location. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery will take place between April and the middle of May. For bull buyers outside the prairie provinces, bulls will be delivered at a reasonable charge. The bulls are the property of the buyer as soon as they are sold. Therefore, buyers must insure their animals for the time they are at LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals. The heifers will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale. US Delivery Also for our U.S. buyers that live in the Dakota’s and Montana, we offer free delivery to central points and if possible right to your yard. We look after and pay for all paperwork crossing the border and do offer a sight unseen purchase program.

HOMO POLLED. We’re going to start off this year’s bull sale with a couple of calving ease prospects. This Approval 7H bull is dark red, moderate, stylish, very smooth made through that front end and has a great hair coat. His mother is a beautiful made, great uddered female from Ultra Livestock’s Keepsake cow family. He has an 80 lb birth weight, was born unassisted and, with his smoothness throughout his length of body, we think he could be the calving ease bull you’re looking for.

HOMO POLLED. This is a really impressive Approval son. He has always been one of our favorites. He’s dark red, moderate, stout, has lots of rib and middle, big testicles and a great disposition. He’s out of a first calf heifer who happens to be a direct daughter of Pocahontas 68M. We have four Captain Screams out of 68M and they are going to be producers like their mother. This bull had a short gestation of 278 days, an 86 lb birth weight and is the spitting image of this sire. He had an actual weaning weight of 910 lbs, out of a first calf heifer that’s pretty good. Lots of potential in this Approval son with his pedigree, structure and balance.

They are very similar in type; thick, deep, moderate, have big testicles and are full of muscle.

Her first calf, Pocahontas 15F, sold in the 2019 Simmsational sale, our high selling bred at $28,000 to Mader Ranches, Wilson Stock Farm and Bohrson Marketing. Her next calf sold in last year’s bull sale, an IPU Lieutenant son, to RSF Simmentals, a great commercial operation at Turtleford, for $16,000. And now this good WLB Encore son. 35H has good frame, is deep and loose made, has good muscle, is long and good haired. He’ll raise the right kind whether males or females.

HOMO POLLED. Another feature bull this time sired by WLB Encore. He’s very stylish, long and thick made with a great hair coat. He has that herd bull look about him too. His mother is a very good IPU Specialist daughter that raised one of the high selling bulls in our 2019 bull sale, a Brooks son, selling to one of the prominent commercial operations in the province, Diamond K Cattle Co. at Maple Creek. They have one of the most successful bred heifer sales in the country. Every year in December they have their Rock Solid Bred Heifer Sale. Diamond K sell about 165 bred heifers in it, reds and red baldies, many of these heifers are sired by LaBatte Simmental bulls. If you’re looking for top quality heifers it’s a must attend sale. We think Encore 52H is a bull with a lot of future in him. Whether breeding purebreds or good commercial cows, he will get the job done.

You don’t see many bulls with the quarter that he possesses. His mother is an excellent Muirheads Broker 221Z daughter out of the Lotto 72A cow that produced the $30,000 Priority daughter that sold in last year’s sale to KT Ranches. As a bonus, he has a partial white blaze on his head, he’s homo polled and homo good. What a set of calves he would sire.

Well, every once in a while you get lucky and that’s what happened when we found we still had a couple of Springcreek Lotto – NUG Pashmenia embryos in the tank and we put them in the spring of 2019. And wow! We got the Lotto 148H bull calf who is one of the feature bull calves in our sale this year. He’s a full brother to the Red Lotto bull that Westway Farms purchased in our 2014 bull sale and that has done such a great job for them with many, many progeny registered off him. The NUG Pashmenia 403P cow that we purchased from Maxwell Simmentals as a bred heifer has done great things for us. She was a black baldy cow that produced many outstanding progeny. This excellent, deep, soggy, heavy muscled, red Lotto son is somewhat of an outcross in the red Simmental world. There’s never been many red Lotto’s and 148H going back to a Black Joker cow for a mother is a bonus. There’s lots of opportunity in this calf, it will be interesting to see who his new owner is.

The reason being that if they carry the diluter gene and you breed black cows to them you could get a small percentage of greys or rat tails. If they are non diluters bred to black cows you’ll get mostly blacks and some reds and, hopefully, some baldies with the Fullbloods. If your cows are all black Angus you should get mostly all black or black baldies. We just want to be upfront with you so there are no surprises when buying these Fullblood bulls. There’s no problem with the red cows as they will be red or red baldies. All our Fullblood bulls tested non diluter. Now for 24H, he is sired by a Sunville Copper son we purchased out of the Schweitzer dispersal in the fall of 2019. He was the high selling fullblood bull and his mother the high selling Fullblood cow, both full Fleckvieh. The Connor bull really calved easy for us and I think could have been used on heifers. POLLED. NON DILUTER. This polled Elevation son we are really high on. Not the best picture in the world but when you see him in the flesh you’ll be impressed. You get behind him and he’s big topped and has lots of muscle and shape. He’s deep and soggy, smooth polled and dark cherry red. His mother is a good uddered Rocket daughter who just had a full sister to 64H on January 20th. Another good looking calf. We think this bull has a lot of opportunity ahead of him. We will probably collect some semen on him for in herd use for ourselves. Jason sold the U.S. semen rights on him and several semen packs in Canada and has since sold semen packages through various sales and has the cost of the bull paid for. There’s been some really outstanding progeny sell this past fall at various sales and they have sold very well. Welcome to the LaBatte Simmentals Bull & Female Sale with East Poplar Simmentals! It is crazy to believe that a year has gone and we are at bull sale time again! Last year we were fortunate the bull sale was early and right before the COVID restrictions began and life as we knew it was changed. For 2021 we are planning to continue with a live sale and business as usual with the option to view and bid online through DLMS. We also have an extensive list of professional sale consultants listed at the beginning of the catalogue that can be of service if you are not able to make the sale. Or give Kyron or Barry a call for assistance and questions. Things on the farm and with our family have been as busy as ever! Our little girl, Embrie, is 2 ½ years old and keeps us on our toes with her independent and sweet personality. In June Kelsey became the Community Development Officer for Coronach and in November Kyron became an RM Councillor. We are once again excited about the pen of bulls we have on offer in the sale. A new sire group this year is the SVS Betts bulls and boy are we excited about them! The consistency and quality of the Betts calves, whether it’s bulls or females, is like no other bull we’ve ever used. We also have a great group of Lieutenant bulls this year and they continue to impress us. We have some Lieutenant daughters milking now and they have beautiful udders and are turning into real impressive females. On the black side of the pen we also have a new sire group, the East Poplar Payload group. Payload was our high selling bull in the 2019 sale, selling to Townview Simmentals at Shaunovan. He has really established himself as a true performance bull, adding stretch and frame to his calves. The rest of the blacks are mainly out of bulls we have more experience with, Capacity and Captain Black. We have used these bulls for a couple of years now and feel they have a lot of maternal value to add as well and extra performance. We feed these bulls to work for you for the long term. We are in the breeding business, not the feeding business. We want these bulls to thrive under ideal conditions, not require ideal conditions. After a two stage weaning process, the bulls are sent back out onto swath grazing for as long as possible. We really like the exercise the bulls get when doing this and feel it really helps transition and grow them before coming in on feed. We feed free choice hay, oats, and a protein supplement which is made up of pellets and corn. We don’t feed our bulls any barley in their ration as we want to ensure we don’t run into any feet issues in the future. I refuse to trim feet on a yearling bull and we guarantee these bulls will never have their feet touched so what you see is what you get. It’s very important to us to be upfront and honest about how these bulls are raised and displayed and we enjoy talking about our program with anyone who may have any more questions. All the bulls are on our herd health program and will be semen tested and guaranteed. Delivery is free of charge, but we do ask that any bulls that come back to our place for wintering are insured. Most of the bulls in our offering have been homo polled and homo black tested. Visitors are always welcome and the bulls are available to be viewed on the farm at any time or give us a call to discuss any of our offering. Everyone has those calves that are the standouts at a young age, but this guy was in a league of his own! I have never seen a calf with as much mass at such a young age as 21H. It has really been exciting to watch him develop and turn into the impressive individual he is today. When you get behind him you will be blown away by his wide hip and how he carries that through his loin and right across his top. He’s big middled, bold ribbed and ties this nicely into his shoulder. Here is a special offering of IPU 52N Ms Pocahontas 2Y embryos sired by two of the most talked about Simmental bulls in the breed, R Plus Yuma 9087G and SVS Betts 808F. Yuma is the $150,000 high selling bull at the R Plus bull sale in 2020. He was one of the most talked about black bulls to sell this past spring. There were many syndicates put together to go after him. It was exciting for ourselves and Circle 7 Ranches, the Oberles, to be winning bidder. The next day we sold 50% semen interest in him to reputation breeders Rancier Farms and Maxwell Simmentals. He’s homo polled and hetero black and as we write this footnote we have Yuma calves on the ground. They’re coming easy, have short gestations and look very sharp AND we have some red ones. What can we say about SVS Betts 808F, his first calf crop is outstanding, there’s no other bull that puts muscle and rib in his progeny like he does. He’s a champion show bull and a champion sire of many great progeny whether males or females. And now on to Pocahontas 2Y, our pick of our cows when Meadow Acres purchased a very large package of cows from us. She is sired by the legendary Springvreek Liner 56U bull and her donor dam was sired by Hart Red Chief 242J. Someone asked me the other day if I could pick a bull(s) that I used over the years, who would be my favorites. It didn’t take me long to answer Hart Red Chief and Springcreek Liner 56U. We think there’s a lot of opportunity in these two matings of the great Pocahontas cow and these young up-and-coming Simmental stars.

This heifer has been a stand out since she was a little calf. She’s out of a first calf Western Star heifer from Rendezvous Farms and sired by our black Brooks son, MI MR EXCEED 51F, a meat machine. She weaned this heifer off at 815 lbs. This 58H heifer has size, performance, shape, hair, broodiness and the looks. I just don’t know where you would change her.

We sold her Limitless bull calf in last year’s sale for $10,500 to Doug Thoms, Wild T Farms at Humboldt, SK and got three Liner 56U daughters from the embryos. We bred Blue Moon to Bentley and she raised this beautiful, stylish heifer that we’re offering.
