MOUNTAINVIEW

BULL SALE

We would like to welcome you to another edition of the Mountainview Bull Sale in Innisfail! The variety of breeds has made this a convenience friendly stop along the bull sale trail for many and this year we see three breeds involved, including both colours of Angus.

Saturday, 1:00 p.m.

MARCH 24, 2018

Cutbank Cattle Co from Three Hills has a program that I admire for their willingness to work hard at finding outcross genetics. Virtually anyone can buy Cutbank bulls and not have to worry about them being related to their own replacements. General do-ability and soundness are huge breeding principles at Cutbank and this would explain the good repeat customer base they have. The Cutbank bulls have worked well for producers and we encourage you to try one or more if you haven’t.

Innisfail Auction Mart, Innisfail, AB

Offering 55 Bulls 19 Red Angus Bulls 3 two year olds

16 yearlings

Chestermere Polled Herefords have been in the business for decades and decades. The test of time is your advantage and my yearly visit in the Chestermere bull pen always impresses me by the sheer growth of these February and March born bulls. Loads of cow family power here combined with well thought out walking bull and A.I. sires make this product what it is. Ross Bricker is a true gentleman to deal with that will earn your respect in a low pressure, no-nonsense way.

10 yearling Black Angus Bulls 17 Polled Hereford Bulls 6 two year olds

11 yearlings

9 yearling Galloway Bulls

We would like to welcome Dersta Farms to this year’s Mountainview. We are excited to have this eager young family join us with their solid product. The bulls they have are thick, big middled and sound. They have payweight written all over them. Not a surprise after seeing the the two top end heifer calves they consigned to the mighty Red Roundup last fall - same stamp!

Welcome back Chickadee Farm to Mountainview! Jim King is one of the most respected Canadian Red Angus breeders ever and has spun a new twist at us with this string of Black Angus and Galloway bulls! The thing that will be the same is the Chickadee breeding philosophy: they need to calve, grow and milk. Jim’s daughter, Meghan is the driving force and with her father’s valuable tutoring, the future is bright at Chickadee. The good people at Tri R Way come “in tow” with the Chickadee string and add to the quality of our Black Angus and Galloway sections.

36308 RR13, Red Deer County, AB T4G 0M9 403 877 0479 (Derek) 403 506 1473 (Stacey) derstafarm@gmail.com We would like to welcome you to the Annual Mountainview Bull Sale. This is our first year to consign and we were excited when Jay and Cody approached us at the end of October. We operate our mixed operation of both grain and cattle, DERSTA Farm Ltd., west of Innisfail with our 3 children, Erika (9) Lexie (6) and Logan (2). When we are not busy on the farm or with the kids we are involved in our local curling clubs and we support surrounding curling clubs and their bonspiels. Our kids have just started the 4H program in which they are working on both calf projects and equine projects. In the summer, between pasture checks and haying, we enjoy heading out west with friends and family for camping. We started our Purebred herd with 3 cows purchased from the ever so popular Chickadee Farm (Jim King) dispersal in 2010. Since then we have slowly been adding a handful of QUALITY females from dispersals and female sales all over Western Canada. We have purchased most of them from the famous Red Round Up show and sale held every October. We have previously sold our bulls by private treaty to a handful of repeat customers. We are currently calving 60 cows. We use a heavy influence of artificial insemination to utilize the best genetics available. We also buy bulls that have all the qualities we look for in our cows, with temperament and feet being #1. We have a very tight 60 day calving on our cowherd and nobody gets a second chance. We feel this helps tremendously to keep the fertility and stay-ability high in the herd. We have a number of cows that are over the 10 year mark that calve in the first cycle. These are the keepers. Our first calvers and second calvers are all treated the same as the mature cows. No special treatment and no extra grain. They have to keep up to stay here. The mineral is carefully balanced and custom made to match our feed each year, all year round by Blue Rock Mineral. Cows are on a full herd health program (Alberta Veterinary Center, Dr. Rick Katchuik) where every year they receive the pre-breeding vaccines of Bovishield Gold, 8way and De-wormer one month prior to breeding. They ALL, not just the heifers, receive the ScourGuard vaccine 4 weeks prior to calving. The calves receive the Bovishield vaccine and 8way prior to going to pasture and again when they are weaned. The bulls were weaned on Sept. 2, 2017. They are started slow and fed free choice grass hay along with a prepared balanced grain ration at 2% of body weight from Healthy Herds in Bentley. The bulls are pail fed twice per day. They are all quiet, easy to handle bulls. All the bulls will be vaccinated with the foot rot vaccine and we will ensure they receive their booster before sale day. If there is anything that goes wrong or you are not satisfied with your purchase, WE want to be the FIRST to know about it so we can do our best to rectify it. All bulls sell with transfer, passed semen test, and are fully guaranteed under the Canadian Angus Association Breeder’s Guarantee. Feel free to stop by to have a look at the bulls and their dams/sires or give us a phone call before the sale. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our previous customers. Your confidence in our program is greatly appreciated. We love to hear the good and the bad. K.T. He hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped with an ADG of 3.45lb. He’s easy fleshing and has lots of hair. He has a maternal brother working in the heifer pen at 4Wal Ranch in Southern Alberta. His dam, 326R, was one of our original Purebreds from Jim King’s dispersal in 2010 and has blown us away EVERY single year with her calves. Always one of the first picked out of the bull pen and we keep every female. At 13 years old she just had her 12th calf January 1. The sire, 302A, was the first bull we raised. His calves are vigorous at birth and his females have nice tidy udders and good feet.

He’s following in his dam’s footsteps of being wide on the top, terrific spring of rib, and enough meat and growth in the hind end to rival any. The sire of this bull, 342C, we bought out of the Red Rock Red Angus sale in Airdrie. This was one of their picks for heifer bulls and he hasn’t disappointed. This bull should make a heifer bull candidate. They have a little more frame than some, but it has not affected the calving. The dam is a daughter of our 326R cow.

Wow! Wow! Wow! 704E has impressed from the time he was born. Probably the best balanced bull we have. We took him to both Fall Classic in Olds and Red Round Up Bull futurity where he was well accepted. Both dam and granddam have milk for days with well placed teats. From this cow family we have bulls working in the K.T. Leischner Farm, Larry Robinson Ranch, and with Joe Kubinec. We have 2 females retained for our own herd. His sire, 302A, is a cornerstone to our herd. His dam we bought at the Red Round Up sale from Elmer Weibe of Saskatchewan. His calves have style, hair, and an unbeatable temperament. One of the few bulls you can load from the field without handling facilities.

HEIFER! HEIFER! HEIFER! If you’re looking for an easy calving, sleep at night, heifer bull this is your guy. He is one of the smoothest bulls you will find. If you have smaller framed heifers this is their date this spring! His dam, 503C, is one of our smaller framed cows, and she goes back again to our 326R cow. She has one of the nicest udders with nicely placed teats. The sire, 268C, has been one of our BEST to date heifer bulls. Never any questions, they shoot out running. Unfortunately we lost this bull 3 weeks prior to breeding last spring. Fortunately for us he left a few heifer calves we retained for our breeding, however we had to beat Bryan Mackenzie off with a stick not to take one for the mighty Red Round Up sale this past fall.

You get looking at pedigrees and there’s a boatload that go back to the famous Meadow Creek Miss Seaman 31A. We sold a daughter out of 673X cow (granddam) in the Red Round Up show and sale for $6000 into Wawota SK. Every calf in the 673X family has that thick, easy fleshing ability.

This year we are offering both Black Angus and Galloway bulls. Our Galloways sell as lots 51 - 55. Our Angus bulls are calving ease, maternal focused bulls. These bulls will produce calves that are born easy and grow. In our offering of Galloways, we are trying to promote their maternal ability and moderate frame. They are a great cross for both British and continental breeds. These bulls provide moderate birth weight with strong maternal traits.

Welcome. My philosophy on breeding cattle is vastly different than other mainstream breeders. We focus on profit not on end production. We sell cattle by the pound, but most people think only about lbs of calf off a cow not how much it costs to get those lbs. We want moderate sized cows, that raise 50% or better of their body weight, and do it into their teens. We place our cattle under limited feed inputs, to determine which genetics thrive and can handle nature’s tests and which genetics fallout under the pressure. There are no pampered, haltered, pageant queens here. We have never tried to change our polled Hereford or Angus cattle into a Simmental. When this is done they become little Simmentals and lose all their advantages over the exotic cattle. We don’t claim to feed oats and hay to our bulls like some. The difference is, until the end of Oct they are run on tough native pasture without creep feed. My bulls aren’t sissy bulls – they are rugged, they will last, and breed more cows. *Our cattle our judged by the two of the best judges – mother nature and father time. Mother nature turns the elements on them and father time tells us who survives (Trojan Polled Herefords)*

Chestermere Polled Herefords This year, we feel we have the strongest group of bulls we have offered to date. Aside from a yearling we are keeping for our own use, all our yearlings and two-year-olds are in the Mountainview Bull Sale. We are a fourth and fifth generation pedigreed Hereford operation. Consistently, our primary objective has been to raise functional, problem-free cattle that work for our commercial customers. Over the years, our herd sires have tended to be home-raised bulls from cow families we have owned for generations. We do use AI to some of the breed’s top sires as a way to add new genetics to our herd. You will note that there are several sons in the sale from these sires. We are early to try new tools that may aid us in our production practices when they become available. We have maintained and have used annual performance records in our herd for more than fifty years to its start in Alberta. Today, in addition to performance records, we utilize ultrasound and other genomics tools. Several of the bulls on offer this year have genomically-enhanced EPDs and have been tested to be homozygous polled. This year, with the drought in our area, we weaned a bit earlier than usual in mid-October. Through most of the winter, until we start calving, the bulls are reared in 5 to 10 acre fields where they can get plenty of exercise. They are grown on an oat and hay ration. As always, thank you from our family to the buyers and bidders of our bulls in the past. We appreciate your support and wish you continued success. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at: 403-815-9038 Alexa and Ross
