Frank’s Vacation Home Creating a collage of various images to develop one composite image that tells a story. Total time: 4 hours Software: Photoshop, Adobe PDF

11

Professor Bosworth sets out on voyages all across the world. Recently he discovered a desert oasis near ancient pyramids in Egypt. He built a hut near the water with the help of the locals and has been investigating tombs. With his vast knowledge and need for adventure, Frank will uncover the mysteries of Ancient Egypt and their connection to extraterrestrials. This is a postcard he sent to his students to let them know he found an ancient oasis civilization and he will continue to report back to us with all the things he discovers.

13

Background Images

The first background image I selected was to initiate the desert scene I wanted to portray. Professor Bosworth always seemed to be adventurous, so I decided that Egypt would be the perfect place for him to “visit”.

The second background image I chose helped me get the body of water next to the pyramids and to create a more lush and vegetative look. By overlaying the two images, I was able to blend the scenes together to recreate a “Desert Oasis”.

15

Supplementary Images

In Photoshop I was able to combine these images in order to enhance the photo and give it a little more of a narrative. The post card images were the final touch to give it a vintage look. I also overlaid a photo filter to give it the “sepia coloring.

The cabin was hidden in the vegetation and that gave me the idea that he would need a boat to cross the oasis to get to it. The palm trees helped frame the edge of the photo and give it a foreground. And the other images were used for the vegetation.

Vector Mapping From Auto CAD, a city plan of Downtown Orlando, Florida was exported into Adobe Illustrator to further edit line weights and to add extra details. Then, a few site characteristics were chosen and pointed out within the plan with the use of icons in order to develop a Site Analysis for our projects. Total time: 5 hours Software: Rhino, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PDF

Legend

Bike rental hubs Fitness centers Parks

This map shows the locations of the bicycle rental stations in relation to fitness and health clubs. Also shown is the small amount of green spaces within the heart of downtown Orlando. I think this diagram shows our need to improve on health within the urban fabric to promote health within the community 21

NURBS Modeling Creating a simple structure using 3-D modeling software, Rhino, then exporting the lines into Adobe Illustrator to create simple diagrams. Total time: 10 hours Software: Rhino, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PDF

23

Step FLOORPLATES 1: Floor Plates

DIAGRID Step 2: Diagrid

Creating floor plates by contouring the surface and giving them thickness using Rhino.

Developing a simple structural diagrid system by contouring lines in different directions.

StepGREEN 3: Green walls WALLS Applying a simple shape to the surface and giving it thickness to develop a system of “green walls across the structure.

Step 4: Combination COMBINED By combining all of the different ELEMENTS systems, a simple structure is created and diagrams are easily developed in Adobe Illustrator.

Pavilion Part I Developing vector diagrams of the Downtown Orlando Site to create a site analysis in Adobe Illustrator. Using different methods like line weight, color, and icons to point out characteristics of the site.

Total time: 6 hours Software: Rhino, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PDF

Site Analysis

Site

Traffic Patterns Traffic on Orange Avenue tends to be more dense and busy as opposed to Pine Street which does not have as much flow. Pine Street also has brick roads which slows traffic down a lot more.

Sun Path

This vacant lot gets sun most hours of the day, but in the evening the building on the west provides a shaded environment.

Sight Lines The adjacent buildings all have a great view onto the vacant lot and there is a lot of potential to design the corner to aid in the curb appeal of the lot.

Pedestrian Paths Pedestrians will use the site to cut the the corner, but at night it is poorly lit and people tend to avoid going into the site by staying on the direct path of the sidewalk.

Streetscape

Trees line the street in downtown Orlando and provide a canopy for the passersby. The trees also provide an implied boundary for the lot.

Pre-Existing Mass

This diagram shows the massing of the building that used to exist on the site.

Pavilion Part II Developing and diagramming an idea for a pavilion by using parametric modeling tools such as Rhino 5 and a Grasshopper plug in. Total time: 8 hours Software: Rhino, Grasshopper, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Point Grid

Point Grid with Point Attractor

Boxes Formed on Each Grid Point

Box Height Changes Based on Distance to Point Attractor

Initial idea/sketch

Collage of urban scales

Grasshopper Definition:

My idea is about the erosion of a buildings relationship to the human scale over time.

The grid created in grasshopper relates to the site dimensions and the point attractor is located close to the main corner of the intersection. Initially, the box shape was used to simplify the idea and to represent the grid clearly. It also allows for better organization of materiality and its transition from the urban scale down to the human scale.

The scale goes from large to small, relating to the urban scale with glass and larger materials, then it transitions into materials closer to the human scale that are generally smaller.

The idea of this assignment was to dissect the elements of the rendering output images. By having each output as an individual file, it makes it easier to mask, select, and overlay when in Photoshop.

For this night rendering, I used Material ID outputs to give me different colors for each separate material or element within the image. This is extremely helpful when there are a lot of different materials or objects you want to be able to select separately and more easily in Photoshop. 39
