or years the weather, in our neck of the woods, would change from Winter to Summer without having a Spring at all. Not this year! Cooler than normal temperatures and plenty of rain called for enjoyable golf rounds on ultra plush, rich green golf courses everywhere. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I had. Once again, this issue combines our regular Great Golf - New Jersey/New York edition with our Great Golf - Delaware Valley edition. When we combined the two editions last Fall, our readers’ responses were so popular that we decided to do it again! Readers enjoy Publisher’s Picks, where we review products and gift ideas that we have test driven and feel that you and your game would benefit from these products along with Mike Rose's The Rose Factor, a regular commentary on golf in the Delaware Valley through the eyes of one of the area’s long time great golf champions. Mike also reports on many of the local golfers and golf teams making a name for themselves, their schools, and the clubs they belong to in his regular feature, Local News. And if you’re lucky, you might see your name featured on the list of those golfers who have made a Hole-In-One! Our cover feature is a Triple Treat for Golfers. Bella Vista, Mainland and Morgan Hill are three golf courses that not only provide you with a great golf experience but will also satisfy your appetite with an extraordinary apre-golf meal whether it’s just a burger and a beer in one of their popular grilles or a fine Italian dinner at Bella Vista’s award winning restaurant, LaMassaria. We know you will enjoy every aspect of these Great Golf courses! Stop slow play and may your lies be good ones! See you on the tour!

THE
OUTING GIFTS GOLF MANAGEMENT GROUP
The following is an excerpt from “The Official Guide to Organizing and Managing a Golf Event.” One item that golfers look forward to is the event’s commemorative gift. This item is all too often looked at without much attention by the event organizers and the result can be disappointing to the golfer. Many outing organizers are not aware of the various types of quality and functional items you can get for your money that would be well received by your participants. This item is too important to not take seriously. It is an item that will market your event to other golfers. Give the players something in return for their support; something that will keep them coming back year after year; something that will continue to remind them of your great event. Give them an item that they can show to their fellow golfing buddies. Establish the right reputation from the start and players will be lining up to participate in your event year after year. The commemorative gift is usually given to the golfer at registration. It should be either silk screen imprinted, engraved, 20
By Jamie Gacos
or embroidered with your organization’s logo. Do not put a date or year on this item unless your event commemorates a special date or anniversary. Since you should plan and order more of these items to ensure everyone gets one, there is the possibility that at the end of the day you will have some left over. These can be used as door prizes at next year’s event. Also, avoid purchasing this gift from the course’s pro shop for two reasons: the gift will cost you more; and, most items from a pro shop are imprinted with their course’s logo. You should be promoting your organization, not theirs! If your event is being held at a very reputable country club, then you may want to add the club’s name and logo to your item (usually on a shirtsleeve). The course may not permit you to have their name and logo duplicated unless you purchase the items from their pro shop. This is often the case with private country clubs. Unless they specify in their contract that they do not permit you to duplicate their name and logo without their consent, then I would not be concerned.

Commemorative gifts could vary among a number of items such as bag tags, beach towels, golf balls, divot tools, valuable pouches, golf caps, umbrellas, shoe bags, golf shirts, wind shirts, leather golf shoe bags, golf bags, travel bags, watches, etc. Gifts do not necessarily have to be “golf related”. Select an item you know golfers will use. The cost could range from to $5.00 to $100.00 per item. How much you spend on the gift is directly related to how much you charge them to enter your event. The cost of this gift should be “built into” the entry fee you are charging each participant. Get the right gift and golfers will return year after year. All of the items shown here cost under $25. Contact The Golf Management Group for pricing: 908953-9852.
PROTECT YOUR EYEWEAR EYZGEAR Sunglasses are a very important component of your regular golf gear, as important as your golf shoes, golf cap, divot tool, distance measurer, clothing, and even your golf clubs! Golfers not only need to protect themselves from damaging sun rays and ticks that can cause lyme disease, but they also need to protect their eyes from damaging sun glare. Of all the golf gear you carry with you, sunglasses have the greatest potential of getting damaged from their continual use. I’m sure you’ll agree that all you need to do is drop your sunglasses one time, where they inevitably land on their lenses, and the sunglasses are shot! There’s nothing worse than wearing a pair of sunglasses with a scratch in the lens. The bottomline is that 2017 ISSUE 2
you stop wearing them and end up purchasing a new pair that can be very pricey! If you’re like me, I wear my sunglasses and park them on the top of my golf cap when I’m not using them. Sometimes I will forget that they are there and will either bend down to reach into my golf bag or take my hat off the put on a windbreaker, and before I know it, the sunglasses go flying off of my head and onto the cart path, and yep, lens side down resulting in a big scratch! Well, now there’s a fix for that: EyzGear, Armour for Eyewear. EyzGear is a unique and ingenious personal eyewear retention device. It’s an innovative design solution for securing all glasses to hats. The integrated design of EyzGear allows for any glasses to directly attach to hats and protect them from fall, loss and damage. It is made up of two clips with a retracting “fish line” that attaches to your sunglasses and keeps them “pulled back” onto your golf cap. When you want to wear your sunglasses, you then pull the sunglasses over your cap and onto your face. you have to get use to the “fish line” but it’s really a very small trade off in exchange for protecting your sunglasses. At $14.95, it’s well worth the insurance for protecting your favorite and expensive sunglasses! EyzGear offers many stock colors and a trendsetting design collection to personalize EyzGear. The highly visible display area of EyzGear makes it a perfect accessory for customization to imprint any company’s logo or message, perfect for your golf outing! Available at eyzgear.com.

The Luck of The Rose Factor 40 Years and Counting My wife and I were out at Talamore last week, playing one of our regular late Saturday afternoon “9 & Dines”. As “luck” would have it, a nice young man joined us, a scratch handicap Episcopal Academy sophomore, 6 foot 4 and hit it a mile. From the back tees, his 5-wood flew 50 yards past my 235 yard “bomb” from the white tees. Over the course of the nine, we both shot comparable 38’s, but more important, talked lots of golf – the mental game, course management, upcoming events, his future, my past. It seemed to him that I must have been a pretty good stick, maybe with a little left in the tank. It got me to thinking about the past, all the tournaments played, all the great courses I’ve seen, all the great players I’ve met, some of whom, I actually beat. Maybe I did have some skill, but certainly plenty of luck too, the luck of what has become fairly well known locally, nationally and internationally as, THE ROSE FACTOR. It started back in 1976 at the qualifying round of the Philly Amateur at Phila. Cricket Club. In the 7 years since I had graduated from Indiana U., I had tried to play some area tournaments, never did very well. But this year, luck turned things around. After shooting a 74 in the morning round, I shot 39 on the first nine of the PM round, I was fading fast, looked like I’d blow my chance to qualify for the match play. As I was ready to tee it up on #10, the skies opened up. It poured for the rest of the day, and play was called, 27-hole scores would count. I qualified in the top 10, my first ever Philly Am, thank you very much. The next year, the Philly Am came to Manufacturers G & CC, a great Flynn design. I had played fairly well the month before at the Patterson Cup at Gulph Mills, finishing 3rd with 73-75. My confidence was on the rise. I shot a par 71 in the morning round at “Mannies”, 24

then headed over to North Hills for the PM round. I played well through 17 holes, plus 3, a lock to make match play, and also would qualify for the Philly Open, a bonus. On #18, I butchered my drive, clanked it off a few trees, hit it into the bunker and got it up and down for a double –bogey 6, to shoot 76, which turned out to be medalist for the AM, low qualifier for the Open, and I also won something called the Silver Cross, never heard of it. It turned out that the Silver Cross was a top prize in GAP, for the player with the low total score in the Am Qualifier and the Patterson Cup. Congratulations abounded from all the players, they didn’t know it was really just dumb luck, or the luck of THE ROSE FACTOR. It was during that round at North Hills that the FACTOR was named. On the par 3 11th hole, my playing partner Biff Keidel, a Mannies member and a strong favorite in the tournament, was struggling badly, his chances to qualify fading. He hit a very poor 7iron, pulled dead left, way off line. I yelled “hit the tree”, and it did, kicking the ball 20 yards toward the pin, where it ended up 6 inches away for a tap in birdie. Biff then rallied to make the cut by a shot, and made it all the way to the semi- finals, where he got nipped by eventual AM winner Chip Lutz. I lost in the quarters, but I had my Silver Cross and my name in the record books alongside legends Jay Sigel, Bill Hyndman, J Wood Platt and many more much better than I. More important, the FACTOR was truly born, 40 years ago this month. The FACTOR has always included calling for my shots to bank off trees, hit the ground and bounce one way or the other, skip through bunkers or over the water, one of my favorites. Players marvel how often it works. Just ask former AM Champ Chuck Dowds, who was with me at the Patterson Cup at North Hills when I hit a horrible fat 4iron on the 9th hole, heading toward the left bunker, when I yelled, ‘hit a rock”, and indeed I think it actually did, then kicked dead right and rolled into the cup for a HOLE-IN-ONE!! Over 40 years and the FACTOR remains alive today, but in most cases, it’s working for my playing companions much more than myself. I’ve used up more than my fair share, no complaints. I’ve still got a busy tournament schedule ahead for this year, in the Super Senior division, where all the players who beat me when I was 20, 30, 50 etc, are stilling beating up on me today. I just hope for the rare day when the FACTOR rises up and gives me the right bounce at the right time, maybe one more win. As I tell all the boys, “Give luck a chance, it’s called THE ROSE FACTOR”. 2017 ISSUE 2

Reported by Mike Rose
Rising Star A new golf star is rising in Delaware Valley golf and he’s 26-year old Ben Feld. He’s quietly been making a name for himself in Golf Association of Philadelphia events since graduating from Drexel U. Ben made it to the semifinal matches in the GAP AM in 2012 and 2014 and has played well in many other events. But the lid is off the jar now as Ben just won his first GAP major, the 34th edition of the GAP Mid Amateur Championship at Overbrook. In tough, wet conditions, Ben shot 69-67 to beat 2017 GAP Player of the Year Jeff Osberg by 2 shots, along with first round leader Stephen Dressel and home course favorite Chris Lange, Jr. The MidAm win should really boost Feld’s confidence as the Huntingdon Valley CC star will head to Israel this July to represent the US at the 20th Maccabi Games, the world’s largest gathering of athletes other than the Olympics. It’s a tremendous experience, I know, having played in the 11th and 12th Games. Ben will be joined on the US team by fellow HVCC golfer Ben Smith. Ben will also have a busy schedule before and after the games, playing in the GAP Am, Patterson Cup, plus the US Amateur and Mid Amateur. Remember the name, Ben Feld.
The Teams to Beat No real surprises in the BMW GAP Men’s Team Matches and Women’s Philadelphia Cup Matches this year. Philadelphia Cricket Club regained bragging rights as best men’s team with a solid win over 32-time winner HVCC, 2016 champ Little Mill and newcomer Glenmaura, final playoff score being 78 ½ points to 61, to 49, to 27. Cricket was led by Ryan Gelrod, Michael Carr, Brendan Borst and Michael Walizer. In the Philadelphia Cup, Merion’s ladies team beat the Cricket ladies 4-3, winning the Cup for a record 69th time. Merion was led by veterans Nancy Porter, Liz Haines, Vinny West, Lorraine Jones, Kim Simmons and rising stars Catherine Elliot and Christie Tallent. 28

HOLE-IN-ONE REPORT Holes in One are nice but it’s even more unique when someone makes an “albatross” a double-eagle on a par 5. So big congrats go out to Eric Lightman, who holed a 4-iron from 225 yards on the 4th hole at Bluestone CC. Never done that myself, I’m green with envy. Now for the more mundane aces in recent weeks.
