hether you think we’ve had good weather or bad, you’ve got to admit that golf courses have stayed green all year, no burn out or hard rock conditions, you’ve been able to fire at the pins. Gotta like that. Hope the fall/winter is as good, hopefully like last year, we’ll be playing straight through to spring. Once again, this issue combines our regular GREAT GOLF – New Jersey/New York edition with our GREAT GOLF – Delaware Valley edition...back by popular demand in response to your input. Double the information on courses all over the mid-Atlantic. You’ll also get an inside peek at one of the world’s most prestigious golf tournaments, the Crump Cup at Pine Valley GC, as Mike Rose’s THE ROSE FACTOR editorial chronicles 26 years of Crump memories. There’s also LOCAL NEWS, Holes-in-One and much more. In our first issue this year, we featured a beautiful golf community, Bella Collina, located just north of Orlando, Florida. Bella Collina’s Tuscan inspired community is very unique and must be on your list when looking to relocate to Florida. The telephone number in our feature was incorrect and should have been listed as 407-469-4980. Check them out at www.BellaCollina.com. Our cover feature showcases LuLu Country Club, a Donald Ross gem over 100 years old. LuLu is a great comeback story, reemerging thanks to new management, with the course in great condition and a new clubhouse almost complete. Be a member or a member for a day, either way, you’ll like it a lot. Stop slow play and may your lies be good ones!
See you on the tour!

’m not telling anyone anything new when I tell you that it’s been a tough go for both public and private golf clubs in recent years. In the case of LuLu Country Club, things got even worse when their clubhouse burned down 18 months ago. A brand new state of the art clubhouse is now under construction. It will feature a fully stocked pro shop as well as spacious men’s and women’s locker rooms. There will be a fitness center, bag and cart storage areas, as well as a new bar and restaurant, complete with golf simulators for year round use. The course is a Donald Ross gem, built over 100 years ago. The management has made a sizable investment in the irrigation system as well as new equipment for the golf course and under the leadership of superintendent Matthew Stout, the course is in the best condition it has seen in years. 2017 ISSUE 3

CRUMP CUP MEMORIES
By Mike Rose
26 Special Years at Pine Valley
’ll never forget the day that a very special letter arrived at my house. It was a hot summer day in July 1991. The top left of the front of the envelope read “Pine Valley Golf Club”. Could it be, no it couldn’t, yes it was, an invitation to play at Pine Valley’s Crump Cup, the most coveted amateur event in the country, make it the world, at the #1 ranked course in the world. Wow!! Back in the late ‘70’s, early ‘80’s, when I was playing some of my best golf, having won several big events, GAP’s prestigious Silver Cross, and been a member almost every year of GAP’s Compher Cup and Mason-Dixon teams, I thought my play might have drawn consideration for Crump Cup selection. But that never happened. So it came as somewhat of a surprise when that letter can in 1991, but the wait was certainly worth it. Many of you know of Pine Valley. #1 ranked by most of golf’s publications almost every year the last 50 years. And for good reason - an incredible piece of property, 800+ acres, craftily designed by George Arthur Crump, over hills, thru valleys, beautiful trees, lots and lots of sand, and with tees, fairways and greens in immaculate condition. I’m thrilled each time a drive into the place. You drive just past the Clementon Amusement Park, turn down Anderson Rd, past some non-descript housing to the left, with railroad tracks on the right. You go thru a parking lot, and across the tracks into the borough of Pine Valley. They have their own police force and mayor. You drive up to a small gate house, and if your name is on the list, you’re checked in. You then drive about 100 yards to a stop sign, and every time I look left and right, it’s an awesome view. To the left, you look up toward the 18th tee, spectacular. To the right, a wall of deep bunkers protecting the 18th, it gets me every time. It’s hard to believe, but the place has gotten better every year. Primarily known for its course, Pine Valley has become so much more over the years, thanks to visionary club presidents Ernie Ransome, Mel Dickenson, O. Gordon Brewer, Jr. and current czar Jim Davis. It hasn’t hurt that they have a great Pro/GM in Charley Raudenbush, current Head Pro David Clark, long time course superintendent Rick Christian and an incredible staff, from retired caddie master Lenny Ward, office manager Al Maguire, John and Mike out front, chief bartender Sly, and so many others too numerous to mention (apologies to all). The food is now second to none, as are the accommodations, with the recent additions of beautiful villas and the Centennial House. Plans for more additions and amenities are in the works. 16

The Crump Cup itself is 5 great days. Practice round on Wednesday, 2 days of qualifying on Thurs-Friday, both Mid Am and Senior divisions. 3 flights of 16 for Mid Ams, 3 flights of 8 for the seniors. If you don’t make a flight, no fear, there’s the weekend event on Pine Valley’s 10 hole short course, designed by Tom Fazio to mimic the par 3’s and 2nd shots on several par 4’s on the big course. Match play for qualifiers on Sat-Sun, medal play on the short course on Sat, 4 low scorers play match play on Sunday. All those left can still play in Sunday’s Alternate Shot partners event. There’s plenty of food throughout. A barbeque on Thursday night at the Centennial House, Friday’s cocktails and banquet at the main clubhouse, coat and tie please. An Italian dinner on Saturday, and after all play is completed on Sunday, more cocktails and plenty of appetizers. It’s easily 5 pounds to the waistline Crump week. Did I forget to mention that the entry fee is - $0. Memories include the many players and gentlemen that I have had the privilege of meeting over the years. USGA champions, winner of R & A events from Europe, Walker Cuppers from both sides of the Atlantic. I played with Rory McIlroy’s childhood buddy, the captain of the British Open at Liverpool, British Am and 5-time Bermuda Am champ Dr. Robert Vallis and Argentine am champ Andres Palandrejos, and the list of American legends is too long to list. Not to mention the characters who made the Friday dinners more fun, with the annual telling of risqué stories. Special Kudos to Kelly Miller, Mason Rudolph Jr., Harcourt Kemp, downing Gray, and the master of them all, Davis Sezna. Some final memories of my play at the Crump over the years. In my first year in ’91. I shot 152 in the qualifying and was in a playoff for the championship flight, 7 players for 2 spots. I made a solid par on the very difficult 1st hole, maybe the toughest starting hole anywhere, so did 4 others. As darkness set in, I had 155 left for my 2nd shot on #2. I was a little nervous and the adrenilin was flowing, too much unfortunately, as I blew it over the green, a big no-no, just dead. It would be the second flight for me, which, by the way, included 2 Am champs and 4 Walker Cuppers. In 1993, I was witness to Jay Sigel’s last match as an amateur, as he was about to turn pro at age 50, joining the senior tour. Jay won the Crump that Sunday, beating Joel Kaye (the answer of the trivia question, who was Jay’s last amateur victim. I made the championship twice, the last was most memorable, as at age 54 in 2001, I edged out 2-time US Mid Am champ Spider Miller for the last spot. Luckily for me, the next year, Pine Valley lengthened tees on 7 holes, that wouldn’t have helped me at all. Bring on the senior tees. Over the last few years, loss of some distance and putting woes have made me miss the cut. I did set some kind of record in 2014, with the biggest improvement in score, shooting 93-73. Last year, I was a mess, shooting 85-93, with a 8-7-6 finish, embarrassing. It was time to call it a Crump Cup career, 26 straight years of Crump invites, which, BTW, I always replied to in the affirmative the next day. Great memories. But I’ll be back at Pine Valley this year, on Crump Sunday, when Pine Valley graciously invites all to attend the Crump finals, watch the great players, walk the course, see why Pine Valley is #1. I hope to see you there. It will be memorable for you too. 2017 ISSUE 3

PUBLISHER’S PICKS Products We Know You’ll Like! (Or We Won’t Write About Them)
STICk IT MONUMENT GOlF
How often have you used an item and felt there was a better way the item could perform with a just a minor change? Or, do you use an item and wish the company (or any company) made an accessory that would make the item easier or more convenient to use? Stick It is a very clever range finder accessory that, I am sure, evolved from the frustration that there had to be a more convenient way to grab for your rangefinder quickly instead of always reaching for it in the cart cubby hole or beverage holder where it is typically stored. Need I wonder how many golfers have lost their rangefinder because they kept it in the cart’s cubby hole and forgot to take it out at the end of the round? Stick It is a rangefinder “jacket” that wraps around the range finder and magnetically clings to the frame of your golf cart. The magnets are industrial strength so your rangefinder will not budge on the cart’s frame as you drive your golf cart over the rockiest terrains. Placing Stick It onto your rangefinder is extremely simple. All you need to do is to hold Stick It with its strap folding upward, insert your rangefinder, and tighten the velcro strap. Done! I own two rangefinders: one with slope and one without slope. It fit my Callaway Nikon perfectly. My Precision
20
By Jamie Gacos
Pro NX7 Pro rangefinder is marketed as being small so it fits into the palm of your hand, making it one of, if not the smallest rangefinder on the market. Although Stick It fit around the Precision Pro NX7, it slightly covered the button used to activate the rangefinder but not to the extent that you can’t use the rangefinder. It the Stick It strap was a tad narrower, it would fit perfectly but I would not expect Monument Golf, the company that makes Stick It, to produce a Stick It with a narrower strap just to accommodate one rangefinder manufacturer. Perhaps if the trend becomes where more rangefinder manufacturers begin to make smaller rangefinders, there we will see a smaller Stick It since they do make a larger Stick It for the “over sized” rangefinders which include the Bushnell Pinseeker 1500, PRO 1600, Elite 1500, PRO 7X and Medalist. Stick It is available at many of the big box golf stores as well as at your local pro shop. It can also be purchased on their web site, monumentgolfer.com. It retails beginning at $29.95 and comes in a variety of colors and styles. It can also be customized with your golf course or organization’s logo as a player gift at your golf outing. You can contact Monument Golf via their website for more information.

NX7 PRO PRECISION PRO
First let me begin by saying that, aside from the Callaway Nikon range finder I have owned for many years, this is the first range finder that I have tested, so I have nothing to compare it to except to the one I currently own and use. The rangefinder that I road tested was the Precision Pro NX7 Pro. The NX7 Pro is a laser rangefinder with Adaptive Slope Technology which factors in the slope and elevation of your shot to display the actual yardage and the “plays as” yardage. I will admit that this is a pretty cool feature although better golfers will account for higher or lower elevations when deciding which club to hit. The NX7 Pro has the ability to switch between slope mode and non-slope mode with the click of a button since slope mode is not legal for tournament play. Since I basically had nothing to compare the NX7 Pro and wanted to know what features it had for me to look out for, I asked the company’s marketing coordinator what makes their rangefinder standout among other rangefinders on the market. First he stated, “The NX7 Pro locks onto the target (whether a flag, tree, or bunker) within 1-second at a simple click.” To me, 1-second is pretty fast. However, I found that quickness to be a little exaggerated since it did take more than 1-second to lock onto my target although I did not officially time it. I will say that it did not take a long time to where I thought it was too slow when locking onto a target. A nice feature is the unit vibrates confirming it’s locked onto 2017 ISSUE 3
the target. Precision Pro claims it is accurate to within 1 yard providing you with measurement distances to the 1/10th of a yard. “The design doesn't just look nice, it also can withstand casual golf accidents like it falling out of the cart due to its shock-proof design.” Good to know it is durable in case in flies out of the cart in the parking lot (sarcasm). Seriously, it’s good to know the unit is not tempermental when it comes to being knocked around. It is also water resistant so there’s no worry when using it on rainy days. One of its unique features is that it may be the smallest rangefinder on the market. It literally fits into the palm of your hand as well as your back pocket. Just remember it’s there when you jump back into the cart. He went on to point out that the Precision Pro NX7 Pro has “6x magnification married with our customer service, rebates and lifetime free battery replacement” which tells me that Precision Pro stands behind their product and provides a hassle free experience in the event the customer has a problem. Their model, NX7, has all of the features I just mentioned, except for the Adaptive Slope Technology, at a $199 price point. The NX7 Pro is priced at $249. As far as I am concerned, all rangefinders basically do the same. What’s important is how well and quickly it locks onto a target and provides you with an accurate reading. The Precision Pro NX7 and NX7 Pro both accomplish this at competitive price points. I would definately check it out when in the market for a rangefinder. It can be ordered on line at precisionprogolf.com.

iddletown Country Club enters its second century in historic Langhorne, Bucks County. Managed by the Agro Golf Corporation, this classic Alex Findlay design has links to the game’s historic past. Golfers can now walk the same fairways that were graced by famous names such as Hogan, Player, Miller, and Fazio. Reported by Mike Rose
Update on golf course sales - CONCERT GOLF, which took over Philmont and White Manor, is busy with total bunker redo at Philmont, plans for new North Course 18th hole and tree removal. Club Corp which took over North Hills, and is now managing French Creek GC, was itself taken over by Apollo Global, a private equity group, whose senior partner is 76ers owner Josh Harris. Interesting. And The Union League, which took over Torredale-Frankford, is said to be taking over Sand Barrens down the shore. Who will be next ?
HOLE-IN-ONE REPORT
Happy to report lots of aces from all over the region, up and down the middle Atlantic. Donna Dalusio had a pair of aces and 83 year old Ralph Lapp holed one out from 89 yards with putter!! Even yours truly got lucky, garnering my 9th ace, now going for double figures. Hope I can include you in the next issue.
