4 Music Promotion Tips
4 Music Promotion Tips
1) Gather quotes from any and everyone you can to add to your press-kit. These can be used in your bio, and on your website. Ask your producers, quote any industry personnel that may like your stuff, and incorporate these right into your social proof element. Weave the appropriate ones right into your bio as it relates to the story you are telling them.
2) You are always dealing with PEOPLE. Anyone on the other side of the industry, whether they’re journalists, publicists, producers, or fans… Focus on the value and interest from the other persons perspective. Again, the music business is not a machine. It’s pretty much the exact opposite. It’s always about people and relationships, try to make the people you interact with lives easier, and help them do their job easier. Keep in mind that they may have 1,000?s of CD’s stacked up in their office, they are probably tired and almost certainly overloaded and underpaid.
3) Brand Identity Statement: Create your brand identity statement, or a one or two sentence description of your music and style put into very precise and authentic words.
4) How can you make your CD newsworthy? Let’s put ourselves in the mind of local journalist who regularly reviews local music and independent artists… He’s probably approached every single day by some excited band/artist/rapper that pitches the

same kind of line, “were the next big thing,” check us out… Bla bla bla…
After 100?s or thousands of these interactions, you’ve gotta be at least a little bit tired… See from his perspective, it’s likely all about him discovering some amazing new band that has not only an interesting unique sound, but that also REPRESENTS something. Their STORY and how that’s reflected in their music, how those unique experiences shape the songs and the expressiveness in their tonality… Etc. THAT’s likely something that is going to catch the eye and spark the interest of your journalist. It doesn’t have to some amazing life story either… Maybe you are donating all the proceeds of your next show or concert to a local charity you feel strongly about. Ya know, just STAND OUT. You are an ARTIST. You can be creative and come up with something. Don’t EVER be inauthentic, don’t go and make anything up… But IF you spend a FEW MINUTES just thinking about some ideas along these lines, i have NO DOUBT you can come up with something, and that no doubt is more than 95% of the other bands who are trying to get some local press attention will be doing.
