Pugh Farms Bull Sale 2025

Page 1

Welcome,

The fall of 2024 will be one we will remember for years to come. Our industry has entered an era of value that is very encouraging to the producer. It is great to see and experience with our customers the success of their dedication to their operations long term goals.

We believe that this industry is very much so a people business with cattle being one of the vehicles that keeps us all interconnected and striving to look after the land and provide nutritious protein to feed the masses. We are grateful to be a fourth-generation operation that gets to align our program with so many operations that share our passion of creating cattle that are adaptable in many different environments and profitable in each faucet of the supply chain.

The bulls are an intriguing set. The spring born coming twos are the kind that will cover groups of females in big country. They have been developed in a way that aims to promote their longevity as we recognize that you are investing in a bull that will help shape the future of your cowherd. We have continued to test genotype while selecting for phenotype as we believe that it is our responsibility to create genetics that have attributes that lend to profitability. Structure, efficiency, everything maternal coupled with ease of calving and dry matter conversion that adds to production at weaning are a genetic recipe that doesn’t go out of style, and we are breeding these genetics to continue to offer these traits with accuracy. The winter born yearlings have genetic diversity on the top side of their pedigrees. We have selectively utilized a few bulls from outside of our herd bull battery to see what these individuals can offer to our genetic progress. The maternal side of these bulls is raised and developed here the same as their counterparts born in the spring. We will offer our first set of white bulls. Though the group isn’t large they are born from donors that we value quite highly in the breed.

Thanks, is something that we believe can’t be said enough. Your belief in our program and your friendship are things that drive us forward in offering these genetics each year. We are always pleased to hear from a customer, and we aim to assist you in anyway we can throughout the year. Hearing the excitement in the voices of many folks after they sold their calves is something that is very rewarding when you are creating seedstock genetics. Our neighbors, friends, family, our help around here, and the great staff at Dryland, as well as our sale day staff of Kirk, Justin, and Justin are vital to us in accomplishing our tasks throughout the year. Thank you for the fun and insight that you all share with us.

We have both Mo Angus and Misty Ridge Ranch consigning their top end replacement heifers again this year. Young families that have a passion for agriculture and raising stock that will excel for their new owners. We will also have a select group of home raised commercial females on offer that are the kind that we love to breed ourselves. Be sure to check the listings in the catalog as we have attached a few pictures to give reference to the high quality that is these operations.

Join us in Veteran or online on DLMS for a day of analyzing genetics, visiting, and a sale of seedstock that we are thrilled to offer! As always contact us anytime and if it works into your schedule to tour through the bulls before they leave for Veteran join us for a coffee and a visit anytime.

HERD HEALTH:

All bulls were vaccinated at birth with Bovilis Nasalgen 3-PMH intranasal and given LVSM8 oral mineral supplement. The bulls were given Safe-Guard crumbles in early fall and poured with Ivermectin and then poured with Clean Up mid winter.

We have added Angus HD testing to further evaluate our bulls in the offering. Genomic technology has been used to make EPDs more accurate. The genomic data increases the accuracy with which we relate animals to each other, verifying pedigree information, and allowing us to apply phenotypes of related animals to non-phenotyped animals. Genotyping animals has led to more accurate EPDs for younger animals. This means that doing the Angus GS test on an animal gives you as much information as having 23 calves with birth weights recorded and as many as 12 calves tested for individual feed intake. Updated Angus GS epds will be available sale day.

OUR BULL DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHY

Each year we write a summary of thoughts on how we develop our bulls. We have a focus on calving ease coupled with longevity while still adding dimension and muscle to add pounds to these bulls’ offspring through the genetics of their sire.

We develop the bulls in a way that we feel continually tests them while still allowing the leaders in the contemporaries to rise to the top. Structure is of utmost importance, and we utilize our varying levels of topography both in pasture and in our development pens to challenge the bulls everyday. Athletes are developed slowly through constant exercise, and we believe that to create a set of athletic bulls we need to develop them in the same fashion. Feed lines and water are at the top and the bottom of a slope with their bed ground in an opposite end of their development pens. We mimic this in our bull development pastures with water sources often being on the lowest ground and the best grazing on the higher parts of elevation. Constant movement aids the bull’s development of muscle which lends to their ability to cover cows successfully in the breeding pasture.

With bull development there is also reflection on female development, and we recognize that our females need to be ran in practice much in the same as our customers cowherds so that their genetics both from genetic and epigenetic inheritance are available for the bulls to pass on to their offspring. We currently calve our cowherd in five different groups. The groups are split into like age and numbers of females. With a start date in each calving group being the same there is an abundance of calves born first cycle in different pastures. To achieve success at calving it is expected at birth that genetically calving ease is built into our females so that they can calve on their own without an abundance of supervision. Post calving, we have encouraged through selective breeding the ability to be maternal and have our females cleaning their calves quickly and to have them up and sucking very soon after birth. We want our females to be protective of their calf through instinct but also to be intelligent and easy enough to handle that we can weigh and process their calves the day they are born safely. Udder and teat structure quality are paramount to successful calving and all udder and teats are scored on the cows annually at day of calving.

We continually select herd sires that are designed to make maternal females, while keeping our calving ease goals in check but not sacrificing any growth through to weaning. As we have genomically evaluated more and more groups of cattle we are finding that their ability to convert dry matter such as grass to pounds of gain while being raised alongside cows with maternal strength has our weaning weights increasing across the contemporary groups each fall.

A cowherd is developed on the maternal strength of its top end cows pushing the bar of expectations higher each year. A female in our herd needs to have the ability to provide a significant level of longevity both in their male and female progeny. Genetics that have impact need to have the ability to propagate while continually being tested for long-term viability.

Thoughts from Our Nutritionist

The bulls at Pugh Farms are raised with quality and longevity as the foundation of their breeding program. Proper nutrition doesn’t just start at weaning but starts in the cow at conception. Each year, a well-planned nutrition program is in place from conception to sale time. The targeted supplementation of organic minerals and vitamins throughout the year optimizes health and growth in the bulls for sale every year. From weaning on, the balance to challenge bull development without risking longevity is met with high-quality forage blends and a mixture of oats and barley. This is key for developing structure and not compromising fertility and soundness in breeding bulls.

Feeding with a Total Mixed Ration ensures the consistent delivery of all nutrients, to all bulls, to ensure every mouthful of feed is the same throughout the feed-bunk.

I hope that the 2025 sale is good for both Pugh Farms and their clients, and wish success with the addition of a Pugh Farms bull to your herd!

Lot 10M and Dam

We’ve used Raml Payload 9500 in our AI program for a couple of years and have been very pleased with the results. He offers massive body volume and stoutness in a stylish package, and the result of his mating with our 10H On the Mark daughter offers a bull we’re very proud to have raised. 10M is eye appealing, with a great skull design and front shoulder, while being very muscular in his hindquarter and correct in his structure. He’s also top 20% for WW and YW, top 15% for RADG, and has a 79lb birthweight. One of our favourite parts of this bull? He’s out of

Natural calf out of the Cortana donor who we lost way too young. His extension and shoulder structure lends to his calving ease and compliments his round muscle pattern and extra length of spine.

foot. His structure indicates power and performance from the width of his chest floor moving back to his bold sprung rib cage and into his deep muscle pattern. He’ll add pounds to a calf crop come fall.

Lot 120M and Dam

A new twist from a proven cow, you only have to look back at past catalogs to see how well this guy’s dam has worked in our program as she not only has had some of our favourite bulls sell in past sales, she’s also produced a bull we retained to use in our own program. As her 8th calf, 120M fits in with past progeny by being soft and full of volume, with a touch of extra scale. He’s also quite nice through his front third, and a definite calving ease option with a 77lb bw. If you like them to come easy and grow fast while looking good doing it, this bull should fit the bill.

PUGH MOZAMBIQUE

A bull that is out of very nice uddered, productive cow mated to a bull with some strength in carcass characteristics. A unique pedigree twist that still has plenty of maternal strength and calving ease. He was one of the heaviest calves in the winter calving group at weaning time and his growth curve has been impressive.

This bull is out of an attractive, moderate female. Our Juan 181J is a herdsire we’re quite excited about and used on a large group in 2025 after his first progeny came easy and stayed true to type.

A bull that we feel warrants a look in person, 979M’s strength once again draws from a very nice cow. Another Raml Payload, he shows that extra base width and muscularity we’ve come to expect from that sire. He’s one we feel has lots of potential as he matures.

This bull is very balanced both in terms of his phenotype and his genetic merit. He’s out of a beautiful cow – big bodied, feminine and perfect uddered. He’s maturing into a round muscled, big topped bull with plenty of calving ease.

Lot 16L

A bull that has been noticed by visitors over the past year with good reason. Another descendant of a BC Authority daughter, this is a bull with extra masculinity and extra softness while still being thick. You can’t help but find this bull in the pen. He’s an easy doing type that we’re confident will sire the same. Whether you’re looking for a bull to build replacements or create calves that will be heavy in

worth a look.

right

A bull that comes from a prolific and highly tested cow family in our program. His grandam sired 14 calves, and his dam is carrying her 9th. He weaned off heavy and is in the top 5% for DMI. Smooth made, long spined option.

A bull with lots of quarter while still being very nice fronted with what we would view as a very desirable skull shape. One of those bulls that’s quite complete and hard to pick apart when you analyze him.

An attractive individual in terms of his style and presence. Smooth in his design with the rounded muscle pattern and spine length that adds pounds to a calf crop at weaning.

If longevity is a priority for your next herdsire, look no further than Ledger. Sired by our Rio 123Z, who continues to thrive in the herdbull pasture this winter at the age of 13. His dam features a high-quality, timeless udder, further enhancing his genetic potential. With Ledger, you can look to get moderate birthweights, solid growth through weaning, and the ability to produce females that will consistently perform the same year after year after year.

Lazareth is an impressive bull, characterized by a modest birthweight while demonstrating significant growth potential in the fall. His dam stands out in the pasture, consistently exhibiting strong mothering instincts. Lazareth’s balanced design and muscular profile position him as an exceptional candidate for producing replacement females that possess the structural integrity, longevity, and maternal instincts essential for any breeding program.

The BC Authority 807 daughters have been among our favorites and this bull’s dam from Mo Angus is no exception. She’s a beautiful, stout, broody cow and mated with a bull we raised out of a strong cow family here really stacked the maternal potential of this bull. He’s very clean in his lines, nice fronted with an ample amount of masculinity and sound in his design.

London is an exceptionally striking individual, readily noticeable to visitors within the bullpen. He offers outcross potential, being sired by our black red carrier sire Yellow Jacket. He brings forward the strength of his dam who exemplifies Bonsma characteristics, showcasing remarkable femininity and structural soundness. London is notable for his eye appeal, coupled with substantial depth of muscle, spring of rib, and a rich deep red color. With significant calving ease potential, he is poised to contribute effectively to the production of both high-quality replacement females and outstanding bull calves.

RED PUGH LAMBO

One of the longest made bulls in the offering. His mother is the kind that goes about her business each year raising calves that wean heavy. Lambo is smooth made and has the deep dark red color that catches your eye from across the pasture.

Lot 144L

160L is out of Apollo 45E, a bull that’s been a consistent presence in our program the last few years for producing calving ease with extra shape. 160L is a dark cherry red smooth made option that has the structure to last in large pasture situations.

166L is a bull that is really easy to look at, he’s very complete in a phenotypic sense, and one that has impressive growth performance. He’s top 3% for both ww and yw and top 10% RADG. He should sire the type of calves that feed well.

He’s out of heifer and one that we’re very excited to retain in our program after seeing what she looks like mature and what she can produce. A bull that’s an excellent calving ease option. He’s one that puts the pieces together in a stout, strong topped package.

222L embodies our program in the sense of stout calving ease prospects with lots of grow. He’s got lots of fore rib and chest floor with a nice skull shape and shoulder junction. When we think about what we believe our customer base comes to us for, we think of bulls like this one.

Lazlo is an individual that is characterized by a well-defined muscular build, exhibiting significant width across his top and an impressive length of spine. His dam is a black cow who is very nice in terms of her maternal traits. His overall masculinity is accentuated by a robust chest floor and an angular design, positioning him as an exceptional candidate for enhancing both genetic diversity and performance in a contemporary breeding program.

If you use epds in a tool in your program, here’s a bull with a balanced profile. If you prefer to focus on phenotype, here’s a bull that’s very proportionate in that aspect as well. If you happen to be intrigued by pedigrees, he’s full of cattle that have proven their

He’s heavily muscled, while still being smooth through the front third and soft in his middle. In a word – balanced.

PUGH LINCOLN

A heifer’s first calf out of the Apollo bull who has worked so well for us breeding heifers each year. His mother is an attractive individual who is capacious and wide at the ground. He brings that design forward in a very balanced look standing on a square structure and solid foot.

Length creates pounds and this bull is one of the longest made ones in the group. He has a great skull structure and a deep round muscle that adds to his dimension and quality.

Lot 247L and Sire

Lenox is an individual that has the genotype to sire high performing calves through weaning and yearling. His actual moderate birthweight makes him a dual purpose individual who can be utilized in the heifer pasture but also work great over a group of cows.

Layton is a smooth made great skulled individual that offers calving ease coupled with the ability to create replacements patterned after his gorgeous mother who works at putting a top end bull in the sale group each and every year.

Leland stands out with an impressive birth-to-weaning weight spread, making him a very well rounded herd-sire prospect. His smooth shoulder, combined with a strong chest floor and well-defined muzzle, exemplifies a calving ease bull without sacrificing the performance at weaning that adds value to a calf crop. Leland’s dam has consistently demonstrated her excellence, reliably producing high-quality sons and daughters each fall.

If you like them extra muscled – this is the one you one to look at. This bull is probably the heaviest muscled one in the group, he carries it up over his top and loin and down through his lower third. He still exhibits the nice soft middle and rib shape that the Heath 390H sire has really stamped in his offspring.

An outlier in his epd profile for being in the top 7% for DMI and top 10% for RADG. Another heavy muscled black option that has a moderate 79 lb birthweight and a pedigree that will replace nice uddered, maternal females.

Loop is an impressive individual, characterized by his strong structural soundness and square stance. He exhibits notable depth of muscle and smooth shoulder integration, contributing to his overall appealing design. With a solid foundation inherited from his dam, who exemplifies longevity in breeding, Loop is poised to enhance the genetic quality of any herd.

PUGH LEONIDAS 503L

A Yellowjacket son that’s top 1% DMI, he’s very soft middled and easy moving. He’s out of a cow that has a picture perfect udder in our judgement.

With both of Lorenzo’s sire and dam celebrating their 13th birthdays this year longevity looks to be a solid part of his genetic makeup. Muscle, depth, and length of spine add to the attributes of value that he offers in a complete package. He’s a replacement maker if you enjoy raising the kind of cattle that work day in and out and last.

A complete individual with the right amount of shape when you analyze him from behind. He is the kind that will cover groups of heifers or cows in large country while adding dimension and weight to a calf crop each year.

A bull that has been a standout from early on, this bull is beautiful fronted while being exceptionally deep middled. He’s a calving ease option with a 71 lb birthweight that doesn’t give up an ounce of weaning performance. The dam of this bull is the type we strive to produce, very feminine in her design with a beautiful udder and a good foot. Wean heavy calves and keep every female.

PUGH LEVI

This is a bull that’s nice to work with, he’s quiet but still responds well to pressure. A slightly different pedigree on the top side with a cow that goes back to Red Northline GFA Crush 16B. 65 lb birthweight that still grew well on pasture and weaned heavy.

Lot 698L and Dam

This is a bull we think really highly of. He’s exceptionally big ribbed, a testament to the females he goes back to who are truly the capacious type we all like to have in our herds. He’s got the birth to weaning spread we aim to produce and is top 30% for both CE and WW in his epd profile. He’s proud fronted and extremely eye appealing while being full of extra muscle.

PUGH LEANDER 699L

Pedigree twist, his mother was born in Kansas and exemplifies the ranch cow type. We have no doubt he will sire the kind of calves that have vigour and doability.

Lot 730L

Heath 390H is a bull that has just flat worked for us, he’s out of a cow we acquired from Craig Guffey in Kansas who was very feminine, structurally sound and maternal. This son in particular is very masculine, with that extra middle and thickness the Heath’s have brought forward. A bull that is exceptional in his overall design coupled with a balance epd profile. He’s hard not to like.

RED PUGH LUNDBRECK 708L

Lundbreck is sired by our Seneca 51G herdsire and he brings forward an abundance of quality traits from his sire. He displays a rounded muscle design with abundant dimension. His dam features a desirable pear shaped profile when viewed from behind, complemented by a smooth shoulder structure. Additionally, his modest birth weight enhances his suitability as a valuable asset in the heifer breeding pasture, ensuring ease of calving while maintaining strong genetic potential.

Lot 732L

The kind that looks good from angle, 733L is one of the last sons of Rio 123Z, a calving ease bull that has consistently worked to produce top daughters and powerful sons. 733L is big topped and deep muscled with a 71 lb birthweight. Masculine in type, he’ll mature into the kind of herdbull you keep around for as long as possible.

Moderate framed and round made are two things that come to mind when analyzing this guy. It’s easy to appreciate how soft middled he is while still being complete and smooth through his shoulder.

Lennon is an interesting individual right full of calving ease complimented with great DMI value indicating that he has the ability to work in a heifer pasture for a long time creating the type of calves that convert grass and milk into pounds while looking great doing it.

Longmire is a well-constructed, soft-made bull with a square structure and impressive depth of muscle. His exceptional head structure and wide muzzle are complemented by an ample chest floor, contributing to his efficiency in converting dry matter into weight gain. Longmire’s gentle disposition makes him a standout character within the group, while his powerful shape and design, coupled with a striking appearance, position him as a great addition to a program that keeps replacements and sells their steers off the cow in the fall.

This is a bull that’s been picked out in the pen, he’s clean and attractive in his lines, with a bit of extra length in his spine. The kind of bull that is soft in his movement, 809L is out of a Six Mile Advance 262C daughter from our Rosebud cow family, a combination that has really worked in terms of maternal strength. He’s also top 25% for CE, and fits our criteria for heifer bull options that have the muscle shape and look to work

way you want them to go.

Lot 805L

Liam is the type we really enjoy breeding. A user friendly birthweight with the weaning performance that makes him an asset to the heifer breeding side of a program. His round muscle pattern and depth of side also adds to his ability to sire heavy calves come fall.

966L is a bull exhibiting exceptional power and structural integrity, characterized by a substantial amount of centre body and pronounced depth of muscle. His muscle extends effectively from his pin bone down to the hocks, contributing to his overall performance capabilities. Additionally, 966L’s attractive movement and masculine skull signify his ability to be an excellent candidate for producing top-tier replacement females in a progressive breeding program.

We work hard to produce calving ease options that don’t sacrifice weaning performance and muscle shape to do it and this bull is no exception. 70 lb birthweight. He’s also out of herdsire we raised that’s chock full of maternal strength.
