The Challenge

from University of Notre Dame

The Spirit of Notre Dame. It’s in books, it’s in songs, and it’s mentioned in more conversations than can be counted. But, where is it captured? Where can the occasional visitor coming off the highway, or the parents of the student making college visits, capture a snapshot of the greatness of this University? One might say, the Basilica, or the Golden Dome, or Notre Dame Stadium; there is a long list of destinations that must be visited to even begin to understand the depth of the University of Notre Dame. It would be easy to add to this list such stops as the Grotto, the South Hall, or the Gug. They each have their story to tell, and each help to fill in the blanks of this question of the Spirit of Notre Dame. Some tell the story of the Catholic mission and foundation of the University, some tell of the athletic powerhouse that is the Fighting Irish, and some tell of one of the greatest academic institutions in the world. But not one place brings it all together and captures the full spirit of the place. Why are Notre Dame alumni so bonded in their collective beliefs? Why are students and alumni tied to this great place for life? Why do so many people want to be affiliated with Notre Dame even if they didn’t graduate from here?

ECK VISITORS CENTER | NOTRE DAME

It is not one structure or one story. It is the whole. And the Eck Visitor’s Center has the opportunity to be that storyteller. There is a need to find a place that can act as a funnel for all of the great experiences on campus. It can add depth and breadth to campus tours. It can be the one stop if that’s all you’ll get to experience, and it can be the launchpad if you’re there for the weekend. It can be a truly meaningful view of the mission and vision of the University of Notre Dame.

Current Google Map

Currently, when a visitor Googles for the University of Notre Dame, some place random on campus is identified as the main identity mark for the university.

ECK VISITORS CENTER | NOTRE DAME

Proposed Google Map

Logically, it would make sense for the Google identity mark for the University of Notre Dame to be recognized at the Eck Visitors Center. This idea is due to Eck being the entry gate to the campus and being the first building when a visitor drives down Notre Dame Avenue.

Signage Revamp

At Exit 77 – exiting Interstate 90 – University of Notre Dame is looking to embark on an overall signage revamp.

Auditorium

The auditorium currently has 146 seats and 4 handicap accessible seats. The proposed plan exemplifies removing the middle aisle which will leave the space with 126 seats and 4 handicap seats. Also illustrated on the page are elevations for the front-screen wall and side walls.

Side Wall Elevations – Concept 1

The inset areas on the wall would show historic imagery (printed graphics) from around the campus with a blue monotone overlay.

ECK VISITORS CENTER | NOTRE DAME

Side Wall Elevations – Concept 2

The banners at the front of the auditorium are the same in this concept. The inset areas on the wall would have a routed wood celtic pattern matching that of the existing wood featuring clovers and Notre Dame logo as the center piece for each. The back of the inset area simply painted the “ND” blue. This would cause a nice affect with the existing uplighting.

Auditorium

Shown are the other two concepts for the auditorium side walls.

Side Wall Elevations – Concept 3

The banners at the front of the auditorium are the same in this concept too. This is a play off of the 2nd concept only using iron or mdf painted to look like metal as the celtic pattern rather than stained wood.
